Bonnie + Armon wanted to create a wedding day that was a reflection of who they are and a celebration of their new life together. To them, that meant an evening of fun, food and fellowship with their favorite people that have walked through life with them. I think their sweet Texas nuptials encompassed all that and more! Big hugs to the equally as sweet Caroline Joy for sharing B + A’s big day!

P.S. Be sure to check out their proposal story from the groom’s perspective – it made my heart melt. Especially since I married my college sweetheart as well!

I love how Bonnie honored her grandmother by attaching a pair of her pearl earrings her bouquet.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Yes. We wanted to savor every bit of this celebration, and a first look was the perfect way to steal a quiet moment together before the merriment commenced.

When it came to my dress, I knew exactly what I wanted – all lace, sweetheart neckline, strapless and classic. My maid of honor and a friend went with me to try on dresses but after trying on six, I wasn’t wowed. The third dress I had tried on had three out of my four criteria, but it had delicate lace cap sleeves. The consultant put me back in that dress, tucked the sleeves into the bodice and turned me around to see the result. I fell in love! After a few rounds of alterations, I truly felt like my dress was a custom creation.

We did not write our own vows. We loved the idea of saying the same vows our parents and loved ones exchanged at their weddings in years past.

Describe your wedding flowers: Although I didn’t have a clear vision of what our wedding flowers should look like, I knew I wanted something simple and Southern and Lindy absolutely shared my vision. Our centerpieces were a mix of sweet blush blooms in vintage milk glass vases. My bridesmaids carried full bouquets of white hydrangea and garden roses to complement their blush dresses. My bouquet was a dreamy mix of blush peonies and white garden roses – I didn’t want to put it down!

We worked to recreate our most beloved parts of Southern culture – from homemade treats to mason jars to fellowship – in every facet of our celebration! Guests were relieved from the July heat by individual sandalwood fans during the ceremony. We had no shortage of striped straws, mason jars, lemonade or lawn games! My wonderful mother-in-law made all the pies for our pie bar, while my mom and aunt made the cheesecake bites. A family friend baked the raspberry brownies and Armon and his best man constructed the lawn game sign I painted. Sharing every little DIY project with my bridesmaids and mom really helped me savor the journey leading up to our wedding, rather than focusing on a one-day event.

I could eat sweets all day long, so we knew we wanted more than just traditional wedding cake. Armon is decidedly anti-cake so in lieu of a groom’s cake, we added a pie bar, cheesecake bites and raspberry brownies for variety. We did have a beautiful two-tier confection with a bottom layer of vanilla cake and pineapple filling, as well as classic red velvet on top. Our baker whipped up a cream cheese and vanilla buttercream to complement both flavors. We loved it!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. (From the groom) Bonnie and I both went to Baylor University. While we had all the same mutual friends, our paths didn’t cross until we were at a dinner function at a Lebanese restaurant for our honors program. This particular venue had a belly dancer performing and, after the dancer tried unsuccessfully to coerce Bonnie into joining her on the dance floor, she turned to me. As this pretty girl had just refused her, I was happy to oblige and promptly made a fool of myself in front of what would one day be my bride. We wound up having the same course schedule the following semester and became the most intimate of friends. Three years later I’m delighted to call her my wife.
Describe the proposal. (From the groom) I proposed to Bonnie in Waco, where we met and where so much of our relationship blossomed. I got Bonnie’s roommate and best friend Sara in on the surprise. After we arrived, Sara whisked Bonnie off for an afternoon of playing and pampering. I took that time to set out a surprise in her apartment consisting of her favorite dress and a telltale note that this evening would be one to remember. The girls returned to their apartment, and I’m told that Bonnie was overjoyed with my surprise. After getting ready and getting to spend some time with her roommate, Bonnie finally arrived. I then took her on an adventure through our past, taking her to all of the many places on Baylor’s campus and in Waco that were significant to us. After our tour ended back at Baylor, we made our way toward the gardens outside Pat Neff and Old Main, the campus’s two main buildings. As we walked through the gardens in the direction of my old dormitory, I spoke to Bonnie about all of the times we had crossed through this place without ever thinking what may one day happen here. We never made it to my old dormitory because in the middle of the gardens, with our old university’s iconic buildings in the background, I informed my bride that this was the end of the tour — the place where she was asked to be my wife. I got down on one knee at twilight and proposed to her.
In what month did you get married? July
How many guests attended your wedding? 62.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. A sweet friend of mine from high school played his guitar at our ceremony and did beautiful instrumentals of each song we chose. Our processional was “The Scientist” by Coldplay and I walked down the aisle to “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley. Armon and I walked back down the aisle to “You and I” by Ingrid Michaelson.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Armon and I are no strangers to long distance, as we have primarily been in different locations for most of our relationship. Our engagement was no exception as his enlistment with the Air Force stationed him in California for the year. Thankfully, we were able to tour our venue together following our proposal, but the rest of the details were up to me. Although it was a bit of a challenge, it turned into a hidden blessing as I got to spend our wedding meetings and tastings with my maid of honor!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Although it’s impossible to single out one ultimate moment, I can narrow it down to a few. My big brother officiated our ceremony and walking down the aisle on my daddy’s arm with my brother and groom waiting at the end for me was so overwhelming. Exchanging our vows while surrounded by the people closest to me was such a humbling moment. There was so much love and joy encircling us on that day!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are soaking in this new season as newlyweds and are having a blast setting up our home together! We’re looking forward to exploring the West Coast together in the months to come.

Y’all I just want to hug Millie Holloman for sending over such an adorable wedding! Sigrid + Bart dreamed up a pink wedding full of fun details, all of which were beautifully shot by Rachel Barker of MHP. (I think the Southern Weddings office needs one of those polka dot balloons, don’t you?) I love that S + B’s wedding was the collective effort of her family. From building the dance floor to baking the cakes, each detail was handcrafted with love and looks spectacular at the bride’s family’s home, where Sigrid + Bart exchanged vows and then partied ’til the cows came home.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I had been wedding dress shopping a few times and was going to a sample sale at Priscilla of Boston in Coral Gables, hoping to find the dress for a deal. I couldn’t help but try on the regular priced dresses, and of course, the only dress I could imagine myself wearing was hanging right there on the rack. Once I put it on, I was done! We went back the next day with my dad, my aunt, my sisters and my grandmother’s belt to order my dress and the bridesmaids’ dresses.
Describe your wedding flowers: My uncle did floral design for a long time and he ordered and created all of the flowers we used at our wedding. I wanted flowers that reminded me of my mom’s garden growing up. They were so beautiful, with big, fat pink peonies and garden roses. The peonies were flown in from Israel because they weren’t in season. I really loved Bart’s boutonnière, a simple pink garden rose with dusty miller.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Our dear friend wrote and performed our ceremony, so it was very personal and sweet.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? After we were pronounced husband and wife, we kissed and “Love Train” started blaring. We led everyone over to the reception area with our big balloons. That moment was pure happiness.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding was a testament to the collective talents of our family. Everything about our wedding was homespun. Every decoration was made or painted by hand by someone in my family. My dad, uncles, brothers-in-law and cousins built and painted the dance floor, did all the lighting and built the bar. My uncle did all the flowers and my mom’s cousin made the arrangement on the gazebo we were married under. Almost every single thing was cooked, baked, crafted, painted, built, and set up by a family member. My great aunt made the sausage bread we served at the cocktail hour, my mom’s cousin painted the chair hangings and the chalk boards, and my cousin painted the lids that of the mason jars we used for our signature drink. My aunt had been collecting vintage china and silverware for a year for her vision of the table, where we also used my mom’s collection of pretty vintage linens. There were touches of burlap and gingham to shout out to Bart’s country roots, combined with so many vintage details that my mom would have loved.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: My cousin, Mary has her own baking business in Rhode Island, and she came down early to bake all of our desserts. There were three cakes, each one more beautiful and delicious than the last. Our flavors were chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream, vanilla with fresh strawberries and whipped icing and coconut lemon cupcakes. Goodness, they were so delicious my mouth is watering remembering them! My cousin, Missy, made the silhouette cake toppers.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Bart came into my life when I felt like nothing good could ever happen again. My mom had been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer about six months before, and things were getting really hard. Bart came around and somehow started to make life seem more livable. He has since brightened my life in so many ways, and helped me get through some unbearable darkness. I feel pretty lucky to be married to a man who, even on his worst days, is too good to be true.
Describe the proposal. Bart came to my work to bring me lunch and casually said I should start looking at plane tickets to go home. (We were living in San Diego at the time.) I was kind of confused and turned around to ask him what the heck he was talking about and found him on one knee with a gorgeous ring. He said, “Well you are probably going to want to get home to your family to start planning our wedding.”
In what month did you get married? February.
How many guests attended your wedding? 100
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Oh my, every detail was our favorite — the giant polka dot balloons, the chandelier in the tree, Bart’s boots, the roses on the dance floor, the “bartinis,” the mismatched china, the Italian string lights, the ice cream truck!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Hands down, THE PHOTOGRAPHER.

Melanie + Cale are just full of good ideas that made their big day even more special. Dress shopping with mom was one-upped by Melanie’s talented mama who crocheted her entire dress based off a design that they both came up with. The result is not only one-of-a-kind, but perfectly detailed and gorgeous. This is the first time we’ve seen a ceremony set up like M +C’s. They sat hay bales in a spiral formation so that the bride would be able to pass by each guest on her way to the altar (LOVE!). Aside from the sweet touches, this wedding is just beautiful. You would never even guess that flowers were sourced and assembled at the very last minute! (Yikes! Read more on that below.) We’re dishin’ out big hugs to The Reason who shared M + C’s day with us.

I knew I wanted a different sort of dress. My mother happens to be very talented at crocheting, among other things. When I brought up the idea of a crocheted wedding dress, we began looking for patterns. We found our inspiration in a 1960s Vogue Crochet magazine. From that, she and I began to design a dress for my perfect day. The dress took countless hours and about eight months to finish. It was exciting and scary not knowing exactly how the dress would turn out, since neither of us had seen a crocheted wedding dress in person, not to mention this one was our personal design. When I put on the dress for the final time, about a week before the wedding, I said “yes” to the dress! I never once doubted it would be perfect, I never even tried on one single wedding dress but that one. My sister designed the sash after I showed her several pictures of inspiration. My mother also crocheted seed pearls into the top part of my dress for an extra Southern touch. I am confident in saying I had the most perfect wedding dress!

Describe your wedding flowers: We actually had a wedding flower dilemma at first. I had my flowers grown for me in a local greenhouse, but due to an unusually mild winter, they bloomed entirely too early and a week before the wedding, I did not have any flowers. A family friend (and retired florist) who putting the flowers together for me began to search online wholesale sites and we were able to get in a few Helga piaget roses, mini peach carnations, peonies, and an assortment of white flowers that included lilies, snap dragons, and anomies, and much more. We just ordered an array of flowers within budget and mixed them with borrowed greenery from a local nursery and grapevine we cut and dried. This was one mistake that turned into beautiful bliss!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Yes. We always said we wouldn’t, but when looking at our timeline for the day, we thought it would be best for photos. It turns out to be one of the best decisions we made. That moment of just the two of us seeing each other and getting to appreciate the look on Cale’s face was priceless. The love we both felt at that very moment was overwhelming.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We did not do any readings, but we did add a unique touch to the ceremony by watering a “unity” tree. Cale and I picked out a tree together that we would take and plant at our new home. To us, the tree symbolized our new growth together. The tree also reflected the work of marriage to both of us. We even picked a fruit tree because we wanted that to symbolize a “fruitful” marriage, and we know fruit trees require more attention. The tree also fit nicely with the overall theme of our wedding.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. We both envisioned just having an acoustic guitar for our ceremony, so we asked one of our dear and talented friends to play all of the songs during our ceremony. He played “Marry Me” by Train as the wedding party walked in. I walked down the aisle to “1000 Years” by Christina Perri. Walking back up the aisle was my favorite. I had our musician learn “She Said Yes” by Mumford & Sons. Our first dance was to “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton, which was also our real first dance when we first became a couple. The daddy-daughter dance was to Willie Nelson’s “Angles Flying to Close to the Ground”, and the mother-son dance was to “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: I think having our loved ones surrounding us in the spiral hay bale formation during our ceremony was the most special. Being able to walk by every person and smile at them both going down and coming back up the aisle was extremely warming.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The first look! Seeing Cale see me for the first time made my heart drop. There are no words to express the feelings we both had when we saw each other.

I think the most Southern part of our wedding was that it was truly was a family feat. We all enjoyed catching up and visiting, even though we were doing physical labor. My uncle and his son did all the electrical work and hanging of lights. Everyone tossed hay bales. We scrubbed, set up the flatbed tailor as our stage, and moved furniture, but most of all, we just enjoyed being family. Cale and I both grew up on farms, so our Southern roots run deep. The hay bales we sat on were baled right on our farm, our centerpieces on our guest tables included drift wood and sand from my family’s sandbar on the Altamaha River, where we were married. One of our party favors was a mason jar for the guest to drink out of for the evening. Our cocktail hour included mint luleps in honor of the Kentucky Derby and pink lemonade margaritas in honor of a Southern Cinco de Mayo. Our “Best Day Ever” Banner was made with burlap. We let both our bridesmaids and groomsmen wear their favorite pair of Southern boots — Cale and I even wore ours!

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Enjoy it, have fun, and be yourself. Our wedding was so great because we incorporated who we were into every element. We enjoy humor and have a passion for Southern hospitality. We wanted our guests to leave feeling like they had spent good time with Cale and me, all the while enjoying good food, company, and drinks. We pictured our wedding as a place to relax, celebrate and sit in fine company.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: Cale does not care for cake, and I love it!! We decided to go with a small traditional wedding cake of pound cake and buttercream icing and then a variety of other Southern cakes iced in white. Our cake designer produced key lime, double chocolate, raspberry swirl, and coconut cakes. We made most of our cake stands out of vintage plates and candle sticks that our grandparents collected for us when they went antiquing.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We literally grew up on opposite sides of the railroad tracks, about 10 miles from one another, in a small town in Georgia called Odum. We both graduated from the University of Georgia in 2009; Cale with his degree in Accounting, and myself with a degree in Nutrition Science. Cale stayed in Athens to obtain a Masters in Accounting and I went to Miami, FL to attend Barry University to obtain my Masters in Biomedical Sciences. In July of 2010, I returned back to Athens to stay with my sister for the summer months. Cale was in Atlanta doing an internship at Price Water House Coopers and saw that I was in Athens and contacted me over Facebook, suggesting we catch up. We got together for dinner one night and it was then that I noticed something was different. I just couldn’t put my finger on exactly what. We joked, had good conversation and caught up like old friends. I can remember running into him at a red light on the way back home from dinner where he rolled down his window and said that if we both were not married by thirty, we would just marry each other. I laughed, agreed and drove off. Throughout that month, we hung out a few more times. Then one day it just clicked.
Describe the proposal. Cale set up a way for me to spend the entire day “family centered,” without me noticing. I went and got my nails done with my sister, then spent the day by the pool with my mother, sisters and friends. That evening, I knew I was going to meet Cale’s grandparents for the first time and Cale promised me a fun date after they had visited. I began to get suspicious when Cale did not turn to go into the city of Jesup for dinner, instead driving toward my house in Odum. He took me out to my favorite spot on my grandfather’s farm and had packed a picnic. At the picnic, Cale began to tell me how special I was to him, and he was acting very nervous. He told me he had another surprise for me and went to the truck to get something. He asked me to stand up and close my eyes and then placed a wrapped present in my hands and told me to open it. I was ecstatic to unwrap a Bible that read, “Melanie and Cale Harris.” Cale got down on one knee and asked me if I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, at the same time, unveiling a beautiful rusty nail bent into the shape of a ring. (I always joked with Cale that the type of engagement ring I wanted was just an old rusty nail.) He then revealed the “real” engagement ring, a beautiful blue sapphire, and I said YES! Cale had both family and friends waiting down at the family River house for dinner and celebration.

What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Using The Reason as our photographers. Their raw talent for capturing all the right moments of a wedding day is priceless. At the end of the day, when everything is said and done, all you have left are photos and a video. I can say the way they documented our wedding was more than perfect.
What’s next for you as a couple? We just recently relocated from Atlanta, Georgia back to our hometown in South Georgia. Cale will be running a local accounting firm, and I will maintain my position as the Nutritional Coordinator for the Georgia Department of Agriculture. We are excited to begin our new lives together surrounded by our families in a town we hold so dear. We just recently bought a charming older home, and are looking forward to making it our own We are you looking forward to deep roots and new beginnings! Above all the wedding stuff, we are best friends, and we are just excited to see what path the Lord will lead us on as a couple.
