My wedding was four years ago last month, so I’ve had plenty of time to think on what I might have done differently. Thankfully, there are VERY few things I’d change about my entire engagement and wedding, including where we registered! I was a Crate and Barrel bride then, and if I were to register tomorrow, I’d still be a Crate and Barrel bride. Their modern, elegant, understated style is a perfect match for so many aesthetics! I’m still in love with the items we chose back in the day, but today, I thought it would be fun to dive back into their options and give you a peek at what my registry might look like in 2016!

I’ve marked with an asterisk the items I currently own and love! The rest are things I wish I owned :)

1. Pretty glass jars for storing flour and sugar.*
2. A workhorse French oven for soups, stews, and baked risotto – we use ours multiple times a week.*
3. A 30-piece glass storage set. Not the daintiest registry item, but probably the one our family has gotten the most use out of!*
4. Prep and pour bowls for Saturday morning pancakes!
5. A striped kitchen towel that’s soft in the hand and tough on spills.
6. Mixing bowls in chic Breton style!
7. Calphalon cookware set. Every pot in this set has been used over and over in our house. I love how easy they are to clean!*
8. I have been known to give people immersion blenders for their birthdays because I truly believe everyone should own one. A must if you love soup!*
9. From waffles to pancakes to quesadillas to veggie burgers, there’s (almost) nothing the Griddler can’t do! I love how easy it is to keep clean – just pop the plates in the dishwasher when you’re done.*
10. A classic white utensil crock that looks great on the counter.*

1. The Staccato dinner plates* were our pick for every day, and I can’t imagine ever getting tired of them! If I were registering today, I’d mix in the Savannah salad plate – dying over that gold rim.
2. A marble serving platter – equally good for displaying charcuterie and providing an Instagram backdrop :)
3. Don’t forget to add a few servings bowls, like the Mallorca, to your registry. You’ll be surprised how often you use them on weeknights and holidays alike!
4. My best tip on flatware – make sure you visit a store before adding a set to your registry. Forks and spoons can feel so different in your hand, and for something that will be with you for the long haul, you want to make sure it’s 100% comfortable! I was surprised by how bulky a few designs were in person.*
5. I searched for months and months for the perfect chair for our table. I eventually settled on Crate and Barrel’s Willa, but the Vienna has my heart, too!
6. If you don’t want to go all-in on a trendy material, choosing just a serving set in the finish is a great compromise! Love the rose gold Harper set.
7. Upholstered chairs at the table are a bit spendier (and make me a bit nervous with the possibility of spills!), so placing just one at each end is another great compromise. These would be my pick.
8. I think every kitchen should have a few wooden pieces, like these salad servers, to warm things up and keep it from feeling sterile.*
9. We went with the Rings glasses for our registry, but today I think I’d choose the Josie double old-fashioned for our everyday glasses – classic with a twist!

No matter your style, you’ll find pieces to love at Crate and Barrel because their collection of housewares and furniture is unlike any other. They collaborate with talented artists around the world to create pieces you can’t find anywhere else! Beyond aesthetics, they’ve got all the perks you and your guests will love, like 10% off on most items (even ones not on your registry!) for six months after your wedding; easy and convenient returns; and free shipping on registry gifts over $99.

Not a post title you ever thought you’d see on Southern Weddings, eh? :) If so, you’re right — we purposefully avoid the word “perfect,” because it’s pretty much the last thing we want you to strive for on your wedding day. Joyful, meaningful, emotional? Yes, yes, and yes. Perfect? No.

However — I truly believe that if you do just a few things on the day you say “I do,” you WILL have a perfect wedding, no matter what else happens or who says what or what your flowers looked like. Better yet, these things are all free. They may not be the normal wedding checklist items, but if you can do them all, I believe your wedding day will be joyful, meaningful, and — yes — perfect. Here goes!

From Jen + Alan’s wedding, by Michelle March

Write each other wedding morning letters. You know that phrase, “how you start the day determines the day”? It definitely holds true on your wedding day! Starting with the sweet, grateful, reflective act of writing a letter to your fiance will put you in the perfect frame of mind for all that’s to come. Use your letter to share the things you love most about your future husband and the life you’re about to begin together, then exchange them at your first look or via your bridal party.

Vow something true to each other. Whether you choose to share personal promises or the traditional vows, make sure that the words you say to each other at your ceremony are deeply meaningful to you. Make your promises ones that you can actually keep (with grace and hard work!), not just things that sound good in the moment. Your wedding vows are what you will return to over and over in your marriage as a marker of the highest ideals for your relationship, so if you can make them real and true and heartfelt, the most important part of your wedding day will be a success.

Honor your most beloved people. One of the beautiful parts of a wedding is that it’s the best excuse to gather all of your loved ones in the same place — and then to honor them! If you spend the day loving on these people — telling them how much they mean to you, unveiling special surprises for them, handing them letters you’ve written, and inviting them into special moments — I guarantee you will end the day feeling filled with gratitude.

Stay together. With all those beloved people around, it’s tempting to get pulled in a million different directions to chat with and hug as many guests as you can. But if you can, stay by each other’s side as much as possible (holding hands is an effective way to do this!). That way, you’ll experience the day together, and as funny as it sounds, your memories of this most important day in your life will match. It will only sweeten the day for you, and will sweeten storytelling about your wedding for years to come!

Take a step back. Finally, we ask each of our real wedding couples for their best wedding advice, and this is the piece that comes up over and over again: at some point during your reception, step away from the party with your new husband and take in the scene. Imprint the view of all the people you love most laughing, talking, dancing, and enjoying each other and the celebration you’ve put together. It’s a mental picture that will make your heart swell for years, I promise, and it’s another perfect moment to let what happened that day wash over you and sink in.

there are not enough heart eyes + praise emojis to express how much I love this! As always, you ladies have done a fantastic job at putting the focus back on the marriage. Another tip I would add goes with your step back + staying together tips. As a planner, I encourage couples to include a 10-15 minute “break” after the vows before they join the party to be together alone. We sometimes set up a small room with a plate of appetizers + glasses of the couple’s favorite drink + let them just be. I even had a couple once that scheduled a private dinner while everyone else went through the buffet. It was candlelit + even decorated by their florist. It’s also a great way to make sure you get something to eat – which can sometimes get forgotten in all the hubbub!

A few weeks ago, Emily and I tried our hand at something new: a Southern Weddings webinar! We had so much fun spending an hour chatting about all things bridesmaid/maid of honor with the attendees–we’re big believers that being asked to be in a bridal party is not something to be taken lightly, but it can (and should) be a joy and not a burden! We covered what to expect when you’re asked to be a bridesmaid/MOH, the typical duties for each role, and most importantly, how to go above and beyond to love on the bride throughout her engagement and on her wedding day. We also touched on etiquette and tips for some common conundrums, from what to do if the bridesmaid dress is out of your budget to how to diffuse potentially tough situations between the bride and other members of the bridal party.

Miss the live webinar? Not to worry! You can catch the replay here.

Top to bottom: Laurie and her bridesmaids by Cassidy Carson, getting ready robes by Robyn Van Dyke, glitter bridesmaid dresses by Esther Louise, champagne toast by Shannon Moffit

Our next webinar will be all about Southern wedding traditions, and especially if you’re getting married in the South, we hope you’ll join in! Save the date for September 20, and keep an eye out on Instagram for the registration link!

P.S. Are there any topics you’d love for us to cover in future webinars? Let us know in the comments below!

Cannot say enough how helpful this was! Used all the tips this past weekend for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in — the water for the bride and taking away her phone were particularly great!
