Weekly Round-Up

by in Main on

Happy Thursday y’all! Our round-up is coming a day earlier than usual. Southern Weddings is participating in a bloggers’ day of silence tomorrow, which means no posts will be going up. We’re all devastated by the earthquake and tsunami that hit last week, and we’d like to take the day to reflect on what happened and what we can do. The cause we are connecting with is Shelterbox — if you’d like more information on what we’re doing or on how to donate, visit the For Japan with Love site!

But on to some happier things:

Emily’s Southern Spotting put us all in a cheerful mood. How could you not smile when looking at this lovely scalloped dress? Although the line is based in Toronto, you can find the “Jaclyn” by Alyne for Rivini at some Southern shops!

Marissa’s Southern Style post made it MUCH easier to be green. Take a peek at her suggestions for maids, beaus, and brides here!

Emily tackled three different reader questions in this week’s Ask the Expert column. If you have a question about hay bales, escort cards, or homemade dinner, click here!

We had two lovely weddings on the blog this week — and two brides’ bouquets I could die for! Take a look at Engle + Brian’s bright nautical wedding here and here.

And view Kristin + Kincaid’s sunny Texas wedding here and here. I am in love with the bride’s Amsale dress and bouquet!

Before you go, take a look at these sweet engagement photos of Elaina + Dan from Set Free Photography. Elaina is a HUGE SW fan, and we had no choice but to feature a few images from her session!

Cheers to a happy weekend!

Andrea Bonelli, the woman behind the gorgeous rings, earrings, and necklaces you see below, is a self-taught metalsmith whose pieces are above all interesting. She incorporates textures and hand-crafted details into every piece of jewelry to make each truly spectacular and one-of-a-kind. On top of that, all of the gold and silver Andrea uses is recycled, and she only chooses ethically mined diamonds. If you haven’t checked out her website yet, you better get over there and check out how absolutely jaw-dropping the rest of her pieces are!

In the spirit of Andrea’s eco-friendly collection, we asked readers to share with us how they are incorporating eco-chic details into their own weddings. I was struck by how passionate y’all are about making your weddings eco-friendly! Some of the ideas you came up with blew me away! Here are a few of my favorite tips:

Jessica:” To make our wedding eco-friendly we are collecting old mason jars and vases to be used in our centerpieces. We are also using old buttons and vintage ribbon in our decor. We plan on using/reusing as many items as we possibly can :) Love your website! Thanks for the inspiration and great ideas!”

Stefanie: “One of my favorite eco friendly aspects I am including is having potted herbs as centerpieces, that double as favors! It will be beautiful, they won’t go to waste days after the wedding, and they will be so aromatic! I am also using recycled paper, and using all local vendors! By the way… love the jewelry!!”

Jess: “We’re focusing on eco-friendliness for our wedding! The ceremony’s going to be held in the woods and the reception’ll be a picnic in the park. Think quilts and blankets spread across a lawn, kites flying in the air…We’re using recycled paper for our invitations, using mis-matched china for the hor d’oevres, going minimal on the decorations and such to eliminate waste. I’m heading to a farmer’s market the day before to buy flowers for my bouquet, and am growing other flowers for decorations in a greenhouse. Can’t wait to see it all come together!”

Katie: “I used all recycled paper for my programs and kept the page number to a minimum. I hated the idea of all that paper going immediately in the garbage after the ceremony. I also didn’t have flower centerpieces. I used apothecary jars that could be reused after the wedding.”

You absolutely must check out the rest of the comments readers submitted — there are hundreds of fabulous ideas on how to make your own nuptials more eco-chic!

Congratulations to Jamie M. and Meg! You two were randomly selected as the winners of the Andrea Bonelli giveaway and will each receive a $75 gift certificate for your own environmentally friendly jewels!

Another great giveaway is on the way, so be sure to check back in!

This week we were inspired by A Bryan Photo’s beautiful image of Miss Katharine in her getaway dress as well as this Jeff Clark bride’s stunning Angelina Jolie-ish red carpet-worthy earrings. So, we thought it would be quite fetching to bring a little style to your St. Patrick’s Day. Plus, we wouldn’t want you to get pinched, now would we?

Let’s start with your bridesmaids. Your maids’ frocks are the perfect place to add that pop of color to your wedding without going overboard. Green is a great color to add to your wedding day palette, since there are about as many shades of green as you can think of! From hunter to sage, when choosing the shade that’s right for your big day consider the season, the time of day you will be tying the knot as well as the hair and skin colors of your bridesmaids. Like a few of our brides below, consider choosing the color and then having your girls choose the style of their dress. This allows each to find the most comfortable and flattering dress for her body type. Believe me, they’ll thank you!

Onto the shoes! If you are looking for a way to add color to your own wardrobe, but love the look of classic white bridal attire and accessories, shoes are the perfect item to really go all out on! They can be hidden under a long gown or paired with a short dress like the teal peep toe Valentino’s below from Millie Holloman for a more modern look. Don’t worry, we’ve got some great shoes in our shopping guide that are a little more affordable, but equally as stylish. Come on, y’all — you know this bargain shopper wouldn’t leave you hanging!

And last, but certainly not least, we have the beaus! As you know, we‘ve got a sweet spot for bow ties and what better way to “tie” in your favorite color than with your groom’s accessories. Just like green shoes can add subtle color to your attire, let the gents in your wedding party join in on the fun with socks in coordinating green shades. Quick tip: by mixing in prints, like the Lane Dittoe groom below did with the baseball bat tie from Vineyard Vines, you can tone down the brightness of a certain color as well as create a cohesive blend of all your wedding colors.

I adore the green! It’s one of my wedding colors, so I am a little biased. :)

We’re incorporating lots of green from the floral arrangements to groomsmen bow ties. I think it would be fun to a piece of green jewelry for my bridesmaids, too. The shopping guide has given me lots of inspiration.

Courtney: Im pretty sure that’s an older J Crew dress, similar to this one on the website now:

ALSO, Marissa…awesome job! green is such a beautiful color, winter spring summer or fall. You did such a good job showing it off in all seasons :)

Hi Courtney, I think Desiree is right, it looks very similar to an older version of the J. Crew dress she so kindly provided the link to. I also found a few similar options for you with that fabulous bow detail. Best of luck on your search! xo, Marissa
