Many of you may not know that I used to work for a country music station. A live feed of the station was played over a loudspeaker throughout our entire offices, so I may even be able to rival Miss Emily when it comes to country music trivia! One of my favorite songs became Lee Brice’s Love Like Crazy, because in the song, Lee encourages couples to “overuse ‘I love you.'” To me, those simple words are such an important aspect of marriage, sometimes being the only thing to say in a circumstance. So, when I read that Lauren + Adam’s reverend had them begin their traditional vows by just telling each other “I love you,” my heart leapt! Lauren also said that with these three simple words, all their nerves were gone. I imagine this was such a wonderful moment to witness.

Big hugs to Robyn Van Dyke, one of our darling Blue Ribbon Vendors, for sharing their big day with us!

One of my absolute favorite moments happened during the ceremony. Reverend Motley asked everyone to bow his or her head as he prayed for our marriage, and as he was ending the prayer, Adam pulled me in and kissed me on the forehead. I love that moment in particular because it felt like it was just the two of us up there together, even when there were 200 sets of eyes watching us. Another favorite moment was the time spent with my bridesmaids before the ceremony. We all wore oversized button-up shirts, which included monogrammed pockets (a DIY by my sister/MOH) and enjoyed sipping our champagne through straws and mason jars from Shop Sweet Lulu. That morning, I also received notes of encouragement and sweet wishes from all of the girls in my college sorority. These little moments brought me so much peace and joy and that I will always treasure.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. To my surprise, finding my dress was the very first check off of our wedding to-do list. My mother and now mother-in-law decided on a whim to take me to Victorian Rose Bridals in Raleigh to try on a few dresses. Knowing it was still very early in the wedding planning process, I had little expectation of finding “the one” already, but it just so happened that the second dress I tried on was everything I wanted. It had ivory alencon lace over champagne charmeuse, an exposed back, and a sweeping train–it was perfect!

While all the grooms we feature are quite dapper, I am dying over this polka dot tie! Too much fun!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Genesis 2:7, 18, 21-24 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-13
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them.
The music for our ceremony was soft and elegant. We hired a violinist and kept to wedding ceremony classics. Adam and I knew from the very beginning that we wanted The Craig Woolard Band for the reception. The band is not only the perfect combination of beach music, Motown, and country, but they are also the band that entertained several of our first date nights. For our first dance, we danced to “Nothing Can Change This Love” by Sam Cook and for the daddy/daughter dance, we danced to “My Girl” by the Temptations.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Adam and I decided not to do a first look, because we both liked the idea of keeping it traditional. I will never forget what an amazing feeling it was to see his reaction as I walked down the aisle!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Although we did not write our own vows, I loved that our Reverend had us begin our vows by just telling each other “I love you.” It took all my nerves away!

Our reception menu was Southern-inspired all the way! We served chicken and biscuits, BBQ sliders with coleslaw, green beans, sweet potato mash, sweet tea (of course!), and several other traditional Southern favorites. I also loved how our favors came out–we gave our guests navy koozies with bow ties on them–and I love that Adam wore the needlepoint belt I made for him.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Adam and I are just about as different as they come. He’s from the country; I grew up in the city. He’s the youngest of three boys; I’m the oldest of three girls. He loves being in the spotlight; I’m perfectly content standing in the back. But opposites attract, right? We first met while attending a summer camp called Camp Willow Run, where we were introduced by my counselor. We kept in touch here and there and eventually ended up going to the same college. We also both worked as summer staff at the same camp where we met as campers. Adam hardly talked to me all summer, so it completely took me by surprise when he asked me to be his date to his brother’s wedding on the last day of camp. Ironically enough, Adam’s brother was marrying the very same counselor who had originally introduced us. Small world!
Tell us all about the proposal! Adam once told me that no one expects to get engaged in the morning and he was most definitely correct. I woke up on a Thursday morning in January to a surprise breakfast delivery from Adam. Along with breakfast came a letter. As I began reading the letter, I realized that this was a little more than just the average morning date. Before I could even begin to question what was going on, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him. It was a pretty great way to start the day!
When did y’all get married? March 23, 2013
How many friends, family, and loved ones attended your wedding? 200
Describe your wedding flowers. The Sutherland’s natural beauty and rustic walled-garden inspired us to keep the ceremony simple, casual, and intimate. We selected baby’s breath, roses, and hydrangeas for floral arrangements, and kept to soft shades of ivory and blush for the décor.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We decided to choose a cupcake stand over a wedding cake for our dessert. The stand included a 6” spice cake on top and 18 dozen mini cupcakes in four different flavors: Simply Cinnamon, Wedding Cake, Lemon Zest, and Red Velvet. We liked the idea of giving our guests multiple flavor options while still being able to partake in the traditional couple cake cutting.
Did you have something borrowed, something blue, and something new? If so, do tell! While my mom was zipping up my gown, she showed me a piece of her wedding dress that she had sewn into mine as my something old. I love that she surprised me with that! My navy heels were my something blue. My grandmother’s wedding band was my something borrowed, and my sisters gave me a gorgeous engraved bracelet as my something new.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Figuring out how to seat 200 people in a ballroom that seats 175!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We still laugh so hard when we look back at the pictures from our photo booth! Also, Our venue gave us a complementary ice sculpture. Typically, couples choose to have their monogram carved into the ice, but instead, Adam and I decided to use it as an opportunity to proudly display our favorite college football team, the East Carolina Pirates!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our photographer was absolutely incredible! I love that it was a husband and wife duo that could tag team during the ceremony and reception in order to capture all of the day’s festivities. I also felt really blessed to walk away from my wedding experience with pictures that so clearly depicted the emotions felt that day. Robyn was so patient and willing to go the extra mile for us, and I am extremely grateful for that!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Have fun on your wedding day!! I can honestly say that my wedding day was the best day ever, and I think every bride should feel that way about her special day.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We want to travel! I’m most excited to continue “growing up” with Adam and to experience life with him–I’m lucky to have a husband who is also my best friend and spiritual leader.

Weddings are always special and beautiful, but they are also so, so much more than that. They bring families together and begin new ones. They join two people who have chosen each other, over anyone else in the world. And in the midst of suffering, they are a much-needed source of happiness and comfort. Joan and Matt fell madly in love on their first date, and after months of Matt planning a proposal, there was an unexpected tragedy in Joan’s family. Her family urged him to go through with his plan anyway, and he asked Joan to marry him. As you can see in these beautiful pictures from their wedding, sure enough, their beautiful day was full of Georgia sunshine and the sweetest joy. We are so inspired by their love story!

Thanks so much to Soli Photography for sharing Joan and Matt’s wedding with us!

Matt and I met while working at a newspaper in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I was a reporter and he came to the paper to help run the magazine division. He had seen me around the office and was trying to find a way to meet me. He later told me he thought I had one of the most beautiful smiles he’d ever seen. When we ended up in a meeting together, he fumbled around with what to say and acted awkward, but I liked him anyway. We had a lot in common, and I was taken by his vivacious personality and style. I asked him if he wanted to get coffee and he said he wanted to get drinks instead. We went to sushi and he told me his whole life story before the check came. We didn’t want the night to end. So, we went to a historic riverboat on the Tennessee River and drank Jack Daniels until we couldn’t see straight. We made friends at the bar with a blind guy and two Scottish bikers. We fell madly in love that night and we haven’t been apart since.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I found my wedding dress at Boutique Couture, a wonderful designer shop in downtown Chattanooga. It was love at first sight on one of my first trips shopping. All lace, fitted, with a heart shaped neckline and a glamorously long train. My mom told me I would be crazy not to get it, so I did.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We went traditional and I don’t really regret it. When Matt saw we walking down the aisle, he cried and cried. It was such genuine emotion, and it felt so special on our wedding day. Matt just loves surprises, so having see me for the first time at the altar felt like the ultimate in surprises.

We wrote our own vows, and it was what most people said was their favorite part of our wedding. We listened to our pastor, who said we should say what we wanted, but that we needed to remember the traditions, too. In Matt’s vows, he told a beautiful story of when he first realized I would be his wife. Before I read mine, I told him I was shocked he had written his so well. I thought I was supposed to be the writer in our family.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The barn and the farm were our favorite elements. Matt grew up on a dairy farm and my family raised cattle. It meant a lot to us to have the wedding near animals and on scenic land. I dreamed my whole life of dancing under string lights in an open barn with the hay bales stacked above.

Our wedding shouted the South from beginning to end. We had horses and goats in the fields. The party was inside a traditional old barn. We hung lace doilies that my mother in law made. We used old depression glass and milk glass to decorate. We ate BBQ and country pies and danced to my favorite country music. I wore boots under my beautiful wedding dress. And I tried to be the kind of Southern bride my grandmother would be proud of. I went to every table and thanked every guest for their attendance.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had a small wedding cake decorated with billy balls and succulents, as well as several country pies. The groom’s cake was chocolate peanut butter and comic themed. Our desserts were so popular that we didn’t even get a piece of anything.

Tell us all about the proposal! Matt had been planning the proposal for months when our family received tragic news: my sister Dalta had been killed in a car accident a week before Matt planned to ask me to marry him. He had just traveled to my home in Birmingham, Alabama to ask my sisters and parents for their permission. We were devastated, but he was my rock. My father told him to go through with his plan, despite the pain we were suffering. Just 11 days after my sister passed away, he got down on one knee in front of my entire family and a group of close friends. He had made signs to put along the road to lead me to him and had my family in on his plan. Each sign detailed a beautiful moment in our relationship. Then the last one said “The Most Beautiful Moment Ever” and the arrow pointed to him holding a sign saying “This Moment.” For the first time in days, I saw my parents smile again. It was bittersweet, but I was overjoyed that the man of my dreams was asking me for forever. I jumped on top of him when I saw the ring. It was huge!
When did y’all get married? April 13, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? Over 200
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Music is important to me and Matt, so we wanted our selections to be songs that meant a lot to us. We love Peter Cetera because his songs are so dramatic and Matt loves “Karate Kid: Part Two.” Our first dance was to “Glory of Love.” We learned a ballroom dance to go with it. I also sang Garth Brooks’ “To Make You Feel My Love,” because I think it is one of the most wonderful expressions of true love.
Describe your wedding flowers. The flowers included garden roses and ranunculus in yellow, orange and light pink. The whole bouquets with greenery looked untamed, like they were just picked from a field.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The hardest thing about planning the wedding was trying to grieve the loss of my sister at the same time.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? I am most thankful for our wedding planners, the girls at Homespun Weddings and Events, our photographer at Soli Photography, and our florist at The Daily Flower. They really brought our imagination to life and had fun in the process.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The best moment was standing beside Matt during the ceremony, seeing his excitement and joy, hearing his vows, and kissing him for the first time as his wife.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? I would say go with your gut. Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing or thinking. Stay true to your vision as a couple. Don’t get too caught up in comparing your wedding to other weddings. Things won’t go perfectly, but it will be the imperfections that bring humor to you later. Soak in every minute, because the day will speed by so fast.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Everyone told Matt and I that the first year would be terrible, but we are loving every minute. Right now, we are thinking about our career futures and where we want to live next. I am trying to talk Matt into getting a beagle puppy.

We’re extra excited to share today’s gorgeous wedding, because Juliet and David have both been on Southern Weddings before, but as vendors! You can find Juliet’s lettering here and David’s photography here. Knowing how talented this couple is, we were not surprised at all that their North Carolina wedding was so lovely and ethereal. Their wedding planner, Laura of Ashton Events, is not only one of our delightful BRV members, she is also a friend of the bride and groom, and she played an instrumental role in David’s proposal!

Hugs to Alicia Swedenborg for sharing Juliet and David’s wedding with us!

Tell us all about the proposal! Long story short, I was heading down to Florida (where David lived) for a visit. A wedding planner friend, Laura Helm, asked me to assist her on a styled shoot that Friday in Lakeland. I arrived at the most beautiful ranch, ready to help set up. The shoot was beautiful–it included a handmade sailboat, a sweetheart table set for two, cafe lights strung from tree to tree, cute love notes spread throughout, and fresh flowers everywhere. Shortly after the videographers and photographers arrived, Laura sent me on a trip to the store for a few last minute things she forgot. After returning, the “Mr.” and “Mrs.” signs on the backs of the chairs had been switched out to say “Mr. David Lapham” and “Mrs. Juliet Lapham.” On the table was a note addressed to “Juliet Grace Jones.” It was a love note from David with words leading me to look up, where he popped out from behind a tree. After a few sweet words, David got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. Afterwards, we ate cheesecake, sipped on sparkling white grape juice and danced the night away!

I have been in love with Claire Pettibone’s dresses for years. I always knew I would wear one of her beautiful creations. There are not many stores in North Carolina that offer her dresses, but J. Majors in Charlotte does, so that was the first place I went. When I saw my dress, I knew it would be mine. I’ve never had a dress fully represent me as well as this dress did. The femininity, the lace, the ribbons–I could go on and on! It was perfect!

Describe your wedding flowers. Call me crazy, but our flowers were picked out literally two days before the wedding! We were on a tight budget and actually found our florist at the farmer’s market in Charlotte. She put together all of the bouquets and David’s boutonniere. Our wedding planner, Laura, arranged all of the centerpieces the day-of. I was so in love with my flowers! They did a great job!

My most memorable moment would have to be just before the ceremony began. We originally planned on an outdoor ceremony. Just about five minutes before the ceremony began, all you could hear were loud thunder rumbles and lightning strikes. Clearly, the outdoor ceremony I initially wanted was not happening. The groomsmen met me at the cottage where I was getting ready with umbrellas in hand. Everything was chaotic and everyone was scurrying to get inside. But looking back, it was SO much fun! All you could do was laugh at the situation. When it came down to it, despite the rain and everything getting washed out, it made the ceremony that much more memorable. It was far more intimate and perfect inside–I am actually glad it rained!

Our wedding took place on an equestrian farm in Mooresville, North Carolina. It represented the South in the best way possible. From the plantation-style home on the property to the horse stables, it was the South at its finest!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: How can you just choose one?! One detail that sticks out to me would have to be the favors. David’s mom worked so hard to make maple syrup on their family farm, so it was a sweet touch to our wedding.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. David and I met at Southeastern University through a mutual friend. We were just friends for about a year. I even recall giving David dating advice here and there. Little did I know, this boy was trying to steal my own heart. And he did just that! David surprised me and took me to Disney World on Valentine’s Day for our first official date. I mean… Disney World? On Valentine’s? Talk about an incredible start to a relationship. We dated for two years before getting engaged.
When did y’all get married? August 10, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 80
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. The songs we choose for our ceremony really set the tone for our wedding. I have always been in love with the movie Father of the Bride, so we chose our favorite songs from that movie for most of the music. For example, the bride’s processional was “Snow Scene” from Father of the Bride, which makes me cry every time I listen to it! Our communion song was “Come Thou Fount,” sung by David’s best man, Corey Voss. The recessional was to “A Soulful Hallelujah” by Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir. Our first dance was to “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra, and the father/daughter and mother/son dance was to “Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We kept things simple with a classic white cake with lavender on top. We also had a family friend make individual mixed berry pies, which were delicious!
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? As practical as it is, we decided against the “first look” idea. Ever since I was a little girl, I always looked forward to walking down the aisle towards my groom and that being the moment he saw me for the first time on our wedding day. THAT moment was my favorite moment of the day, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We kept things simple and chose to say traditional vows.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed was a handkerchief David’s mom gave me to carry on my wedding day. It had belonged to her mom, who passed away shortly after David and I started dating. It was so sentimental to me. My something new was so many things, but definitely my dress. Something old was my earrings. Something blue…am I allowed to say my groom’s tie? :)
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? There were a few challenges: planning a wedding states away, having a small budget, and changing our venue two weeks before the big day (yep, you heard right)!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We were so honored to have Laura Helm of Ashton Events by our side on our wedding day. She flew up to North Carolina the weekend-of and helped bring everything together! I do not know what we would have done without her! We were also super thankful for our photographer, Alicia Swedenborg. We entered a contest when we first got engaged for a photography giveaway and Alicia chose us! We were so blessed by her being there and capturing our day.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Make sure you focus on what really matters – you and your love becoming one! Do not spend time stressing or worrying about the details of your wedding. It will all come together, and if it doesn’t – who cares?! You’re married and that’s all that matters! I know you’ve heard it before, but the reason why you heard it many times is because it’s the truth!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are just so excited to have this time enjoying the newlywed life! We are hoping to travel and share as many adventures together as possible. We would love to start a family in the next couple of years as well.
