Long before I joined the Southern Weddings team, I loved following the Southern Newlywed features on the blog. While the photos each week are beautiful, the newlywed interviews are unlike any I’ve seen elsewhere on the web, because it captures the story behind the images. The combination of Christine’s background in design with both their hearts for hospitality is evident in both the images and interview below, and I hope you find inspiration for both your home and marriages below!

Big thanks to Britt Latz Photography for these lovely images!

The Couple: Christine (32) and Drew (32)
Years Married: Three
Children: Ellie Kate, 12 months
Where They Live: Historic Fairmount in Fort Worth, TX

Tell us a little bit about yourselves. We have been married three years, and our life is a constant adventure. One minute we are planning a couples’ obscure competition party with friends and the next one of us has locked our keys in the car. Something just always seems to be going on. Drew works with high school and middle school students at Watermark Community Church, and I am the owner and lead designer of an interior design firm, Christine Zeiler Interiors, while also trying to spend as much time as possible at home with (our daughter) Ellie Kate. We love to try new restaurants, take our German shorthaired pointer to the park, and have family dance parties.
Tell us your love story in one sentence. After many failed attempts to be set up on a date by a mutual friend, Drew predicted we would get married after our first date; one year later we were married.

What is your favorite part of being married? We get to see each other at our very best and our very worst but in spite of our imperfections, we are radically committed to each other. That’s been remarkable.
What has been the most surprising thing about marriage? Although we only knew each other for one year before getting married, there have not been a lot of surprises when it comes to knowing the other person. We talked a lot during engagement about our lives, expectations, and experiences, so we knew fairly well what we were getting ourselves into ;)

Where do you splurge and where do you save when decorating? What are some of your favorite sources for home things? We splurged on a very beautiful vintage rug from NYC for our living room. We have been fortunate to be able to trade services like photography for our bigger upholstery pieces like our sofa and bed and other custom built pieces like our dining table and coffee table. Additionally, window treatments were gifted from the workroom in Nashville I worked with. A lot of smaller things such as lamps, side tables and dressers we have purchased from IKEA and upgraded by performing IKEA “hacks” or gotten from Target. Other pieces of furniture have been acquired at flea markets or are family heirlooms.

Do you rent or own? We own. We love our home. We moved to Fort Worth and were determined to find our house in two days, which was the window of time we had to visit before we would move one month later. Miraculously, we found what was relatively the home of our dreams by searching cool coffee shops in town and looking for houses in those neighborhoods. In the last 2.5 years the housing market in our area has exploded. We would love to either add on to our house or find a larger house in our neighborhood that we can renovate so we can raise our family here and host friends, family, and the students and families we serve.
Which room in your home is your favorite, and why? Does our front porch count? We love our porch! Also, to our surprise, we have really loved our daughter’s nursery. Before she was born we rarely went in that room but now It’s a place we often gather and hang out. It is the only room in our house we bought all new furniture for and got to make a complete design plan for. The room has great natural light and the daybed is super cozy. The wall sconces above it are the perfect lighting for reading stories at night too.

Our house feels most like home because our furniture pieces that have stories behind them and personal photos throughout our house. We try to decorate with items that can also be used or have meaning behind them and not just stuff we quickly find to fill up empty spaces. A lot of our lives are lived in our home and we are amassing a lot of life together in our home. It is our home because of game nights we have had, the family dinners we have hosted, the ministry we have done with our friends, and the children we are raising here.

Who cooks dinner? I cook, and Drew cleans up afterwards. Drew has occasionally cooked his go-to spaghetti or what he thinks is his award-winning chili, but in reality he got the recipe from me.
What is your go-to weeknight meal? Weekend meal? The Crunchy Kale Bowl from Joy the Baker is a staple and amazing. We add Trader Joe’s chicken sausage to it to add some meat. A regular weekend meal would be eating out at Torchies Tacos.
What’s your favorite place to find recipes? Joy the Baker and The Defined Dish are some of my favorite online places for new recipes. I also like asking my friends for their favorite go-to recipes. That’s actually how I have found all of my favorite recipes! They are rarely a flop.

How does your family handle finances? We go back and forth with who manages the budget, and right now Drew is taking one for the team and updating it. We use every dollar which is great but pretty time-consuming. However, it works really well for us because we know where literally every dollar is going. :) There’s also a great feature where you can create funds for budgets that you may not make purchases for every month or occasionally overspend on monthly but it keeps track of what you have left for the year, which we really love.
What’s your best tip for balancing your relationship and other life priorities? We find that life priorities are like other things in life. When you put the biggest things in first and the then the next biggest thing in second and so forth, the rest sort of takes care itself. Matthew 6:33 states an important principle for our lives and our marriage: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these other things we be added unto you.” Practically, we try to go on a weekly date night. Drew gets off on Friday so we try to spend the day together as a family either Friday or Saturday. It is also very important to us to stay connected to our friends. We try to allow our marriage and our lives to be an open book so that the people who know us best can speak truth to us when we start to live selfishly and center our lives on ourselves rather than the other person.

We like to try and come up with creative date nights. One idea we really liked was we had to imagine that our first date was in Fort Worth. (It was actually in Nashville.) If our first date was in Fort Worth, where would we take the other person, what would we do, and what sort of questions would we ask each other? We thought for sure that conversation would seem redundant because we are married, but we were surprised how fun conversation was talking to each other like we were just meeting.

Which items from your wedding registry do you use the most often? Our Nespresso coffee machine, white plates and dishes from Williams Sonoma and our Vitamix.
What different decisions, if any, would you make for your registry if you knew then what you knew now? We got married in our late 20’s so we kind of knew what we wanted. And our friends and family were very generous so I don’t think we would change anything.

What is one small way you love or serve your spouse? Every Sunday we sit down with our weekly schedules and talk through the week- it really helps us set expectations for the week and communicate when we can get good time together, split up some of the chores that need to be done, as well as make sure we are resting well and planning fun activities with our family and friends.

Do you have children? We have the sweetest little 1-year-old! We know our family is not complete yet, but I am looking forward to taking some time to enjoy Ellie Kate before getting pregnant again.

Before getting married, I wish someone had told me… Every season of life has really sweet aspects, but there are new aspects of life in marriage that are amazing and you can’t experience as a single person.
This year, our family is most excited about… Enjoying our backyard! After the photos of our house were taken we took on the big project of re-landscaping our backyard, and we can’t wait to enjoy it now! We have a gas firepit, long farm table with string lights that go over our entire backyard, grass, and native Texas plants! Our dog tore up our yard before so we are now reclaiming it as our shared space with Cooper. We are also looking forward to family vacations this summer at the lake.

What is your favorite memory from your wedding? Our first dance at our wedding was really special to both of us. We danced to the song “All I Want is You” by Tristan Prettyman.
How do you remember your wedding in your home? Pictures mostly. Each year on our anniversary we watch our wedding slide show and reminisce on the beautiful evening from the comfort of our living room while drinking our wine from our wedding. The décor we had at our reception is also scattered around our house: cake plates, a box with photos, blue mason jars, etc. We have three of our favorite photos from our wedding hanging on the wall in our bedroom too.

Is there anything else about your home or family life that you think our readers would be interested in? When many people think of a home they think of the things that go in them, but we hope when people think of our home, people think about the memories that happened here, the stories shared, the lessons learned, the meals shared. Don’t get me wrong, as an interior designer, I definitely care about how our house looks, how we use our space intentionally, and that each room functions well, but if we had a beautiful house with no one to share it with, it wouldn’t feel like home to us, it would just feel like a pretty showroom. I loved the book Bread and Wine and often have to remind myself to have people over even if there is a big mess in the kitchen or even if I didn’t have the time to cook a gourmet meal. Just light a candle and turn on some music and enjoy the moment with the people around you.

Thanks so much for sharing your hearts and home with us, Christine and Drew! If you want to see more of Christine’s lovely design work, be sure to check out her website.

Jessica and Sawyer may have chosen to forgo a few traditions, but they made sure that sweet Southern hospitality was not one of them! Since they had guests coming to town from all over the country, they wanted to give them a taste of what they love about Texas through their venue and menu selection. Opting for a laid-back vibe, these two chose to add only simple decor to the already-lovely Brooks at Weatherford and let their Tex-Mex menu (fajitas and margaritas!) shine! And of course, their dance floor was open all night! I think I might be having guest envy, y’all!

Big SW hugs to< a href="http://www.sarahmckenziephoto.com" target="_blank">Sarah McKenzie for sharing their special day with us!

I knew exactly what I was looking for before dress shopping: something classic with sleeves and lots of lace (think Kate Middleton). I actually only went to two stores, and my wedding dress shopping was complete in one day. It was an overwhelming, but super fun, experience, and my mom and I had a great time.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t sweat the small stuff. I know it’s so hard not to, but seriously, it doesn’t matter! Your guests will not care if you forgot to print the ceremony programs or if you left your guest book at home. Try to remember that this whole wedding thing is about marrying each other!

We didn’t participate in too many traditions, as we wanted the focus of the day to be our marriage and getting to celebrate that with friends and family. However, since we had guests from all over North America, we wanted them to be able to experience all that Texas had to offer. Everything from our venue to our food and drink selections were meant to give guests a taste of what we love about Texas!

Sawyer popped the question in a sweet, private setting when we had a moment alone, which was exactly what I had wanted. We arrived home to a private family celebration, but the big surprise came the following week! I was surprised with a giant engagement celebration, courtesy of our TCU friends. I had friends who drove from all across Texas to attend, and we had an absolute blast, complete with a margarita machine and a freestyle rap battle (it was epic). It was such a sweet surprise and easily one of my favorite memories.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We decided to use a set of vows recommended by our church, and just changed a few pieces to better fit our relationship. This was my favorite verse/line that I read: “Today, I am reminded of James 1:17, which says, ‘Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights who does not change like shifting shadow.’ Besides the gift of salvation, you are the most precious gift God has given me.”

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I think the most memorable moment of our wedding day was eating dinner together in the bridal suite. After the ceremony, we chose to eat alone so we could spend a few minutes relaxing. Our caterer brought in plate after plate of fajita fixings and two margaritas, and we got to sit on the couch, feet up, pigging out together. It was SO nice to have a moment of peace to enjoy our food and process the day before entering the craziness of the reception.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Since we were having Tex-Mex for dinner, we went with a triple Mexican vanilla cake, plus a Texas chocolate sheet cake for the groom’s cake. We wanted to give our out-of-town guests a taste of Texas while they were there!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I think my favorite part of our wedding was the laid-back vibe. We went for simple decor, dinner was fajitas and margaritas, and the dance floor was open all night.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Sawyer and I met pretty early on in our college careers at TCU, through a mutual friend, but didn’t get to know each other until we started working on a philanthropy project together junior year. I needed a date to my sorority’s formal that same fall, and the rest is history!
When did y’all get married? July 22, 2016
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 140
Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did decide to do a first look! This was a recommendation from our photographer, Sarah, and was seriously the BEST decision. Taking photos (especially in the July heat) can be a less than fun experience, so getting to take most of our photos pre-ceremony was a huge relief. It also helped calm both of our nerves; Sawyer is my best friend and I didn’t want to spend our entire wedding day apart. We were able to spend more time with friends and family after the ceremony, and we got much more quiet time alone as well. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who is on the fence–walking down the aisle was still incredibly special and emotional!
Describe your wedding flowers. I wanted our flowers to be the focal point of our decor. We wanted lots of neutral shades of white, cream, and dusty blues, along with tons of greenery accents. Our florist, Sage Fine Flowers, executed this beautifully! We had lots of hydrangea, thistle, greenery, and succulents that all came together to create a very light and summery look!
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? We participated in a marriage class and premarital counseling through our church. It was a great way to get to know each other on a deeper level and prepare to live together as a Christ-centered couple.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge we had was working within our budget. Events are my passion, so it was important to me that this day reflect us as a couple. We ended up having to prioritize what was most important for us and the guests. Things like fancy invitations and monogrammed napkins got cut from our priority list, but we didn’t end up missing them!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? My wedding coordinator, Tracey, really helped keep my stress levels in check. I think that a lot of people assume that if they like planning events, they can get away with coordinating a wedding on their own. My full-time job is planning events, but no matter how experienced you are, it is impossible to enjoy your day as a bride without a dedicated person on-site running interference for you. I wanted to enjoy my day and I wanted my friends and family to do the same, and that would not have been possible without Tracey. She kept things running smoothly, and was crucial in pulling all of the final details together for me so that I had more time to enjoy my engagement season.

What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? Sawyer and I are living in Fort Worth and already have what feels like a herd of dogs (it’s actually only two). We are looking forward to experiencing life together, traveling, and spending time with the people we love!

After looking at their fair share of wedding venues (eight!), Dani and Andrew knew that Legare Waring House was the one for them. They were drawn to the pristine beauty of the plantation, and especially loved the Avenue of Oaks (how could you not?)! With this beautiful backdrop chosen, they worked with their planner and florist, Fox Events, to create wild and natural florals that were not only sweetly feminine, but also the perfect complement to the glamorous mix of metallic elements in their design. And how fun is it that their officiant was the same friend who introduced them on a blind date five and a half years prior?

Big SW hugs to Aaron & Jillian for sharing their sweet day with us!

I probably tried on close to 50 dresses from at least five bridal boutiques before I found THE ONE at Sarah Seven. I went with my sister-in-law and a close friend, and the minute I walked out of the dressing room, they both screamed, “THAT’S IT!”

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? Yes, there was no question whether or not we were going to do one! First look photos are my favorite pictures from weddings–they’re always so sweet.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend, who ended up officiating our wedding. I knew Andrew’s sister prior to meeting Andrew, but it wasn’t until a Christmas party when this mutual friend suggested to Andrew that he had to meet “this girl, Dani” that we were set up.

We each wrote our own vows, which was fun, but challenging! It’s hard to express those feelings in just a few sentences. We think our videographer’s favorite line from the vows was Andrew’s line: “The joy you have given me over the past five and a half years has saturated my soul, and I promise for the rest of my life to try with every fiber of my being to repay you.” He included it in both our trailer and full video!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? After Lauren Fox took us to eight wedding venues, we knew that Legare Waring House was the one for us. We couldn’t get over the pristine beauty of the venue–so stunning and green, and we ESPECIALLY loved the Avenue of Oaks!

Our wedding flowers were wild and natural, yet utterly feminine, and fit the outdoor plantation perfectly! The color scheme played nicely with the grays and natural wood elements of our wedding, while the mix of metallic elements added the perfect amount of glamour.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The florals were stunning and the food, superb. The band, Super Deluxe, nailed every song; we’ve received so many compliments about them! Cru Catering provided the best wedding food we’ve ever tried, period. Overall, we could not have asked for a more perfect day!

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take care of all the big things first (find a wedding planner, book photographers, videographers, a band), and then take your time choosing all of the smaller details. But don’t procrastinate too much–the last thing you want is to be stressed about things close to your big day!

Tell us all about the proposal! Andrew’s sister was going to be in Chicago for a visit to see friends. Recognizing the opportunity, Andrew set the wheels in motion. He flew to St. Louis to ask my father for my hand in marriage, put the finishing touches on the ring, and invited family to Chicago for the weekend to (hopefully) celebrate. After planning an elaborate ruse revolving around a fake Cubs game, brunch, and a photographer, Andrew’s plan was thrown into chaos when I realized I needed to work most of the day on Friday, April 17. Panicked (even more than he already was), Andrew proposed in our apartment, just the two of us. He had arranged for a celebratory brunch at a restaurant, where the entire family was there to surprise me! Later that night, Andrew invited all of our closest friends/family over for the perfect engagement party.
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 130
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We repurposed the “blessing over the wine,” which was read by my great uncle and his wife. It was a beautiful tribute to both of our heritages.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Wild Flour did the most beautiful-two layer cake. The larger bottom tier was vanilla cake with dulce de leche buttercream and salted caramel; the smaller top tier was vanilla cake with lemon curd, coconut buttercream, and toasted coconut.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? It can be challenging to stay within a budget. It’s great to have wedding planners (like ours) who are there to help guide you to stay within your budget, and to advise you on areas where you can make cuts that won’t jeopardize the look you’re trying to accomplish!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We just got back from a delayed honeymoon in Antigua, which was incredible! We look forward to enjoying time together before we add to our family in a few years :) We also look forward to celebrating with all of our friends with weddings around the corner!
