A planner herself (Mercy Design), it’s no surprise Tara’s wedding to her handsome Army beau was styled to perfection. The couple wed on a ranch in California and commissioned Braedon Flynn to photograph their rustic barn nuptials. The bride looked ethereal in a Romona Keveza gown and lace veil (we love Etsy treasures!), while her ‘maids rocked a more playful look in matching Anthropologie frocks. The girls carried cheery bouquets from Kim Curtis of Toast Events, and the gents looked dashing in their dress blues.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Oh my, this is a very crazy story, really. Chris and I met at a tiny high school in Bermuda Dunes, California, and fell head over high school heels for each other. Away at college we broke up, since we both had some growing up to do. I started dating a guy who Chris came to call “Sensible Shoes.” During our eight-and-a-half years apart, Chris and I separately traveled the world and lived out our dreams. Chris followed in his family’s tradition of joining the US Army. My boyfriend at the time (“Sensible Shoes”) had bought a ring and asked my parents for my their blessing, but I just couldn’t marry him. I went to counseling, prayed and prayed, and walked away before I ever got to the altar. At this time, Chris was in Iraq, a half a world away, when we began emailing daily. Things took a rapid turn from there, and the moment we saw each other and admitted our love, it was obvious we would get married. When we kissed that day, he told me he had loved me all his life.
Describe the proposal. Chris got down on one knee in front of a stunning Clyfford still painting in the modern wing of the national gallery in Washington, D.C. It was the perfect place: Chris was from the D.C. area, and it is where we would begin our new life together, and I have always loved art. He proposed with his late grandmother’s ring, some 66 years after it was first put on her finger.
Three words that describe the day are: Whimsy, love and barn.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The barns! I loved the barns. I spent MONTHS helping to restore that first barn. It was VERY special. I also adored the ring bearers and flower girls – seven in all, all my nieces and nephews – adorable!
What was Southern about your wedding? The ceremony and reception both were held at separate barns, at separate ranches. It was very rustic! Guests played bocce ball and tossed horseshoes at the reception, and horses were running outside during the ceremony. We served everything “family style,” and had salmon, steak and crispy fried onions.

I love the barn. Is this a place available for weddings? I’m looking for something exactly like this.

Hi Emily! Unfortunately, I don’t believe the barn is available to the general public for weddings. Tara worked there for many years, and I believe they let her use it for her wedding as a special favor. Sorry about that!

Ah, Erik Clausen – you must have known I would swoon over your black and whites from Linda + Jojo’s Texas wedding at the Gabrielle Gardens and Restaurant. Because I sure did swoon. Big time. Also swoon-worthy? Linda’s feminine Priscilla of Boston dress, which looks tailor-made for the bride. The b’maids looked chic and sophisticated in gray sheaths (also Priscilla of Boston). Emily would die if I didn’t mention Linda’s cheery bouquet from Blue Lotus Floral Design. Lovely, no? For more from L + J, take a peek at Poser’s post of the big day here.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met October 2008 at a pool hall. Jojo’s cousin, AJ, introduced us. At the time, he was actually dating a girl with the same name. He accidently tagged me in a facebook note instead of her. After that, we exchanged numbers, but nothing really happened except for the occasional text. It wasn’t until January during his birthday week that we ran into each other at a bar again. For weeks after, we would talk to each other through text messages from the moment we woke up until we fell asleep. The next month, we both happened to be going to Austin on the same weekend. The whole time we were there, he was chased me around the city until we were finally in the same place and we had our first kiss. We’ve been together ever since.
Describe the proposal. It was our six month anniversary and my birthday. Jojo took me to New York City to celebrate and we stayed at the W Hotel in Times Square. Our first night in the city, we came back to the hotel after dinner to change for a night out. He offered to put on my sweater and when I turned back around, he was down on one knee. I immediately started tearing up so I could barely see him. I remember him asking me if my answer was yes before he put the ring on my finger.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Emotional, cheery, and unforgettable.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: One: We loved our venue. It helped us create the feel of a small, intimate wedding even though we had over 250 guests. Two: Every aspect of our ceremony. Our faith is the most important part of our relationship. We wanted all our family and friends to feel that. Three: The flowers and arrangements, the paper lantern aisle runners, our mad libs guestbook, and photos of us, and wedding pictures of our parents and grandparents. It all helped that day become ours.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I started looking for a wedding dress a few weeks after getting engaged. I wanted to make sure that I found the PERFECT dress so I did tons of research online on cuts, materials, and designers. I think I tried on about 70 dresses. It was the last place we went to. I was with my mom, both of my sisters, and my aunt visiting from England to Bliss Bridal Salon. We tried on a few dresses and then I tried “it” on. I couldn’t stop smiling. When I came to pick it up a few weeks later, I opted to try on the dress with my eyes closed. When I opened my eyes, all I could think about was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Jojo at the other end. I couldn’t stop crying.

Ceara and Nate’s wedding continued in beautiful style under a gorgeous tent set on her family’s land. More than the lovely details, though, there’s something that sticks with me about this wedding. From Ceara: “The whole weekend is etched in our minds as a profound celebration of life and love and family. Two weeks before the wedding, my father was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer. He decided not to tell anyone outside the family before the wedding, but we all had a heightened awareness throughout the weekend that this was time out of time. And it was. My father was his exuberant self and seized the opportunity to celebrate his family and friends on land that had always been sacred to him. We are all so grateful to have the incredible photos and film of him in his element.” That, my friends, is what weddings are all about — celebrating family, life, and love. Big thanks to Christian Oth Studio for sharing this beauty with us.

The weather on our wedding day was: Beautiful, but major storms were predicted for Friday night. Our rehearsal dinner was to be outside by our pond and we had tent coverage for dinner but not cocktails. At the last minute my planner, Jung, found some tents for the cocktail area, but I made her take them down as soon as they were up – they were filthy and ruined the beautiful view! Practicalities weren’t first and foremost in my mind. Heavy winds and a purple sky portended massive storms and Jung thought I was crazy, but obliged. Much to her relief and my delight the clouds cleared just as guests arrived and it turned into a perfect evening.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: On Friday night as we gathered by our pond for drinks a baby alligator joined us, sunning himself on the bank below. During the ceremony on Saturday an eagle flew overhead as we exchanged vows. Obviously these weren’t details we had any hand in arranging, but they added to our sense that we were marrying at the right time in the right place.
Funniest moment? In retrospect it is pretty funny, and somewhat surprisingly at the time we thought so too—the ceremony began at the exact late afternoon moment the gnats descended. I had just assumed spraying would be enough, but all of our local guests could time the insects’ arrival to the minute. Throughout the ceremony Nate and I gripped hands so that we wouldn’t scratch, but our many flower girls, ring bearers, and most members of the wedding party couldn’t keep still. If you look closely at the photos, there is a halo of gnats around all of our heads. I don’t think everyone thought it was so funny—some of our guests looked like they had the chicken pox for weeks! Luckily they all said the experience was well worth the scars.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Without a doubt, logistics. The first hurdle was planning the wedding from New York during my first year of law school, but we were both happy to use the wedding as an excuse to head down to Charleston on the odd weekend. Then there was the problem of hosting 200+ people on our rural land, where the only space open enough to fit a tent was a remote field once used to land airplanes. I have to credit Jung and Josh, our wedding planners, with pulling it off—they figured out a way to bus everyone in, throw up a tent, cook dinner for 225 guests and power a 10-piece band in a field in the middle of nowhere!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There is not just one moment — the whole weekend is etched in our minds as a profound celebration of life and love and family. Two weeks before the wedding my father was diagnosed with stage four stomach cancer. He decided not to tell anyone outside the family before the wedding, but we all had a heightened awareness throughout the weekend that this was time out of time. And it was. My father was his exuberant self and seized the opportunity to celebrate his family and friends on land that had always been sacred to him. We are all so grateful to have the incredible photos and film of him in his element.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Natural, irreverent, magical.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are expecting a baby boy in July, leaving me just enough time to graduate from law school in May!
