Monthly Archives: April 2014

With her mantra of “grace not perfection,” it’s hard to think of anyone better to kick off the “At Home” portion of our Southern Newlywed column than Emily Ley. Many of y’all may know her as a great friend to Southern Weddings (she and Lara are BFFs through their work with Making Things Happen) or because you own one of her lovely and intentional products like the Simplified Planner.

Emily exemplifies what we’re hoping to communicate with these home tour/interviews – it’s not about having the “perfect” abode or having everything “done” before you can share it, it’s about finding joy and inspiration in what you have, where you live, and who you share it with. Though Emily shares often and openly about life with her family on instagram, we are so excited to share this first look into her happy Tampa home, courtesy of Shay Cochrane

Names: Emily and Bryan Ley
Years married: 6
Childrens’ names and ages: Brady, 3

Your love story in one sentence: A 16-year-old gal falls madly in love with the cute frat boy with the red jeep and dreams of how cute her married name would be…
Do you rent or own? We own our home in Tampa, Florida. Bryan lived here before we got married. We dream of one day building what we call our “forever home.” One of our favorite things to do is plan this space and mentally draw diagrams of rooms and closets and jack-and-jill bathrooms.

Tell us about the process of moving in together. Do you have any tips for blending your two styles? Ha ha! We have two different answers on this. My answer is that we moved in together and my crisp, white, airy, slightly country taste meshed perfectly with Bryan’s masculine, rich leather, hardwood style. Bryan’s answer is that I moved in, filled 19 bags with “donations,” and let him keep his airplane propeller and our vintage ’74 Bronco. (Okay, it might have happened a little like that… but we both adore our space now! He has been very sweet letting me have the reigns on our interior decorating).
Which room in your home is your favorite, and why? We live in our kitchen and family room. They’re very open to each other and you can find all three of us here at any given time. This space is very welcoming, full of natural light, and has been organized in a way that really works for our lifestyle. We remodeled this space a few years ago and made all the decisions (big and small) together. It was really fun to incorporate both our styles into one big room that truly feels like us and is still kid-friendly.

Where do you splurge and where do you save when decorating? What are some of your favorite sources for home things? Early in our marriage, our house felt very empty because we hadn’t accumulated many mementos and souvenirs (or even photos!) from adventures together. I made the mistake of filling the “white space” with random things (vases, fake flowers, knick-knacks) that had no meaning to us – they simply filled a void (if that isn’t a great metaphor for life, I don’t know what is!). As the years have gone by, we’ve slowly replaced the meaningless stuff with really special things that have specific memories or people associated with them. This is probably my favorite part about our home. Most of our decor pieces come from One Kings Lane, HomeGoods, or Target. We decided early to splurge on furniture that is great quality and may even be passed down to our children.

Who cooks dinner? Well, neither of us love to cook, but we get it done. I’m typically a very healthy eater. Bryan loves pizza and chicken wings and mashed potatoes. We blend our tastes together. On the weekends, Bryan grills a lot – I bought him a Big Green Egg smoker for his first Father’s Day and he’s a champ on it! He makes the best chicken and pulled pork ever.
What is your go-to weeknight meal? Weekend meal? I love soups and stews for the week. They’re filling and can be made really healthy (the boys don’t even have to know it!) without tasting like they’re missing something. On the weekend, we eat out on Saturdays and have a big family dinner on Sundays (much like my own mama does back home!).

Which items from your wedding registry do you use the most often? Definitely the staple kitchen supplies – nice non-stick pots and pans.
What different decisions, if any, would you make for your registry if you knew then what you knew now? I would have registered for great everyday dishes instead of our fancy china. We only use it once a year when we host Thanksgiving dinner!

What’s your best tip for balancing your relationship and other priorities in life (work, personal time, extended family, etc.)? Date night. We try to have an adults only, screen-free date night at least once a month. No cell phones allowed. We typically go to our favorite local spot, Catch 23, and have some wine (we love trying new wines together) and a long dinner. It’s so nice to reconnect and talk over a good meal.

How does your family handle finances? Do you use a set budget? When we got married, Bryan and I decided to put our individual strengths to work financially. We decided that Bryan would be “CEO” and I would be the “Office Manager.” I handle the day-to-day needs (i.e. paying bills that come in the mail) and Bryan manages our long-term, big picture financial plan (i.e. investments, insurance, retirement, etc.). I take an active role in these things by understanding the terms, meeting with our financial advisor with Bryan, and helping to make important decisions, but ultimately, Bryan leads us in this. He’s great with our finances, so I feel really fortunate to have him by my side with these things.

Do you have children? What are your hopes and plans for the future in this area? We do! Brady Ley is our sweet little boy. He’s three years old. He’s fantastic. Being his Mom and Dad is the greatest thing on Earth. We’ve dealt with infertility for a long time and continue to struggle with Baby Ley #2, but our faith and our commitment to each other make room for lots of hope and gratitude.

In 2014, our family is most excited about… growing together more. Brady is learning new things each and every day. We are in a unique situation (purposely) in that I work part-time running a full-time business and am able to be home with Brady in the afternoons and on Fridays. The name of the game in 2014 is to soak up these precious moments as a family of three. Hopefully, that will be changing soon, so we’re relishing every second that we’re able to spend with just Brady. We have much to be grateful for.

What is one small way you love or serve your spouse? I am a big believer in love languages. Over the past few years, I’ve been trying hard to learn Bryan’s love language. When we were first married, I would leave little love notes for him around our house or a surprise bag of M&Ms (his favorite) in the driver’s seat of his car. Acts of kindness and surprises are definitely my love language, so surely, that would be his too, right? But it wasn’t! And it hit me, recently actually, that his love language is in our finances. Sounds super strange, I know. Bear with me and get to know my husband here: Bryan takes his role as “Ley Family CEO” and co-provider for our family very seriously. In the past (and gracious, I’m still not perfect at it), I’ve been careless sometimes with excessive random Target trips for things we don’t need or too many trips to Banana Republic (my weakness). These excessive expenditures made Bryan feel frustrated. When I stepped back and realized that my respect for our finances was what made him feel the most respected and loved, it hit me like a ton of bricks! So, I serve my husband by respecting our finances more.

What has been the most surprising thing about marriage? The most surprising thing about being married is that marriage takes work and effort. My parents are incredible role models for us after having been married 37 years. The amount of respect they have for each other is remarkable and inspires us to always take a step back and remember what really matters most when things aren’t easy. Bryan and I have grown so much over the past six years, facing infertility and a high risk pregnancy together, living eight hours from our hometown and my family, and raising a son, all while pursuing our own careers. We’ve become pretty good about telling each other when we need a hug, when we need some time to ourselves, or when we just need a good glass of wine, Netflix reruns, and a hand to hold on the couch.

What is your favorite part of being married? Living with my best friend. No one makes me laugh like Bryan does. And on that same note, no one can make me laugh at myself like Bryan does. He encourages me to not take life so seriously and to truly soak up the joy in our journey. His lightheartedness is what won me over when we were just kids working at a restaurant together. Well, that and his handsome, crooked smile. :)

Huge hugs to Emily for giving us this glimpse into her family’s life! Be sure to pay a visit to her site, blog, and instagram.

A little reminder before you go: We have great things in the works for this column, but we’d love your help! Our hope is to feature REAL couples in the South – not just folks who write blogs (though we love them, too!), but also your inspiring friend, super talented cousin, or neighbor with the cutest house – the kind of person everyone would love to “e-meet.” If that sounds like you or someone you know, take a peek at our Southern Newlywed submission page and shoot us an email!

I loved this interview and glimps into Emily Ley’s family. I feel very related with her when she spoke about honoring and showing that she loved her husband. My husband feels more love when I take care of our finances too. It does sounds weird, but it’s just the way they are. Thanks for sharing the Ley’s family, I enjoyed it a lot.

Even though it has been over ten years since I lived there, I still can’t shake my love affair with Virginia, and more specifically, with Virginia weddings. Jenny and Jeremiah’s big day was equal parts elegant, rustic, classic, and romantic, and it’s the perfect example of why Old Dominion has a piece of my heart. As if the crisp blue and white color palette and seamlessly incorporated herb details weren’t enough reason to love this wedding, Jeremiah is an accomplished chef in Charleston, so naturally, he and Jenny spoiled their loved ones with the best of Charlottesville and Charleston’s cuisine, made by none other than their chef friends! Is there anything better than when a community comes together to make a wedding extra special?

Thank you so much to Sera Petras for sharing this gorgeous wedding with us!

Tell us all about the proposal! I had the opportunity to travel to Ethiopia and Kenya for a month and half over the summer, and when I returned, Jeremiah planned a trip for us before I had to go back to UVA. My family has been vacationing in Truro, Cape Cod since I was born, and Jeremiah has joined our family the last couple of years. It has become such a special place for both of us. Jeremiah proposed on the beach at sunset on the first night of our trip. His proposal was sweet and intimate and perfect!

Describe your wedding flowers. My vision for the flowers was to have a neutral palette that complimented the beauty of Rodes Farm and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. We went with a natural feel, utilizing lots of greenery and herbs to accompany the different varieties of white flowers. We were also able to incorporate herbs from our friends at Harvest Thyme Herb Farm throughout the wedding.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? I left this one up to Jeremiah. He decided to go the traditional route and see me for the first time in my dress when I was walking down the aisle.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. A friend, who is a beautiful singer, accompanied our piano player as I walked down the aisle. I let her choose the song and she could not have picked a more perfect one. It was called “Somebody Loved” by The Weepies. The combination of the song and her amazing voice had everyone, including Jeremiah, in tears.

Rodes Farm provided the most gorgeous backdrop for a weekend full of amazing memories. We chose this venue because of its beauty, the flexibility to hold all of our events in one place, and the ability to have all of our guests stay on or around the property. From the magnolia trees shading the porch of the brick farmhouse where we got married, to the historic barn where we ate and danced, the farm was the best detail.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Jeremiah and I wanted to include the traditions of both his current home of Charleston and our childhood home of Charlottesville in our wedding weekend. We accomplished this by throwing a Lowcountry boil and pig roast for our rehearsal dinner, and a Virginia-themed dinner for our reception. Most of our guests had never experienced a traditional Lowcountry boil, so we went all out to make it authentic, covering the tables in kraft paper and including whole blue crabs in the boil. For the reception, we assembled our favorite Virginia products that showcased the region, including country ham, local cider, apples, and cheeses.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Hire a wedding planner! We were lucky to have the awesome Amanda Gray of Ashley Baber Weddings coordinating for us. We could not have done it without her!

How pretty are these herb decorations? They’re a perfect detail for a chef’s wedding!

Jeremiah created the menu and had friends cater the wedding. He has so many chef friends, so it was natural for us to involve all of these wonderful chefs from Charlottesville and his fellow chefs from McCrady’s in Charleston.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Jeremiah and I are both from Charlottesville, but we didn’t meet until after I returned home from college. I was home working for a few months in between graduating and moving to Colorado, and we met at the restaurant where Jeremiah was a chef. After we started dating, we continued our relationship long distance. Jeremiah would fly back and forth to visit me once a month. After a year of long distance, Jeremiah moved out to Colorado to be with me!
When did y’all get married? October 5, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 80
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. After not finding exactly what I wanted at the stores in our area, I turned to the internet. I had a vision of what I wanted and couldn’t believe when I found my dress online. The day it arrived and I tried it on, I just knew that it was the dress for me!
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Food was a huge theme of the wedding, since Jeremiah is a chef. I had to pick out our cake by myself and was so nervous that he would not approve! Lisa at Hot Cakes was amazing and knew exactly what we wanted. Her first idea fit with our Virginia theme so well, I said yes right away: spice cake with fresh apple caramel filling and cream cheese icing. It was as delicious as it sounds!
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I had lots of new, a handkerchief for my old and borrowed, and a blue bow inside of my dress that my sweet seamstress surprised me with.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? By far, the biggest challenge was planning the wedding long distance, with Jeremiah living in Charleston. Between the distance and his travel schedule, he did not even get to see the venue until three months before the wedding. Thankfully, I had a wonderful support system in Charlottesville, including my family and bridesmaids, Charlie and Amy, to help me make our wedding amazing.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Everyone says it and it is really true, but the wedding goes by so fast! I am truly thankful to have the beautiful images that our photographer, Sera Petras, captured to help relive all of the wonderful details and memories.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Walking down the aisle and seeing my friends and family all assembled, and Jeremiah standing on the porch with the biggest smile on his face. I will never forget that moment–it was absolutely perfect!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Jeremiah and I are most excited to be ending our long distance relationship and starting our marriage together in Washington, DC. I will be working at Children’s as a neonatal nurse and Jeremiah will be opening his own restaurant.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Ariella Chezar flower workshop, cosponsored by our friends at Easton Events, in Charleston. Early spring turned out to be the perfect time to visit one of my favorite Southern cities, and my short trip was filled with delights for every sense, from the gorgeous blooms to the delicious eats to the charming facades down every charming cobblestone street. Had I not even ventured beyond the gates of my hotel, however, I think I still would have touched on all five senses – Zero George Street is a property that’s clearly been designed to delight!

First, though, the blooms! I wanted to share a snippet from the workshop here to give you a taste of what I experienced, but you can see much more in the current issue of Smitten Magazine!

All photos are by the talented Corbin Gurkin.

If you saw my first instagram upon arrival at Zero George, you might remember that I described it as “the home of your favorite Southern aunt – the one with exquisite taste.” This delightful boutique hotel really does go out of its way to treat guests like family – with warmth, ease, and joy.

Zero George makes it easy to continue my home metaphor, since the concierge desk is located inside the original carriage house and directly adjacent to the property’s (teensy but beautiful and custom) kitchen – the heart of any home.

On our way to my room, I learned a bit more about the property’s history, which is fascinating! The four main buildings all date from the early 19th century — two are original to the property and two were carefully relocated from elsewhere in Charleston, and they are positioned to form a garden courtyard that is the match of any in downtown. (That’s one of my favorite Charleston activities, by the way – peeking into lush and gorgeous gardens through ironwork gates!)

Photo by Meredith Perdue via Map & Menu

Since their transport, the four buildings have been painstakingly renovated with each detail thoughtfully considered. There are now eighteen studios and suites, each featuring original architectural elements like heart pine floors, high ceilings, period millwork details, and classic piazzas. The attention to detail did not surprise me in the least, considering that Lynn and Dean, the geniuses behind Easton Events, are also the proprietors of Zero George!

The particular guest room I stayed in had me rethinking the colorful palette of my own home, with its layers of texture from natural linen fabrics, casual slipcovers, inviting bedding, and sisal weave area rugs. SO calm and relaxing!

Photo on the left by Jamie Beck – I loved the keys!

And the bathrooms – oh, the bathrooms. Crisp, white perfection.

Breakfast is complimentary and served each morning in the main carriage house. It was so yummy I made sure to wake up early enough to partake every day (which is saying a lot for this late riser). Tart yogurt, house-made granola, fresh fruit and juices, pastries, and hard-boiled eggs, among other things, made up the European-style spread.

Personal instagram

Evenings at Zero George kick off with a wine and cheese hour, which quickly became a favorite daily treat. It was also the perfect opportunity to try out the many porches located throughout the property! I didn’t have a chance to sample it, but the Zero Cafe + Bar serves light bites in the evening if you’re worn out from walking the day away.

Photo by Meredith Perdue via Map & Menu

If you didn’t know better, you’d think Zero George had been around for years and years – from their well-proportioned porches to their tucked away drawing rooms, this place combines classic Southern charm with everything you could want in terms of comfort. It could not be a more perfect backdrop for a relaxing Southern getaway, a sweet Southern honeymoon, or even an intimate Southern wedding! (Yep, they do private parties!)

Photos by Jamie Beck

Zero George is situated in the historic Ansonborough neighborhood, which is to the east on the Charleston peninsula but just a short walk from King Street and the French Quarter.

Personal photos from around Charleston!

I promise that if you choose to stay at Zero George on your next trip to Charleston, your hotel will be much, much more than just a place to lay your head at night – it might even be the highlight of your stay. More info on this lovely spot here!

Now, on a bit of a different topic, I would love to hear: What are your favorite places to eat in Charleston? This time around John and I tried Poogan’s Porch, Husk, Hominy Grill, and Xiao Bao Biscuit (all delicious!). Let us know in the comments!
