It’s true, Southern Weddings V6 is going to be our BEST issue yet! So how could we not celebrate with our favorite people? That’s why we’re throwing a big ol’ bash to celebrate, and all y’all are invited!

We are so grateful for our dear readers, vendors, and sponsors, and are SO looking forward to hugging some necks on Thursday, November 14! Come on down to the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill for delicious nibbles and sips inspired by our latest issue and to pick up a goodie bag filled with surprises. There will be corn hole, toe-tapping music, video screenings, sweets, and, among other things, the best photo booth around!

As some of you may remember, our launch party for V5 actually sold out and we weren’t able to accommodate everyone who wanted to come. We’re in a bigger ballroom this year, but be sure to get your tickets early!! To attend, you MUST RSVP! For a glimpse of what’s to come, check out last year’s recap post.

Attention Tennessee readers and vendors! Our friends at Amber Housley Weddings are throwing a mini satellite launch party in Nashville, and would love to see you there if you can’t make the trip to NC! You can see all the details here and RSVP here!

We can’t wait to see y’all soon as we toast to six fabulous years of Southern goodness!!

Much love,
Lara, Emily, Nicole, Marissa, Kristin, and Lisa!

P.S. Don’t forget to wear your finest silver and blue!

P.P.S. If you are one of our many friends traveling in from out of town, there are plenty of options in the area! Unfortunately the Carolina Inn is sold out for the night, but we’d recommend checking the Aloft in Chapel Hill, the Hampton Inn in Carrboro or Chapel Hill, and the Franklin in downtown Chapel Hill.

So excited for the launch of the new issue, now if I only lived in NC I could actually attend.

It’s no secret I love my job — after all, there are very few ways that someone who loves weddings and loves the South as much as I do would prefer to spend her days! My usual routine at the Southern Weddings office leaves me happy as a goat in a briar patch and thoroughly satisfied. But, sometimes working at SW affords me experiences that are literally out of a dream, and I fall in love with my job (and weddings, and the South) all over again. Such was the case with Engage13.

I recently accompanied Lara to this amazing conference, held at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville (she was speaking!), and we enjoyed three days of learning, meeting new friends, and details to make any wedding lover weak in the knees. One party in particular we just knew we had to share with y’all — the opening party, designed by Pressed Cotton and held in a renovated barn on the Biltmore property!

The party began the minute we stepped off the buses at Antler Hill Barn — with a grown-up petting zoo! Lara and I couldn’t resist snapping a photo with this adorable baby goat.

So many of these fun rustic chic details are available in the Pressed Cotton store — perfect for wedding decor and details!

These gorgeous kraft paper menus outlined everything we’d be sampling that evening, including pulled pork sliders, corn spoon bread, fried pickles, short ribs, and much more!

Many of the beautiful rental pieces you see are from Settee in Atlanta. After walking through the barn, the space opened up into a beautiful courtyard with biscuits on each long farmhouse-style table! We loved the kraft paper runners.

Hot boiled peanuts! Lara was in heaven.

Cheerwine! I was in heaven. (You may recall we served it at our wedding.) They couldn’t have designed this party more perfectly for us!

The gentleman you see below was one of our favorite people we met that night, though he wasn’t technically a guest at the party! He’s an actual blacksmith on the Biltmore staff, and was giving demonstrations throughout the evening. We got to chat with him a bit, and found out that his wedding was six days away! He even showed us the (gorgeous!) ring he’d forged for his fiancee. We’re hoping to bring more of his wedding story to the blog soon!

The night concluded with s’mores by a massive bonfire. It’s true, Engage does share some characteristics with summer camp!

Oh yes — these adorable screen-printed snack bags were waiting for us when we stepped off the bus at the Inn at Biltmore! The perfect end to a perfect Southern night. Thanks to Pressed Cotton, the Biltmore staff, and Rebecca and Kathryn of Engage for a delightful evening!

This looks honestly perfect beyond words. Absolutely every detail is too Southern for words! I love all of the signage & those welcome bags are beyond amazing.

Please tell me this means y’all will have a recap of the Gatsby party? I’ve been dying for some inspiration pictures to share with a friend who is planning a similar themed wedding.

  2. avatar Lisa reply

How incredibly fun! Y’all must have felt right at home! I have my fingers crossed for a Gatsby gala recap too :)

Loved re-living this evening through this blogpost, Em! You represented it perfectly. I’ll never forget devouring that oh so delicious BBQ slider with you after being so hungry. Best food of Engage by far :). Cannot WAIT for the Blacksmith’s whole story to be revealed!

Looks so fun! I’ve been dying to visit the Biltmore for ages. So jealous!

Yes! Just beautiful…I love the Biltmore Estate! I would love to attend this next year for sure…since I live right here in Asheville anyways! I am trying to read everything I can find about this conference, and so far this is the best I have found! I especially like the sign “Sips, Y’all.”

Since I’m sure many of you are (or are soon to be) elbow deep in flour and sprinkles making cookies for friends and Santa, I’m sure our recap of our second annual Gingerbread Barn Building competition comes at the right time! This year, we saw twice as many people come out to build the sweetest barns below the Mason-Dixon and the competition was fierce, y’all. Thankfully, we had the great pleasure of meeting Anna Kirby, who was on hand to document the festivities.

We gathered at The Carolina Inn, where our good friends Heidi and Melissa had set up a hot chocolate and cookie station for us. Readers, friends and vendors came rolling in with their best holiday aprons and then got to work brainstorming the best barn concept.

In addition to the Carolina Inn, we loved partnering with Hammond’s Candies again for this event! They gave us plenty of peppermint, green and red candies, chocolate-filled delectables and giant candy canes to build with. The Southern Weddings ladies may or may not have stolen a piece or two from the candy table at multiple times during the night.

All of our contestants were so creative. The only limitations we put in place were that the barn has to be confined to the plates we gave them and that all of it has to be edible. With those two things in mind, our competitors took off with their ideas! We saw everything from barns with wedding ceremonies inside to plantations with cows and windmills!

We also had a ton of fun showing off V5, especially because some of our guests were vendors who contributed to the issue.

At the end of the night, we had to give the first place prize to the ladies who dreamed up this next creation: a gingerbread plantation with a barn, windmill, cow pasture (with little footprints!) and silo. They even had one of the cows breaking through the fence! Too cute.

We want to give a giant thanks again to our event sponsors, The Carolina Inn, Hammond’s Candies and Anna Kirby and to everyone who came out to celebrate the holidays with us. Spending time with our readers is always one of our favorite things to do (especially when accompanied by sweets and hot chocolate).

Happy Holidays, y’all!

Anna Kirby is a member of our fabulous Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory!

It was so much fun being part of this event on Ustream! The winning house was a delicious masterpiece lol. Did anyone ended up eating their houses?

    • avatar Nicole reply

Yay! We’re so glad you tuned in, Dee! A lot of people brought theirs home to eat (always my favorite part), but a few people chose to leave theirs behind because they didn’t think the barns would survive the bumpy car ride home!

  3. avatar Kathryn reply

I love the intense photo of my SIL placing our roof! And of course I like the photo of my candy designs ready to decorate the barn. Everything looks so pretty, and we had a great time building our barn! Thank you for letting us participate!
