There must be something about the South and its food, because many of our escort card submissions involved mouthwatering treats! Allison Barnhill Designs opted to feature a sweet Southern dessert — pie! — and Elizabeth Ryan Photography captured the concept to perfection. I love the mini versions Relysh Catering created, and know guests would, too.

From Allison:

“I always have this image that pops into my head when I think of the South…my perfect Southern moment. I’m sitting in a rocking chair on a large wrap-around porch, tucked under an old quilt, reading a book, when my grandma comes out and hands me a piece of homemade pie. Throw in a glass of sweet tea in a mason jar and I’m in heaven (or sugar shock…whichever comes first!).

So, for this Ultimate Southern Escort Card Challenge, I used this “moment” as my inspiration. For the pie, I decided to go with a whimsical idea…mini pies on sticks…pie pops! Then, I picked out fabrics that reminded me of a handmade quilt. I used those fabrics to make fabric buttons that I attached to escort cards that were simple light yellow cardstock with rounded corners and rustic olive green fonts. I tied them to the pie pops with raffia bows. Adorable and yummy!

The escort card display is rustic and fun. It is filled with books, mason jars, bright wildflowers and even handmade flowers using book pages! I used the same material as used for the buttons to make a matching fabric banner to adorn the perfectly rustic table. Now, pop to your sweet seat, y’all!”

Thank you so much, ladies! Readers, if you love this idea, be sure to let us know in the comments! And remember, you’re welcome to give a vote of support to more than one concept.

P.S. Allison was so kind to include a PDF tutorial for the buttons and paper flowers she crafted. Click here

I am LOVING our Southern escort card challenge so far, aren’t you? Up next we have a super-creative entry dreamed up by Sarah of daisies & pearls and photographed by Meredith Perdue. I love that they used something so Southern — so Carolina, in fact — but also unexpected. These escort cards would be sure to get your party moving!

From Sarah:

“What is a Southern fete without Carolina Beach Music? This series of escort cards celebrates the music of yesteryear and the famous Carolina Shag. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s Dance Diagrams, the basic Shag step is broken down for both male and female guests. The titles of Carolina Beach songs take the place of traditional table numbers. Perhaps the actual song albums could designate each table in an entire design scheme. The escort cards are hand drawn on cotton card stock using a graphite transfer technique. They are befittingly arranged on the quintessential Southern house shutter.”

  8. avatar Erin Lynch reply

Being from New England I had no idea that the shag was an actual dance! Shag has always been one of my favorite movies. I love that Sarah incorporated something so fun, retro and something all party guests could enjoy. This one is my favorite!

The next finalist in our Ultimate Southern Escort Card Challenge is the fine folks at Beeology. They teamed up with photographer Jill Higgins to put together another delicious-sounding escort card idea. In their words, they are “totally Southern and sweet as honey.”

From the Beeology team:

“Wedding guests pick up their escort cards along with a tube of tasting honey from Beeology101. Once seated at their table, they get to taste the honey. Beeology101’s tasting tubes are labeled with batch numbers that can be looked up online to find information about the honey, the beekeeper who produced it, and other fun details. The tasting tubes were simply inserted into chicken wire so that they were standing upright.”

Thank you so much Brian and Jill! Readers, if you love this idea, be sure to let us know in the comments! And remember, you’re welcome to give a vote of support to more than one concept.
