I felt like cheering at my desk while reading Stephanie and Ray’s interview! From the way they carefully wrote their vows to the reason they chose their romantic garden venue, it’s so clear that they approached their wedding with so much thoughtfulness and attentiveness to what truly matters. Our talented Blue Ribbon Vendor, Stefanie Miles, helped them pull together so many beautiful details that reflected their personal styles and love story, but most importantly, her presence let them stay focused on what they really cared about: their marriage and loved ones. I’m sure I’m not the only one wishing I could’ve been a guest at this lovely celebration!

We’re so grateful to Sara & Rocky for sharing Stephanie and Ray’s wedding with us!

Our floral design was one of my favorite surprises on our wedding day. We gave our florist, Maxine of The Southern Table, a lot of creative freedom with the floral arrangements–her only directions were that we wanted a soft, elegant, vintage-inspired feel and pops of crimson, blush, and antique gold to coordinate with our color scheme. She created beautiful bouquets that included astilbe, dahlia, amaranthus, brunia, dusty miller, and hydrangea flowers. We absolutely loved them!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Ray and I decided to do a first look because we wanted to have a few moments to ourselves before the day began. Another factor that helped us decide to have a first a look was the fact that we wanted our wedding party (who had been with us all day) to be able to go immediately to the reception following the ceremony and be with their significant others.

Ray and I decided to write our own vows, because we wanted to spend time considering the promises that we were making to one another on our wedding day. Vows contain such lofty promises, so it was important to us that we acknowledged to one another and the witnesses to our covenant that we would not be able to perfectly fulfill these promises by our own strength. We would need the grace of God and the support of others to make it on this journey. We added a phrase encompassing that, but also kept some wording from traditional wedding vows that I had always cherished.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Ray and I spend a lot of time gardening, so I think we initially appreciated the beautiful greenery of Weston Gardens because we understood the work and toil that goes into a garden. Upon our site visit, we fell in love with the beautiful stones that gave the garden an old-world, European feel. I also loved the idea of our guests being spread out in little nooks and corners throughout the gardens. The white lights strewn through the trees gave the venue a warmth that we were hoping for at our evening wedding.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Hire a wedding planner. I wasn’t originally planning to hire one, but I can’t imagine having gone through that season without ours. Leading up to our wedding, Stefanie provided a lot of creative direction and helped us create a cohesive event. Her input was so valuable to us. It also helped take a lot of pressure off of my fiancé and I, because we had someone else with experience that helped us walk through vendor contracts, event design, reception layout, guest list, and all of the big (and small) decisions that you will need to make at some point. I remember feeling so relaxed on our wedding day because I knew that Stefanie was making sure all of our details were being carried out.

Instead of a traditional wedding cake, our friend Amy made 14 single-tiered wedding cakes that were each topped with an individual letter that spelled out the phrase “This Day Forward,” which we took from our wedding vows. Our cakes were all decorated with buttercream icing, but there were a variety of flavors including chocolate, red velvet, and almond. We used vintage cake stands in silver, white, and lucite. Our florist added the finishing touch with some beautiful greenery on the table. We loved this non-traditional approach to wedding cake, and our guests loved it too.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Ray and I met about seven years ago. Ray saw a picture of me at my friend’s house, and then had her to invite me to a baseball game so he could meet me. We were in a big group, and according to Ray, I didn’t talk very much at the game, so he didn’t think I was interested in him. We remained acquaintances, and five years later, I moved to Dallas and temporarily lived with our mutual friend, Mary Kathryn, and her husband, Tim. Tim and Mary Kathryn happened to need some new flooring, so they called Ray, since he works at a flooring store. Ray came out to measure their home, and noticed that someone was living in their guest room. He asked who it was, and when she told him that it was me, he decided to ask me to dinner. We went on our first date on November 9, 2011, and we ended up talking at the restaurant until it closed. We dated for a year and a half before Ray proposed in April 2013.
Tell us all about the proposal! In order to catch me off guard, Ray decided that he needed to convince me that I was planning the day. He asked Mary Kathryn to invite me to her house for lunch on Sunday, and she nonchalantly told me that I could invite Ray too. Ray had planned to propose to me at the park near their house, where we frequently visited to sit on our favorite bench, but before he could figure out a way to convince me to go, I announced, “It’s beautiful out today. We should go to the park.” I played right into his plans, and Ray couldn’t have been more thrilled. After eating lunch, we grabbed a blanket and some tiramisu and went to the park with our friends. Mary Kathryn happens to be a photographer, and she brought along her camera to “take pictures of [their] daughter.” After awhile, Ray asked me if I would like to go sit on “our bench.” I noticed he had gotten really quiet and Mary Kathryn kept looking over at us. I then asked Ray if “something was going on” and even patted him on the leg to see if I could feel a ring in the pocket of his jeans! Ray realized that time was running out before I figured out what was going on, so he got up from our bench, got down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked me if I would marry him. I said yes! Ray told me later that he proposed at the park and on our bench because he wanted to have a physical place that we could go back to and visit after we got married. It’s been really sweet to go back and sit on “our bench” and I hope we will continue to be able to sit there together through the various seasons that we will go through as husband and wife.
When did y’all get married? October 20, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 200
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I found my wedding dress at a small boutique in Dallas on my first visit, although I returned a few times “just to make sure.” I had hoped to find a lace gown without much beading, and found a beautiful Mori Lee design that fit that description. My mom and two sisters came to see the dress and affirmed the decision. We added a veil with lace trim and a satin belt with a small touch of beading to complete the look.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We chose the song, “The One You’ll Find” by the musicians Shane & Shane for the processional because it has a beautiful crescendo that we timed to reach the peak when I walked down the aisle with my dad. We chose the song “Always Been About You” by Fellowship Creative for our recessional because it is folky and up-beat. Our first dance was to “You and Me” by the Dave Matthews Band.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: Our wedding party’s attire! I thought everyone looked great, and it was fun to see how the look we had been striving for came together. We gave the girls a color scheme, but allowed them to pick out their own dresses. The guys’ attire was purchased from Banana Republic. They were able to keep their clothing after the wedding, and several of the girls were able to borrow dresses as well, which was wonderful.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? When I think about Southern traditions, I think about the saying “a family affair.” One of my favorite things about our wedding was that our family was very involved. My sister and aunt are both cosmetologists, so my aunt did my hair the morning of our wedding and my sister worked on my makeup. I loved involving them in the process and being surrounded by people that I love. It’s something I’ll never forget.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? One of my favorite details from our wedding was serving communion to our wedding party. Ray and I wanted to begin our new life as a married couple by serving those around us. After praying and taking communion ourselves, we turned and served those in our wedding party. It was a beautiful moment, and I cherished getting to share that with those who were dearest to us.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Right now, we are enjoying life at a slower pace. Ray is thinking about possibly changing careers, and I am just trying not to burn our dinner every night. We are hoping to buy and fix up a house at some point to make it our own. We’ve found one nearby that we would love to purchase and hopefully raise a family in someday. I have loved living life every day with my best friend. Our wedding day was an incredible day and one I’ll never forget, but I’m looking forward to life with my husband and all of the memories and stories that are yet to come.

Fair warning, y’all–today’s couple is really cute. I loved reading Lauren and Cole’s story, getting a peek at their secretly-videotaped proposal, and finally, admiring the way their gorgeous fall wedding came together. Lauren described the venue as the “perfect merging” of their personalities, but it goes beyond that as well–there are so many details at their wedding that represent them both individually and as a couple. I think every bride and groom wants their guests to leave their wedding saying the celebration was “so them,” and I can only imagine how much Lauren and Cole were told those exact words!

Thanks so much to Sara & Rocky for sharing this beautiful wedding with us!

The first time I went to try dresses on, I brought a group of six special women with me. I tried on some amazing dresses that day and had a blast, but didn’t find the dress for me. My mom and I spent a few more weekends searching and finally ended up at the Neiman Marcus bridal salon. Ironically, this salon was where my aunt, mom, and cousin all found their wedding dresses. I tried on a few dresses, all with lots of texture, and had some great options, but when I put on Vera Wang’s Jasmine dress, I fell in love. As much as I didn’t think it would happen to me, I started glowing and couldn’t stop smiling. It was the dress I knew I could walk toward Cole in.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Yes, we did. It was more about logistics in the beginning, but I am so glad we did it. It was harder than I had thought it would be to not see Cole all day on the biggest day of our relationship so far. Our first look was a reality check of what this day was about–Cole, me, and God. When we finally saw each other, I felt so joyful and at ease.

What made you choose your venue? It was absolutely gorgeous and we wanted to have a destination wedding without it being a true “destination.” Since Cole and I went to different colleges in different states, we have so many friends spread across the country. We figured they all had to travel anyway, so why not have them come to a city that has so much to offer our guests? Camp Lucy was the perfect merging of mine and Cole’s personalities–relaxed and natural, but elegant.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? No, we decided there were vows out there that were already beautifully written. My favorite part of our vows read: “I promise to love you with all of my heart, and to be true and faithful, patient, kind, and unselfish in this love.”
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? This is a hard question–so much of it is incredibly memorable. One that sticks out specifically was during our ceremony. When we were exchanging vows, Ocho, our dog, spoke up too with a grunt-moan noise. It was hilarious! The crowd laughed and our pastor announced that Ocho said “yes” too.

Describe your wedding flowers. UNBELIEVABLE! The ladies at Gypsy Floral outdid themselves. They made my mood board of dreamy images come to life. The flowers were incredibly lush and elegant, and they made the whole venue feel complete and magical.

My mom handmade Mr. and Mrs. pillows for our sweetheart table, which each had pins and keepsakes about Cole and I, like a vintage Jayhawk badge and a vintage Alabama banner. My mom also made beautiful boards displaying all of our family wedding photos, going back to our great grandmothers. The wooden cross we used during the ceremony was the same cross my best friend used for her wedding. We even pulled a selection of vintages and labels of Cabernet Savignon from my parents’ wine cellar to serve at the reception.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. The bride’s cake was a simple four-tier cake with a combination of lemon cake with lemon mousse and white cake with strawberry Grand Marnier filling. It had a wonderful buttercream icing applied with textured detail and lined with greenery by our florists. The groom’s cake was a round chocolate cake filled with a layer of chocolate mousse and raspberry purée and covered with chocolate ganache. It was topped with a large University of Alabama seal in fondant.

For our first dance, we had our band, Blind Date, learn Josh Abbot Band’s “She’s Like Texas.” During our long-distance relationship, it was one of the songs Cole sent me the lyrics to, and it has been one of “our” songs since then. We knew our first dance had to be a country song and something we could two-step to.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met sometime between sixth and seventh grade. Our families were connected through several people and activities, so we just got used to seeing each other around. We “dated” in middle school, if you can even call it that, for about a month before I broke up with him the day after Valentine’s Day! From then until our freshman year of college, we were good friends–he was the guy I could always depend on. He was even my prom date! We went our separate ways in college; he attended the University of Alabama and I went to the University of Kansas. At the beginning of sophomore year, I couldn’t deny my feelings anymore–I decided the moment I saw Cole back home over Thanksgiving break that I was going to tell him how I felt. Thankfully, our families planned to spend Thanksgiving together at our lake house, so I knew I would have the opportunity. After dinner one evening, we walked up to the top of the boat dock to look at the stars and I told him that I wanted a relationship with him. Thank goodness he felt the same way and had since 7th grade!
Tell us all about the proposal! Cole invited a few of our friends to the lake house the last weekend in September. It was cool and rainy outside, so we were all hanging out on the boat dock. Between rounds of a card game, Cole walked upstairs to the top of our dock. I eventually wandered up there to see what he was doing in the rain! He started hugging me and I heard his heart pounding in his chest. Then, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said yes, of course, and then our friends ran upstairs screaming. Little did I know, all of this was being filmed on a GoPro camera. It can be seen here. Cole then made up a pretty convincing story that our good friends called and said there was something wrong with their neighbor’s dock. Cole, being the great guy he is, offered to go check it out, so we all loaded up in the car, drove over to their house, and got one of the biggest surprises! Everyone–our families, some of my friends, and his friends–were waiting for us. He even flew in my sister from Portland and my dearest cousin from Montana! When I saw them, I lost all control–it was definitely one of the best days of my life. We proceeded to party from noon till midnight.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We had a wonderful quartet for music during seating and through our cocktail hour. Cole is a man of tradition and used to play the cello, so he wanted me to walk down the aisle to “Canon in D.” Cole also picked our recessional–much less traditional, but very fun, “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns and Roses. One of my favorite things about our ceremony was when my aunt and cousin sang the Lennon and Maisy version of “I won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz during communion.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I borrowed my cousin’s garter, which both she and my sister wore at their weddings. My something old was my emerald necklace, given to me by my grandmother when I was a child. She and my grandfather had purchased one for each granddaughter on a trip to Africa. My something new was a gift from Cole–emerald earrings that he gave me the morning of the wedding to match my necklace.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Cowboy boots all around! Cole’s were his custom-made Alabama boots that seem to be glued to his feet! The groomsmen sported eggplant bow ties. All the meats served were local game meats: quail, venison and beef. We also served local Dripping Springs vodka, Tito’s vodka, Shiner Bock, and Fireman’s 4 beers.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Planning was surprisingly smooth. The most difficult thing overall was probably planning the wedding from out of town, since we had limited time to meet with different vendors. Thankfully, we had a great wedding planner who filtered through various vendors and would set up 2-3 options for us to meet with when we could.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our wedding would not have been the same without ALL the vendors, but I was exceptionally happy to have the ladies of Gypsy Floral. They understood my vision for the wedding and I had complete faith in their ability to transform the venue into my dream space.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Have a detailed rain plan!! Although, I refused to think about the possibility of it raining, our wedding planner, Ashlee Voda, made sure we had one in place, just in case. Well, we were in that “case,” not just because of the moisture, but because of the 35 degree temperatures! Be prepared so that if it comes to that, the stress won’t make the situation worse.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We bought a house a couple of months before we got married so we could begin to do some work on it. Absolutely crazy idea–talk about a lot going on! But, it was amazing to come home from our honeymoon and spend our first night in our new home together.

One thing we love most about the South, and Southern weddings in particular, is that accompanying a love for tradition is an equally strong love for being true to ourselves. Today’s lovely couple, Megan and Aaron, are a perfect example of this. Planning a wedding in six months, walking down the aisle to bluegrass music, and playing lawn games in October, for example, are all things that many people might consider “against the rules” when it comes to weddings, but as Megan realized, there really aren’t any rules! As a result, their wedding was full of moments and details that truly meant something to them.

We’re so inspired by Megan and Aaron–thanks to Chris Isham for sharing their wedding with us!

We had talked about getting married for quite awhile, but the night we got engaged was a complete surprise. Two of my friends from Nashville were in town for the weekend. Aaron found out the ring was ready on Friday, and after talking with the girls, he made a plan to ask me that same night. For the entire night, the girls were stalling me, but I had no idea–he apparently kept texting them to say he needed more time. After a leisurely stroll through the park, a concert, and a tour of my place, we finally arrived at Aaron’s house. His car wasn’t there, so I assumed he wasn’t home. After some coaxing to get me into the kitchen, I turned the corner to see him standing in the dark with candles lit, tons of flowers, and the cutest handmade sign ever. I was in complete shock, but of course, I said yes!

I knew I wanted a very neutral color scheme for the wedding overall, but I also wanted to have a few subtle hints of fall. My flowers were mostly white and blush with green accents and hints of rust and dark brown. I don’t know a ton about flowers, but I told the florist what I was looking for, and they completely nailed it!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My old and blue was one and the same. Within the last few years, I lost my grandparents. They were the sweetest couple and I really admired their marriage. My grandfather served in the Vietnam War, and while he was away, he sent my grandmother a sweet pillow cover that said, “Sweetheart- Until we meet again, sweet thoughts to you I send, may all my blessings be with you, Your sweetheart always true.” I had my seamstress cut this part of the pillow cover and sew it into the bottom of my dress. It was a way to have them as part of the wedding even though they weren’t physically there. My something new was my dress and jewelry. For my something borrowed, one of my maids of honor took part of the leftover material from her bridesmaid dress after she had it altered and incorporated it into a garter for me.

We hired a bluegrass band to play at our reception and a few songs for the ceremony. Instead of going with traditional wedding songs, the wedding party and I walked down the aisle to some fun, upbeat, traditional bluegrass songs. It fit perfectly with the setting and casual atmosphere I wanted for the wedding.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We chose to say the traditional vows that our pastor provided us with, but there was a line in them that I hadn’t heard before. It said, “I pledge to never stop learning to be your husband/wife.” It was my favorite line because it’s so true that marriage is a learning process. Neither of us is going to be perfect all the time. The goal is to learn how to be a better wife/husband throughout this journey.

The biggest challenge for me in the whole wedding planning process was trying to find a venue. We got engaged in April and we wanted to get married by November. Since most brides plan their weddings at least a year out, I had a hard time finding availability. I stumbled upon a venue in Asheville called Yesterday Spaces and absolutely fell in love, but they only had Sundays available. After talking it over with Aaron and my family, we decided we could make it work if we had the wedding earlier in the day. Once the venue was locked in, wedding planning was smooth sailing from there on out.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding had a very Southern feel. The setting was on a farm and the ceremony was outside. At the reception, we opted for a buffet-style dinner with lots of yummy food, including a good ol’ Southern side of mac and cheese, and of course, sweet tea!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. I went with a small, simple, white, round cake with ombre ruffles, and then had a variety of cupcakes with mini ruffles. Aaron isn’t a big dessert person, but he does love apple pie, so instead of a groom’s cake, we also had mini apple, pecan, and pumpkin pies. The desserts were displayed on white porcelain stands and slices of tree to give the dessert table the rustic and elegant look I was going for.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? You don’t have to go with tradition or do what everyone else does. In some aspects of our wedding, I felt like I needed to do the “traditional” things, but some of them just didn’t feel like us. After someone told me I didn’t HAVE to do anything, I quit stressing about the things I felt like I should do, and just went with things that we liked.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. In the summer of 2011, I was encouraged to try online dating by a friend’s sister. I brushed it off, but later mentioned it to my roommate. After being “dared” and curiosity getting the best of me, I took the plunge and joined an online dating site for one month. Luckily, Aaron was encouraged by a few friends to give it a try as well and joined at the same time I did. Three months after communicating, we met up in Greenville for a brief coffee date, and then two months later, we had our first official date in Nashville. We dated long distance for almost a year before I moved to Greenville, and we got engaged a few months after I moved down.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I went home to Nashville to go dress shopping with my mom over Memorial Day weekend. I knew if I didn’t find a dress that weekend, I would most likely have to shop without my mom, so I was determined to find something. I found my dress at the second store we went to and I fell in love with it immediately. We already had an appointment set up at another store afterwards, so I went to take a look at some other options, just in case. The whole time I was there, I kept thinking about the other dress, so we rushed back to go get it!
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We did do a first look. Aaron was hesitant, but I wanted to be able to hug, kiss, and talk to him the first time I saw him that day. I’m so glad we did. The rest of the day flew by, so it was nice to share a few moments alone before all the craziness of the day started.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The caterer created “His” and “Hers” signature drink to serve. Aaron likes ginger, so his was a blackberry ginger lemonade. I love fruity drinks, so mine was a sparkling strawberry, pineapple, and kiwi cocktail.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? I can honestly say I was thrilled with all my vendors. Every one of them was amazing to work with, and they truly wanted to make our wedding day wonderful. The day went off without a hitch because of their hard work, which made for a fun and stress-free day.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Taking communion together as a couple during our ceremony is something that stands out from our wedding day. A friend of mine played a song we love on her guitar while the pastor prayed over us, and we had communion privately. It was just a special moment between the two of us.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Aaron and I are in the process of looking for and buying a house. I can’t wait to get settled into our first home together, start lots of traditions, and make lots of memories as a family.
