There are so many gorgeous Southern wedding ideas to be gleaned from Victoria + Michael’s celebration! Not the least of which, is how to still look graceful and elegant in the sweltering Southern summer heat. Step one, I gather? Choose a light-as-air Delphine Manivet gown. It also helps to have good-natured guests like those of V + M, who will still pull Christmas crackers and don crowns even in 95+ degree heat. Thanks to Amber Karson Events for planning, and Brian Tropiano for capturing, all of the gorgeous pink and gray details!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My family is British, and at Christmas, our table is set with Christmas crackers that contain a joke, a trinket and a paper crown that you pull apart with the person sitting next to or opposite you. We had our wonderful calligrapher write guests’ names on silver Christmas crackers and we used them as place settings. It was joyful to look around at dinner and see friends and family celebrating with paper crowns on their heads.
Describe your wedding cake: Michael and I really wanted pies at the wedding, so we decided to have a small cake, mainly for us to cut, and a number of our favorite pies (apple, blueberry and strawberry-rhubarb) for guests. At our tasting, we nearly changed our mind because the raspberry-cream cake that Windows Catering made us was amazing. We ended up sticking with the pies, though. However, shortly after the cake cutting we got pulled away to take photos and didn’t get to have more than a bite of cake. We’re planning to order some for our first anniversary to make up for it!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The late-breaking news that it wouldn’t just be hot, but that it would be the hottest day in the Washington area in over a decade. Having to adjust on the fly to make sure guests were as comfortable as possible at our outdoor wedding and that the ceremony could proceed as planned was a challenge. Thanks to our great wedding planners, who knew exactly how many industrial-sized fans we could plug into each outlet and who came up with the wonderful idea of handing out chilled towelettes, some late purchases of extra parasols and fans, and the great attitude of our guests, we managed.
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Brian Tropiano, our photographer, was amazing to work with and captured the particulars and the spirit of the wedding.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? It was so touching having our friends and family play such an important role in our ceremony. Good friends and family did readings and both Michael’s mother and one of the groomsmen and his girlfriend sang us songs.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are looking forward to a honeymoon early next year that will take us from winter in Washington to a romantic getaway in Paris followed by an island vacation in the Seychelles.

What a beautiful wedding!! I totally felt in love with one of the picture above and I was wondering who I should ask permission from to be able to use it on my website (which is under construction right now).
Please if you could get back to me to let me know, that would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you so much!

Classic bride Rachel shares her wedding at James Monroe’s Highland!

Rachel may have been surprised to find her wedding dress at her very first appointment, but from just a quick glimpse at her wedding photos and getting to know what matters most to her and Vince through her interview, I have to say, I’m not too surprised! I could have guessed that a classic lace gown with a full skirt and big bow would have been just her style, and sure enough, that’s what she ended up with.

These two did such a beautiful job weaving together timeless style and uniquely personal details for their Virginia wedding – I think y’all will love taking a peek. Thanks to Shannon Moffit for the lovely photos!

Tell us your love story in one sentence. Our blind coffee date turned into a 10-hour first date, and the rest was history.
Tell us all about the proposal! We recreated a camping and hiking trip we had taken two years before in the George Washington National Forest. We fell in love with this mountain because of the view at the top which consists of a grassy meadow surrounded by a 360° view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Vince surprised me with a proposal at the top of the mountain. He acted like he had to get something out of his first aid kit. I was so oblivious I was walking around taking pictures, but quickly realized what was happening. We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating in Charlottesville.

I never thought I would be one of those brides who would find her dress early, but I fell in love with my dress at Modern Trousseau Savannah during the very first appointment. After trying on several dresses and narrowing them down to two, I fell in LOVE with my custom dress when the stylist overlaid a lace top to bring everything I wanted to fruition. Lace top, long silk train, a bow, and a veil to bring it all together – this dress was truly the dress of my dreams!

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? Yes. As an aspiring wedding photographer, I really valued the extra time afforded for portraits and bridal party pictures before the ceremony. It also provided an intimate time for just the two of us to spend together before the craziness of the evening began. We were able to enjoy half of our cocktail hour with our friends and family because we decided to do a first look, and we are so happy we had that time to enjoy with our guests.
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We live in Washington, D.C. but fell in love with Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Being able to visit the wineries and go hiking and camping in the area is a nice escape from city life. When we found James Monroe’s Highland, we knew we had a very special venue for our ceremony and reception. This beautiful slice of land is nestled at the bottle of the Blue Ridge and offered several areas to utilize that really brought the vision for our wedding day to life.

Our guests were welcomed to Charlottesville with gift bags full of Virginia goodies, but we had to make one exception! Though we live in D.C. and adore Charlottesville, the bride is a Tar Heel and the groom is a Florida Gator, so we had to make sure we paid tribute to our roots! My sister made state-themed cookies for the welcome bags and they were a huge hit!

What else was Southern? We had a monogram made for our wedding which carried through the invitation suite and details during the wedding day. We also used a monogrammed Sasha Nicholas champagne bucket as our card repository. I wore my grandmother’s pearls as my something old. The boys looked dapper in their blue suits and green bow ties. Of course, we had a menu of upscale Southern cuisine with some of our favorite dishes such as barbecue, collard greens, and grits – all with a refined twist.

Vince and I tried to weave meaningful details throughout the day that truly represented us as a couple. When preparing for our marriage, we read the book “The Meaning of Marriage” by Timothy Keller. One of the main themes of the book is from 1 John 4 – that we love each other because Christ first loved us. We used this as our reading during the ceremony, and Vince had this engraved in my wedding band. Also, the book discussed marriage vows and how this promise is not only a covenant to our spouse, but part of our marriage covenant with Christ. As such, we used traditional vows in our ceremony. Our officiants were also very special to us. We chose our pastor and a close friend and mentor to co-lead the ceremony.

Our favorite detail had to be the al fresco dinner. The tables, chairs, place settings, and florals all came together in the most perfect intimate setting. One of our favorite memories of the day was at the end of cocktail hour when we were able to sneak away and take in the view of the tablescapes with the candles lit before guests were seated. We knew we wanted to have a family-style dinner with all of our closest friends and family around the table. Having that dinner in the special setting, watching the sunset by candlelight, was a dream that we will never forget. I also have to add that I LOVED the place card display. The wax seals had our wedding monogram engraved in them, and each table was named after a president since we were married at a former president’s estate :)

We had a string trio perform for our ceremony and reception. We chose Ben Fold’s “The Luckiest” as our first dance song for several reasons. It is such a beautiful song that is really deep and such a metaphor for true love when you really listen to the lyrics.

Two tiers of our wedding cake were chocolate, and the largest tier was called “Jazzy Razz,” lemon cake filled with raspberry puree topped with buttercream. The flavors offered something for everyone, those more traditional or adventurous. The flavors even tasted great together – who doesn’t love chocolate and raspberry?

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? One way we managed to cut costs for our wedding was sourcing vendors not directly in the hot wedding market that is Charlottesville. Finding reputable vendors that offered the quality and aesthetic we were looking for from nearby areas was one way of saving us a lot of money.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning a wedding? We would definitely recommend using vendors who already have a working relationship. It really helps the wedding day go so much more smoothly!! For example, our planner and photographer are friends and work together frequently, so coming together for our big day to manage timelines and ensure all of the details were perfectly captured made everything run seamlessly. We would definitely recommend working with a planner, and having the planner recommend vendors with which they have established relationships. Many brides don’t understand how much tension can happen behind the scenes when vendors are not on the same page, so this is definitely one way to help eliminate that stress!
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding? Our wedding band, E3, was such a huge hit. Formally known as “Everything,” they were a big hit in the ’90s with their song “Who’s Got the Hooch.” Rachel loves rosé and that was something that carried throughout the day. It was the star of her signature cocktail, “Virginia is for Lovers.” Vince’s favorite drink is a Pimm’s Cup, which we appropriately re-named “Vin’s Cup” :D

Being Southern Weddings, we naturally have a huge passion for Southern wedding traditions–everything from bourbon burying to cake pulling sets our hearts aflutter! But, there are wedding traditions from a lot more places than just the South, and I think it’s so much fun to learn about the ways different parts of the world celebrate couples entering married life. Lauren and Victor did a beautiful job of combining their historic Washington DC locale with a few beloved Japanese wedding traditions, like a stunning origami crane display at their reception. Serendipitously, their venue, The Anderson House, represented both sources of inspiration to a tee–don’t miss the story behind why they chose it below!

We’re so glad Bonnie Sen and our Blue Ribbon Vendor A. Dominick Events shared Lauren and Victor’s special day with us!

Finding my wedding dress was a lot of fun. I wanted to try on dresses with my mom and future mother-in-law, who live in Los Angeles and New York respectively. My first appointments were with my mom and two of my bridesmaids who live in LA and I tried on every type of style, just to get an idea of what I liked. I went to a couple more appointments at home in DC before I went to NY to try on dresses with my mother-in-law and another bridesmaid. By that point, I was pretty confident that I knew what I was looking for: something fit-and-flare with lace and beading that had straps and an open back. The very last dress I tried on fit all the criteria I was looking for, and when they put the veil on and I saw myself walking in the dress, we all knew that it was the one.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Walking down the aisle, I chose “Canon in D” by Pachelbel, which I had always wanted to walk down the aisle to, ever since I played it in my eighth grade chamber orchestra. Walking back up the aisle, we wanted something fun, and we love how pop music sounds on string instruments, so we chose Journey’s “Any Way You Want It.” For our first dance, we chose a version of “La Vie En Rose” which is a song that has always been special for us.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The participation of our friends and family throughout the day really made our wedding special. My mom walked me down the aisle, as my dad had passed away a year and a half before. One of Victor’s best friends and mom, who is a judge in NY, served as our officiants. Two of my bridesmaids helped us with a Japanese sake ritual called “San San Kudo” that we incorporated into the ceremony.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Our biggest challenge during planning was that we both have jobs that require a fair amount of international travel. During the time we were wedding planning, I had at least four major work trips, including a three-week trip to Africa that ended one month before the wedding, and Victor had a trip to Europe one week before the wedding. We were so happy that we had decided to have planners, and we could not have enjoyed ourselves as much as we did without their hard work. They helped us stay on track and achieve exactly what we were envisioning, and when the day arrived, we trusted them completely and were able to truly be in the moment.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We were looking for something that felt “DC” to us because all of our guests coming from New York and California. We liked the idea of a museum or historic building, and the Anderson House fit both of those. When we found out that the original owners had been diplomats and that Mr. Anderson had served as the ambassador to Japan in the early 1900s and brought back many beautiful antiques which decorated the venue, we knew it was perfect. My dad’s family is from Japan and I spent three years living there before I moved to DC, so the connection felt really special.

One of our major decorations was an installation of 1,000 paper cranes that I folded and strung (with help from my bridesmaids and several friends) as part of a Japanese tradition for good luck. The installation served as a beautiful backdrop for the evening.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our most memorable moments from the day came during the epic dance party during our reception. Victor’s favorite part of any wedding is the dancing and we knew that we wanted everyone to be tearing up the dance floor, but the reality exceeded our wildest dreams. Our DJ did a phenomenal job of weaving together a playlist that included everything from 90s hip hop, today’s top 40s, and salsa (which we had taken lessons for). But the true highlights of the night included seeing my mom on the dance floor (I’ve never seen her dance before!), cutting a rug with Victor’s uncle, and the group sing-along to the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” for the last two songs of the night.

For dessert, we had a two-tier cutting cake in funfetti (my favorite flavor) and cupcakes for our guests in red velvet, vanilla bean, and funfetti flavors.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met in September 2011 through a touch rugby league in Virginia. Victor played rugby in college so when he moved to DC, he wanted to get back into playing again. I was invited to play by some of my friends from grad school who played in the league and were trying to get more women to sign up. I’d played flag football a bit in college and figured it would be similar and fun, plus it could be a great way to meet a guy. We both noticed each other immediately and resolved to talk to each other independently, although Victor was able to make his move first, pretending to need to take a water break when I took one so that we could have a chance to talk. Chatting on the field led to a nonstop conversation on the metro back to DC, where both of us took the wrong metro stop just to be able to continue the conversation. When it came time to part ways, Victor asked for my number, and despite me accidentally giving him some mixed signals, he still called to ask me out on our first date. The rest is history!
Tell us all about the proposal! Victor told me that we were meeting friends for drinks, but on the way, he stopped in front of this Japanese restaurant that I’d always wanted to try and told me that we were having dinner there instead. After the most amazing dinner, we went home and he told me that since he had accidentally opened a Christmas present early, he had one for me to open early too. He had written a beautiful letter about our relationship, how far we had come, and his hopes for the future, and when I looked up from reading, he was getting down on one knee and asking if I wanted to do this!

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did write our own vows. Victor’s vows were sweet and funny. He was able to be both sentimental and silly and used a line from “Baby Got Back” to describe the first time he saw me, wondering what a girl with an “LA face and an Oakland booty” was doing at a rugby game.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My dress and all of my accessories were new, I had a handkerchief with the date and blue flowers embroidered on it, and I borrowed my parents’ small wedding photo album to carry to have a piece of my dad with me.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? While planning our wedding, we mostly looked forward to the marriage, as that would mean all of the craziness from the planning would be behind us. We looked forward to being able to come home after work and spending quality time together rather than constantly focusing on the decision making.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Start early, seek help if people offer it, respect your partner’s opinions, and compromise!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? Right now, we are enjoying just having our lives back to normal after all of the stress and excitement from the wedding, but we are both very excited with what the future may bring in terms of starting to see our family grow.
