Bride Lilly shares her Charleston plantation wedding to Bobby!

One of my favorite wedding details to check out is how the bride and groom choose to create a guest book! I’ve seen some pretty creative keepsakes, but never had I heard of Lilly and Bobby’s idea! “Instead of doing a typical guest book, we decided to collect post cards from places that we traveled throughout our engagement and have guests write little notes or advice on them. My mother-in-law has them all and she is sending them to us throughout the whole first year of our marriage. It is a great way to extend the wedding fun throughout the whole year and we love being reminded of all the fun memories when we get one in the mail!” I absolutely love this idea! Not only are the postcards themselves keepsakes from their travels, but now they are full of love and advice from their wedding guests!

I’m so thrilled to hand it off to Lilly to share all the meaningful details of their day, and I know you’ll especially love the wedding favor that is now a family tradition!

Thanks to Rach loves Troy for these lovely images!

When did y’all get married? April 15, 2017.
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 143.

Tell us the highlights of finding your wedding dress. I knew that I wanted to shop for my wedding dress at 1-2 places in Charlotte, NC and that I wanted to only bring my mom and my best friend to keep from having too many opinions. The first stop was Hayden Olivia and I thought it was such a beautiful spot – we felt so special! I tried on 7 or 8 dresses, but I knew I wanted a dress that had lace sleeves and I ended up choosing the 2nd or 3rd dress I tried on. I didn’t cry at first, but as soon as we put the veil on, I looked at my mom and started crying and we all knew it was the one!

My something new, borrowed, old, and blue: My something new was the earrings my husband gave me on our wedding day, my something borrowed was my mom’s pearl bracelet, my something old was the lace from my mom’s wedding dress that I wrapped around my bouquet, and my something blue was my mom’s garter from her own wedding.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We decided to do a first look in order to save time after the ceremony for celebrating and mingling with our guests that had come from near and far to share our special day with us. We are so happy that we did this because it really helped to calm our nerves and it even gave us some extra time to take a few cute pictures with our sweet dog!

What were some of the most meaningful or special parts of your ceremony? Did you write your own vows? (If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line?) Have any special readings, traditions, or participants? Our ceremony felt so magical because it was set in the middle of the Avenue of Oaks with all of this beautiful moss blowing in the wind – it was such a peaceful setting. We both felt it was really important to write our own vows so that we could really make them unique to us as a couple. My favorite line from his vows was: “I will forever be your biggest fan, supporting your passions and desires, because I know that the world is a better place with you by my side.” His favorite line from my vows was: “I promise to build a home and a family with you that is full of laughter, patience, acceptance, and love so that our children can witness firsthand how wonderful life can be if you have your best friend by your side.” My cousin also gave a beautiful reading of “The Art of Marriage” by Wilferd Arlan Peterson. We thought the words really served as important lessons and reminders of the type of marriage we wanted to create together.

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? Instead of doing a champagne toast for all of our guests, we brought a few bottles of champagne to have the bartenders hold on to just for us and our wedding party to use during the toasts. This was a great way to save money because often whenever the toasts start, people already have a drink in hand and the champagne goes to waste. But of course as the newlywed couple, we still wanted to have a little champagne on hand to celebrate!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? There were a few reasons that we thought Legare was the perfect spot for us. I am from North Carolina and Bobby is from New Hampshire, and we live in Boston now. I grew up vacationing in Charleston and it really felt like my home away from home. Once Bobby and I started dating, he would visit Charleston with me and he fell in love with it too. I knew I wanted to have a Southern wedding, and we wanted to share one of our favorite places with all of our friends and family. As soon as we saw Legare Waring House with its beautiful landscape and stunning oak trees, we knew we had found the perfect place!

What was your most memorable moment from your wedding day? My favorite memory is the feeling I felt when we were all seated at dinner and the light was just turning to dusk, and I saw all of our family and friends talking and laughing. Having my new husband by my side and seeing all of our favorite people in the same place getting to know one another was a feeling and a memory I will never forget.

Tell us your love story in one sentence. We met our freshman year at UNC on my birthday (of all nights) and our friendship eventually turned into something more because we were always seated next to each other in classes (both our names begin with H), and we also played on the same intramural soccer team. It was fate!
Tell us all about the proposal! Bobby proposed on a beautiful fall day in October 2015 when we were in town for UNC’s homecoming football weekend, which we’ve been going to every year since we graduated. We live in Boston now, and I had actually flown down early on Friday to meet up with a friend and have lunch on campus. I didn’t think he was arriving until later that night because he had been gone all week on a work trip. My friend and I were walking around campus and as we approached the Old Well, he came up behind me and surprised me! He proposed in front of the Old Well and I can barely remember anything he said because I was so surprised. The best part about it (other than the proposal) was that my parents and a lot of our friends were in town so we had the whole weekend to celebrate with them!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. The songs that we used for the ceremony and first dances were really important to me because I wanted them all to have sentimental value. For the seating of the grandmothers and mothers, the musicians played “Your Song” by Elton John. I loved this choice because my dad used to play that song for my mom on the piano when I was growing up. I walked down the aisle to “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol (a personal favorite) and for the recessional we chose “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles because it had a great lively beat to it which indicated to our guests at the end of the ceremony that it was time to celebrate! For our first dance, we danced to “You and I” by John Legend which my husband suggested and I absolutely loved. And for the father-daughter dance, we picked “My Girl” by the Temptations. I’ve been dancing with my dad to that song all my life after seeing “Father of the Bride” with him and it only made sense to dance to it together on our wedding day!
What did you serve for your wedding cake or dessert? Why did you choose it? For our wedding cake, we wanted something classic, Southern, and a little unique. One of my favorite Southern desserts is banana pudding so when our cake baker offered that flavor as one of our choices, we had to say yes! It had real bananas and vanilla wafers inside it and was absolutely delicious. And the presentation of the cake could not have been more lovely with its classic white icing and beautiful sugar magnolia blooms. It was perfection!
What was your favorite detail from your wedding? My favorite detail was the favors for our guests. My mom baked homemade pecan chewies for each of our guests with the pecans from my great-uncle’s pecan farm. This was a nod to my great-grandmother who gave my mom and dad homemade pecan chewies on their wedding day as they were leaving for their honeymoon “so that they wouldn’t go hungry.” So we wanted to pass that same sentiment and tradition on to our guests!
What was your favorite thing about wedding planning? My favorite thing about wedding planning was all the special moments I got to share with my parents and my in-laws. Putting on my wedding dress for the first time with my mom, practicing the first dance with my dad, and making welcome bags with my mother-in-law were truly wonderful memories that I will always treasure. My husband and I also took dance lessons and it was a great way for us to make time as a couple during our busy week and just have fun together!
What was the hardest part about planning your wedding? The hardest part of planning our wedding was having to do it from afar. Since we live in Boston and the wedding was in Charleston, SC, we really had to rely on our planner and our family to help us stay organized and get through all of the logistics. We even picked out our venue by having my parents visit it and take videos – we didn’t see it in person until 10 months into the planning process!
What advice would you give to someone currently planning a wedding? It is very easy to get caught up in the details of planning a wedding and forget why you’re getting married in the first place. Make time for yourself, your family, and your significant other because those are the people that make this special time so memorable. Your wedding day goes by in the blink of an eye, and what you end up remembering the most are the moments you shared with all of the people you love and care about – not the little details that go into planning a wedding.

Bride Kate shares her wintery Austin wedding!

Friends, I’m delighted to introduce you to today’s bride, Kate! Reading through her interview, it seems like a lot of things fell into place effortlessly for her wintery Austin wedding to Damon — she found her dress after visiting one store, and they fell in love with their venue the minute they walked in the door. Makes sense for a couple whose relationship seems equally easy (“We are two native Austinites who found each other and were instantly inseparable,” she says when asked about their love story!)

But Kate is also clear about the value her vendors, especially her wedding planner, brought to the table: “I did not think I was going to enjoy wedding planning at all. Thankfully, I had the most wonderful planner, Emily Leach, who made me feel at ease about every decision and was so helpful throughout the entire process. I could not have done it without her!” Together, these two created something truly beautiful. (And not without help from Damon, who built the arch they were married under – keep reading for more!)

Thanks to Sophie Epton for these lovely photos!

Tell us your love story in one sentence. We are two native Austinites who found each other and were instantly inseparable.
Tell us all about the proposal! Damon took me out to Hamilton Pool at the crack of dawn when no one else was there. I thought we were just going for a hike and then he got down on one knee!
When did y’all get married? January 14, 2017.
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150.

Tell us the highlights of finding your wedding dress. I only went to one store, and when I tried the dress on I instantly knew it was the right one. The ladies from Linyage just happened to be at Unbridaled and overheard me talking about what I wanted. They had the top just for me! They pulled it out of their car, and I tried it on and fell in love.
Did you decide to do a first look? Damon is very traditional and wanted his first time seeing me to be walking down the aisle.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? We fell in love with the feel of The Union on Eighth the minute we walked in. It had a warm feel while still being a bit industrial. It is just a short walk away from the Georgetown town square which is so charming as well.
What were some of the most meaningful or special parts of your ceremony? My best friend’s father is a judge and was able to marry us. It was very nice to have someone who knew us to be able to do that.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding? My favorite detail about the wedding was our arch. Damon didn’t want to have any run-of-the-mill arch for us to get married under, so he built one. It came out better than I could have ever imagined, and Clementine Floral just made it over the top with the incredible flowers.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. I had always wanted to walk down the aisle to “That Dress Looks Nice on You” by Sufjan Stevens. I had thought, though, that this wouldn’t be possible because we hired a fiddler and guitar player for our ceremony, and they didn’t know the song. As I started walking down the aisle, I heard the song playing. Damon had gotten the guys to learn the song! It was such a special part of the ceremony to me, and I will always remember it.

What was Southern about your wedding? Our wedding was Southern in that it was a family affair. We wanted all of our big families to be there celebrating with us. The farm tables allowed everyone to sit as a family and enjoy the night.
What was the hardest part about planning your wedding? The budget was the hardest part, even when you think you have a high enough budget it still seems to need to be more.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000

What did you serve for your wedding cake or dessert? We had a traditional bridal cake, but Damon doesn’t really like cake and his favorite dessert is root beer floats. So we had a root beer float bar! The peached tortilla worked with Amy’s Ice Cream and it was so fun and delicious.

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We used Paperless Post for our invitations and just used Boarding School Collective for our day-of paper products. It saved us a quite a bit on invitations. And, we still loved the invitations we got from Paperless Post!
What was your most memorable moment from your wedding day? It is hard to pick just one moment. We left, and in the car we just looked at each other and said that it was the most fun night of our lives. Our venders just put the night over the top for us. We had so much fun taking pictures with Sophie and Jordan. Emily and her team made everything so easy for us that we didn’t have to worry about a thing. The Peached Tortilla gave us INCREDIBLE food. And all we had to do was dance the night away with our family and friends.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning a wedding? My biggest advice would be get a wedding planner if you can fit it into the budget. I would have never made it through without Emily. It was the best money we spent on the wedding.

This is a lovely tribute to a beautiful day! Thank you Southern Weddings! I’m Kate’s mom and hadn’t heard the story of the song…I guess in all the busyness she never told me. Her vendors were THE BEST. Sophie and her husband not only caught the beauty of the day for us, but they themselves were so much fun.

It was an honor to be part of this wedding, and so fun to surprise Kate with the processional that Damon had requested on her behalf!

Bride Lindsey shares her spring wedding at the St. Regis in Buckhead!

I’ve read a whole lot of brides’ responses to our questions about their wedding days, but this is the very first time I’ve seen another bride have the same “most memorable moment” of her wedding day as I did! Lindsey said, “I think for the both of us it would be when we were in the getaway car after the reception. We both just could not stop smiling and talking about the whole day. It was just a quiet moment for us to look and each other and basically say, “did that just happen?!” It was such a flawless day, and I don’t think we expected our reality to completely exceed our high hopes and expectations.”

Our most important mission at Southern Weddings is to help brides create marriages more beautiful than their weddings, and that first post-party conversation as husband and wife is the sweet start to the really good part: living life together as an inseparable pair! And while Lindsey and Kevin’s wedding was absolutely stunning, I have a feeling their longstanding relationship is a whole lot better! That being said, you need to see their floral arch…

What was Southern about your wedding? Our welcome gifts included southern Georgia staples: GA pecans, peach jam, etc. It might be more common now, but we had a groom’s cake that was a yeti cooler with stickers of everything we love, including our high school and college logos. We also had a large bridal party (22 total!).

Tell us the highlights of finding your wedding dress. I ended up being drawn to a wedding dress style that I always loved but didn’t think I would end up actually getting. I was deciding between two separate dresses that were somewhat similar, and I was extremely torn. The consultant who was helping me took me away from my family in the dress that she thought I was leaning towards and had me walk down a long hallway towards a mirror and told me to picture Kevin watching me walk down the aisle. It only took about a few steps for me to know. I then screamed, “This is my dress!” and my family on the other side of the wall all gasped and started cheering. It was definitely a moment I will never forget.

When did y’all get married? April 22, 2017.
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 250.

We are both Catholic and wanted to get married in a church, and Cathedral of Christ the King was not only out current church, but in my opinion, it is also the most beautiful cathedral in Atlanta. I had dreamed of having my wedding in the St. Regis for a long time, and it was the only venue I toured. My family always stayed in the St. Regis, and every time I went, I just thought it was so beautiful. They have so much to offer besides beyond just the gorgeous venue. The hospitality there is truly incredible. They went above and beyond to make every little detail of the night perfect.

What were some of the most meaningful or special parts of your ceremony? The priest that married us has been Kevin’s priest since he was in middle school, so we were very close to him. The sermon he gave was very special to us and we both remember it very well. For me, the most meaningful part would be hearing Kevin say his vows. It’s a very surreal moment. And obviously walking down the aisle is something I will truly never forget!

Our love story is very simple because of how easy it has always been for us. We were high school sweethearts and each other’s first love, and we truly just get stronger as the time goes on.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding? This is SO hard for me to answer, because the whole day was a dream for me. It took a lot of thought, but I think if I HAD to pick one thing it would be the tree we had in our cocktail hour that served as our guest book. We both went to Auburn and a tradition at Auburn is to roll the Tree downtown after an Auburn win. So we put a tree in our venue with streamers hanging down, and guests would sign a card and hang it on the tree. We felt our marriage was a win, so it only felt fitting to include a rolled tree as part of our day.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Our first dance song was “You are the Best Thing” by Ray Lamontagne. We chose this because we wanted a happy and fun dance. I have truly never experienced such a feeling of pure joy as I did on our wedding day, so that song was perfect to keep that feeling going not only on that day but also to bring that feeling back every time we hear it.

We served a cake layered with red velvet and vanilla cake with champagne frosting. For me, it came down to the frosting. I love cream cheese frosting so the red velvet was an easy decision, but anyone who knows me knows that champagne is one of my obsessions. So when they said they had a vanilla cake with champagne frosting I was sold!

Tell us all about the proposal! After Kevin graduated, we had always talked about the holidays being the time we would get engaged. My sister, Lauren, had just gotten engaged at the beginning of July, so in my mind there was no way we would be getting engaged anytime soon. My birthday is July 29th, and Kevin’s is August 7th, so we are only 9 days apart. We would often do something with our families to celebrate both of our birthdays together. On Sunday, July 26th, our families had planned a brunch to celebrate our birthdays. That morning Kevin mentioned that he would take my dog, Paisley, out to go to the bathroom while I was getting ready. When I finally went downstairs about 20 minutes after Kevin took the dog out, I asked my mom where Kevin was and she said he was still outside with Paisley. I looked at the back door to see what was taking so long, and that is where I saw the start of the rose petals. When I went outside I immediately started crying in disbelief and Paisley came running to me in a collar that said “Will you marry me?” and a dress that said, “Say Yes Mommy.” There was a path of rose petals leading to where Kevin was. When Kevin asked me to marry him, the first thing I could think to do while he was on one knee, after saying yes, of course, was to tell him to stay there so I could take a picture. I said “I have been waiting so long for this moment, I don’t want to forget it!” After the proposal, Kevin’s family came out and revealed that they were hiding in the bathroom the whole time with my family. We celebrated with gifts and champagne and then surprised me with brunch at the St. Regis, which was my dream wedding venue and where their reception for our wedding would be.
Did you decide to do a first look? I did not do a first look because I always dreamed of the moment that my future husband would see me walk down the aisle and I wanted that to be the first time Kevin saw me as a bride to be that moment. We both agreed that would be more special for the both of us.
What was your favorite thing about wedding planning? All of it! I honestly couldn’t pick just one thing. I love planning, and we had two years to plan our wedding which was by choice so we didn’t stress about anything. We had so much time to plan that it made it a completely stress-free process. The reception design I think was my favorite, I loved being able to design the entire room from scratch.
What was the hardest part about planning your wedding? Because of how much time we had, it was really not a hard process at all. I think the only thing I can think of that made it hard was that a lot of the vendors we went to kept telling us we were too early and to come back closer to the wedding!
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? If you were to ask my dad, he would say we didn’t! It did feel like staying on budget was an almost impossible task. But some ways that we saved money were by saving on things leading up to the wedding like the showers. We ended up doing those events at our house and tried to use all our budget on the actual wedding rather than the events surrounding it.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning a wedding? I honestly would say to have a long engagement. I had dreamt about planning a wedding for a long time, so I wanted to enjoy every step of the process. I can truly say that I did because of how much time we had. We never had to rush with anything. We had time to research, think about it, change our minds, and most importantly, enjoy and celebrate just being engaged!
