While some good picks have been made thus far for our favorites from V3, my favorite spreads were in the Southern By Design feature, where a trio of our favorite wedding bloggers took a fresh look at our beloved Old South. One thing I’ve learned about the wedding industry? It takes a TON of collaboration and support to put together beautiful weddings (and features!). These V3 spreads show that when talented bloggers and vendors combine creative forces, something magical and inspiring can be created.

The first shoot was Southern Meets Southern California, as imagined by Jen from Green Wedding Shoes. I loved the mix of Southern and Southern California charm.

Talk about a table setting! Green tomatoes, raw cotton and magnolia flowers meet succulents, organic cotton and intricate lace, complete with an orange grove backdrop. I also loved the “Hint of Mint” bar, where guests could create a custom cocktail, and the bouquet was a definite crowd-pleaser in our office.

The second shoot was dubbed South Carolina Cool, as imagined by Emily and Joy from Once Wed. I love this shoot because of its streamlined design sense. It also used the most unique items… old engines as centerpieces and washers and nuts for napkin holders. Who would have thought this up on the regular?

The third shoot of the trio was Southern Meets Brooklyn, as imagined by the ladies of 100 Layer Cake. As a college student with many friends that recently graduated and moved to NYC, I loved seeing a shoot that imagines a couple taking the same path. You may have moved elsewhere, but you’ll always be a Southerner at heart.

Best part of this shoot? Hands down the serve-yourself biscuit bar, featuring clover honey and strawberry pepper jam. Yum! See some of our tips for putting together your own biscuit bar here!

“We like frosting.” The banner above Jeni + Nate’s dessert table (crafted by Beaches Pastry) pretty much sums up this sweeter than sweet wedding, don’t you think? The Southern Weddings gals all adored the mix and match centerpieces full of poppies put together by Shea Hopely, and are so glad Brooke Images was on hand to capture all of the pretty!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The main things were the beautiful venues, especially the reception site with the spectacular hanging moss on the trees surrounding it.
Describe your wedding cake: I preferred the homemade cake look that has been really popular lately on the wedding blogs and in the DIY scene. To me, it looked so much more appealing and appetizing than a perfect, hard, decorative cake fondant. I found a pastry chef that was amazing and she concocted the most unusual strawberry cake, made with real strawberries. It tasted as though you were biting into a strawberry. She topped it off with a variety of frostings: buttercream, strawberry buttercream, and cream cheese. There were 3 small cakes and several dozen cupcakes for variety. What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The biggest challenge was time. I’m in a Masters program for Interior Design in DC and my semester lasted from January to the middle of May. I had almost no time to plan! Critical elements came together in the last 2-3 weeks before the wedding (like finding the DJ, minister, baker, and florist!). I think this proves that anything is possible.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000 – $25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? The flowers! My florist was amazing, I could never have come close to what she did. I had a vision and I needed someone who could implement that and Shea Hopely was flawless. What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Definitely when my dad was walking me down the aisle and I was able to see all at once everything coming together, from the music and clothing to the decorations and the setting. I had so many concerns, but the whole scene was better than I had hoped and the sense of support, to have all of our friends and family in the audience, was truly a once in a lifetime experience.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? I was very inspired by the traditional nature of the royal wedding, which took place about 1 month before our wedding. The content resonated with me so much that I literally transcribed every word and used it as a starting point. It turns out that a lot of it is simply traditional vows, but it also inspired other readings and aspects of our ceremony. I particularly loved the clear explication of exactly why we get married which provides a foundation for the rest of the ceremony.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are staying in DC! I recently began working for an architect firm as a designer, and Nate is continuing his job on the Hill. We’re both enjoying married life and I’m particularly excited to design our home!

What a treat we have for you today! Brooke Images sent us this colorful Florida wedding, and it’s everything you’d want a beach celebration to be, and more. Jeni + Nate wowed us with gray striped bridesmaid dresses for the ladies and sharp khaki suits for the gents, and the pink, blue and gold ribbons waving in the breeze at their beach-side ceremony were the icing on the cake. Check back for their equally-colorful reception soon!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Nate and I met in 2002 as part of a small group of new transfer students at Principia College. We immediately became good friends and enjoyed hanging out with our group of mutual friends over the course of that fall quarter. I ended up transferring back to a different school the following quarter, several thousand miles away, but we very loosely kept in touch over the next seven years. During that time, we both graduated and moved to opposite coasts (myself in California and Nate in DC). Eventually, I fulfilled a lifelong dream of moving to Florida. Coincidentally, Nate and I both happened to also be single at this point and now living within 700 miles of each other, so we made an excuse to meet up. We hit it off right away, and within a few months, I decided to relocate to DC to be closer to Nate and to pursue a Master’s degree in Interior Design at George Washington University while he continued his job on Capitol Hill.
Describe the proposal. After a year and a half of dating, Nate proposed to me on a foggy winter evening on the back steps of the Capitol, overlooking the National Mall and Christmas tree!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Whimsical, surreal, perfection.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The balloons! They set a perfectly joyous and playful tone.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I wanted something simple with almost no embellishment, where the design itself could stand on its own and make a statement. With only a six-month engagement, I was already behind before I even started my dress search. After trying on 100 dresses in my desired price range, I began trying on dresses outside of my price range. Suddenly, I had no problem finding dresses I loved. It just so happened that every one of these dresses was designed by Amsale. Knowing that I’d be happy with essentially any dress by Amsale, I started scouring used wedding dress websites. With almost no time left (certainly no time to order without rush fees), I made a lower offer to one seller and she graciously came down on her price.
Describe your wedding flowers: Trying to find designers/florists who understood and could execute my vision was a bit challenging. Two weeks before the wedding (yes, two!), I finally found the most amazing florist who was miraculously available and completely understood the soft, whimsical, and eclectic look that I wanted. Being on a budget, I looked at ways I could reduce my floral costs. I had an epiphany one morning to have the bridesmaids and groomsmen carry 36-inch round balloons down the aisle instead of bouquets, which so perfectly supported the feel that I was going for with the ceremony. For the reception, the flowers consisted of peonies, dahlias, garden roses, and hydrangeas in ivories, pinks, peaches, and coral, situated in an eclectic array of glass and milk glass vases and wooden boxes with painted stripes.

Particularly if your guests will be more spread out or there are a large number of them, consider using microphones for your officiant and any important speakers. 9. Provide shade. Beaches rarely have much natural shade, and even on the mildest day, some of your older guests may not be able to sit in the sun for long. Parasols or sun hats at your ceremony can help, but be sure to designate a shady spot where people can sit if they really need to. […]
