Oh my gosh, y’all. You know reading proposal stories is one of my favorite parts about writing these posts. Bethany + Caleb did not disappoint! Imagine Bethany’s surprise when Caleb popped the question in the middle of a shoot with Jose Villa and Joy Thigpen for OnceWed! (You can see it all here and here. It’s just too sweet.) It’s no surprise that this adorable couple would have an equally adorable wedding. Their colorful invitations and programs set the scene for a whimsical wedding in Freedom Park. Bethany looked lovely in her flowing Claire Pettibone dress and butterfly pinned to her hair, while Caleb looked smashing in suspenders and a mustard yellow bow tie. The couple exchanged vows under a willow tree in front of friends and family. Big thanks to Susan Dean for sharing!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. I was sitting at the dinner table at my aunts while playing an oh-so-competitive game of Phase 10 when my aunt says, “I know someone who’s so perfect for you. He goes to Liberty, sings and plays guitar, and wants to be a youth pastor.” It was my exact list from when I was a little girl of what I wanted in a husband! I sent Caleb a friend request on Facebook with a message telling him how my aunt and uncle loved him and we proceeded to message back and forth. I worked my schedule so I could go to his church that night. I walked in, saw him and sat down in a back pew reading my Bible as if I didn’t see him. (From the groom) I saw her walk in and sit down in the back. She pretended not to notice me but I noticed her. As I walked up to her, my heart began to race. I hadn’t even said hello to her but for some reason my heart started coming out of my chest, as if I had found THE girl. We said “Hi” and went to hug each other instead of shaking hands, which I thought was pretty genuine. As I walked on stage to get things rolling, I said to my drummer, “DAG ON, that girl is CUTE.” (From the bride) That week, I fell in love with him during a walk on the beach when he told me, “All the girls in my past were just trying to be what you are. I wake up thinking of you, can’t get you off my mind throughout the day, and go to sleep dreaming of you. You are the one I want to be with for the rest of my life.” I finally understood what my mom had always told me, “When you know, you know.”
Describe the proposal. We arrive at a shoot in California with Jose Villa. Talk about torture/complete fairy tale when given a wedding dress to wear with a smokin’ hot boyfriend who you want to marry and it’s all pretend. While Joy Thigpen and the rest of the ladies went to set up the next shoot, Jose, Caleb and I stayed at this amazing field with the prettiest sunset I’ve ever seen. Jose gives me a love note to hold that I think is so precious for a prop. We then sit down as he tells Caleb to “genuinely pass the love note to her and then open it.” In my head, I thought, “There’s actually a letter on it, wonder what it says. This looks like Caleb’s handwriting. This says my name! He’s pulling something out of his pocket…Omgosh, he’s proposing!” I jumped up as he bent to his knee and said YES!!!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Cheerful, whimsical, eclectic
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: It was Claire Pettibone, couture, detailed, lace, vintage-inspired and romantic. What more to say!? I found the pre-owned dress on OnceWed.
Describe your wedding flowers: I loved peonies and my favorite flowers are billy balls so what better to do than combine them? I picked a sea foam green fabric at Hong Kong Vintage store and my bridesmaids and I put them together leaving the stems long for more of a “picked them from the wild” feel.

Really, who wouldn’t want to be a guest at Lisa + Blake’s farm wedding? With antique farm equipment, hay bales, and cows dotting the reception, this is Southern at its finest. Family and friends played corn hole on boards hand painted by Blake’s mom and were then treated to a Southern feast of barbecue, potato salad, and coleslaw. A claw foot tub full of Coca-Colas stood by to wash down the meal. I’m so impressed with Lisa + Blake’s just-decorated-enough strawberry shortcake — it’s the perfect dessert for their country wedding and I’m dying for a piece. Big thanks again to Jamie Clayton for sharing!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The homemade corn hole boards made by Blake’s mother.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We decorated the tables with burlap, lanterns, and African violets. Our meal was barbecue, potato salad, coleslaw, and, of course, sweet tea. We draped rope along the walls of the barn and hung pictures of Blake and I by clothes pins. The wedding was on a farm in the middle of the country in Lebanon, TN with donkeys in the back of the farm, and a huge cow field to the right. The ceremony was on the porch of a log cabin, with the guests sitting on old church pews. The reception was in a barn, with wagon wheel chandeliers, lots of old farm equipment, hay bales, and an old claw foot tub that was used as a beverage holder complete with glass bottles of Coca-Cola.
Describe your wedding cake: It was a three-tiered strawberry shortcake with cream cheese icing.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Finding a location was difficult because we wanted it to reflect us and our personalities, but when we finally went to the farm we knew it was perfect. Other than that, Blake and I and our family and friends spent the entire week before the wedding decorating and preparing. It was very much a DIY wedding and we were pretty exhausted by the wedding day.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our fabulous photographer!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The reveal was really great, when Blake and I saw each other for the first time. We were both so emotional and happy. My mom and bridesmaids were peeking through a window, watching during the reveal. We could hear them crying and cheering from inside.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We just bought a house in Knoxville and have been enjoying fixing it up and decorating it. Blake is in nursing school currently, and we look forward to doing travel nursing and traveling around, and hopefully out of, the country after he graduates.

Lisa + Blake’s Cedar Springs Farm wedding looks so vibrant and dramatic through Jamie Clayton’s lens. Lisa’s dark purple calla lilies stand out against her ruched Pronovias gown and play well off the yellow in her bridesmaids’ David’s Bridal frocks. I love the sweet details the couple included, like the curtain and fabric draping on the porch of the farm house and the mason jars filled with happy daisies. Lisa + Blake wanted a venue that matched their personalities and then spent the week leading up to the wedding decorating and crafting. Their genuine efforts look like a sweet Southern affair!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. My best friend, Cassie started working at Barley’s in Knoxville, a restaurant and bar. Blake was working there as well, and when I would go visit Cassie at Barleys, I kept running into Blake. We spent some time together in passing, played pool, and eventually went on our first date to a Smokies baseball game in April 2008.
Describe the proposal. Blake took me out of town one weekend to see one of our favorite comedians in Greensboro, South Carolina. On our way back, he wanted to go to the Biltmore, so we did. We went on a walk down by the duck pond there and stopped and sat under a tree by the pond. He got down on one knee and proposed – he was so nervous, and I was completely surprised! I had no idea it was coming, but all of my family and friends did. After crying, laughing, and being mostly in shock, we came back to Knoxville that night. Cassie had cooked us dinner, and my family and best friend, Chelsea had come in from out of town to surprise us. We all had dinner together. It was a great day.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Emotional, relaxing, fun!
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: The wedding dress was actually one of the first ones I tried on. My mom and I went to the White Room in Lebanon, TN, and I tried on a few dresses. The winner was a mermaid cut, oyster colored Pronovias wedding gown with lots of ruching around the middle. I think we both knew immediately that it was the one. I tried on several dresses after that, but my mind just kept coming back to that one dress. It was perfect!
Describe your wedding flowers: The bridal bouquet was simple, with dark purple calla lilies. The bridesmaids’ bouquets had both white and purple calla lilies. We also had lots of daisies, African violets, and other colorful flowers around the ceremony and reception area.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, we used traditional vows, but we both really liked the idea of having the guests participate in the vows by saying “we do” promise to support us in our marriage.
