Monthly Archives: July 2011

Soooooo….. yesterday we sat down to have our regular Wednesday afternoon staff meeting.   If you follow us on Twitter, you know a few these happen at these meetings.  First, we eat! Every week, we sample a different Southern specialty.

A few favorites from past meetings: sweet tea (naturally), Cheerwine, peach ice cream, fresh baked biscuits with peach jam, fresh local berries and honey, MoonPies, pecan pie, Krispy Kreme (born and raised in NC!) and, among many other favorites, cornbread muffins and Carolina blue cupcakes.   Yum!

Next, we dream up all sorts of goodness for y’all. This starts with everyone giving an update on what they are working on.

So, we start our meeting yesterday and everyone is a bit sleepy from the holiday weekend.   After asking for a volunteer to go first with updates and no takers, Emily gladly says “I have an update!”…. and PULLS HER HAND OUT FROM UNDER THE TABLE WITH AN ENGAGEMENT RING ON IT!!!!!! The room erupted in squealing, jumping (I must have touched the ceiling!) and a pile of hugs all at once!  I’ll let Emily tell you all the details, of course, but needless to say we had a hard time focusing on anything after that!   Emily, we love you and are so happy for you! Don’t get me started again. You’ll have to break out the tissues!  I am over-the-moon happy for Em + John!  Oh my stars! And hello… how cute is this!?

So, in honor of Emily’s engagement, today’s post is all about true love through the ages.  Emily and John have a love that will last and inspire so many, so I couldn’t think of a better occasion to start this feature!

I spent the holiday weekend in Florida with my family and got a chance to capture some of our family wedding pics of old. Every photograph you see here has a beautiful love story behind it.  Above is my great grandparent’s marriage certificate from their tiny 1909 Alabama wedding!  Wow, what a beautiful document!  My great grandparents were farmers and cared for 8 children, including my Grandpa Cecil.

Grandma Bunny + Grandpa Cecil’s wedding above.  They were married in the local church and then celebrated at the Austin family home in Monroeville, Alabama.  My Grandma’s secret to a happy marriage: “Be sweet to each other!  Do kind things, love each other tenderly every day and appreciate the little things.  Cecil used to bring me wildflowers with my coffee.”

My Grandma Betty’s wedding portraits above.  Hello gorgeous!  Who wouldn’t want stunning classic photographs like this!?  This truly takes my breath away.  Grandma Betty passed long before I was born, but I can only imagine what wonderful stories she would tell about this special day!

And finally, my parent’s sweet garden wedding above.  Their secret to a happy marriage as per my mom: “Laugh together, have adventures, love unconditionally and get out and dig in the garden together!”

GET FEATURED! We want to know your family love stories of old! We’ll be highlighting one special couple every week. So, send us your old family photos and a little bit about their love story or their Southern wedding. If you can, interview your parents, grandparents or great grandparents! Here are a few helpful questions to use:

Tell us about your Southern wedding. What was most memorable about it?

What was your favorite detail of the wedding?

What is your best marriage advice?

Send a pic and either this interview above or a little blip about their love story to Marissa with the subject line: VINTAGE LOVE. I can’t wait to see what y’all send in!

P.S. Congrats to the last post’s winners Natalie, Amanda R, Lori and LindenSend us your mailing address and we’ll get your cute heart and love sparklers right to you!

P.P.S. Congrats again to our very own Emily! My heart be still! I’m so excited!

Happy July, y’all! This is my favorite month of the year, but in order to really appreciate it, we should look back at all the Real Wedding goodies we brought to you in June. Emily, Sierra and Marissa are rounding up their favorite details. Take a look!

FAVORITE WEDDING DRESS: Marissa fell head over heels for Katie’s Vera Wang dress. It looks lovely on the dance floor! Sierra chose Katie’s beautiful lace gown as her favorite and Emily chose Emily’s flowy and lacey gown. We promise her choice has nothing to do with their matching names.

FAVORITE BRIDESMAID DRESS: The bridesmaids on the blog were in fine form this month! Sierra loved the alternating pink and blue dresses from Megan’s wedding. Emily was a fan of the romantic blush pink frocks that Katie’s ‘maids wore, and Marissa went for Katie’s stylish and perfectly tailored bridesmaids’ dresses.

FAVORITE FEMALE ACCESSORY: Sierra was a big fan of Katie’s classy hairstyle and hair accessories. Emily opted for Katie’s timeless veil, and Marissa feel for Megan’s adorable pink shoes!

FAVORITE MENSWEAR: We love these dapper men! Marissa chose the Southern and preppy bow ties sported at Katie + Brian’s wedding. Emily loved the clean suits and pink accents of Katie + Clark’s groomsmen, and Sierra went for the clean and simple suits of Katie + Nathan’s wedding.

FAVORITE DETAIL: Sierra loved the invitation suite that bride, Yeri designed and screen printed herself, while Marissa chose Katie + Clark’s colorful, painted signs. Emily fell for Towne + Andy’s decked getaway car.

FAVORITE BOUQUET: Beautiful flowers are always guaranteed in our favorite weddings. Emily was a big fan of Katie’s raffia-tied white bouquets. Marissa favored Katie’s fluffy pink peonies, and Sierra chose Towne’s bright and colorful flowers.

FAVORITE SWEET: We had Marissa hooked to Katie + Brian’s wedding as soon as we said donuts! Sierra loved Katie + Nathan’s square cake with cute bird toppers, and Emily was crazy for Claire + Brian’s beautifully undecorated cake.

FAVORITE PHOTO: Our favorite part of looking through our Real Wedding photos is finding those perfect moments caught on camera. Marissa loved Katie + Charlie’s beachfront photo, Sierra chose Katie + Clark’s mid-dock smooch, and Emily loved Claire’s excited embrace.

FAVORITE WEDDING OVERALL: When it came down to it, the Katies came out on top! Sierra chose Katie + Nathan’s garden wedding as her favorite. Emily chose Katie + Charlie’s wedding and Marissa chose Katie + Clark’s.

Which was your favorite wedding? What do you think of our picks of the month?

Here at Southern Weddings, we take pride in our collection of real Southern weddings. There are currently 60+ real weddings in our gallery collection, and we are always adding more — 2-3 a week! If you’re planning a wedding, looking for ideas, or just fascinated by gorgeous photography and color combos, you’ll soon be hooked on our galleries (that is, if you aren’t already). Because we know you’ll love them, we wanted to give them a proper introduction on the blog, and give y’all some quick tips on how to use them most effectively!

One nice feature of the galleries is that you’re able to sort them by location and color. Only want pink weddings in Louisiana? You got it! Additionally, each week, we choose a gallery of the week to highlight favorite weddings and details from our archives. Catch what the featured gallery of the week is in our weekly round-ups or at the top of the real weddings page. This week’s is Kiley + Tim’s blue and pink beach wedding from Paul Johnson. Could their pinwheels be any cuter?

Ready for a little up-close gallery tour? Katie + Charlie’s is a great example. The location and color are always at the top of the page, beneath the title. If you find a wedding you love, you can go directly to the original post to read the interview and full intro and see comments from editors and other brides by clicking “View the Original Post and tell us what you think.” To move through the photos in the gallery, click the right side of the large photo to go to the next photo, or the left side of the large photo to go to the previous photo. You can also click through using the thumbnails, the smaller photos that scroll across the bottom.

The best thing about the galleries is how easy they are to share with friends! Share your favorite galleries on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links below the gallery photos.

What are you waiting for? Get browsing, y’all!
