I love that when Non + KG think back on their wedding day, what stands out most is how happy their friends and family were. Their sweet love story was followed by an intimate ceremony in what I can only imagine is a little piece of heaven. (Those vines! That gate! It pulls my heartstrings!) Non, looking for a comfortable yet elegant dress, went for a one-shouldered Greek-style number and complemented the gown with a green and pink bouquet. Not to be ignored, KG looked fine and handsome in his slick grey suit and shiny black shoes. These lovely photos are the work of Rensche Mari and we can’t stop staring at the details. Good thing Part II is coming up!

How did the two of you meet? (From the groom) We met at the bus stop in Johannesburg as we were coming home from work. We spoke for what seemed like forever without knowing each others’ names. I wasn’t looking for love at the time because I was nursing a broken heart and, while I believed in love, I wasn’t sure if I could survive it. Nonhlanhla got a car and needed an experienced licensed driver to ride with her and she, thank God, thought of me (I was blessed because it was winter and most importantly, because she turned out to be “the one”). Then as our story goes, we got to know each other, fell in love, and the rest is history.
Describe the proposal. He took me out for lunch at Signature Restaurant and he was acting odd. We had lunch and when dessert came, I was too busy looking at what he ordered that I didn’t even notice the ring on top my dessert. Then, he went down on one knee and told me how much he loved me and that he can’t imagine his life without me. He was so nervous during the proposal. I said yes and I noticed that half of the staff was looking at us while he was proposing. After, they congratulated us.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Beautiful, intimate, spiritual.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We really liked the table setting, especially the frozen fruit. But the one thing that sticks out for both of us is how happy our family and friends were.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I was looking for a simple and comfortable, yet beautiful dress, so I went for a Greek style dress.
Describe your wedding flowers: Nude and peach roses – they really looked stunning

Belles and beaus, I couldn’t be more excited to type this post!  Someone start the drumroll!  Break out your best boots and slice the red velvet!  Get up from your desk and get ready to tear up the pea patch!

WE JUST SENT V4 TO THE PRINTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my stars, it’s so beautiful and BIG and full of all sorts of surprises!  V4 is over 100 pages fatter than our last gorgeous issue.  I keep joking that V4 is pregnant too, but really…. I think it is.  We’re talking over a half an inch thick, friends.  It’s so fat, we’ll only be able to send one copy per envelope this time!   I think this officially takes us from the best “stocking stuffer” to the best full-on Christmas gift for your favorite person under the tree this year!

Emily, Sierra, Marissa, Nicole, Whitney and I have been hard at work here in the SW office over the last two weeks putting all the finishing touches on this issue.  It’s been a very exciting adventure!   But, even though we’re excited, the work isn’t over yet.   A little behind-the-scenes info for you…

Right now, we’re uploading the final files to the printer.  They get the files and make “color proofs” from them, which are giant sheets with several pages printed on each (about 16).  They’ll mail us these giant sheets likely on Friday, and then we get to the hard work of proofing them.  This means we check everything with a fine tooth comb to be sure all the color is perfect and everything is just right.  Even the tiniest change means we need to see another color proof, so the pressure is on!  Once we finally approve all the files, we send them off to print, likely late next week.  Printing takes about two weeks, shipping takes two weeks to go to warehouses all over the country and then to your local bookstores and then, voila!  V4 launches on October 25!  …just days before I have my first baby : )  Such an exciting time here!

We are so thrilled to share all the goodness with you in a few short weeks when Southern Weddings V4 hits newsstands nationwide.  Be sure to pre-order your copy so you get all the goodness right to your doorstep.

GIVEAWAY:  And to celebrate, I’m very excited to giveaway the first copy of V4 that comes hot-off-the-press to one very lucky reader (I’m already jealous of you!).  Just leave a comment here with your excitement and you’ll be entered to win.  YEEEHAW!!!  Time to celebrate, y’all!

As the approach of V4 comes along, it reminds me that I’ve almost been married a year. That’s crazy!!! These two, along with a talented team of South Florida vendors, imagined a shoot based around a “tropical island wedding with a twist.” We’re all about “with a twist,” here, and thought you all would enjoy the soft colors, nautical touches, and clean antique details. Enjoy the lovely images, read on for even more of the inspiration behind the shoot, and check back on Saturday for a GORGEOUS corresponding video from Cabana Pictures!

From Jessica:

“I was born and raised in South Florida and have always been in love with the natural landscape here. The greens and blues of the sea, pink and orange citrus hues, soft sandy beaches, clear blue sky – it all served as the perfect inspiration to create a tropical island wedding with a twist.

I’ve had the good fortune of shooting some beautiful Florida weddings over the past two years, but started to feel like I was seeing a lot of the same thing (there’s only so much one can do with seashells). I wanted to go beyond the expected, providing a fresh approach to “the beach wedding” and inspiring brides to think outside the box. We came up with what I think is a unique concept – an Old Florida Seaside Rendezvous – with the goal of showing brides what’s possible if you’re willing to truly take advantage of the magical backdrop this Southern coastal region has to offer.

A tiny little island just off the coast served as the backdrop for our outdoor ceremony and reception. As you look through the images, you’ll notice dozens of details that were all inspired by the location. Fresh citrus was procured from local groves (yes, I literally climbed the trees and picked it!), antiques were scoured from local shops – reflecting the true character of South Florida – like the brass keg and alligator, vintage wine casks used to transport wine on ships, barometer for the ring shot, and web-spun patio drink cart. Outdoor fabrics in classic cabana stripes brought in the feeling of an old Florida resort town. Using items native to the area, as well as inexpensive vintage items, is a great idea for any bride who is both on a budget and looking to be environmentally friendly. It also imbues the wedding with instant character.

We envisioned the guests arriving by boat, greeted at the dock with fresh oysters, “Honeymooner” cocktails, pink champagne, and sparkling key limeade. Citrus flavors and colors were repeated throughout the shoot. The ceremony took place down by the water, with a simple bamboo and fabric canopy serving as the backdrop. Guests found their table numbers via escort cards that had been strung onto vintage fishing poles, and made their way to the charming reception tables scattered with citrus and rope covered sea glass jugs. Dessert was an assortment of coconut cake, mini key lime pies, and lemon cookies, set at a table with favors inspired by a message in a bottle – with the idea that guests would repurpose the bottle at home as a bud vase. The bride wore an ethereal gown made of swiss dot fabric – sophisticated but sweet. She and her groom danced on the great lawn in front of the old Coast Guard house, with a painter standing by to memorialize the magic on canvas. They set off for their honeymoon at the end of the night on an old sailboat, capping off a picture perfect seaside wedding day.”

Hello, ladies + gents! You’ve waited patiently enough: I’m back with another wedding planning update! This time I thought I’d tell you about our ceremony and reception locations.

Contrary to popular belief, I was not the girl who had her wedding planned down to the last detail years in advance (I love weddings in general, not my wedding, specifically!). In fact, there were always just two things I knew:

1. I wanted to be married in September.
2. I wanted to be married in Connecticut.

Happily, John enjoys the month of September, as well, and he just so happens to also hail from the fine state of Connecticut.

Though it took weeks of frantic searching to find a reception venue (more on that below), our ceremony spot came together quite easily. We knew we wanted to be married in a church, and we knew we wanted our pastor from North Carolina to be able to lead the service. We ruled out both of our childhood churches fairly quickly (mine doesn’t have a center aisle, his is not the most scenic, and neither of us are that connected to the current pastors), which left one obvious answer: the Memorial Chapel at the US Coast Guard Academy in New London.

A few reasons why we love the CGA Chapel:

1. The Chapel welcomes visiting clergy, meaning there were very few obstacles to the pastor from our church in North Carolina performing the service.
2. It’s in a spot central to many of the reception locations we were considering, and only about 15 minutes away from the location we finally landed on.
3. My Dad is retired Coast Guard and taught at the Academy for 25+ years, so I have very happy memories associated with the base.
4. It is gorgeous!

Love that blue and all that gorgeous light!

With our ceremony spot secured, we put our heads back down and plowed on with the reception venue search. Ready for another list? Here’s what we were looking for:

1. A spot that was scenic, by the water, and able to be tented.
2. A venue without excessive restrictions or requirements (including but not limited to noise ordinances, lists of vendors from which you’re required to choose, and overly restrictive time schedules).
3. Somewhere that was not terribly expensive. Since we planned to tent and knew our “infrastructure” costs would not end with the site fee, we didn’t want to pay excessively for just a pretty spot of land.

WELL. I think it’s safe to say that we looked at most typical venues in southeastern Connecticut, and some atypical ones as well. Harkness, the Branford House, Jonathan Edwards Winery, Saltwater Farm, the Inn at Mystic, Florence Griswold, the Mystic Seaport, Lower Farm… oh yes, we looked at them all and then some, and came up empty, whether because of cost, space, date availability, or a combination thereof. (If you’re planning a wedding in Connecticut and are interested in all the details, you can check out the posts I wrote on my personal blog here + here.)

Yes, friends, we finally got so desperate that John literally sat down and began scrolling along the Connecticut coastline in Google Maps, calling out “Here’s a piece of lawn! Here’s a piece of lawn!” And you know what? It actually worked! One of the pieces of lawn he stumbled upon happened to be the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, and that, my dears, is where we will be holding our reception. In their Sunken Garden, to be specific. I had never once considered this venue before John found it, but now I can’t imagined celebrating anywhere else!

Pictures? Of course! Here’s the stone wall of the garden, with water view beyond:

Keep in mind that poor Connecticut suffered serious damage from Ms Irene a week or so before these photos were taken, so hopefully all these trees will have leaves next year!

Below: The view of the garden from one corner. There will be mowed grass and a tent here next September!

Next door to the garden is the porch of the Yellow House, where we might hold cocktail hour (minus the picnic tables, obvs).

Here’s the view from down below, looking back up toward the house and garden.

Stick a softly glowing Sperry tent in there and you’ll have our wedding. Maybe something like this?

So there you have it: our ceremony and reception venues! What do you think?

Tell me: Did you have a hard time finding your spots to celebrate, or was it the easiest part of the whole process?

Up next: I think maybe we should talk about my first two dress shopping trips — what do you think? They were pretty fun!

In case you missed a post…
I introduce the happy couple

All photos personal except final, which is from the Sperry website

We had too many venues that we liked so we decided to only visit 4 because it became to overwhelming. Two came out as our favorite and then by the end it was what felt more like us as a couple and where can we see ourselves saying “I Do!” and dancing all night long with our family and friends. Your venue is beautiful Emily! Congrats :)

    • avatar Emily reply

Sounds perfect, Whitney! We actually didn’t visit a single venue in person (though I had been to many of the ones we considered over the course of my life, living in the area). I’m so glad we loved our reception spot once we actually saw it in person! :)

I spotted the venue we chose online – I was out of town and sent my parents there to check it out. They called me back and said, this is your venue. I put my faith and trust in them and God, and let them sign the contract before I even saw it in person! When I saw it, I knew they were right. An art gallery in an old factory-like building in downtown Birmingham. Check out the link to see a reception there – http://www.elizabethannedesigns.com/blog/2010/03/03/real-weddings-tessa-blake/

Congrats on finding your venue! It’s definitely such an exciting time and you realize that, you’re getting married there!! CRAZY! My wedding is next November in Raleigh and the reception venue I picked happen to be because I saw Megan and Steven’s wedding on HERE at the stockroom and fell in LOVE! I wanted the Cotton Room or Bay 7 in Durham but they were a little pricey and as soon as I saw the wedding in April I emailed immediately to find out the pricing even though I wasn’t engaged yet! Luckily I got engaged on July 6th! Whew!

But as for dress shopping.. don’t get me started. It almost felt like I would never find the one… It was daunting! How do you choose one when you can barely choose what to wear in the morning?! AH! GOOD LUCK and best wishes! I’m sure you’ll be b-e-a-utiful! P.S. Nitsa’s is amazing and Alexia’s in Cary! ;)

Hi Amanda! SO glad you found the Stockroom through SW!! Megan is actually a good friend of mine, and I know she was very happy with it! Also, have heard great things about Nitsa’s and Alexia’s, and I think my Mom and I will be heading to Nitsa’s next month!

I love the Sperry tent, wow! I’ve been engaged for four months now and I’m beginning to panic over selecting a venue and finally having our date set. My fiancee and I live down in Atlanta, GA and both of our families are up in Michigan, Metro Detroit to be exact. I did go and venue hunt during the holidays, ten sites to be exact and I just feel lost. Not one captures my heart as I had hoped for. Some of the pricing was beyond our means and the other places looked very tired. I’m really leaning towards a tent as well but where to put it is the problem. I’m a bit frightened by the DIY process but it feels like that’s the only way to get exactly what you want in your venue. Am I the only one with this problem? Oh and our guest count is between 275 an 300 :) that can really make things difficult. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Lauren! I’m so sorry to hear about your venue troubles, but if it makes you feel any better, I think a lot of brides are in the same boat! If you’re interested in a nontraditional venue, I think it really helps to be planning in an area you’re very familiar with. In my experience, planning from scratch hasn’t been too difficult; you just have to be very realistic about the additional costs (lighting, generator, rentals, restrooms, tables, chairs, dance floor, etc., etc., etc.). I also thinks it’s almost a necessity to hire a planner to make sure everything is delivered, set up, and runs smoothly. I hope that helps a bit, and that you have a venue breakthrough soon!!

  10. avatar Laura Anne reply

Would you consider 4 hrs at the reception sight to be too limited? I’ve found the perfect venue, but they limit the actual event to that length of time :-/

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Laura Anne! If 4 hours only includes the reception, and not the cocktail hour or ceremony, then I think that would be enough time! If you’re trying to squeeze in both a cocktail hour AND reception, then that might be a tough squeeze.

  11. avatar Kat reply

Hi Emily!! I have loved reading all about your wedding :) I remember you wrote this post and came back to re-read because I just recently got engaged (insert a huge smile and a big YAYYY!). My fiance and I would love an outdoor reception and I adore Sperry tents. However, I’m nervous about implement weather. Are you planning your reception under the beautiful tent rain or shine? What if theres a huge thunderstorm? I know the tent will keep guest dry but I’m more worried about potential high wind or lightning. I’m a huge planner and implement weather is definitely a fear of mine. Any suggestions or wisdom you can pass on to a fellow bride-to-be?? Thanks so much :)

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Kat! Thank you so much for your kind words, and congratulations to you! We are planning to hold our reception under the tent rain or shine, which does make me a bit nervous. But one of the great things about Sperrys is that they all come with beautiful side flaps (clear on top, white on bottom), and there is a technician there throughout the reception, so if they need to come down immediately, it’s not an issue. Other than that, there’s not much we can do except pray for good weather! There will always be a certain amount of risk/uncertainty you have to accept if you’re going to use a tent, so it’s important to make sure you’re okay with that before you make the decision. Best of luck to you – I’m sure it will be beautiful either way!!

Southern Fab Finds: Rodeo Glasses

by in Contests, Main on

I think searching for the perfect bridesmaid and groomsmen gifts can be so much fun! Granted, there are times when it can be difficult to tell your best friends just how much you love and appreciate them in gift-form, but then there are other times when you find items that are exactly what you’ve been searching for. The Rodeo Cocktail glasses from Rolf Glass gave me that feeling as soon as I set my eyes upon them. Ain’t nothing more appropriate for a Southern bash than a cowboy and cowgirl cocktail!

Rolf Glass perfectly etches their designs into glassware, including monograms and patterns. We love the cowboy boot, horse, star, and cow that decorate these wares so much we’re giving you the chance to win them!

To Enter: Leave a comment below telling us all about your closet circle of cowboys and girls who will stand next to you at the altar and how they’ve made your life an adventure.

Win: A set of four Rodeo glasses from Rolf Glass!

My ladies and gents are the best family and friends a girl and her groom could ask for…they have stuck by us through thick and thin. They are always willing to lend a shoulder to cry on, even if they say “I told you so” afterwards ;-)

I truly think my fiance and I have the best group of individuals standing next to us. Our best friends have been shoulders to cry on through illnesses, deaths as well as the people we celebrate the great news and joy of life’s most exciting minutes. No matter what’s going on they lend helping hands and we can always count on them! I couldn’t imagine standing next to my future husband not having our closest friends standing behind us all the way!!!

The hicks and chicks that will be standing at the altar with my fiance, Mark, and myself are one of a kind, composed of both old and new. Two of closest people in my life, my sisters, will be standing right next to me as my matron and maid of honor. My oldest sister (Matron) is always there to run to for advice with her outlandish attitude. My other sister is someone very close to me whom I have shared a room with since we were in cribs. She is my identical twin, and has always been there through every decision. We have chosen the same college, same major (Nursing), and continue to live together. I could not imagine having someone else as close to me as her! My bridesmaid, one of the most down-to-earth chicks I know, is someone who has come into my life more recently. She is someone I can count on to be there in a flash and give me alternate advice I would have never thought of! As for the guys, the best man will be Mark’s younger brother, Eric. They share a tight bond with identical passions that they enjoy doing together. Even I have been able to create such a strong bond with Eric, who is not usually a sentimental kind of guy. Mark’s other 2 groomsmen will be two very close friends that have also come into his life more recently. Mark and the two boys have very similar aspirations, and are always there to bail one another out when needed. It is almost as if they have known one another forever! The 6 guys and gals that will be standing next to us at the altar with their boots on have been such a major part of our lives, both in the past and present. We could not fathom saying “yee-haw” to a lifelong marriage with any other cowboys and cowgirls standing nearby!

First, these glasses are adorable. My bridal party is awesome. My maid of honor is one of my closest friends from high school . . . we used to get into so much trouble together. The best man is one of the funniest people I have ever met and he is always “on” .. . always saying something crazy and funny. The other two members of our party are my brother and future sister in law. And they know more about us then anyone in the world probably . . . crazy thought.

  5. avatar Ashley Stout reply

OMg…if the contest wasn’t screaming out my name idk what else can. Our theme is very western. we both grew up in very rodeo families. My wonderful maid of honor is my amazing sister. She has been there for me through everything. My wonderful fiances sister will be up there and she is above and beyond my best friend. We have been through some crazy things whether a little intoxicated or sober as can be. My best friend mady will be up there as well. She has almost caused me to go to jail on a handful of times. We have been through so much together including her brother committing suicide seven months ago…I know she is always there for me just like i was there for her during those rough times. And the groomsmen are a handful of a story of there own.

Daddy’s baby girl of 3, so I will have my 2 sisters, my cousin, and a couple childhood friends. My best friend was killed in a terrible 4 wheeler accident, though we are having her on the program and she will be there in between the girls in spirit. They will hold wheat tied together in burlap, each piece of wheat resembles the hillarious moments we have all shared. They have made my planning process a breeze and they absolutely love parties. I have had many showers.. anywhere from Boots & Spurs shower to a Hook, Line, and Sinker shower. My handsome lover has his dad as his best man, his cousin and a few of his closet friends. They are all going to look so stunning in their cowboy boots from Corral Boots, not to mention the cute suspenders that will fit in perfectly. My fiance and his boys know how to cut a rug, I think that is whast they are most looking forward to that night. They’ve been amazing supporters throughout and always tell him how lucky he is, though I believe I am the lucky one.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE these glasses! My fiance and I are getting married in Austin, so what better fit than the capital of TX? We are incorporating my sister as my Matron of Honor, his cousin as his Best Man, and another one of his cousins as a Groomsmen – because family have been and always will be there for you no matter what. At the end of the day and throughout our lives, they have and always will our best interests at heart. My second bridesmaid is my high school best friend – despite going to different colleges and having completely different circles of friends, I always end up calling her whenever a big life change is about to occur or if I need her advice on clothing. We are practically the same person. My third bridesmaid is my college best friend – we were inseparable throughout the years and even studied abroad in Europe together, sharing our love for travel. Whenever we see each other, it feels like no time has passed. The last person in our wedding party is his groomswoman – she was the one who introduced us and his best friend in college. When I know I can’t be there for him, she can.

I couldn’t imagine surviving life without them, let alone my wedding day!

It so great the my fiance’ and I have the same friends…makes our lives so much easier! We have such great friends that would do anything for us, and in the past, they have! Those glasses are so adorable and totally match our personalities! We’re all cowboys and cowgirls at heart! Hope I win!!

My bridal party is small and comprised of only family and childhood friends which in itself says how they’ve made my life an adventure – they’ve been there through it all! My fiance’s groomsmen are his fraternity brothers, so they’ve been through the pledging process together and have continued to remain close after college. This special group of men and women mean everything to us and I know they’re going to add so many memories and joy to our special day!
