Hello, ladies + gents! You’ve waited patiently enough: I’m back with another wedding planning update! This time I thought I’d tell you about our ceremony and reception locations.

Contrary to popular belief, I was not the girl who had her wedding planned down to the last detail years in advance (I love weddings in general, not my wedding, specifically!). In fact, there were always just two things I knew:

1. I wanted to be married in September.
2. I wanted to be married in Connecticut.

Happily, John enjoys the month of September, as well, and he just so happens to also hail from the fine state of Connecticut.

Though it took weeks of frantic searching to find a reception venue (more on that below), our ceremony spot came together quite easily. We knew we wanted to be married in a church, and we knew we wanted our pastor from North Carolina to be able to lead the service. We ruled out both of our childhood churches fairly quickly (mine doesn’t have a center aisle, his is not the most scenic, and neither of us are that connected to the current pastors), which left one obvious answer: the Memorial Chapel at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London.

A few reasons why we love the CGA Chapel:

1. The Chapel welcomes visiting clergy, meaning there were very few obstacles to the pastor from our church in North Carolina performing the service.
2. It’s in a spot central to many of the reception locations we were considering, and only about 15 minutes away from the location we finally landed on.
3. My Dad is retired Coast Guard and taught at the Academy for 25+ years, so I have very happy memories associated with the base.
4. It is gorgeous!

Love that blue and all that gorgeous light!

With our ceremony spot secured, we put our heads back down and plowed on with the reception venue search. Ready for another list? Here’s what we were looking for:

1. A spot that was scenic, by the water, and able to be tented.
2. A venue without excessive restrictions or requirements (including but not limited to noise ordinances, lists of vendors from which you’re required to choose, and overly restrictive time schedules).
3. Somewhere that was not terribly expensive. Since we planned to tent and knew our “infrastructure” costs would not end with the site fee, we didn’t want to pay excessively for just a pretty spot of land.

WELL. I think it’s safe to say that we looked at most typical venues in southeastern Connecticut, and some atypical ones as well. Harkness, the Branford House, Jonathan Edwards Winery, Saltwater Farm, the Inn at Mystic, Florence Griswold, the Mystic Seaport, Lower Farm… oh yes, we looked at them all and then some, and came up empty, whether because of cost, space, date availability, or a combination thereof. (If you’re planning a wedding in Connecticut and are interested in all the details, you can check out the posts I wrote on my personal blog here + here.)

Yes, friends, we finally got so desperate that John literally sat down and began scrolling along the Connecticut coastline in Google Maps, calling out “Here’s a piece of lawn! Here’s a piece of lawn!” And you know what? It actually worked! One of the pieces of lawn he stumbled upon happened to be the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, and that, my dears, is where we will be holding our reception. In their Sunken Garden, to be specific. I had never once considered this venue before John found it, but now I can’t imagined celebrating anywhere else!

Pictures? Of course! Here’s the stone wall of the garden, with water view beyond:

Keep in mind that poor Connecticut suffered serious damage from Ms Irene a week or so before these photos were taken, so hopefully all these trees will have leaves next year!

Below: The view of the garden from one corner. There will be mowed grass and a tent here next September!

Next door to the garden is the porch of the Yellow House, where we might hold cocktail hour (minus the picnic tables, obvs).

Here’s the view from down below, looking back up toward the house and garden.

Stick a softly glowing Sperry tent in there and you’ll have our wedding. Maybe something like this?

So there you have it: our ceremony and reception venues! What do you think?

Tell me: Did you have a hard time finding your spots to celebrate, or was it the easiest part of the whole process?

Up next: I think maybe we should talk about my first two dress shopping trips — what do you think? They were pretty fun!

In case you missed a post…
I introduce the happy couple

All photos personal except final, which is from the Sperry website

We had too many venues that we liked so we decided to only visit 4 because it became to overwhelming. Two came out as our favorite and then by the end it was what felt more like us as a couple and where can we see ourselves saying “I Do!” and dancing all night long with our family and friends. Your venue is beautiful Emily! Congrats :)

    • avatar Emily reply

Sounds perfect, Whitney! We actually didn’t visit a single venue in person (though I had been to many of the ones we considered over the course of my life, living in the area). I’m so glad we loved our reception spot once we actually saw it in person! :)

I spotted the venue we chose online – I was out of town and sent my parents there to check it out. They called me back and said, this is your venue. I put my faith and trust in them and God, and let them sign the contract before I even saw it in person! When I saw it, I knew they were right. An art gallery in an old factory-like building in downtown Birmingham. Check out the link to see a reception there – http://www.elizabethannedesigns.com/blog/2010/03/03/real-weddings-tessa-blake/

Congrats on finding your venue! It’s definitely such an exciting time and you realize that, you’re getting married there!! CRAZY! My wedding is next November in Raleigh and the reception venue I picked happen to be because I saw Megan and Steven’s wedding on HERE at the stockroom and fell in LOVE! I wanted the Cotton Room or Bay 7 in Durham but they were a little pricey and as soon as I saw the wedding in April I emailed immediately to find out the pricing even though I wasn’t engaged yet! Luckily I got engaged on July 6th! Whew!

But as for dress shopping.. don’t get me started. It almost felt like I would never find the one… It was daunting! How do you choose one when you can barely choose what to wear in the morning?! AH! GOOD LUCK and best wishes! I’m sure you’ll be b-e-a-utiful! P.S. Nitsa’s is amazing and Alexia’s in Cary! ;)

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Amanda! SO glad you found the Stockroom through SW!! Megan is actually a good friend of mine, and I know she was very happy with it! Also, have heard great things about Nitsa’s and Alexia’s, and I think my Mom and I will be heading to Nitsa’s next month!

Oooh ooh! I love it! Those tents are divine. And the ext. of the church is my favorite!! Good choices! And yes, please tell us about your dress adventures next!!!!!

I love the Sperry tent, wow! I’ve been engaged for four months now and I’m beginning to panic over selecting a venue and finally having our date set. My fiancee and I live down in Atlanta, GA and both of our families are up in Michigan, Metro Detroit to be exact. I did go and venue hunt during the holidays, ten sites to be exact and I just feel lost. Not one captures my heart as I had hoped for. Some of the pricing was beyond our means and the other places looked very tired. I’m really leaning towards a tent as well but where to put it is the problem. I’m a bit frightened by the DIY process but it feels like that’s the only way to get exactly what you want in your venue. Am I the only one with this problem? Oh and our guest count is between 275 an 300 :) that can really make things difficult. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Lauren! I’m so sorry to hear about your venue troubles, but if it makes you feel any better, I think a lot of brides are in the same boat! If you’re interested in a nontraditional venue, I think it really helps to be planning in an area you’re very familiar with. In my experience, planning from scratch hasn’t been too difficult; you just have to be very realistic about the additional costs (lighting, generator, rentals, restrooms, tables, chairs, dance floor, etc., etc., etc.). I also thinks it’s almost a necessity to hire a planner to make sure everything is delivered, set up, and runs smoothly. I hope that helps a bit, and that you have a venue breakthrough soon!!

  10. avatar Laura Anne reply

Would you consider 4 hrs at the reception sight to be too limited? I’ve found the perfect venue, but they limit the actual event to that length of time :-/

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Laura Anne! If 4 hours only includes the reception, and not the cocktail hour or ceremony, then I think that would be enough time! If you’re trying to squeeze in both a cocktail hour AND reception, then that might be a tough squeeze.

  11. avatar Kat reply

Hi Emily!! I have loved reading all about your wedding :) I remember you wrote this post and came back to re-read because I just recently got engaged (insert a huge smile and a big YAYYY!). My fiance and I would love an outdoor reception and I adore Sperry tents. However, I’m nervous about implement weather. Are you planning your reception under the beautiful tent rain or shine? What if theres a huge thunderstorm? I know the tent will keep guest dry but I’m more worried about potential high wind or lightning. I’m a huge planner and implement weather is definitely a fear of mine. Any suggestions or wisdom you can pass on to a fellow bride-to-be?? Thanks so much :)

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Kat! Thank you so much for your kind words, and congratulations to you! We are planning to hold our reception under the tent rain or shine, which does make me a bit nervous. But one of the great things about Sperrys is that they all come with beautiful side flaps (clear on top, white on bottom), and there is a technician there throughout the reception, so if they need to come down immediately, it’s not an issue. Other than that, there’s not much we can do except pray for good weather! There will always be a certain amount of risk/uncertainty you have to accept if you’re going to use a tent, so it’s important to make sure you’re okay with that before you make the decision. Best of luck to you – I’m sure it will be beautiful either way!!

Sit a Spell: Lara Casey

by in Main, Personal on

For the final contestant in our Sit a Spell series, I present to you Lara Casey! Our dynamic Editor in Chief really needs no introduction, so I’ll let her take it away… – Emily

1.  My husband, Ari, and I eloped to Vegas after just having met five months before.  It was so not like either of us, but it was perfect.  We’ll be celebrating our six year wedding anniversary on March 18th!

2.  My grandmother, a true Southern belle from Alabama, is one of my favorite people on earth.  She’s a redhead, too, and feisty at that!  Grandma “Bunny” will be 94 this December.  I just talked to her and she told me to tell all of y’all hello and it’s wonderful to meet you here on this blog.  She doesn’t know what a blog is, but I told her it’s a place on the internet where all of my favorite friends read about pretty weddings and wonderful love stories.

3.  I used to be a personal trainer.   And at one point, I could deadlift 225lbs.   Useless skill, but fun to intimidate my male clients in the gym.

4.  There is an elbow in my rib.  No, really.  And a foot in my belly.  I’m due with my first baby – Grace Austin – in about 11 weeks!

5.  I’ve been eating the same breakfast almost every day (with the exception of about a dozen days) for the last 15 years.  Jay Robb protein powder and oatmeal.  It never gets old to me!  And I probably eat more Luna Bars than is legal.  I should be their spokeswoman.

6.  I am really bad at trivia.  Or anything to do with pop culture.  We cancelled our cable a while ago and I generally rely on my husband to tell me about current events.  Don’t ask me to name a band or pop star.  I’d lose.

Photos by Nancy Ray

7.  I got a D in tap class once.  OK, technically it was because I injured my knee running and had to sit out most of the class, but I was pretty terrible at it.  I went to school for music and theatre and design.

8.  I started the magazine on Microsoft Publisher.  Eventually, I taught myself InDesign by literally pushing all the buttons to see what they did.  Ever since I was a kid, I never read instruction manuals to put things together.  I get much more pleasure out of figuring it out myself.   One exception that I’ve learned the hard way on:  Ikea furniture. Do not attempt without the manual. Ever.

9.  I still don’t know who goes first at a four way stop.  I usually just wait for someone to go first or give me a funny look and pause awkwardly, telling me to go.

10. I genuinely love my job and couldn’t dream up a better group of women to work with every day. I pinch myself every day! Oh my stars, these ladies are the real deal – kind, genuine, hard-working and fiercely devoted to you, dear readers!

Hello, ladies! As I’m guessing you all know, I’m engaged!! Just four short weeks ago we sent out a post all about engagement rings. I wanted your advice, and y’all were too kind to oblige! I LOVED reading your comments about your rings, your pre-engagement searching, and — of COURSE — your proposal stories!

Well, now that I’ve got a ring and a proposal story of my very own, I wanted to be sure and share it with y’all! First, the story, which is simple and sweet. John surprised me with a weekend trip to Beaufort, North Carolina, an adorable seaside town, two weeks ago. Some of our favorite memories from our six and a half years together were made at the beach, and almost all of them happened near the ocean, so even though this particular coastal town didn’t have special meaning to us (yet!), beaches in general did.

We spent the day at Shackleford Banks, a barrier island famous for wild horses and tons of seashells. (Once the surprise trip was announced, I had a hunch that a proposal might be on its way, but nothing happened all morning or afternoon!) After getting cleaned up that evening, we headed for dinner at an ocean-side restaurant. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation (which is HIGHLY unusual, if you know John!), and we decided to take a sunset stroll. On our way back, I suggested we take a self-timed photo, which we’re famous for, since we were all dressed up. It turns out I was playing right into his plans, because instead of setting the camera to photo, he set it to video, and then proceeded to get down on one knee after I thought the flash had gone off! The rest of the evening was a happy blur.

We made a little video from the weekend, which you can check out here

And now, on to the ring! Here she is:

The story: back in January, John and I decided doing some initial engagement ring research would be an appropriate activity for our six year dateversary. (Come on, y’all have one, too, right?) We decided to check out Diamonds Direct Crabtree, since we’d heard good things about them and figured a store with a large selection of different styles would be a good place to start.

I feel as though I have to back up a minute and admit that though I consider myself a wedding expert, I know next to nothing about engagement rings — really! I had heard of the 4 Cs, but didn’t really know what “normal” ranges were for any of them, and didn’t really know too well what style I liked, either. Before our trip I did a little research and had a little talk with my diamond-fiend buddy (and former SW editor!) Katharine, and both were super helpful. By the time we visited Diamonds Direct, I thought I knew that I wanted a very thin, yellow gold band, I DIDN’T want a halo, and I was most interested in oval-shaped diamonds.

Here are a few of the inspiration images I gathered before our big trip:

Credits:
First row: oval gold engagement ring from Asprey, micropave cushion-cut engagement ring in platinum from Harry Winston; Second row: photo by Whitebox Weddings; Third row: horizontal gold setting from Marvin Katz, photo by Kate Headley

As you can see, I was pretty much all over the place. Happily, though, we happened to be paired with Raj when we stepped through Diamond Direct’s doors, and I think that made all the difference in our shopping experience! He was extremely kind, patient, and knowledgeable, and put us instantly at ease. We looked through many different settings and styles, and quickly realized a few things:

1) As I had heard, diamonds DO look bigger on your finger! Anything over one carat looked pretty ridiculous on my thin fingers. Hallelujah!
2) Ovals were not the shape for me. Surprisingly, I really liked the look of an emerald-cut on my finger, even though I had never been a fan of that cut before.
3) I actually liked halos, I just didn’t like halos that were bezel-set.

Two of the other styles I tried on.

Next we looked at diamonds. For those of you who are wondering…
— I couldn’t really tell the difference between a S1 and and VS1 or VS2 clarity, so that wasn’t the most important C to me.
— I could tell the difference between color, and “I” was too yellow for me. Above “F” was almost too white.
— GIA certification was also important to me.

It turns out that after that one visit John ended up placing the order for our ring (making a few modifications to the setting, which Diamonds Direct does for no charge!), and that was the extent of our ring shopping! We never did end up looking anywhere else. We found something we both loved at a price we both loved with a customer-experience we both loved, and though we could have continued the search for months and months, there didn’t really seem to be any need to.

After January, I truly put engagement rings out of my mind, making everything a wonderful surprise in June!

So now that you know my story, ladies, tell me what you think! Did you go ring shopping for ages? Did you go at all? How do you feel about yellow gold?! I was worried other people would hate it, but I love it, and the reaction has been great so far!

Good luck with all your planning. It’s so much fun!

Congratulations. Your ring is unique and stunning! I did not go shopping with my husband. I did however have a dream ring in mind, (Standard Tiffany’s Princess Cut) but what I got was the complete opposite. My ring was a complete surprise. A 2 ct. Cushion cut on a white gold pave setting band. I was floored by my ring! My husband took a “Diamonds” course with a friend of his who is also a manager at Mayor’s Jewelery. He ended up finding the perfect stone at a somewhat reasonable price. He also picked out the setting on his own. I can understand how shopping with your fiance is important to some girls, but I was happy to have it all come as a complete shock. I know the gorgeous ring on my hand was found with love, care and research, to me that is so thoughtful!

I think you and I had exactly the same ideas in mind when ring shopping! I wanted something unique and simple, and ended up getting a small halo around a nearly 1 ct oval. I have shared a link to our engagement shoot and the third row down is a picture of my ring!

I didn’t go with my husband to look for a ring, but he did flat out ask me what I would want (oh so casually of course ;) or so he thought) but I didn’t get the ring til about a year and a half later! lol Although, he did ask me REALLY early on in our dating about the ring (he told his Mom he would marry after only knowing me 4 months). Kudos to you and John both. Wish you the best and I’m looking forward to more planning posts!

Congrats!! I love the ring it is similar to what I had always wanted but didn’t get. I never went engagement ring shopping. My fiance is very old south where the girl should never know that an engagement is coming and surely no idea what the ring will look like. I got my “something old” from my fiance instead. The center 1.5ct round Harry Winston diamond was his mother’s original engagement ring diamond. His godfather had taken it and some other family diamonds and platinum jewelry to a custom jewelry maker and what they made is to me a true piece of art. It is a mixture of baguettes, small round diamonds and the center diamond. My southern boy truly knew the way to my heart with this one. And I was so surprised when he did propose out of the blue with it.

My poor fiance and I spent an entire year (and going to so many stores I lost count) until I finally cried over one that I slipped on my finger. After shopping for a year and a half and never falling in love with something, I had lost all hope and thought I would never get a ring. I was always displeased with the service at the jewelry stores because not one of the sales associates were listening to me. Granted I didn’t know what the correct terms to use, but I knew what I wanted. Thankfully we met a wonderful lady who has helpful, listened more than she talked and showed me an arrangement of different styles before she finally found me “my” ring. I’m over the moon estatic now! Congratulations again!!!!!!

Holy cow, Ashley! I definitely couldn’t have searched for a year, but I’m so glad you found something that’s perfect!

Congratulations! I actually loved the Diamonds Direct experience, too. (Just in Birmingham). My sneaky husband (of six weeks) went ring shopping without me. While I was out of the country he went with my best friend. They knew the style I would like, but weren’t sure what diamond shape I would like. When I got back in town my also sneaky bf told me we should go look “just for fun” for whenever David might “start asking questions”. I only went that one time. We never went together and he did a great job!

[…] We have SO much to catch up on, wedding-wise. Yes, this is my fault: I dropped the big news and introduced you to my pretty ring, and then left you hanging. But believe me, I’ve been a busy little bee over here! Things are […]

Its nice to see you went with a yellow gold engagement ring. Many people opt for platinum these days and feel yellow gold is old fashioned. It does take a certain skin tone to pull off a yellow ring and I have to say that tine of gold really suits you. The perfect choice of engagement ring I say :) Oh .. CONGRATULATIONS
