One thing we love most about the South, and Southern weddings in particular, is that accompanying a love for tradition is an equally strong love for being true to ourselves. Today’s lovely couple, Megan and Aaron, are a perfect example of this. Planning a wedding in six months, walking down the aisle to bluegrass music, and playing lawn games in October, for example, are all things that many people might consider “against the rules” when it comes to weddings, but as Megan realized, there really aren’t any rules! As a result, their wedding was full of moments and details that truly meant something to them.

We’re so inspired by Megan and Aaron–thanks to Chris Isham for sharing their wedding with us!

We had talked about getting married for quite awhile, but the night we got engaged was a complete surprise. Two of my friends from Nashville were in town for the weekend. Aaron found out the ring was ready on Friday, and after talking with the girls, he made a plan to ask me that same night. For the entire night, the girls were stalling me, but I had no idea–he apparently kept texting them to say he needed more time. After a leisurely stroll through the park, a concert, and a tour of my place, we finally arrived at Aaron’s house. His car wasn’t there, so I assumed he wasn’t home. After some coaxing to get me into the kitchen, I turned the corner to see him standing in the dark with candles lit, tons of flowers, and the cutest handmade sign ever. I was in complete shock, but of course, I said yes!

I knew I wanted a very neutral color scheme for the wedding overall, but I also wanted to have a few subtle hints of fall. My flowers were mostly white and blush with green accents and hints of rust and dark brown. I don’t know a ton about flowers, but I told the florist what I was looking for, and they completely nailed it!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My old and blue was one and the same. Within the last few years, I lost my grandparents. They were the sweetest couple and I really admired their marriage. My grandfather served in the Vietnam War, and while he was away, he sent my grandmother a sweet pillow cover that said, “Sweetheart- Until we meet again, sweet thoughts to you I send, may all my blessings be with you, Your sweetheart always true.” I had my seamstress cut this part of the pillow cover and sew it into the bottom of my dress. It was a way to have them as part of the wedding even though they weren’t physically there. My something new was my dress and jewelry. For my something borrowed, one of my maids of honor took part of the leftover material from her bridesmaid dress after she had it altered and incorporated it into a garter for me.

We hired a bluegrass band to play at our reception and a few songs for the ceremony. Instead of going with traditional wedding songs, the wedding party and I walked down the aisle to some fun, upbeat, traditional bluegrass songs. It fit perfectly with the setting and casual atmosphere I wanted for the wedding.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We chose to say the traditional vows that our pastor provided us with, but there was a line in them that I hadn’t heard before. It said, “I pledge to never stop learning to be your husband/wife.” It was my favorite line because it’s so true that marriage is a learning process. Neither of us is going to be perfect all the time. The goal is to learn how to be a better wife/husband throughout this journey.

The biggest challenge for me in the whole wedding planning process was trying to find a venue. We got engaged in April and we wanted to get married by November. Since most brides plan their weddings at least a year out, I had a hard time finding availability. I stumbled upon a venue in Asheville called Yesterday Spaces and absolutely fell in love, but they only had Sundays available. After talking it over with Aaron and my family, we decided we could make it work if we had the wedding earlier in the day. Once the venue was locked in, wedding planning was smooth sailing from there on out.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding had a very Southern feel. The setting was on a farm and the ceremony was outside. At the reception, we opted for a buffet-style dinner with lots of yummy food, including a good ol’ Southern side of mac and cheese, and of course, sweet tea!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. I went with a small, simple, white, round cake with ombre ruffles, and then had a variety of cupcakes with mini ruffles. Aaron isn’t a big dessert person, but he does love apple pie, so instead of a groom’s cake, we also had mini apple, pecan, and pumpkin pies. The desserts were displayed on white porcelain stands and slices of tree to give the dessert table the rustic and elegant look I was going for.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? You don’t have to go with tradition or do what everyone else does. In some aspects of our wedding, I felt like I needed to do the “traditional” things, but some of them just didn’t feel like us. After someone told me I didn’t HAVE to do anything, I quit stressing about the things I felt like I should do, and just went with things that we liked.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. In the summer of 2011, I was encouraged to try online dating by a friend’s sister. I brushed it off, but later mentioned it to my roommate. After being “dared” and curiosity getting the best of me, I took the plunge and joined an online dating site for one month. Luckily, Aaron was encouraged by a few friends to give it a try as well and joined at the same time I did. Three months after communicating, we met up in Greenville for a brief coffee date, and then two months later, we had our first official date in Nashville. We dated long distance for almost a year before I moved to Greenville, and we got engaged a few months after I moved down.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I went home to Nashville to go dress shopping with my mom over Memorial Day weekend. I knew if I didn’t find a dress that weekend, I would most likely have to shop without my mom, so I was determined to find something. I found my dress at the second store we went to and I fell in love with it immediately. We already had an appointment set up at another store afterwards, so I went to take a look at some other options, just in case. The whole time I was there, I kept thinking about the other dress, so we rushed back to go get it!
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did do a first look. Aaron was hesitant, but I wanted to be able to hug, kiss, and talk to him the first time I saw him that day. I’m so glad we did. The rest of the day flew by, so it was nice to share a few moments alone before all the craziness of the day started.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The caterer created “His” and “Hers” signature drink to serve. Aaron likes ginger, so his was a blackberry ginger lemonade. I love fruity drinks, so mine was a sparkling strawberry, pineapple, and kiwi cocktail.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? I can honestly say I was thrilled with all my vendors. Every one of them was amazing to work with, and they truly wanted to make our wedding day wonderful. The day went off without a hitch because of their hard work, which made for a fun and stress-free day.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Taking communion together as a couple during our ceremony is something that stands out from our wedding day. A friend of mine played a song we love on her guitar while the pastor prayed over us, and we had communion privately. It was just a special moment between the two of us.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Aaron and I are in the process of looking for and buying a house. I can’t wait to get settled into our first home together, start lots of traditions, and make lots of memories as a family.

The neutral color scheme of Megan and Aaron’s wedding sits beautifully against the backdrop of the autumn landscape. I really like their food selections, especially the s’more station and mac & cheese -such fun details! The idea of taking communion together as a couple is so special, too. That is something I would love to incorporate into my own wedding someday.

2014 means a whole new year of beautiful, oh-so-Southern couples, love stories, and weddings on the Southern Weddings blog, and I can’t think of a more perfect kickoff than the lovely Alix and Jon. These College of Charleston sweethearts were married at RiverOaks Charleston–the perfect setting for their romantic, vintage-inspired wedding (and one of our beloved Blue Ribbon Vendors!). I love Alix’s amazing boho bridal style and the dreamy RiverOaks views, but the thing that really stopped me in my tracks was reading that their officiant, Alix’s uncle, also officiated her parents’ wedding. I can’t even fathom how deeply meaningful this must have felt to their entire family!

Thank you kindly to Clay Austin for sharing Alix and Jon’s wedding with us!

After dating for three years, Jon proposed on July 15, 2012. It was a Monday and I awoke at my parents’ house at 6:30 a.m. to find Charlie, our dog, bounding into my room. Disoriented, I could not figure out why Charlie was there, since I had not taken him with me the night before. Upon further examination, I noticed that Charlie had a red bow tied to his collar with a note reading “Follow the Arrows.” Outside my door, I found arrows leading me downstairs. On the way, I found a picture of Carrie, who first introduced us, a picture of the movie Waiting, commemorating the first night we met, a picture of a staircase, commemorating the night I fell down the stairs after our movie date, and other pictures encapsulating the relationship we had built over the last three years. The arrows led oddly to my parents’ laundry room. When I went in, there was a last note reading, “Just Kidding, Turn Around,” and in the living room across from me, Jon was on his knee holding a ring. Needless to say, I said “yes!”

Describe your wedding flowers. Gorgeous. They were all designed by Jennigray Hewitt of RiverOaks. She ordered them from California and incorporated RiverOaks’ own English Garden Roses from the property. The entire color palette for the wedding was very simple and neutral, so the flowers were really the only pops of color. Jennigray outdid herself by creating bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces, and ceremony decor from peach, cream, and pale pink garden roses, with pops of deep burgundy flowers and succulents. All of her arrangements were stunning.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? No first look for us. We wanted seeing each other to be more of a surprise, and thought waiting until that moment when I came down the aisle made it more significant.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did not write our own vows. The officiant, my uncle Dave Collings, is the pastor of Christ Church Cleveland (Ohio), so he was able to personalize our vows for us. It was very special to have him do that for us. He also married my parents, which made it even more sentimental. He did an amazing job of keeping all of our guests comfortable, and making the ceremony light-hearted, sweet, and intimate.

RiverOaks was such a unique venue and Marianne literally runs the venue out of her home (true Southern hospitality). It is the perfect Lowcountry setting, located on the Wando River out in Awendaw, with its gorgeous oak trees and Spanish moss. All of our vendors were unbelievable and great to work with, but the creme de la creme was a two-way tie between our amazing photographer, Clay Austin, assisted by his wife, Kate Austin, and all of the wonderful women (Marianne Caldwell, Laura Heuber, and Jennigray Hewitt) at RiverOaks Charleston.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: It really is difficult to pick just one thing. The RiverOaks staff ensured every detail of the wedding went off without a hitch, and they even surprised us by sending us off in style with a fireworks display. Our guests all loved the music and the cigars we provided for guests to smoke by the river, which RiverOaks coined “Puff by the Pluff.” Being with all of our friends and family made the night perfect. By the end of it, we also felt that the vendors became part of our friends and family.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We had a three-layer wedding cake from Publix. The base was white cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese icing, the middle was chocolate/vanilla marble cake, and the top tier was strawberry. We also served pies late in the evening from Sugar Bakeshop in Charleston. We included an array of fall-themed flavors: chocolate coffee caramel, pecan, chocolate pecan, pumpkin, sweet potato, and apple.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We first saw each other on August 22, 2006. It was our first day of classes as freshmen at College of Charleston. We waited across the hall from each other for our respective lab instructors to show up, though unbeknownst to us, labs were not starting until the following week. I noticed Jon’s Flogging Molly t-shirt (which he still wears today) and we struck up a brief conversation about our mutual interest in the band. I had, more or less, rolled out of bed to get to lab, and was wearing bright red sweatpants and a less than flattering t-shirt. Regardless, after this brief encounter with a Charleston girl, Jon remembers thinking, “I think I am really going to like college.” Fast forward to 2009, my dear friend Carrie met Jon in a drama class. Eventually, Carrie brought to Jon’s attention that he was both tall and Greek, and she had a girlfriend who was also tall and Greek, so the two of us should meet. At a small gathering of friends at my house, Carrie brought Jon over and we bonded over beer and the thought-provoking Ryan Reynolds classic, Waiting.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I found my dress at J. Crew. Even though I have always admired elaborate dresses, I knew I wanted something super simple and elegant that I would be comfortable in. The only alteration I made to the dress was adding a “V” in the back to make it a little more “me.”
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? The officiant read “Marriage Morning” by Alfred Lord Tennyson, along with some traditional readings from the Bible.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. It was important to us that the music was very non-traditional. I walked down the aisle to “Moon River.” It has always been a favorite of mine (and a gentle nod to the theme song from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which is one of my favorite movies), and it was also my grandfather’s favorite song. He passed when my mother was very young, and knowing that it was his favorite solidified my decision to walk down the aisle to it. We walked back up the aisle together to “At Last,” for obvious reasons. :) Our first dance was to “I Go to the Barn Because I Like The” by Band of Horses. The band has always been a favorite of ours, and the song has always held meaning for us. My father and I danced to “Do You Realize” by the Flaming Lips, Jon and his mother danced to “What a Wonderful World,” and my brother and I danced to “Green Eyes” by Coldplay.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed was my late grandmother’s wedding ring. My something old and blue was material from my late grandmother’s wedding dress (a blue lace suit), which one of my bridesmaids made into a garter. My something new was my dress and shoes.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The FOOD. Epicure of Charleston served up traditional Carolina shrimp and grits, steak, chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, chicken salad sandwiches, crab and artichoke dip, and two varieties of salad.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We had a bit of a roller coaster with our budget. We knew that an outdoor wedding was expensive, but it seemed like we went back and forth with our budget weekly. One day, it would seem like we were right on the mark, and the next day, it would seem like we were going to have to cancel the whole wedding. We even went so far as to tour an indoor venue that we knew we didn’t want. It quickly made us realize that RiverOaks was worth every penny.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Jon: The ceremony. Our pastor performed an amazing service that touched everyone in attendance. Of course, it was also the first time we saw each other that day. Alix: The dancing!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Jon: Make sure that when you’re shopping for venues, you know your budget and ask the owner what the cost of the average wedding is at that venue. Also, figure out as a couple which parts of the wedding are really important to you and put more thought/finance into those aspects of the wedding. It also helps to have parents who are involved and supportive–we could never have done this without them. Alix: Never forget what the wedding is about; it is the covenant made by two people joined in love. Planning is stressful, and can often bring out the worst in each other, but that usually only happens when you lose site of the purpose and the reason for all of the planning.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We currently own a home in downtown Charleston, which we share with a very spoiled dog. We both work close to home and enjoy what we do. Kids are on our minds but it will likely be a few years in the future. At the moment, we’re just thrilled to be starting our lives together!

While I do believe that love can grow from friendship, I am always so tickled to hear from our sweet couples with love-at-first-sight stories. Since I felt the same way about BDK that Jenna felt the first time she saw Cole, I can be a little partial, but there is just something so magical about that moment! Jenna and Cole’s love has continued to grow, and as much as I appreciate how they incorporated college football into their big day, my favorite part has to be their personal vows to each other. While Cole promised to clean up Jenna’s “tornadoes,” Jenna promised to remember that she can be wrong “occasionally.” I love that!

Big thanks to Leah Jean Photography for sharing their big day!

I borrowed the gold pendant that was placed on my bouquet from my great grandmother. My something blue was my Gator garter. I wrapped my bouquet in lace from Cole’s mother’s wedding gown and I wore my grandmother’s pearl ring for my something old. My something new was my rustic cream cowboy boots!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I never really put much thought into my wedding dress prior to getting engaged. However, I did know that I wanted it to be simply elegant with a little special touch. I tried on a few dresses, and honestly, I liked most of them. I ended up with the dress I chose because I fell in love with the back detail.

Describe your wedding flowers. Our dear family friends and amazing floral designers, Trish and Ashlee from Simply Roses, created the most gorgeous wedding florals for us. Since we were having a rustic chic orange and blue wedding, they created three variations of centerpieces using curly willow, burlap-wrapped bottles, and mason jars full of orange garden roses, orange star of Bethlehem, orange thistle, Gomphrena, orange ranunculus, and more.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did do a first look and it was one of the best decisions we have ever made. We really wanted to make sure we had enough time for all the photos we could possibly want, but we also did not want to miss a single moment of the cocktail party and reception. We both love to dance, so a first look was the only way to accomplish everything.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Our favorite detail of our wedding was the incorporation of our favorite football team, the Florida Gators, into our wedding. We had orange and blue incorporated into hand-printed cloth wedding napkins, the flowers, koozies, handmade menu cards, parting gifts, place cards, and wedding programs. The Gator fight song was also played when we were announced at the reception.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I walked down the aisle to “Over the Rainbow” (the Jason Castro version), sung by the Tom Sartori Band. We walked back up the aisle to “If I Could Make a Living Out of Loving You” by Clay Walker, which we chose because it showed our roots of growing up in a small Florida town. Our first dance was to “Love Your Love the Most” by Eric Church, sung by the Tom Sartori Band. We picked this song because of the lyrics “And I love college football games…but I love your love the most.” We both are HUGE Florida Gator fans, so these lyrics were perfect for us.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. It was love at first sight for us. We met at a mutual friends’ wedding. I saw Cole across the room and told each of my girlfriends that I was “going to marry that man!”
Tell us all about the proposal! Cole planned a weekend in one of my favorite places on earth–Highlands, North Carolina. On our first night there, Cole proposed while we were enjoying a glass of wine by the outdoor fireplace. Of course, I said yes! I thought my evening couldn’t get any better, but it did. Cole had arranged for my closet group of girlfriends, who are really more like sisters, to arrive with champagne to celebrate with us for the whole weekend. It was simply perfect!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Yes, we did. My favorite phrase from Cole’s vows was “I promise to clean up your tornadoes and to make you coffee every day.” Cole’s favorite phrases from my vows was “I promise to continue to make dinner time a priority for us and to remember that I can be wrong occasionally.”
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We decided to have a dessert table, which included old-fashioned banana pudding served in shot glasses, key lime tartlets, chocolate cake petite squares, and a red velvet cake topper.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We served shrimp and grits and sent each guest home with a bag of grits, along with a family recipe for shrimp and grits. We also served three variations of sweet tea, pulled pork on cornbread medallions, and Southern succotash at the reception.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Blending both of our families’ ideas on what our wedding should be, while still staying true to what we wanted.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? My favorite detail of our wedding was that so many of our close family and friends traveled to be part of our special day–our guests traveled from Florida, Boston, Georgia, Louisiana, and numerous other locations to celebrate with us.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? When I saw Cole on the bridge for our first look. He looked so handsome that I literally had to stop for moment and catch my breath.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Just breathe and try to enjoy every moment, because before you know it, your day has come and gone. And have a glass of wine when the stress becomes too much. :)
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We just purchased a new home and are starting all the interior and exterior remodeling. We love projects!
