Katie + Brian described their wedding as “classy Southern fun.” I love it! The daytime wedding was complete with a bright color palette. Yellow made its appearance on the couple’s invitations from Ink Parade Paperie, the bridemaids’ shoes, groomsmen’s ties (who were also bedecked in seersucker pants!) and flowers. A special twist? The florist at The Greenery who arranged Katie’s wedding flowers also arranged the flowers at her parent’s wedding! A special thanks to Bella Grace Studios who shared this sweet wedding with us!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. I spotted Brian in the biomedical library when we were both in graduate school at Vanderbilt and thought he was the cutest med student around. I figured out his name but didn’t think I’d ever meet him until one summer night at a mutual friend’s party. I caught his attention, got his number, and the rest is history!
Describe the proposal. After three years into a long distance relationship with Brian in residency in Michigan and me finishing up graduate school in Nashville, we were vacationing by driving up the coast of California. After a day of visiting wineries, Brian proposed at sunset at a bed & breakfast at Morro Bay.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Classy Southern fun.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: This is hard! We put so much time into so many of them! Probably the mason jars for Brian and the lanterns for me. Honestly though, so many of the details were a labor of love – we wrapped the bamboo utensils in napkins, assembled the lantern lights & batteries, tied ribbons on flip flops, made chalkboards, made the playlists, decorated the flower girl basket, etc. all ourselves in the evenings while watching our favorite TV shows.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I knew I didn’t want a strapless gown or a lot of bling, so this one was just perfect. It even fit without any alterations other than the bustle!
Describe your wedding flowers: The same florist who did my parents’ wedding did our wedding flowers! I fell in love with the simple bouquet of yellow mini calla lilies and other than that, just wanted yellow and ivory for the bridal party.

Good morning, lovelies! It is a good morning, indeed, seeing as I have this lovely sunrise photoshoot to share with you! I love that the talented photographers behind this shoot — Chelsi Layne and J. […] Featured | Southern Weddings Magazine We knew months ago that we wanted to do a modern vintage editorial shoot for Southern Weddings Magazine and we knew exactly who we wanted to work with…but we were unsure of the exact theme/vision of the shoot. After spending time researching and viewing different resources for inspiration we realized that we wanted to create, style, and photograph a beach bridal session.  Now, we know the whole beach theme is overdone and very repetitive…so we wanted to create our personal take on a beach portrait session. After pitching the idea to our vendors, they were immediately inspired and helped out throughout the planning of this shoot. When the vision, shoot, & post-production was complete, we could not wait to send it over to SW! We only waited about a day before we received an email from Emily @ Southern Weddings, saying she would love to feature the editorial shoot…our work paid off and we were instantly blissful, giddy and humbled. Thank you again, Southern Weddings!! Words to describe the shoot: simple, elegant, feminine, vintage, romance, light Photography: Chelsi Layne & J. Ian w/ J. Engle + Brian’s reception at the Harbourside Pavilion on Bald Head Island is yellow and blue and sunny all over! The couple’s seaside portraits from Kristin Byrum Photography are making us crave longer days (three cheers for Daylight Savings!) and warmer months. My favorite detail of this North Carolina wedding, though? The nautical masterpiece that was the couple’s wedding cake, courtesy of the talented team at Crumb de la Crumb.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: My Mom, sister and I went dress shopping over Labor Day weekend, and visited the three major bridal salons in the Charlotte area. My last stop was at J. Majors. I tried on about 15 dresses at each of the three stores. The last dress I tried on at J Majors was the one! I walked out of the dressing room and I saw my sister look over to my Mom and say, “This is definitely IT!” And so it was. One day of dress shopping and I saved the best for last!
Describe your wedding flowers: One word: STUNNING! Kim Fisher does an amazing job of getting to know her couples, and really searches for the flowers that reflect their individual style. I carried a hand-tied bouquet of creamy white David Austin garden roses and phaleonopsis orchid blossoms. And the boutonnieres were so unique: yellow billy balls and blackberries. Our guests still talk to me about our flowers!
Describe your wedding cake: I love butter cream, so I asked for plenty of it! We had three layers, and kept the top layer for our one year anniversary. The bottom and top layers were Petron-infused and the middle was Key Lime-infused.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Entering the chapel, for sure. I remember standing in the back of the church and hearing the organ pipes start playing the “Bridal Chorus.” I was so overcome with emotion. When I turned the corner, I saw Brian mouth, “Wow.” No one was in the church but me and Brian, or so it felt. Right after my Dad gave me away, Brian whispered, “You look beautiful. You are my angel.” I remember everything about our ceremony.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We look forward to officially starting our life together and making a life of our own. We purchased a home before the wedding and just started decorating the house. The next “married” task: organizing our wedding photos from the amazing Kristin Byrum Photography and hanging them on our walls! I simply cannot wait to display our wedding images.
