Combining an outdoor ceremony flanked with the beautiful backdrop of Texas Hill Country together with an indoor reception of decked with beautiful florals, Amanda and Jordan blended the best of both worlds for Texas in July. Blue Ribbon Vendor Bristol Lane created a romantic, natural look with blooms of deep reds and pinks with lots of texture that perfectly complimented Pecan Springs Ranch’s already lovely aesthetic. But the detail I could not love more? Amanda said that there are very few times she has ever felt more loved or supported than the moment they wanted into their reception. “It was the first time I really got to take in all of the excited, loving faces of our friends and family.”

Thanks to Feather & Twine for sending along Amanda and Jordan’s sweet Texas wedding!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Jordan and I went to Texas A&M and worked at the Student Rec Center together. We were friends from the start, and I always loved Jordan’s friendly, down-to-earth nature. In the fall of 2012, we went on our first “date” to our boss’ church. After church, the congregation gathered to eat together, so we brought a dessert that we made the night before. I love to cook, but that dinner was a bit of a fiasco. Of course, as a proud Italian, I made penne vodka and it was so spicy that Jordan could not even touch the pasta. In typical Jordan fashion, he was extremely nice about it and pretended he liked it. The dessert we made for church was also a mess. We tried to double the recipe and the chocolate mousse that was supposed to be fluffy turned out to be more of a dense paste (yum!). Despite our cooking being a bust, Jordan and I had so much fun together, constantly laughing and doing equally awkward things. From there, our relationship steadily grew, we became more confident about cooking together, endured long-distance, exchanged countless letters, and got engaged at the Grand Canyon in April 2015!
Tell us all about the proposal! A few of our favorite things include camping, the mountains, and quality friend time, so we were more than excited for our trip to the Grand Canyon! Jordan and I didn’t have a lot planned for the trip except for hiking and camping with our friends. On day two of our trip, the four of us hiked down the South Kaibab Trail. I honestly didn’t suspect that we were going to get engaged. Jordan and I had discussed it, but I had no timeline or suspicions. We arrived at an amazing lookout and thought it was a good time to take a break and eat our lunch. Before we headed out, Jordan asked if we could take one last picture (which should have tipped me off, because he never asks to take pictures). Andrew and Sarah assumed their roles as photographers and when I turned around, Jordan was on his knee. When he asked me to marry him, I was more overwhelmed and shocked than anything. I am pretty positive the only thing I said was “Are you joking??” Eventually, I came to my senses and said yes! The day could not have been more perfect.
When did y’all get married? July 2, 2016
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? About 185
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. My best friend Ellen had recently moved to Nashville, so I was planning a trip to go visit her. Shortly after getting engaged, I started following The Dress Theory on Instagram and fell in love with their unique style and small, intimate stores. My mom and I flew to Nashville and had a wonderful weekend exploring the city. We visited the Dress Theory Nashville location, and it was the most relaxed, special time! We worked with such a kind and genuine stylist, and we found my dress in just a short amount of time. It definitely was a different style than I anticipated, but I loved it right away.
Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We decided against it! We always imagined our first look being while we were at other ends of the aisle, so we kept it that way.
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Pecan Springs Ranch was the very first venue we toured, and we fell in love with it! They have beautiful property and great options for indoor or outdoor ceremony sites. Given that it was Texas in July, we thought an outdoor ceremony and an indoor reception would be the best of both worlds.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did, with help from some friends! A friend from college had some of the most beautiful, thoughtful vows, so she offered to share them with us. We used inspiration from their vows and incorporated parts that were special for us. We are so grateful for the wisdom and sincerity she passed on in her vows, and they will forever hold a special place in our hearts.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Our dear friends (matron of honor, Sarah, and best man, Ryan) read a scripture from a verse that meant a lot to us, Philippians 2: 1-11. The verse exemplified how we want to model our relationship and our marriage after Christ.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We had a guitarist (Aaron Goldfarb) and violinist (James Anderson) play during our ceremony and cocktail hour, so we wanted to take advantage of their talents. Sharing music and going to concerts has always been a big part of our relationship, so choosing the songs was honestly one of our favorite parts. It was fun and challenging trying to pick the songs that were significant to us and also set the tone for our ceremony. I could go on and on about why we chose each song, but I’ll be brief! :)
The Head and the Heart – “Down in the Valley” (Wedding party entry)
Johnnyswim – “Take the World” (Processional)
“Come Thou Fount” (Communion)
Stevie Wonder – “For Once in My Life” (Recessional)
Alabama Shakes – “I Found You” (First Dance)
Describe your wedding flowers. We chose deep reds and pinks, with a variety of textures and greenery. We wanted the overall feel to be romantic and natural, so Bristol Lane used a combination of ranunculus, peonies, roses, and more. Everything was beautiful, from the arbor piece to the bouquets, and our flower girl was beyond precious with her flower crown!
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. It was unreal! Green Lily is an organic baker who made our wedding cake and assorted mini desserts. We chose a triple berry cobbler cake; it was a Southern vanilla cake with triple berry cobbler filling and vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream. If only we could eat it every day! In lieu of a groom’s cake, we selected an assortment of some of our favorite (mini) desserts: chocolate chip cookies, cannoli (for my Italian family, of course), donuts, and peach cobbler shots. They were fantastic!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: This isn’t necessarily a detail or design element, but one of our favorite parts of the wedding was our adorable ring bearers and flower girl. They are our cousin’s children, and we have watched them grow up into the most precious kids. Cooper, Cambelle, and Grey are the best of friends, and they talked about their “jobs” during the ceremony for months. Cambelle was GLOWING while she was walking down the aisle and told us it was the best day of her life! Beyond adorable.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! In a lot of ways, we weren’t overly concerned with traditions, but it just so happened that the blue bracelet I wore was my mom’s, so I checked off something borrowed and blue!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? My mom found out that Pecan Springs Ranch had beer donkeys, and she fell in love. Opie and Sassy were quite a big hit with our guests during the cocktail hour! Being a Texas wedding in the summer, it was almost too fitting to have our ceremony and reception in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? We had a fairly long engagement, so we had plenty of time to not only plan our wedding, but also invest in our future marriage. We went to premarital counseling, and not surprisingly, learned even more about each other and important areas where we needed to grow and mature. It was so vital for us to learn from a couple who was Christ-centered and had endless wisdom to pass on.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? For us, the main challenge was the guest list. We wanted to include as many close friends and family as possible, but didn’t want to have an overwhelmingly big wedding. Finding that right balance of including our closest friends and family was critical. We definitely had some tough decisions when forming our final guest list, but everything worked out in the end.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? While I always appreciate a beautiful wedding, I am a realist, so I was constantly trying to cut cost whenever possible. Having a wedding planner who can keep you on track is extremely helpful as well. We had coffee and jam as our favors, and we were able to save some money on each of the items. We gave our guests Third Coast coffee, as they are our favorite local Austin roasters! We bought the coffee wholesale and stamped small coffee bags, which turned out really cute. My uncle, a man of many talents (think retired Houston police officer turned baker!) makes wonderful jam. The custom stickers, glass jars, and jam were all very affordable and relatively easy to assemble.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Truly, all of our vendors were FANTASTIC. I can’t thank them enough for making our day so special. None of it would have been possible without our planner, Ellen of Westcott Weddings; she is simply wonderful. In addition, we absolutely adored and worked closely with our photographers (Feather and Twine) and videographer (Henry Weddings). They went above and beyond.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There were a couple! I chose to have my mom and dad walk me down the aisle, and there’s nothing quite like making the walk towards your groom. I have never enjoyed being the center of attention, so I guessed that I would be extremely nervous. Instead, I felt a great sense of peace while walking with my parents, and seeing Jordan’s ear-to-ear smile was unforgettable. The second most memorable moment was walking into our reception. It was the first time I really got to take in all of the excited, loving faces of our friends and family. Very few times have I ever felt more loved or supported!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? You will hear this a thousand times, but truly enjoy this time and appreciate every minute! There are so many details to look over, which can make it easy to get overwhelmed. At the end of the day, you get to marry your best friend, and that is what counts. From a planning perspective, if something is a big stressor to you, really examine if it needs to be part of your wedding.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? With no more wedding planning to take care of (although that was a blast!), we’re enjoying more free time together to do what we love: travel, go to concerts, trying lots of new food, and creating a home together.

Yes, I am a traditional gal through and through. But, even more than that, I absolutely adore when couples make their wedding day their own through sweet details that tell their personal story. If you don’t identify with all the traditions, that’s great! Your wedding should be a celebration of what means the most to you and your future husband. Sammi and Branden did exactly that, and this traditional girl is loving it! After meeting on Twitter, they spent five months getting to know each other virtually before meeting in person. Then, after 140 airplane rides to be together over three years, they said “I do: in front of 30 of their closest friends and family in the co-working space where they both work. Together, they prioritized the traditions that were important to them, and celebrated the uniqueness of their relationship. Of course, this had to include a post-ceremony dance party to the song that always makes Sammi laugh: “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston.

Big hugs to Maria Lamb for sharing this super fun day with us!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met on Twitter… A mutual friend retweeted Sammi. Branden followed her. Sammi followed back. Fast forward a year, Sammi reached out to Branden via Facebook message asking him to grab coffee, if he ever made it to Nashville. After hundreds of hours talking over Facebook, iMessage, and FaceTime while Sammi was studying in Europe and Branden in Portland, they finally met in person five months later on January 17th, 2012 in the Nashville airport. Over the course of the next three years, they would ride over 140 airplanes to be together.
Tell us all about the proposal! He proposed… On the weekend of our third anniversary, Branden showed up a day earlier than expected for a normal weekend trip. Sammi was on her way to dinner with friends when their GPS got them “lost” at Percy Warner Park, the place where Branden and Sammi had their first date. Then suddenly, Branden walked up to the car and surprised her with flowers. They grabbed hands and walked on the trails out by the lake, where Branden got down on one knee and Sammi said “yes.”
When did y’all get married? November 15, 2015
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 30
Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? Yes, and we were so glad we did. It helped us calm our nerves by being able to have some alone and quiet time before the ceremony. It was the most memorable part of our day. And we loved having extra time to shoot some portraits.
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We got married in our co-working office, WELD Nashville. We are both creative freelancers. The space and the community there has played a huge role in our story.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did! Our best friend made the books for us and we wrote out our one thousand-ish word vows to each other. Our favorite section is about our commitment to being faithful to each other: “I PROMISE TO BE FAITHFUL TO YOU. I’ll face your flaws, your temporary traits and habits, head on. I won’t shrink. I won’t flee. I won’t seek someone better. I will work to be humble enough to repent when I fall short. And when you fall short, I will work to forgive you quickly and fully; through Grace, I won’t keep score. I will allow you to change, celebrate your growth, and love you all the same. We are in this for life and there’s beauty in knowing nothing can shake that.”
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had readings from Donald Miller’s “Scary Close,” Brene Brown’s “Rising Strong,” and John Mark Comer’s “Loveology.”
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We chose to play “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston right after our first kiss and pronouncement. This is Sammi’s favorite song and the song Branden would always play as they drove to the airport together while dating long-distance to keep Sammi smiling. Immediately after the pronouncement, the entire wedding party of 30 began to dance too.
Describe your wedding flowers. Because we wanted all of our guests to feel a part of the ceremony, every gal got a bouquet and every guy got a boutonniere. Our florist and planner teamed up and made a gorgeous wreath that hung up above the circle of the 30 of us gathered around. There were lots of pink roses and greenery.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We’re huge doughnut fans so we had doughnuts from Five Daughters Bakery.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: How intimate the ceremony and reception was. We loved having our closest people with us for our special day; the people we know will be there to support us through all of the highs and lows of our life together.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? Nope. Though we dated for 3.5 years, we were engaged for three months which left little time for wedding planning. Our goal with our wedding was to choose which traditions were meaningful to us and to make those a priority. Sammi writes more about this idea here: http://www.sammiharvey.co/blog/2016/8/22/why-you-dont-need-a-flower-girl-in-your-wedding
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Sammi is a Tennessee native. We got married in the city where we both now live, Nashville. We had our favorite BBQ (Edley’s) during our reception.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? Marriage counseling.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Not letting other people persuade us to follow conventional wedding traditions. We wanted to personalize the wedding to celebrate the uniqueness of our relationship, and I’m so glad we followed our gut. We wouldn’t have changed a thing.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? Less than $10,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? Small guest list. Discounted venue because we were members of the co-working space. Ceremony and reception in the same room. No DJ, alcohol, or required outfits for wedding party. Low-key honeymoon to Charleston, SC.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We loved having Maria Lamb as our wedding photographer. She has been a longtime friend and someone who just has a special talent for making her clients feel comfortable and confident. I think it’s so important to choose a photographer who makes you feel beautiful and at peace on your special day. The photographs come out SO much better this way and you have a memorable and fun experience while shooting.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Don’t sweat the little things. Prioritize what traditions are important to you as a couple and don’t be afraid to go against the grain with something new. Personalize your wedding to celebrate the uniqueness of your relationship and you will have zero regrets about your wedding.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? In less than one year of marriage, we have visited four of six continents together! Not sure if we’ll make it to Antarctica, but we’re planning a trip to Africa before our anniversary in November.

The SW ladies are big fans of Southern traditions, and we love hearing how real couples incorporate them into their big day! Liz and Scott buried a bottle of bourbon before their ceremony to keep the rain away, but the weather had a different plan! When they had to use a tent her outdoor ceremony at the last minute, Liz’s mother and her friends were able to turn the rain plan into a work of art using trees, plants and flowers from her parents’ mountain home. It may not have been part of the original plan, but I think we can all agree when you scroll down that it was the perfect backdrop for Liz and Scott’s “I Do’s.”

No amount of flowers, however, could take away from how effortlessly beautiful Liz looked in her lace applique gown and matching veil. Liz, not only were you a beautiful bride, but you were a beautiful birthday girl as well!

Big SW hugs to Blue Ribbon Vendor Julia Wade for sharing this sweet day with us!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met freshman year of college at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, eleven years before we would finally become girlfriend and boyfriend. During our freshman year, we grew to be great friends and were frequently each other’s date to events like cocktails and formals, but we never formally “dated.” We remained friends through college and afterwards, and there was always a lingering “what if” question. When Scott graduated from business school, he moved to NYC, where I was living. After more than a handful of fateful run-ins on the street, subway platforms, etc…we decided to grab a drink together. We’ve been inseparable since then!
Tell us all about the proposal! After work on Thursday, August 20, we went for a bike ride on the West Side Highway in New York. We decided to take a break at one of the piers; it was there that Scott pulled out the ring and started to propose, only to be interrupted by an unaware lady who was cleaning the area! With headphones in and music blaring, she had no idea that she had just interrupted him mid-proposal. When she finally walked away, we burst out laughing and he finished asking. It was a perfect New York moment.
When did y’all get married? May 21, 2016 (my birthday!)
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 260
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I searched high and low for a wedding dress in New York, but unfortunately, never found anything. My sister, who lives in Oregon, was also engaged at the time, so my mom and I flew out to Portland to spend a weekend wedding planning and dress shopping with her. At her first appointment, she found her dress, so she encouraged me to use the remaining time at her appointment to look for mine. I ended up finding the one there as well! It was a pretty surreal experience to be standing in a store in Portland next to my sister in our future wedding dresses!
Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did not do a first look. We wanted the first moment we saw each other to be captured in front of our friends and family at the ceremony.
What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? We knew we wanted to get married in North Carolina and loved the idea of getting married at a place filled with activities for our guests, so the mountains were a natural fit. People enjoyed golf, hiking, fishing, etc. throughout the weekend. It also helped that my parents have a home at Grandfather Mountain and Scott grew up only a few hours away in Charlotte.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had two readings at the wedding. The first, Song of Solomon 2:10-13, was from the Bible and was read by one of my oldest childhood friends, Tim Rees. The second was a poem called “Wedding Song” by John G. C. Brainard–we found it in a wedding book that was given to the my maternal great-grandmother on her wedding day in 1915–101 years earlier!
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Scott’s a music lover, so we spent a lot of time thinking about the music for our wedding. We wanted to keep things pretty classic and traditional, but we did spice things up a little bit too. Our recessional was to Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed.” We wanted our first dance to be romantic and slow, as well as something that our band could knock out of the park, so we picked Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald’s “Dream a Little Dream.” It was perfect with our big band full of horns! My favorite, though, may have been the father/daughter dance. My dad and I love to dance together and wanted to do something fun, so we danced to the Fine Young Cannibals’ “She Drives Me Crazy”–it was a total hit. The crowd loved it, and we were smiling and laughing and catching our breath from the fast pace!
Describe your wedding flowers. Our wedding flowers were gorgeous! My mother is a fantastic gardener with an encyclopedic knowledge of plants and flowers, so I really leaned on her to help! We wanted them to be a little whimsical and natural, and not too polished. We used a mix of white peonies, ivory garden roses, green and white parrot tulips, berries, delphinium, anemone, thistle, and even lavender. Our ceremony was supposed to be outside, but due to weather, we had to use a tent. Luckily, with the help of my mom and her friends, we were able to turn a traditional, last-minute white tent into a thing of beauty. My parents were just about to re-landscape their entire yard at their mountain house, so we used the trees, plants, and flowers they had intended to use as decor. We had FULL trees and rhododendron plants inside the tent! It was gorgeous and so special to know that their yard is now filled with the plants that were used to decorate our ceremony. The rose petals used by the flower girl and thrown by friends and family during the recessional were all collected from my mother’s garden in Chapel Hill.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We ended up having three cake options! Our wedding cake was chocolate with a buttercream frosting. Our second cake was a funfetti birthday cake with sparkler candles for me! The third option was carrot cake pops.
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! I was able to knock out my borrowed, blue, and old in one go. My godmother lent me a family ring that has been in her family for generations. It’s a beautiful art deco sapphire and diamond cocktail ring. My shoes, dress, and everything else were new!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We buried a bottle of bourbon about six months before our wedding. I can’t believe we were actually able to find it on our wedding day, but it definitely worked! The weather report was calling for five inches of rain, but we only experienced a few little showers in the morning, with gorgeous sunshine the rest of the afternoon and evening.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We loved all of our vendors. We used local vendors for absolutely everything, from cake, to flowers, to catering, to makeup and hair. I loved supporting the people in the town where we were married. Besides, locals know best! My favorite vendor was P.S. Plum Social, which is owned and operated by Clarence Mills. She created all of our paper goods, from invites to menu cards, ceremony programs, our wedding logo, our welcome packets, and much, much more. She hand-paints everything and does incredible custom designs!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Our ceremony. We spent a lot of time planning the actual ceremony and it was beyond what I could ever have imagined.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Relax and don’t regret or second guess the decisions you make. It will be beautiful no matter what!
