Josie Derrick has an old soul that seeps into her photography art. She has diligently worked on mastering the craft of film photography while capturing her couples with meaningful intention behind every frame. Using medium format film and a Contax 645 camera system has enabled Josie to shift her wedding photography into a fine art perspective while freeing her creative boundaries.

How I got into weddings: I second-shot my first wedding the year after I graduated college, but I didn’t fall instantly in love. It wasn’t until after I planned my own wedding that I was really hooked. Our wedding photographer was so relatable and made us feel so comfortable and taken care of. We will cherish those images forever, not just because they were beautiful, but because when I look at them, I’m reminded of how we felt on our wedding day. I want to do the same for other couples on one of the most special days of their life!
Favorite thing about weddings in the South? I love when couples include family heirlooms in their wedding day. When a bride uses her grandmother’s veil or a couple says a prayer from a family prayer book during their service, it makes my heart melt.
Favorite part of a wedding day? The vow exchange. I get a little teary seeing couples make promises that go against our nature, to build each other up and to spend their lives together. It’s always a reminder of what a blessing marriage is!
Best piece of advice you can give to brides and grooms? Take a quiet moment during the day to take it all in. There is so much planning that goes into this one special day and it goes by so quickly. Taking time to reflect and read a sweet letter from my husband away from the hustle and bustle was one of my favorite memories from my own wedding.
