It’s my favorite time of the year! The National Stationery Show recaps are here and I’m thrilled to relive the three days I spent in New York meeting new-to-us stationers, hugging old ones and finding the loveliest wedding stationery around. (Okay, and there’s a really good dose of just plain cute and just adorably Southern stuff in here, too.) With Ruthie of Ruth Eileen Photography by my side, we spent hours ooh-ing and ahh-ing over hundreds of booths. You may have seen up posting up a storm on Instagram (here and here)! Join us in reliving the magic?

Knot & Bow have been familiar to us for quite some time — we love their packaging supplies! But we we happy to see a new collection of gold foil confetti cards, confetti packs, and giant confetti-filled balloons in their lineup — they’d make quite the festive addition to any wedding!

I know Marissa loves this booth as much as I do, being the two resident pug lovers at SW! Emily and Lisa had me hooked when they gave me a Lydia & Pugs calendar for Christmas, so I may have been overly excited when I introduced myself to Dawn, the talent behind these adorable paper goodies. The wedding collection of pugs riding off into married bliss is perfect for dog-lovers everywhere!

The Lifeguard Press both, featuring Lilly Pulitzer, Ban.Do, and Kate Spade was impressive as always. We were most thrilled to hear about a new wedding stationery line from Kate Spade that’s soon to release! Ruthie and I got a sneak peek from our friend Natalie Chang, and all we can say is that y’all are going to love it! (Just a hint: they didn’t stop at stationery — one of my favorite new items requires a needle a thread!)

We’re sure any Southern belle and beau would love to see these sweetly wrapped gifts at their bridal shower. Monogrammed gift wrap and gold foil state cards from Ann Page stopped us in our tracks. (I mean really, y’all — monogrammed gift wrap.)

We were so excited to find Emily Ley’s booth within our first hour of walking the show. As many of y’all know, she’s a good friend of ours and her Simplified Series has helped us stay connected to what matters most, both in work and life. Her new collection of journals and notepads are a beautiful way to keep track of wedding to-dos! (Also, how gorgeous are those flower arrangements by Michelle Edgemont?)

Wonderful surprises were found at Parrott Studio’s booth! Parrott’s newest addition of gold cake toppers was a fun find, and we loved that they were displayed on custom wedding cakes.

We got a good dose of Southern design when we stopped to visit SW friends, Stephanie Creekmur (top image) and Southern Fried Design Barn (bottom image). Y’all might remember seeing Stephanie’s “Sweet as a Peach” print in V5. Southern Fried Design helped us create sweet tea packet business cards!

I love the idea of using Paper Lovely’s letterpresses tags to dress up bridesmaid gifts or bridal shower presents. Not to get ahead of ourselves here, but we had to snap a photo of the “Hello Little One” card! Gals — save this one in your brain for Southern mamas-to-be!

The charm and warmth we found in E. Frances’ booth made us want to stay there and rest awhile. Their adorably illustrated cards were new to us, and we especially loved the gold foil and watercolor collection. Our favorite piece from the booth read, “forget the honeymoon, have a honey life.” Our sentiments exactly!

Part of the fun of walking the Stationery Show is seeing how everyone decorates their booth. Ave Estudio hand painted the lovelies pink blooms on her cream walls. We were hooked as soon as we saw her sweet illustrations and this bright pink gingham card!

We were quite familiar with Betsy White’s wedding collection, but loved seeing them roll out items that are for more every day use! I thought the sticker packs were perfect for dressing up outgoing love letters and paired nicely with their custom stamps.

Gold foil pulled at our heartstrings again and again. Haute Papier’s Haute Papier’s new marriage certificates spoke to us — we love wedding day keepsakes and can imagine these looking amazing framed in a newlywed home! Ruthie and I both spent a lot of time at Dallas-based Read Between the Lines’s booth. They’re all about keeping it simple and heartfelt.

Tammy Smith Design’s embroidery prints reminded me of my mom — we used to embroider pillows and wall art all the time! I love that this tradition lives on with a state-based twist. Just choose your state and follow the lines to add your own embroidery.

Do y’all have a favorite design from this batch? I loved sweet illustrations at E. Frances. Don’t forget to stay turned — there are plenty more paper goodies left to explore!

Though our mainstay is and will always be weddings around here, we love celebrating the parties that come along with nuptials, too. After all, one of the best things about being engaged is that, between engagement parties, bridal showers, bachelor and bachelorette adventures, crafternoons, and bridesmaid luncheons, there is no shortage of excuses to get together with loved ones. Just a few small details and a little careful planning can elevate a backyard get-together into a memorable celebration, as reader Meredith is demonstrating today! She and her husband threw an engagement party for his sister, and she kindly shared a few photos and tips to inspire your own wedding season celebrations.

We threw a backyard engagement party for my husband’s sister, Marielle. Marielle and Chris were recently engaged and we wanted to celebrate with family and friends in a big local party, since their wedding will be at the beach next year. We had lots of Southern garden party foods, like pimento cheese sandwiches, cucumber tea sandwiches, mac and cheese cups, and glazed ham biscuits. For drinks, I set up dispensers with lemonade, cucumber water, and sangria. A mimosa bar with an assortment of fresh juices and fruit was also available for guests to make their own concoctions. We had tables and chairs on the grass and lawn games to keep everyone entertained. There were some pretty competitive games of cornhole and giant Jenga! It was a fun afternoon of celebrating Marielle and Chris’ upcoming wedding! Here are a few tips I’d love to share from this experience:

1. Use what you have. When you start planning an event of any size, the first few decisions that you make will really influence the design and direction for the party. Once you know what kind of event you’re hosting, think of ways that you can use things you already have. Whether this is a big backyard space to host the party, like we did, tables and chairs you could borrow from family, cake stands or mason jars from your personal collection, or even friends that play in a band to provide entertainment, anything that you already have or can borrow will make life easier later.

2. Prioritize something. Pinterest is amazing for inspiration, but way too often it can be overwhelming when planning an event. Pin all of those gorgeous images as inspiration, but be sure to be realistic and don’t take on more projects than you can handle. Pick something to prioritize, too. Maybe you’re throwing a casual BBQ but you want to have an awesome dessert table set-up. Go for it! I find that it’s easier, especially during the planning phase, to pick a few projects I want to focus on, and keep everything else simple. For this engagement party, I wanted the atmosphere to be casual, bright and fun. Adding the fabric backdrop on our deck really added a lot to the ambiance. I also love flowers, so I really wanted the blooms to be bold and beautiful. I spent time picking flowers from local markets and had coral peonies delivered for use with my collection of vintage blue mason jars.

3. Know what to hire out. If cooking and baking for a bunch of guests isn’t your thing, don’t take it on for the party. Catering will save you time and energy that you can devote to other things. Enlist family or friends to help, if you can, but know your limitations. Maybe you’re into graphic design and you can design an invitation and logo or accessories for the party. If not, there are plenty of people on Etsy that will do it all for you! For this party, I set up a fun dessert table with a gorgeous cake from a local bakery and an assortment of homemade sweets that we made.

4. Choose your DIY projects. Save money and get crafty! One thing I loved about having the party in our backyard was that I had access to the space whenever I wanted. That meant that I could start projects as early as I wanted and I could start visualizing everything in advance. String up lights and streamers, make that cupcake display you saw on Pinterest, make those stir sticks for the cocktails. All of those details are sure to be appreciated by your guests! Personalization really takes everything the extra mile. I know our guests were really excited and impressed by all the little details that we worked on in advance! I loved the personalized stadium cups that I designed and had printed for the party, plus they served as favors and a save the date reminder for the wedding!

5. Be flexible. The biggest key to planning any party, or even wedding, is to be flexible. Don’t freak out if something has to change last minute. If the weather is bad, make a new plan and move on! Dwelling on what could have been won’t make you feel good and will make it harder to solve problems as they come up.

If you’ve ever researched tutorials for chic updos, pretty curls, or, our personal favorite, a fabulous Southern bump, you’ve probably come across the lovely Kate from The Small Things Blog. This talented blogger (and new momma!) is right down the road from us in Raleigh, and not surprisingly, she is just as wonderful at sharing marriage advice as she is at sharing her secrets to lovely Southern locks. We were so delighted to share her wise words in V6!

The best advice I heard before getting married was to not “set your husband up for failure.” In other words, don’t expect him to read your mind or do certain things without you telling him it’s important to you that he do them. When I expect things from Justin that I’ve never even mentioned that I wanted, and he doesn’t deliver, it’s simply unfair for me to be upset with him! It’s much better to communicate your needs and desires to your husband so he has an opportunity to impress you and love you the way you need to be loved.

Keep up with Kate
