Katrina + Tyler’s barn wedding was a mixture of her family’s Northern tastes, his family’s Midwestern ideas and their Southern locale. Though ideas didn’t always match up, what resulted was a sweet day full of handmade details that came together under the barn at Vinewood. K + T let their vendors work their talents and were completely open to doing a first look at Ben and Colleen’s suggestion. Katrina now says the first look photos are her favorites from the big day! We love that even though the couple was surrounded by talented vendors, everyone pitched in to make everything from wedding accessories to decor to cakes!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new?
Yes! My maid of honor had special garters made for me (one to toss, one to keep). She had them made with satin (blue), vintage lace from her grandmother (borrowed), and had vintage stamps from our invitations made into charms hanging from the garter (something old turned new!). They were so special!

Three months after we met, Tyler popped the question. Hey, when you know, you know! We got engaged underneath the willows at Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia. We even had our own private drum circle to provide the romantic background music (okay, it wasn’t part of the plan, but it certainly did add some humor to our memories). We were sitting on a blanket together reading. It was a nice day, but the clouds had started to roll in. When it looked like it might rain, Tyler turned to me and said, “So do you want to head inside before it rains, or do you want to stay out here and get engaged?” My heart exploded! He proposed with the ring that his father, who passed away when Tyler was very young, gave to his mother 28 years ago. Soon after, we set our wedding date for April 5, 2013, exactly one year from the day we met.

I found my wedding dress at a charming little boutique in Atlanta’s Candler Park called Kelly’s Closet. I brought my best friend, who is one of the most honest people you’ll ever meet. I tried on about 11 dresses that day, and with each one my best friend gave an immediate head shake of disapproval until I tried on the perfect one. The second I walked out of the dressing room, my best friend’s eyes lit up. When I saw myself in the mirror, mine did the same. Even though it was a store sample and three sizes too big, I knew it was the one. I came back to the store two more times with my mother and mother-in-law before making my final decision, but I finally did it! And I couldn’t love my dress anymore. It’s still in my closet and I stare at it every day wishing I could wear it again!

Describe your wedding flowers.
Our wedding flowers were simple and rustic. My bouquet was loose and cascading, with peonies, feverfew, peach stock, and greenery. It was tied with burlap. The groomsmen had boutonnieres with yellow Billy balls, peach stock, greenery, and were tied with twine. My bridesmaids each had a unique and different bouquet, with mixes of peonies, feverfew, peach stock, and greenery. For our reception flowers, we had an eclectic mixture of flowers, with each table having a different arrangement and set up. The color scheme remained the same as the bridal party flowers: yellows, peach, white, and greenery. Some tables had white hydrangeas in blue mason jars, other tables had bud vases with peach stock, Billy balls, and baby’s breath. Everything looked incredible together!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? We did decide to do a first look. Our photographers recommended it because they would be able to get a lot of great shots together before the ceremony and all of the craziness that would follow. We also weren’t very traditional with our wedding. Tyler had already seen me in my wedding dress at one of my final fittings, so a first look sounded great to us. And the pictures are so sweet, it was one of my favorite moments during the day!

Did you write your own vows?
We did not write our own vows. I am extremely nervous in front of crowds and didn’t want to say anything except “I do!” Our officiant took care of all of the talking so I was able to remain calm and collected.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony?
We did not have any. Our officiant, who is best friends with Tyler, shared the story of how we met, how we got engaged, and how we were getting married on the anniversary of when we met. It was perfect!

I walked down the aisle to “Seventeen” by Youth Lagoon. I chose this song because it’s so beautiful, with piano and hazy vocals, and a line that makes me cry every time I hear it: “When I was seventeen, my mother said to me, ‘Don’t stop imagining, the day that you do is the day that you die.” It meant so much to have that playing to remind us just how magical life can be, and all the wonderful things we have in store together. The song started out slow and calm, but when I started walking down the aisle, the beat picked up and was just absolutely perfect. Our first dance was to “Look at Where We Are” by Hot Chip. We chose this song because of a memory we have together. When Tyler and I first started dating and I visited him where he lived a few hours away, we were driving around during the summer with our windows down, holding hands, and listening to this song. We weren’t talking, just smiling and listening as we heard, “Look at where we are, remember where we started out. Never gonna be without each other’s love again.” This meant a lot to us because when we first met, our futures were a little uncertain. Tyler had been planning on moving to California, and I had been in a long-term relationship that hadn’t completely dissolved. We knew that we were crazy about each other, but weren’t sure exactly where things were going. Once we realized that we knew exactly what we wanted, we knew we’d be with each other forever. Cheesy, but true!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding?
For one, we had our wedding at Vinewood, an outdoor venue with our reception held in renovated stables! We included a lot of Southern decor in our wedding and reception, specifically with a lot of mason jars and other vintage decorations. Having the ceremony outdoors with vintage chairs also made our wedding feel elegantly Southern.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
All of the DIY work my mother and I did definitely was my favorite part. We worked so hard for months on everything and worked as a great team. I made and designed the invitations, save the dates, menus for the reception, drink stirrers, cake toppers, rings and hairpins for my bridesmaids as gifts (which I am now working to sell on Etsy!), and so many other things! My mother made fantastic dyed coffee filter balls that hung above the dance floor, she made all of the napkins and she made every single dessert we served. She even made her own dress and the flower girl dress and accessories! We also made the signature drinks ahead of time (Apple Pie Moonshine and White Wine Sangria) and the wedding favors (homemade limoncello and herb-infused olive oil). I’m sure most people didn’t notice all of the effort we put in, but we will never forget it!

My mother made all of the desserts for our wedding. She worked for weeks getting everything together. Our wedding cake was two-tiered and was a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I made the cake topper myself out of wooden skewers, string, and washi tape! The groom’s cake, also made by my mother, was a dark chocolate Guinness cake. I made the cake toppers for the groom’s cake — individual plants creating the solar system because Tyler is a Space-Systems Engineer and loves space. Other desserts my mother made were mini tiramisus, Italian cookies, lemon cake, fig and date cake, red velvet cupcakes, and much more!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story.
We met through mutual friends. Tyler’s best friend was dating my best friend, and they had been trying to set us up for a while, but things weren’t the cards for us to meet just yet. One night in April 2012, we both just so happened to be going to Sweetwater Brewery with our friends and we finally met. The second I saw him, I couldn’t stop staring. Tylere was beyond adorable! We immediately hit it off and talked all night, ending with the sweetest hand-holding session I’ve ever had. From that moment on, he was all I could think about. It still makes me smile to think about that night!
When did y’all get married?
April 5, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding?
150
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Keeping everyone happy! My family is from the North and Tyler’s is from the Midwest, so our ideas didn’t always line up. We wanted a very untraditional wedding, while our families wanted something a bit more traditional and upscale. While some things we had to stand up and say we weren’t going to do, we did settle by having Sun in My Belly cater, a very sophisticated (and delicious) caterer, instead of a food truck with tacos!
What range did your wedding budget fall into?
$25,000-$50,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding?
Our photographers were my favorite part! They were fun, witty, and made us comfortable and relaxed, which you could definitely tell in the pictures! They captured every single detail, even some things that I was too busy running around to notice, so I got to see every part of my wedding once our photos came back!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
When my little sister Sophia, the flower girl, started walking up the aisle before me. She couldn’t see the aisle in between the two sides, so she decided to just go all the way around everyone and completely ignore the aisle! She had no idea she did anything the slightest bit wrong. It was precious, and Tyler says that he and some of the other groomsmen got tears in the eyes because it was so cute. Some of my friends now call her Sophia “I do what I want” Brosan.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding?
Take a deep breath! There were times when I was planning things and worrying about how it would all turn out and I would just sit and cry for hours. Don’t do this! It doesn’t help. Just remember that it’s just a big party for a day, and even if things don’t go completely as planned, no one will ever notice. I also recommend that everyone try to DIY as much as they can if you have the time — it gives you a lot to be proud of and memories you’ll never forget because you made it all happen!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life?
Right now we are just relaxing and enjoying being married without having to plan a wedding! There are two big things in our future that we’re looking forward to: an addition to our family (a kitten!) and searching for our first house (we are planning to move to Austin, Texas sometime next year!!). We can’t wait!

He there Patricia – I am one of the owners of Vinewood. Yes, the ‘candle’-iers are part of our inventory. If you want something like them for your wedding, we got them on http://www.save-on-crafts.com we had to remove the little spike that typically a candle would go on. Then we just hot glued a small mason jar and voila – there you have it. We wish you all the best o your wedding planning. Jamie

The divine lace details and soft pink palette definitely stuck out to me when I first laid eyes on Chanda + David’s wedding — I’m a sucker for feminine classic Southern style, and C + D’s wedding fits the bill perfectly! But, the loveliness gave way to meaning when I read about Chanda’s exquisite veil — it was her late mother’s, and, to quote the bride, wearing it was “a feeling I just can’t describe.” Now I can’t help but get a little choked up every time I look at Lexia Frank’s portraits of Chanda. Isn’t she radiant?

From day one I envisioned a strapless lace gown, simple and elegant without any extra this or that. I found it at the second shop we visited, Brides by Demetrios. Even though it was exactly what I envisioned, after trying it on I still wasn’t sure. I kept waiting for that feeling that everyone kept telling me about. I went on to the next shop and again, was still waiting for that feeling.

Finally, I decided that I would make a trip to visit my grandmother and pick up my late mother’s veil. I returned to Brides by Demetrios to try on the dress again with my mother’s veil and that is the moment I knew that it was the one.

I adore the photo of Chanda’s grandmother looking on over the hustle and bustle of the gals getting ready! Chanda said the day was also not complete without a retelling by her grandmother of a favorite story — the Christmas Chanda received her first string of pearls, and her grandmother remarked that now, as a Southern girl, she could work on her sterling silver!

Absolutely stunning, y’all! Pass those tissues!

I had my heart set on pink and white peonies for my bouquet and the bridesmaids’ bouquets. I was so disappointed when Alta, our florist, told us peonies weren’t in season in February. She suggested ranunculus, garden roses and spray roses, and they turned out to be romantic and absolutely beautiful wrapped in burlap and lace!

When we visited Cross Creek Ranch, I fell in love with the idea of getting married under the Oak tree simply for the symbolism. I can only hope that the love David and I share will last a lifetime through strength and courage.

What a stunning spot for a wedding ceremony!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Neither of us wanted to do a first look. We both were looking forward to that moment we saw each other as I walked down the aisle.
Did you write your own vows?
We had every intention of exchanging our own vows, but after I saw how nervous David was at our rehearsal, I thought the traditional vows would be a little less nerve-wracking. Our pastor’s vows were traditional but modern and perfect. We wrote down our own vows in a letter and exchanged them before the ceremony. It was very special to us.

What was Southern about your wedding? We were married on a ranch! I don’t think you can get more Southern than that! Our reception was held in the rustic old barn, and everything was wrapped in burlap and lace. We used mason jars for decoration, and our Southern lemonade was spiked with Jack Daniels. Chicken and waffles were passed during our cocktail hour. Guests made s’mores by the bonfire and played horseshoes. I also gave personalized handkerchiefs as gifts to my grandmother, my mother in-law and father in-law right before the ceremony.

I love the bows sprinkled throughout Chanda + David’s celebration!

We chose pink and white arrangements of garden roses, rananculus and white hydrangeas for the centerpieces. Silk white hydrangeas hung in mason jars wrapped with burlap and lace on our ceremony chairs. A wine barrel filled with silk white hydrangeas sat beautifully, greeting guests as they entered the barn for the reception. The silk flowers were more beautiful than I had imagined.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Our venue, Cross Creek Ranch was there for us every step of the way. They provided the designer, the vendors and the coordinator. I don’t think they could have made it any easier! I did take on a few DIY projects. I wrapped our invitations with burlap and lace, and stuffed them into envelopes I assembled from lace doilies. I also printed our escort cards and tied each and every one to our plantable skeleton keys. The biggest challenge to overcome while completing these projects was a very active toddler. Thanks to David, I was able to complete them. I also cannot forget tying raffia to all our mason jars and printing and assembling drink flags the day before the wedding (with a big help from my mother in-law and father in-law)!

We had a gorgeous three-tier buttercream ruffle cake accented with gum paste roses. It was vanilla and chocolate, our favorites. It was the best cake I’ve ever eaten!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.
David and I met through mutual friends at a concert. I heard Ben Harper for the first time while driving home from the beach with my girlfriend. Several weeks later, I saw Ben Harper was coming to town. I immediately contacted my girlfriend Faye and told her we should get tickets to the concert. David was not a fan of the artist, but was tagging along with his friend Paul. To this day, David swears we had a moment during the concert when our eyes met. It breaks my heart to admit, but he had the better viewing spot, and I kept looking over to him thinking that if he were a gentleman, he would offer me his spot. Which he did. After the concert, I wanted nothing more than to go home and go to bed, but Dave and my girlfriend were going to have a couple of drinks at the local brewery. As I turned to go home, I thought maybe I should stick around. After all, I thought Dave was hysterically funny, charming and devilishly handsome. Truth be told, I didn’t want my girlfriend to see what I had seen. The night came to an end and we parted ways. Several days later, we ran into each other again amongst friends. It was Cinco De Mayo. After several minutes of casual conversation, out of nowhere Dave asked me out on a date. In complete shock, my immediate response was NO! As he walked away defeated, I knew that was the last time I ever wanted him to walk out of my life. I spent the next several weeks chasing him, and with help from our mutual friends Cristi and Darren, I finally got a second chance for a first date. Very early on in our relationship, I knew he was the one and I told my dearest friend Robyn, “You know when you know, and I know.”
Describe the proposal.
I can remember several weeks leading up to the proposal, David kept asking me to go on a trip. Every other night he would try and sell me on a destination. It was hot and we were expecting a beautiful baby boy in the upcoming months — he couldn’t get me to go anywhere. On a Monday, David told me to come straight home from work because he was making us dinner. As I walked in our living room, it was filled with roses and balloons. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Then we danced. It was perfect. I then asked him if my grandma knew, and unbeknownst to me, he had visited her days before to ask for my hand in marriage. Later that evening we celebrated at our one of our favorite restaurants.
In what month did you get married?
 February
How many guests attended your wedding?
 100
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. We spent a lot of time picking the perfect music. We wanted it to represent who we are. The groom and groomsmen walked in to the instrumental version of “Hallelujah,” one of Dave’s favorites. I walked down the aisle to the instrumental version of “Thank You” by Led Zeppelin, one of my favorite bands of all time. We walked back up the aisle to Al Green’s, “Love and Happiness.” David played it the night he proposed. We danced to Ray LaMontagne’s song, “You Are The Best Thing.” It reminded me of when we first met and we would listen to him and dance in the kitchen. Our last dance was Van Morrison’s, “Crazy Love.” It is a great love song, selected by the groom. We exited to Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire.” Who doesn’t love Johnny Cash?
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: There are so many to choose from! First, the venue. The veil was another favorite. I wore my late mother’s antique lace, cathedral length wedding veil. It’s a feeling I just can’t describe. I also wore an estate piece of jewelry over 150 years old from my late great grandfather’s jewelry store. Our food was another great detail. David is from the Philadelphia area, so during cocktail hour mini cheesesteaks were passed. We also loved our favors. We purchased plantable skeleton keys to attach to our escort cards from Recycled Ideas on Etsy. I hope that as the flowers bloom, people are reminded that love will continue to blossom over time.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? I would have to say the photographer, Lexia Frank — she is just amazing and incredibly talented. Everything she captures is beautiful. We also splurged on the videographer. The day goes by so fast — it is very surreal. I am so happy we decided (literally the week before) to have it documented. I am looking forward to having the video to watch for years to come. Lastly, we splurged on the food. Our caterer Puff n’ Stuff did a phenomenal job.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The groom and I agree that the most memorable moment was when I walked down the aisle and our eyes met. It’s a feeling I will not soon forget. Our ceremony was beautiful.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding?
If you can budget for one, hire a wedding designer/coordinator. It’s worth every dime! Throughout the day, take a moment to take it all in, because it goes by so fast! Don’t forget to excuse yourselves from guests and go dance with your groom!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Traveling with our little family, including our two dogs, in an RV throughout the United States.

Natalie + Shobie’s wedding is a wonderful example of bringing the South to wherever you are. Though their wedding took place in Colorado, Shobie is a tried and true Southern gent and their wedding boasted details from home like cowboy boots, antiques, lace and mason jars — all appropriate additions since it was Shobie’s Southern drawl that won Natalie over when they first met! Y’all know I can’t let my favorite string lights go unmentioned. N + S made it their own by hanging adorable tin cans with heart shapes punched through them. It was the perfect way to light up the gorgeous barn they said “I do” in front of and celebrated in.

The Southern Weddings Gals are sending big hugs to Cassidy Brooke for sharing this wedding with us!

Describe your wedding flowers: Simple. I loved all the flowers because it they were so personal. My mother arranged all of them. As a little girl she worked in her father’s flower shop for years and since he passed away last year, it was an honor to have my mother create these beauties in his honor.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: My friends kept telling me that I would find my dress at the first shop that I went to. I didn’t believe them. After trying on so many dresses, we were literally walking out the door when I saw it in the window. I walked back to the counter and asked if I could try just one more on. When I put that dress on, I knew it was the one!

We did a first look because we wanted to be able to be in awe of each other and tell each other how great we looked. We also wanted to pray and have a moment before God before we set out on this new adventure. It was also really convenient with pictures!

Did you write your own vows? We did our vows in a unique way. We wanted to respect the tradition of vows and we wanted to make our own, so we did both! My favorite thing about writing our vows was that it was so personal. We have this saying, “I promise, promise.” We know that a lot of people say that they promise but then never follow through, so we know when we really mean it we say it twice just for good measure.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There are too many to count! I do remember that, while we were taking photos, Cassidy would stop me and tell me to just sit in the moment and soak it all in. I really appreciated that she helped not only to capture the great pictures, but great moments!

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Procrastination
What range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? My dress, photography and food!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Pace yourself and get a DJ.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Amazing!! My sister is a chef and she made our cake! It was raspberry with cream cheese frosting. We also had chocolate and vanilla cupcakes for everyone.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We meet at a progressive dinner party through friends. I was washing the dishes and Shobie came up and asked, “Can I dry your dishes” with that sweet country mouth. I was hooked.
Describe the proposal. It was so amazing and it became even more amazing after he popped the question! It was actually on our one-year anniversary. Shobie picked me up with white roses from my house and then we headed to our favorite Italian restaurant, Paravicini’s in Old Colorado City. I had no clue that it was coming! We had an amazing time eating great food and reminiscing on the past year and how crazy it was. Just after we ordered dessert, he said “I really love you.” I replied with “and I love you,” thinking nothing of it (because he reminds me so often). Then he started to slide toward the edge of the booth. I thought, “Oh, he is heading to the bathroom after a comment like that? Weird.” Then he proceeded to say, “So I talked to your dad a while ago and I was wondering if you would be my wife?” Of course I said yes!! When I started crying he told me to stop! All of our friends were waiting outside to greet us and take pictures with us! After, we celebrated with our friends we headed to my parents’ house and told the whole family. There was just one more thing he planned to top the night off. We drove far out into the Colorado Mountains at a secret place we love to watch the stars from. As we were setting up all the blankets in the back of the truck, he told me to come and sit on the edge of the truck. Then, asked me to take my shoes off. He proceeded to pour warm water from a thermos in to a big pot and washed my feet and told me that he wanted to love me like Jesus. We read scripture, prayed and started dreaming about our life to come!
In what month did you get married? September
How many guests attended your wedding? 200 people
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We got married in front of a barn! My husband always wears boots, so the whole bridal party wore boots that day. There were also a lot of antiques everywhere.
