As much as I love cozy evenings at home, I must admit, I’m giddy with excitement about all of the date opportunities that spring and summer weather open up! These photos of McKenzie and Pearce’s picnic date only encouraged my spring fever–since these cuties live in Florida, they get to enjoy the sunshine for most of the year, which I’m sure has something to do with the five ideas they chose as their favorite dates. I know I’m definitely inspired to pack up a picnic basket or find some bikes to take for a spin, and I hope you are, too!

The couple: Pearce and McKenzie Fussell
By day: Pearce is a middle school teacher and I work for Emily Ley as the Community Development Director and write my blog, Winsome & Gold, on the side.

Their love story: Oh goodness, where to begin?! Pearce and I grew up in the same small town (Fernandina Beach, Florida, on Amelia Island) but didn’t officially meet until he wound up as my math tutor during my freshman year/his senior year of high school (thanks, Mom!!!). I knew who he was and thought he was THE cutest thing, so naturally, I was thrilled to find out I’d get to spend my mornings with him! After a few sessions, I actually ended up “firing” him as my tutor because I had developed a pretty big crush and had the hardest time focusing. True story! We ended up dating a few years later and vowed to love one another forever and ever (Amen! Ha–thank you, Randy Travis) on May 26, 2014 in our hometown. It has been the greatest adventure! His faith and passion for people brings me so much joy. I definitely married up!

McKenzie and Pearce’s five favorite date ideas:

1. Beach picnic: It’s so nice to get out of the house (especially when you work from home!), avoid the crowds, and spend uninterrupted time connecting in such a beautiful location.

2. Biking around the Amelia Island Plantation: This is the neighborhood I grew up in and where Pearce and I were married, so we always make stops to see our wedding venue, the beach, and the marsh. Oh, and a final stop for ice cream, of course!

3. Coffee shop day date: Pearce is a bit of a coffee snob. He loves a great coffee shop and a drink he’s yet to try. I’m not as adventurous as he is in this department, but I never turn down a Dirty Chai and a fresh bakery treat! Grabbing a cup of cuban coffee at Hola (in downtown Amelia Island) or the Amelia Island Coffee Shop, followed by a walk downtown past my favorite historic homes and art galleries, will never get old!

4. Weekend getaway: We love a good road trip and have quite a few gorgeous Southern cities within a few hours of home (St. Augustine, St. Simons, Jekyll Island, and Savannah, just to name a few!). We’re heading up to Jekyll next week for a quick trip. We spent our honeymoon at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, so this one will be a trip for the books!

5. Mexican night: Pearce and I LOVE Mexican food and rarely turn down an opportunity to eat it. I received a Mexican cookbook for Christmas, which led to some of the most delicious Mexican food date nights! Throw in a salsa dancing lesson (thanks to Youtube) and you’ve got yourself an affordable, fun-filled night at home!

Thanks so much, McKenzie and Pearce! Follow along with McKenzie here:

Making date nights a priority is not always easy–case in point, the SW gals all try to go on at least one date night with our beaus per month, and we check in at the end of every month to keep each other accountable. In February, only one of us had made it! We’re committed to doing better in March, and if you’re in the same boat as us during this busy time, I hope you’ll be as encouraged as I was reading Hilari and Grant’s top five date ideas. Their favorite dates are all about simple activities, quality time, and great conversation with one another–and isn’t that the point of dating your spouse in the first place? Enjoy, friends!

Thanks so much to our Blue Ribbon Vendor Meredith Teasley for capturing these sweet photos!

Names: Grant and Hilari Williams
By day: Grant loves numbers and spreadsheets and works in financial sales. Hilari is a masterful organizer and logistics lover, and works as project manager for a boutique marketing/advertising agency.
Where they live: Nashville, Tennessee
Tell us your love story, in a few sentences. We met at the last tailgate of our senior year at Vanderbilt–our mutual friends thought we’d be a perfect match. It turns out they were right! I was completely smitten after meeting him and knew he was the one even before our first date. We got engaged two years after we met, married 18 months later, and are now happily settling into married life. Our entire relationship has taken place in Nashville (minus a summer in NYC and many weekend getaways), and we feel fortunate to live in a city that holds so many happy reminders of our journey.

Tell us about your wedding! We got married on May 16, 2015. Our wedding was a glittery gold affair full of love, laughter, and celebration. Because we met at Vanderbilt, we chose to have both our ceremony and reception at Belle Meade Plantation, an iconic Nashville venue. 95 percent of our guests traveled from out of town to celebrate with us! We wanted the day to be full of our favorite things and to not only celebrate our marriage, but also our amazing friends and family who have been with us throughout our journey.

Hilari and Grant’s five favorite date ideas:

1. Football and picnics in the park: We love food, football, and being outside, so one of our favorite dates is to throw the football around at our neighborhood park. I’ll pack a picnic full of our favorite foods (definitely including homemade cookies) and prosecco, and we just enjoy each other’s company. We find that this time together allows us to unwind, connect, and people watch.
2. Radnor Lake: Grant’s grandparents used to live right down the street from Radnor Lake, so he has many fond childhood memories of lake adventures, always complete with a stop at Granny White Market for banana pudding. We love to go in the afternoon just as the sun sets–some of our most meaningful and memorable conversations have taken place as we walk, talk, and take in the magnificent natural beauty found right in the city. And the banana pudding that follows can’t be beat! It’s homemade with the same recipe used for decades.
3. Tacos: Need I say more? We share a love for tacos, chips and salsa, and margaritas! Thankfully, Nashville has a variety of taco offerings, so we are always trying new places all over town. We usually combine trying a new taco shop with exploring the neighborhood it’s in–it’s almost like playing tourist in your own town, and makes for a fun weekend date!
4. Marriage group: We are blessed with the opportunity to be part of a marriage ministry of sorts–four couples married for less than one year meet with a mentor couple (married for over 35 years). We meet every Tuesday night and will continue to do so for two years. We read scripture and books, and most importantly, talk and learn from each other during this exciting phase of life. Before our group meets, Grant and I go out to dinner, talk about our goals, values, and upcoming events, and align on “us.” We find this time truly grounds us in our marriage and we look forward to sharing our newlywed journey with others walking the same path. We’ve found that a supportive community has been instrumental in our happiness and positive outlook on life!
5. Planning adventures: We love to see the world, explore new places, and try new things. While adventures are amazing ways to connect and experience life together, it’s not always feasible to have an adventure every single week! So, we make it a priority to always have something fun planned on the calendar. Whether it’s a cooking class, tropical vacation, mountain adventure, or nearby hike, it gives us both something to look forward to and allows us to spend time together planning excursions, meals, and more. We are both a little bit OCD and love the time we spend together planning ahead almost as much as the fun outcome!

I’m not sure what it is about coffee shops, but I was recently reminded while on a coffee date with a friend (that lasted three hours!) that there are few better places to cozy up, relax, and enjoy some great conversation. Y’all may remember Melissa and Will from their wedding feature a few months ago, and now that they’re well into their first year of marriage, we were excited to catch up with them and learn about a few of their favorite date ideas. At the top of the list was a coffee date, and with a place as cute as Not Just Coffee to frequent, I can’t say I’m surprised!

Thank you so much to Allison Kuhn Photography for these beautiful photos!

The couple: Melissa and Will Mackvick
By day: I was recently laid off from my job (a true blessing in disguise from the sweet Lord), so I currently spend my time trying to figure out what my niche is career-wise. Will spends his days working as an associate at an investment bank here in Charlotte. He is a busy bee, but is doing a great job managing his work/life balance, which means so much.

Where they live: I was born and raised in Greensboro, and Will grew up in Raleigh–a place near and dear to our hearts, as that’s the city where we met during our junior year of college. For the last few years, we have been calling Charlotte our home and are absolutely smitten with the Queen City! We are Southerners through and through!

Their love story: Our love story is simple but sweet, and my all-time favorite. In January 2010, I was introduced to Will by some of our mutual friends. We spent some time getting to know each other that night, but ended up going our separate ways. A few days later, I couldn’t stop thinking about Will and reached out to him over Facebook. I invited him to a Valentine’s celebration that my friends were hosting, and the rest, as they say, is history! We were engaged in July 2014, and tied the knot in June 2015.

Melissa and Will’s five favorite date nights:

1. Coffee Talk: It’s almost impossible to begin our days without a cup (or two) of coffee, and we love starting off our weekends by heading to one of our favorite spots in Charlotte to “sit and sip,” and sometimes do our devotional. Not Just Coffee, The Mayobird, and Sunflour Bakery are some of the shops we frequent, depending on the mood we are in and the atmosphere we desire.
2. Game Night: Will and I are both competitive, so games let us get that side of ourselves out in the spotlight! You can often find us playing Scattegories or Checkers, or having friends over to play a few rounds of Balderdash or Wits and Wagers. We always lose track of time laughing and having fun…never acting our age!
3. Walk it Out: Our schedules always seem to fill up with never ending to dos, so we try to carve out time to spend together by doing something good for our health, like going for walks. We usually bring along our dog to give him some exercise, too, and love using this time to explore our neighborhood, find cute trails to walk, and just spend uninterrupted quality time together (my love language).
4. Root for our Home Team: Will is a huge sports fan and I love people watching, so it’s always a win-win for us when we go to sporting events. Going to baseball games to root for the Charlotte Knights is a summer favorite.
5. Movie Nights: Since Will often has to travel for work, there are nights (and even weekends) when we don’t want to leave the house…so we don’t! Instead, we pop some popcorn, make ice cream sundaes, pour a glass of wine, and watch movie after movie. We make a day of it! I’ll generally pick a movie to watch, then Will gets to pick one, so we both get to watch something we find entertaining. The number of movies and shows we have watched is A LOT!
