While today’s lovely couple has been inseparable ever since they met, Lauren still didn’t catch a few of the more minor meaningful details Marshall included in his proposal (read below for the whole sweet story!). When it came to their big day, however, these two didn’t miss any opportunity to work in personal, thoughtful touches — both for each other (a fun cigar bar!), and for their guests. With the help of their planner, Katrina at Come Together Events, they created a day that was truly a reflection of not only their relationship, but their family and friends, as well: “throughout, we tried to think of small, personal ways to show everyone who came how much we appreciated them.” Love that Southern hospitality!

Big hugs to Cunningham Photo Artists for sharing this gorgeous, classic day with us!

Eek, I get so excited every time I see a monogram dress patch!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress.
It was the first one I tried on! I had pretty concrete ideas about how I wanted my wedding dress to look before I tried anything on, which could have easily created a lot of problems. Lace dresses seemed to be very popular at the time we got engaged, and I’ve always thought lace was very romantic and classic; but I wanted something just a little more unexpected. I had fallen in love with the beaded bodice of a gown I’d seen while dress shopping with one of my best friends for her wedding a year or so before, but I didn’t care for the fabric of the skirt. When I opened the bridal magazine that my roommate gave me the day after Marshall and I got engaged and saw a beaded bodice, Chantilly lace, and silk organza all in one dress, I knew it was the one! I immediately called my mom and she ran out to find the magazine. I searched online for stores in my area that carried that designer, and of course, none did in their regular collections. One boutique, Hayden Olivia Bridal in Charlotte happened to be hosting a trunk show the following month. I called to see if the dress would be available to try on, and they were kind enough to add it to the show inventory. We set up the appointment; I tried it on, and didn’t look any further.

My “something old” was a necklace that my grandmother had given me a year or so before our wedding. It is so elegant that I hadn’t found an occasion to wear it, so the first time was in our wedding. My “something new” was a pair of diamond earrings that my dad surprised me with the month before our wedding. My “something borrowed” was a diamond bracelet from my grandmother. My “something blue” was a pair of porcelain blue birds of paradise that my mom carried in her bouquet when she and my dad got married.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
The moment the sanctuary doors opened. My dad and I had been standing behind them closed for what seemed like a long time, so the anticipation was mounting. I could hear that the music was leading up to our processional, and I tried to prepare myself. But when those doors finally opened, and I saw all of our family and friends there, spilling all the way to the back of the church I didn’t think we could fill, and Marshall at the end of the aisle. It took my breath away. I think I audibly gasped. I remember the church coordinator whispering quite loudly, “Walk!”

We did not do a “first look.” When it came to planning our wedding ceremony, we found that we both wanted it to be very traditional. For us, all of the anticipation of the walk down the aisle came with that. I wanted to be in my dress and walking down the aisle at the moment that I first saw Marshall on our wedding day. It’s a special memory for me. As far as the photography considerations behind a “first look,” we had a great compromise. We did an “after session.” Marshall put back on his tux. I had my hair and makeup done again, another bouquet made, and got to be a bride for another day. It was so nice to have an excuse to put that beautiful dress back on before it had to be preserved and put away! I would highly recommend it!

Describe your wedding flowers.
Lots of white! I wanted an all-white wedding, and Marshall was all for it. We used a lot of different flowers to create texture and subtle contrast. Lynette Atienza of Charlotte’s The Bloom Room completely understood my vision and ran with it! She’s amazing! The bouquets were packed full of “fluffy” flowers like hydrangeas, dahlias, garden roses, and ranunculus. Some of that was carried through to the reception tables in lower arrangements, but our main idea for the flowers at the reception was that they be almost forest-like, an autumn interpretation of flowering branches. Lynette put together gorgeous tall arrangements with larkspur and delphinium to create a lengthy, branch-like look, as well as actual birch branches. It was breathtaking when we walked in! I think my very favorite part (besides my bouquet) was the entry piece, an overflowing mound of Phalaenopsis orchids. We had played around so many ideas for the entry table, but our wedding planner, Katrina Hutchins of Come+Together Events and Lynette kept saying that it could be better. They finally came up with this showstopper of an arrangement, and it was incredible!

Describe your wedding cake or dessert.
The design was white icing with white pressed sugar flowers cascading down the cake. It coordinated perfectly with the flower arrangements and the pressed flower details on the menus, place cards, and escort cards. The cake itself was one layer of strawberry (Marshall’s favorite) and one layer of “chocolate decadence” (my favorite), so each guest could have a taste of both in one slice. It was iced in Italian meringue buttercream. Delicious!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
Marshall would say the cigar bar. He likes to indulge in a cigar every now and then, so our wedding reception seemed like the perfect time to let him have his fill! Since he let me go crazy with flowers and all things white, something special for him was a must. My favorite detail of the ceremony, apart from getting married of course, was Communion. Ours was a religious ceremony, and we chose to have Communion be a part of it. As we sat at the front of the church, all of our family and friends who chose to participate filed down the aisle. It created a communal environment and gave Marshall and I the opportunity to really let it sink in just how many people had come to support us. My favorite detail of the reception was the pressed flowers on all of the paper products. There were literally flowers everywhere! I just couldn’t get enough! And the koozies!

Judging by Lauren’s hair, her and Marshall’s reception was a blast!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story.
We met the weekend before we both began our first year of law school. A group of fellow 1Ls were meeting up at a local watering hole. I tagged along with some new friends, and Marshall was the first person I met. He challenged me to a game of pool that did not go very well for either of us, but we hit it off! We went on our first date the following weekend and have been together ever since!

Tell us all about the proposal!
Throughout the whole day, Marshall did the sweetest things, only they were completely lost on me at the time. I didn’t realize until that evening that he had been attempting to hit all of the milestones of our relationship all day long. For example, he insisted that we go to lunch at the place we had our first date. Only that restaurant was not my favorite, so I kept suggesting others. He finally ordered it to go and brought it to me, saying that he was just really in the mood for it that afternoon. Before dinner, he was, again, unusually adamant about getting drinks at the bar where we first met. I, again, unknowingly kept messing up his plans. After a quick drink outside at the bar he was so set on going to, we left the patio area through a back entrance that rerouted us through a small courtyard. He proposed there, in this hidden green space beside the place we first met. It was very sentimental and romantic. He did a great job!

When did y’all get married?
September

How many friends, family, and loved ones attended your wedding?
230

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony?
I Corinthians 13 Colossians 3:14-17

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We chose Canon in D for the seating of the mothers and Grandmothers, Rigaudon for the bridesmaids, and Trumpet Voluntary in D Major for my walk down the aisle. For our recessional, we chose Allegro Maestoso from Handel’s Water Music Suite. We had many hymns play during our ceremony, like “Love Divine” and “All Loves Excelling for the Beauty of the Earth,” which was sung by our local children’s choir. It was magical.  Our first dance song was “La Vie en Rose” by Louis Armstrong. The father-daughter dance was “I Loved Her First” by Heartland, and the mother-son dance was “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding?
When I think of the South, especially in the context of a huge party like a wedding, I think of hospitality. Throughout our planning process, we tried to think of small, personal ways to show everyone who came how much we appreciated them. We hand wrote thank you notes on all 230 parting gift boxes and made a point during dinner to go to every table as a couple and say hello to each person who took the time to celebrate with us.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Meeting each other’s expectations and making compromises. There is a lot of pressure on brides and grooms to do something new, unique, or “better” than the next couple. I found that I had expectations going into wedding planning that I didn’t even realize I had. We quickly found that we were so much happier and content planning our wedding when we stayed true to ourselves and prioritized.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding?
Lighting. It’s relatively inexpensive and accentuates all of those things, big and small, that you’ve planned and paid so much for.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding?
Consider your family and your guests. When we first started planning, I naively thought this day was all about Marshall and me. Weddings are such a family affair; it’s a big day for a lot of people. So, I would encourage brides and grooms to take the time to consider how to make those most important to them feel loved and included in their big day. And for your guests, I highly, HIGHLY recommend taking the extra time to assign seating. It may be extra work, but it will make each guest feel welcome and included in your day. It achieves so many things: acknowledges that you’re aware the guest has made the effort to attend your wedding, expresses a level of appreciation for their effort in that you’ve planned specifically for them, gives them a “home base” for the night (everyone needs a place to set their purse), ensures that couples and friend groups won’t be split up, guarantees your mother and grandmother a prime spot at the reception (your grandmother will want a seat, and she’ll want it to be a good one), and no one wants to eat standing up (not even a young person).

What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future?
We’re enjoying settling into our new life in Charlotte. We’re fortunate to be close to family and friends and in a city that we both love. Married life is off to a very happy and content start for us.

What a stunning classic wedding. Have you noticed tuxedos making a comeback recently for the men? It seems like all of a sudden, there is a shift back towards more formal elegance (which always looks fantastic!).

Pink + sparkly Kate Spade dancing shoes, a perfect Southern bump, a custom monogram, lush pastel peonies… oh my heavens, y’all, I’m in heaven! Pink sparkly heaven! Angelica + Colby’s romantic Texas nuptials were filled with some of my very favorite wedding details, but classic and romantic didn’t always describe A + C’s relationship. In fact, Colby told us, “If someone had told my wife that she would be marrying me after we first met, she probably would have punched them.” We’re sure glad that after awhile the two reconnected for a more amicable time, and of course, this sweet day. Plus, I don’t actually believe Colby: check out his face as Angelica comes down the aisle. That’s one smitten kitten!

Big hugs to Jake Holt for not only capturing all the pretty details, but also such awesome moments (dying over the thumbs up shot!).

If I had these Kate Spades, I’d wear them to the grocery store! Scouts honor!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress.
If I said it was the first and only dress I tried on, you’d think I was kidding, but I’m not! We had gone to Joan Pillow Bridal “just to look.” I browsed the dresses and saw one I liked. “This will do,” I told my mom. Since we had some time to think about it, she told me that if in a month I was still dreaming of that dress, it was mine. A month later we made an appointment, tried the dress on, and ordered it! It was the perfect dress for me, my body, and my dream wedding. My consultant at Joan Pillow was told me I could try more dresses on for fun if I wanted! So I did, just so I could say I tried on more than one!

Angelica, your Southern bump rocks my world! Pure Southern hair perfection!

Describe your wedding flowers.
They were perfect! I wanted a romantic, spring look and what we got was 100 times better than what I ever expected. The peonies were full and fragrant, the roses were perfectly bloomed and the orchids, ranuculous and hydrangeas were the perfect shade of pink! My bouquet was exactly what I wanted — full of peonies, roses, and rhinestone-studded stephanotis all wrapped up with a tulle tutu! I had saved a photo of this bouquet from Southern Weddings before Pinterest and my florist made it better than I could have imagined! All the arrangements were large, full and soft — perfectly accenting the ceremony and reception.

Y’all, Angela’s pink tutu bouquet inspiration is right here! Gorgeous!

We love that Angelica brought a photo from Southern Weddings to her florist, but I’d have to say this floral goodness below is out of control!

Come on, Colby’s expression is absolutely my favorite detail of this wedding! A-dor-a-ble!

Did you decide to do a “first look”? We did not do a first look. All during the planning, Colby had insisted on seeing me for the first time when I walked down the aisle in my dress. I knew it was his day too, so we skipped the first look. He is very traditional when it comes to certain things and this was a non-negotiable! It was so wonderful walking down the aisle and seeing him as happy as ever. The raw emotion was 110% worth it, but it was SO hard not telling him about and showing him my dress!

Did you write your own vows?
I wanted to recite traditional vows and Colby wanted to write our own, so we compromised by combining different traditional vows, written in our own words. I just think there is something so romantic about reciting vows that people have been using to unite themselves in marriage for years and years, but thought it was so “us” to make them our own.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony?
We had two readings during the ceremony. The first one was E.E. Cummings’ “I Carry Your Heart.” We had asked my dear cousin Michele to pick something to read and she said if she were to have had a reading at her wedding, this would have been it! We also had Romans 12:9-12 read during the ceremony. Colby’s cousin Tucker read in on behalf of his sister Jennifer who couldn’t be there because she had just completed a bone marrow transplant and was in North Carolina healing. (She’s now cancer free!)

There were a lot of family heirlooms used throughout our day. The alter was an antique hutch that my great grandparents had when they were young; I had it refinished for the wedding, and now it’s our favorite piece in our house! We also used a cake knife that everyone in my family used at their weddings. I wore my great grandmother’s necklace that all the girls have worn in their weddings, and carried my grandmother’s handkerchief with me down the aisle. My something blue was a sorority tradition, and Colby changed bow ties and into a white dinner coat after the ceremony. We also served individual Frito pies as our late night snack!

The cakes were delicious! The wedding cake was a Chambord-soaked yellow cake, with vanilla mousse and fresh raspberries. It was SO good. I hope the cake tier we have in the freezer tastes half as good as it did on our wedding day! The groom’s cake was a traditional red velvet cake that was an absolute replica of the Rolling Stone’s “Let It Bleed” Album. The Stones are Colby’s favorite band, and other than not having a first look, this was the only other non-negotiable! The Four Seasons Pastry chefs make a red velvet that you dream about.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding. My mom really wanted to dance down the aisle to “Brick House.” She has a funny sense of humor! We had classic selections instead, though. I walked down the aisle to “Moon River” by Henry Mancini. It was just one of those classic romantic songs that sounded beautiful performed by strings. During the ceremony, my brother and cousin performed “Your Song” by Elton John. My mom picked it out, and since then, I hear it all the time! The recessional was “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. It was especially fitting since it had rained the entire week leading up to the wedding. Our first dance was to “It Had to Be You” by Frank Sinatra. It’s such a classic love song and fitting for our big band during the reception.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.
(From the groom) Classic romantic stories do not apply to us whatsoever. In fact, if someone had told my wife that she would be marrying me after we first met, she probably would have punched them. Well, maybe not punched, but she definitely would have given them the stink eye. When I was relocating back to TX, we were introduced at a local Houston watering hole by mutual friends who were dating at the time. I was seeing someone, and she was wrapping up her college career. It wasn’t really a set up to begin with, but I was a bit of a jerk, and she made it very clear that I was acting as such. At the end of the evening, we went our separate ways. Six months later on my 25th birthday, I had finally moved back to Texas and found myself freshly single (as in,  we broke up on my birthday) and hanging out with the same mutual friends in Austin. Angelica was also in attendance, and while she was still convinced I was a bit of a pompous jerk, she knew that I was in the middle of a quarter-life crisis and was extremely compassionate. She helped me through a pretty bad birthday weekend. Over the remainder of that summer we stayed in close communication and began dating. The rest, as they say, is history.
Describe the proposal.
I was supposed to fly to Dallas with my boss for a day trip to go shopping for clients. We got to the airport, and right as we’re about to go through security, my boss turned to me, handed me a sealed envelope and said, “This is where I leave you. Colby is waiting for you.” I went to find Colby and was shocked. I didn’t pack anything but he assured me that everything was okay, that I had luggage, and that my mom was on her way to Austin for the weekend to watch our dogs. He promised no more surprises, and I was so relieved and happy. On Saturday morning, we had a lovely brunch at Farmer Brown and then walked all over the city. Colby kept saying, “Let’s go over there and take pictures,” which I found weird since he really doesn’t like getting his picture taken. Later, we walked down to the water at Baker Beach and it’s at this point when Colby starts texting someone and checking his watch. It was getting a little annoying, so I said to him, “Why do you keep checking your watch? Is something magical going to happen at 4pm?” Apparently so. A few moments later he looked at me and said, “You know how I said no more surprises? I lied” He got down on his knees and said, “I have something to ask you. Will you marry me?” I’m bawling at this point and he’s smiling from ear to ear. Of course I said yes! He pulled the most beautiful ring out of his pocket and put it on my finger. I turned around to see some people walking over. It was my best friend Carmen and her dad with cameras! Colby had them in on the surprise, too!
In what month did you get married?
May
How many guests attended your wedding?
120
Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
For me, it was the sequined linens and our custom monogram. The linens were something that I had dreamed about for so long, that when they arrived and I saw the room come together, it was magic. Our monogram was splashed all over the wedding and now, our home. It’s traditional, but fresh. For Colby, his favorite detail was his Rolling Stones-themed grooms cake and the home-brewed Honey Basil Wheat Ale that he brewed as our favors! It was a huge hit!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding?
Keeping all the families happy (also known as the battle of the bride’s side versus the groom’s side). I won’t go into detail, but make sure that when you talk to each side of the family, that you make sure they know the wedding is about you and your fiancé, and the joining of two families, not anything or anyone else. We had a few moments of sheer insanity a week out and it was really hard to look past that. Luckily for everyone, we decided not to run off and elope! The wedding went on blissfully and even if certain people decided not to speak to us the entire weekend of the wedding, it was perfect!
What range did your wedding budget fall into?
$25,000-$50,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on?
Lighting and our videographer. We waited until about two weeks before the wedding to add lighting and it really transformed the room. I couldn’t have imagined our reception without it! Our videographer was amazing. At the end of the day, you’re left with photos and video. Photos are amazing, but seeing and hearing the day is even better!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Colby’s favorite moments are a tie between seeing me walk down the aisle and leaving up the stairs in a swarm of flutter-fetti while everyone cheered for us. For me, if was standing in front of all our family and friends saying our vows. It was such a special moment.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Relax, don’t procrastinate, go with your instinct, and if you can afford to do something you really love, splurge. You’ll regret it if you don’t. Also during planning, stop every now and then to remember WHY you are getting married. Planning has a tendency to get carried out of control. Once a month or so, Colby and I would go to the ceremony site and talk about how excited we were to be spending the rest of our lives together.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future?
2012 was a BIG year for us! We got married, settled, and uprooted! In December we moved to the Bay Area for Colby’s new job. For now, we are enjoying being married, traveling and exploring our new home! Starting a family is in the future, just not anytime soon. We have our hands full with our two dogs right now!

Our February Southern Bride of the Month is squeaking in just under the wire! I know y’all will love Jen, and will enjoy as much as I did reading about some of the smart planning decisions she and Nick have made. (I especially liked their plan for setting priorities — see below!) Let’s give this lady a warm welcome!

Hi! What’s your name?
Jen Welch

What’s your fiancé’s name?
Nick Rueter

Vue Photography

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story.
We met during our freshman year of college at Vanderbilt University. My close friend from home joined the same fraternity as Nick. When I stopped by to hang out with him, Nick always seemed to catch my eye. We went on our first date the day before school started our sophomore year, and the rest was history. Our introduction has become even more meaningful, as that friend will be serving as Nick’s best man at our wedding!

Vue Photography

When’s the big day?
June 22, 2013 – four months to go! I always knew I wanted a summer wedding since my favorite flowers are hydrangeas, and I wanted them to be beautiful and in season for my wedding!

Blue hydrangea inspiration from Brian Kraft and Martha Stewart Weddings

Where might you two be tying the knot?
We are having both the ceremony and the reception at The St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta.

How did you pick your ceremony and reception venues? What do you love most about each space?
Nick and I have celebrated many special occasions at The St. Regis over the past few years, so the venue was already meaningful to us. We knew we wanted to have the ceremony and reception at the same location and wanted to keep things indoors to spare our guests from the brutal Atlanta heat. The St Regis was the first venue we visited after we got engaged, and while we considered a few others, we concluded rather quickly that the elegance of the St. Regis would be the perfect backdrop for our wedding!

The gorgeous lobby of the St. Regis Atlanta!

Tell us a little bit about the wedding you’re planning: style, theme, feel, colors?
I’ve always wanted a black tie wedding, so I knew the style and theme would need to feel very formal and sophisticated. At the same time, I want to give everything a contemporary edge. I love the color blue, so we have looked for ways to incorporate that with French blue bridesmaid dresses, navy ink for our invitations, blue hydrangeas for bridesmaid bouquets, and blue lighting for the reception. We also loved the idea of having our wedding ceremony in a dimly lit ballroom surrounded by candles to make the event feel very special and intimate!

Who or what has been most helpful and/or inspiring in the wedding planning process?
I am very lucky to have my Mom in Atlanta with me to help with a lot of the details. She has an amazing ability to keep me focused on my vision when I get indecisive. My mom also was smart enough to hire us a wedding planner right away, and Lindsay Pitt of Toast has been very helpful with navigating and refining my hundreds of ideas. I am also very lucky to have eight wonderful bridesmaids, several of which recently got married and have been a huge help by sharing advice they learned from their big day.

What part of wedding planning, if any, has made you the most anxious?
We are so excited to see all of our guests during the wedding weekend, so we are trying to allow for as much time as possible with our friends and family. When we started working on the timeline for the weekend, we realized how quickly the whole day, and especially the evening, will go by, and we were worried we wouldn’t have a chance to talk to every guest. To try and alleviate some of that anxiety, we decided to try and get all of our guests together after the rehearsal dinner to celebrate the wedding weekend prior to the big day! We are also considering doing a first look so we can join the cocktail hour and start celebrating with all of the people who are so important to us as soon as possible!

What wedding-related decision have you been the most indecisive on?
Definitely the invitations! I always knew I wanted to do a calligraphy letterpress invitation, but I have been very indecisive regarding whether to stick with a traditional style or to incorporate some more modern elements. We are working with hi note for all our stationery and they have been fabulous at listening to our ideas and turning them into actual concepts, not to mention that they have been very patient with me considering I’ve changed my mind at least ten times! I am still going back and forth on this part, but have to make a decision pretty soon.

Which part of your wedding have you been most intentional about planning?
Probably the most important aspect of a wedding, to us, and the one that we’re most excited about for our own wedding, is the food. We want the food to match the formality of the event, but also want it to be fun and to showcase some Southern ingredients. It was also important to us that the rehearsal dinner menu complement, but not duplicate, the wedding menu. We’ve worked very closely with the chefs at these venues to create menus that we are truly excited about.

Have you picked your dress yet? How’d that go? What will you be wearing on the big day?
Yes! I ordered it back in July and it should come in sometime in the next few weeks. I worked with Susan at Joan Pillow, who made the process as stress-free as possible despite how difficult a decision this was for me. I had always dreamed of wearing a Monique Lhuillier gown, so I went in to Joan Pillow right after we got engaged and thought I had found “the one”. Lucky for me, there was a Monique trunk show a few weeks later, so I went back to order it, but I ended up falling in love with a different gown from the new collection! It is the complete opposite of the gown I was planning to order the first day. I ended up ordering the gown from the trunk show and can’t wait for it to arrive in a few weeks, as I know that will make this all feel very real!

What do you love most about Southern weddings?
I have always admired the way a big Southern wedding can still feel intimate and personalized. While I always knew I wanted a big black tie affair, it was also important that the whole event reflected our personalities and that each guest would walk away knowing we were involved in every detail of the night. I think Southern weddings feel very special because Southern brides pay a lot of attention to the details, especially the delicious Southern food they usually serve their guests!

Tell us about planning with your fiancé. Has it gone smoothly? Is he more involved, or hands-off?
Nick has been very hands on and has made efforts to attend every wedding-related meeting, even if just for the support. Nick has also contributed some great ideas of his own, including an incredible idea for a way to personalize our cocktail hour. It will be a very fun surprise for our guests and make our cocktail hour very unique! I feel incredibly fortunate to have a fiancé who is involved and brings a different perspective than I have to every decision.

What do you wish you would have known at the beginning of your engagement?
When we first got engaged, we focused on the venue and the photographer right away. We saved the band for later, and I wished I had known how quickly great bands can book up. We have a fabulous band, Simply Irresistible, but I wish we had booked them right away and avoided all of that stress!

What are you most looking forward to on your wedding day?
I know this sounds a bit cheesy, but more than anything, I’m looking forward to getting married! I think it’s important to remember that a wedding and a marriage are two different things. While I’m ecstatic about the wedding we have planned, in the end, a wedding is just a fabulous party. What I am most excited for are the vows that we will say to each other on that day, and the fact that I will have my best friend by my side for whatever life throws at me – the good and the bad. We’re incredibly lucky that both sets of our parents have been married for over 30 years, so we have great role models for a successful marriage!

Any plans for a honeymoon? Where do you want to go and what will you do?
This is one of the most exciting parts, since Nick and I LOVE to travel! We’ll be spending our honeymoon in the Seychelles, with a few days in Dubai on the way back. A few weeks after we got engaged, Nick took me out to dinner and presented me with a slideshow on his iPad for two different honeymoon itineraries. I decided that Seychelles and Dubai was the combination I was least likely to visit outside of a honeymoon. We are so excited to relax at a gorgeous hilltop resort and spend a week hopping around to all the islands to visit beaches, scuba dive, and enjoy delicious food!

Any advice you’d like to pass along to fellow brides?
At the beginning of our wedding planning, we all sat down and discussed what was most important to us. I wanted to make sure that Nick, my parents, and I all had the “final say” in the area of the wedding that was the most important to each of us. For Nick, that was the food, for my mom it was the calligraphy, invitations and desserts. For my dad it was the band, and for me it was the flowers and décor. It’s been nice to have set these priorities early and to have someone “in charge” of making the decisions for each of these categories.

Now it’s your turn to ask for advice – is there anything you’d like to poll the SW readers on?
Yes! We are really debating doing a first look. Nick and I both want to show respect for some of those “wedding traditions,” such as that moment when the doors open and the bride and groom see each other for the first time. However, the idea of a first look is starting to sound more appealing – we would have a chance to take beautiful photos next door to the St. Regis at the gardens at the Atlanta History Center, and more importantly, we could join cocktail hour and spend more time with our guests. What should we do? Is it more important to preserve that special tradition of not seeing each other until the ceremony and capture that moment around our friends and family, or should we have that moment in private and get the opportunity to take gorgeous photos outside and then have more time with our guests later? Help!

Thank you so much for joining us today, Jen! Readers, if you’d like to apply to be a Southern Bride of the Month, check out this post for all the details! If you’ve already emailed me, you’re still in the running for future months!

Congratulations Jen and Nick! Every couple is different when it comes to the first look. Myself and my husband are very very glad we did it. It gave us an opportunity to privately and quietly enjoy seeing each other for the first time without 225 people watching you. We exchanged gifts during this time and took some pretty emotional portraits. You can go to my Facebook album if you want to check them out! When I walked down the aisle, I actually didn’t even look at my husband right off because I was so distracted by all the faces! That is definitely something to consider. Seeing each other beforehand definitely did not take away from the emotions at all for either of us. We both bawled like a baby when we saw each other as I walked down the aisle! Whatever decision you make will be right for you as a couple! Good luck!

Absolutely adorable! I love the St. Regis Atlanta, it’s the most glamorous hotel in the city. Personally, I’m a traditional when it comes to the first look, but I will say the photos at Atlanta History Center/Swan House are possibly too good to pass up on!

Hi Jen! I just have to weigh in and say that having a first look definitely did not take away from the emotion at our ceremony, if that’s something that’s worrying you! It was a big concern of mine, and I’m so relieved (and happy!) with how everything worked out for us!

Congratulations Jen and Nick, The wedding weekend sounds divine, the St. Regis will be the icing on your wedding cake. What ever you decide will be just perfect for you, but if it were me I would go for the private first look. If anything it will fill you both with ever so many more emotions, you will remember this private tender time together forever. So go for the photo opportunities, you won’t regret it.

Congratulations, you’re wedding sounds fabulous! As far as the first look, I’d say do it but then again, I was a non-traditional bride, we both walked in together! Your honeymoon will be awesome, I just returned from touring over 13 amazing resorts this past Jany 2013-in. Eautigk seascgelles

Woops! Not sure what happened to my last comment. Seychelles are amazing! One word of caution, Dubai will be extremely hot in June, I would spend an overnight in Dubai then head to the Seychelles. Dubai is best when visited in the Spring, Fall or Winter. Have a great time!

Thanks for all the advice! After reading all the comments Nick and I have decided to do the first look and just reserved the gardens at the Atlanta History Center as our location for this special moment! Thanks to all the readers for your advice! It was super helpful!
