Southern Weddings Weekly Round-Up

by in Main on

A LOT has been going on this week, and the best thing about it is how many opportunities there are for you to join in the fun! This week alone, we launched our annual reader survey (be sure to take it to receive an exclusive shop discount, plus a chance to win a date night on us!), posted two model calls for upcoming Southern Weddings V9 editorial shoots, AND opened our summer internship application. Few things fill our hearts more than hearing from y’all and connecting with you face to face, so whatever might be right for you, we hope you’ll jump in! :)

From Maegan and Jared’s wedding, by Heather Hawkins

In case you missed it this week…

Emily and Michael: Lawn games, signature cocktails, and a flower crown in Virginia.
Leila and Sterling: Wildflower bouquets, a lace gown, and mountain views in North Carolina.
Maegan and Jared: Stunning flowers, mismatched bridesmaids, and a dessert display in Texas.
Alicia and Ian: A museum venue, cactus details, and a unique groom’s cake in Texas.

Model calls! We’re looking for reader models in both Atlanta and Hilton Head.
This Kansas City wedding film is sweet as can be…especially thanks to the cute pie buffet!

Have a fun weekend, and congratulations to anyone getting married!!

I’m convinced that I learned more during the internships I did throughout college than I did in many of my journalism classes (sorry, school!)–there’s just nothing like getting into an office and diving right in to the hard work to help you realize if the field you’re interested in is the one for you! We love opening up our office to an editorial intern every semester, especially in the summer (one of our busiest seasons). Here’s what we’re looking for in a summer intern this year!

– An undergraduate student who can commit to working approximately 20-25 hours a week in June and July. We would ideally love someone who could start in late May and stay into August, as well, for a total of about 10 weeks.
SOMEONE WHO LOVES WEDDINGS. More than anything else, we want to work with someone who loves weddings and has a KEEN familiarity with weddings, wedding trends, the wedding industry, and the wedding publishing industry. A deep love for the South is important, too!
– A great work ethic is super important to us, as well as someone who loves to learn, can work and problem solve independently, is very responsible, and is a self-starter.
Strong writing abilities and firm grasp on grammar. Familiarity with Photoshop, InDesign, and WordPress would be a bonus.

Every Southern Weddings internship is a bit different, but here are some of the things you can expect to experience:
– Sitting in on and contributing to weekly staff meetings and brainstorming sessions
– Learning the basics of working with a WordPress blog and the Adobe Creative Suite
– Writing a post on the blog and/or copy for the magazine
– Researching images and information for features
– Researching, requesting, and tracking products for editorial shoots
– Assisting on site at editorial shoots
– Building portfolios on the SW site
– Assisting with our social media accounts
– Getting a firsthand view of how a bustling magazine, blog, shop, and small business run with a small staff of women

Sound like something you’re interested in? Please fill out this form by Thursday, March 24 at 11:59pm. Please let us know in the comments if you have any questions. Please do not email your application to us or email us to confirm receipt. We will be in touch with applicants who we think might be a good fit within two weeks of March 24.

This position is unpaid, but we are happy to work with you to get college credit if that’s something your school offers. We know this will be a great learning opportunity! If chosen for the internship, we will need you to work in person at our Chapel Hill office, but any college student who can get themselves to Chapel Hill for the summer is eligible to apply.

We can’t wait to hear from y’all!!

Hi Lisa and everyone at SW! I have been so looking forward to applying for the summer internship position for 2016! However, I am currently studying abroad in Italy and am traveling this week away from my computer. I therefore do not have access to my résumé and writing samples for the time being. If there is anyway for me to still apply and send those remaining documents a few days after the deadline I would be so appreciative. Please let me know if this is a possibility! Thank you in advance for your time and consideration! Looking forward to hearing from y’all!
    All the best,
    Rachel

Hi Rachel! You’re welcome to still apply, and then email me the documents separately as soon as possible ([email protected]). Have a great time traveling! :)

Hello Lisa and the Southern Weddings ladies!

I am trying to submit my application and it says that the file size of my writing sample is too large. It is a one page PDF yet I am unable to upload it. Thank you in advance for your help with this troubleshooting issue.

    Warmly,
    Emily Hope

Hi Emily Hope! Sorry for that inconvenience–I’m not sure why it won’t upload. Please feel free to email your writing sample to me ([email protected]) and submit your application form without it. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I don’t know about y’all, but I think one of the best feelings in the world is lounging on the beach with a good book, which is why I’m excited that Southern author Mary Alice Monroe is releasing her newest novel, A Lowcountry Wedding, on May 3, just in time for those warm beach days coming up! As the fourth installment in her New York Times bestselling series, this newest addition shares the story of three half-sisters and their grandmother working to rebuild family bonds, all while showcasing the unique loveliness and charm of both a seaside and a plantation wedding.

A longtime resident of Charleston, Mary Alice knows firsthand the beauty that the Lowcountry has to offer, and uses its Spanish moss-draped trees and refreshingly laid back Southern elegance as inspiration in her novels. Sounds right up our alley!

Not only are we so excited for this book to hit the shelves, but Mary Alice is offering readers an amazing gift to celebrate: the chance for one couple to have a free (yes, free!) dream wedding in Charleston! She has teamed up with the Charleston Area Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and Ashley Rhodes Event Designs (the talented lady behind this and this wedding we’ve featured, to name a few!), along with many other talented vendors, to give away a wedding to a very lucky couple.

To enter, simply fill out this form, which includes a place to submit a brief video highlighting why a Lowcountry wedding is important to you and your beau. The deadline to enter is May 31. A panel of judges will then select a handful of finalists on June 13, leaving the rest of the contest in the hands of the public to vote for the winner (to be announced on June 27)!

For more information and details of this fabulous prize package, head on over to Mary Alice Moore’s website, Facebook, or Twitter. Don’t forget to look for A Lowcountry Wedding on shelves this May (and our fingers are crossed for you and your beau)!
