It is with great delight that I’m kicking off sharing our V9 print weddings here on the blog! While this is the first wedding that appeared in our latest issue, it was actually the last one we accepted–it took place in September, after our deadline had come and gone! However, when the planner and florist extraordinaire, Jacin Fitzgerald, told us it was one of her favorite weddings she had ever planned, and that longtime SW friend Ryan Ray (who photographed my wedding!) was going to be capturing every magical moment and detail, we knew we had to squeeze it in to V9. And how could we not? Katie and Ryan’s Pippin Hill celebration perfectly blended their coastal roots and French countryside inspiration with undeniably Southern flair and hospitality. There are too many charming details in this day to count, but there’s no question that our office favorite is the cocktail hour “bow tie bar”–Katie’s mama expertly handmade a array of bow ties so that every gent in attendance could trade in his neck tie for the evening!

How did you prepare for marriage while planning your wedding? Ryan and I were long distance for the entire year before our wedding, only ending the distance a couple of weeks before our wedding. We would travel most weekends to meet up in the middle of our two cities (Knoxville, Tennessee and Jackson, Mississippi), which meant we spent many weekends in beautiful Birmingham, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee. Living far apart while being engaged ended up being such a blessing in disguise. We spent the entire year so appreciative of every minute we could spend together. We cherished our weekend visits, and our year of long distance helped us remember, even after six years of being together, just how much we love and need each other. As we didn’t get much time to be together, we never let the wedding planning monopolize our time. Instead, we left almost all of our weekends wedding planning-free, and we used our time together to plan for our marriage and life together by truly appreciating every little moment we had with each other.

Jacin got my floral vision absolutely perfectly. I wanted a lush and loose bouquet. We chose lots of champagne, cream, and blush-colored flowers, and the bridesmaids had pops of color in their bouquets. It was so fun choosing the flowers with Jacin. She actually met up with me in Nashville one weekend and set up an entire mock tablescape, including centerpiece flowers, for me to see it in person before the big day. I got to look at all the flowers she used, tell her which ones I loved and which ones I didn’t, all while she swapped in other flowers and colors in front of me. It was such a special, interactive process, and I had so much fun planning it with her!

My wedding dress was a Vera Wang gown. My shopping experience was extremely special. I traveled up to New York City with my mom, my two sisters-in-law (who were my maids of honor), my mother-in-law, and one of my best friends (who was a bridesmaid). We went to two different bridal shops, but the dress I chose was actually the third dress I tried on! I knew immediately that it was the one because as soon as I put it on, everyone in my group suddenly jumped up, ran over to me, and started crying and touching the dress. I still hadn’t even seen what I looked like in it at that point! I turned around to see the mirror, and my heart immediately knew this dress was the one. I still tried on other dresses and went to my other appointment, but we all knew I had found my dress, and I went back to Mark Ingram Atelier and bought it that very day. I’m so happy I was able to find it with some of the people who mean the most to me by my side! We had pieces of my mom’s wedding dress sewn into mine, which was extremely special to me. That was my “something old.” I also wore my mom’s engagement ring as my something borrowed, my wedding heels were my something blue, and my wedding dress was my something new.

Describe your bridesmaids’ dresses. How did you choose them? I knew as soon as I got engaged that I wanted to have our colors be different shades of blue, and for the girls to all wear different styles of dresses–I absolutely love that look. I ordered swatches of gowns from a few different dress designers in order to figure out exactly which shades I would use, and then went to see them in person once I narrowed it down. I ended up finding four different Jenny Yoo blue colors that looked gorgeous together, which made the entire decision making process simple!
What did the groom and groomsmen wear? The groomsmen all wore deep blue suits with a variety of different blue gingham and seersucker bow ties and suspenders. We wanted the suits to be a lighter shade of blue than navy, and we were so happy that we were able to find a perfect shade. Four of the groomsmen, plus Ryan, were in a different wedding together earlier in the summer, and that groom decided to use the same suits for his wedding so that they only had to purchase one suit and would get multiple uses out of it. It ended up working out perfectly!

Favorite detail of the wedding: We actually both have the same favorite detail of the wedding! The ceremony was absolutely perfect to both of us–the mountains and setting sun in the background and the rustic screen doors framing us as we declared our love for each other made for an absolutely perfect scene.

We got married in Charlottesville, Virginia on September 10, 2016. I’m from Massachusetts and Ryan is from California, so we knew that at least half of our family would need to travel a great distance for our wedding, no matter where it was. We decided we would love to get married at a place that held special meaning to both of us as a couple, rather than just where one of us is from originally. Pippin Hill is our favorite winery in Charlottesville, and its views are absolutely breathtaking. We thought it was the perfect representation of the beauty of this special spot in the country where most of our guests had never been before, so we knew almost immediately after getting engaged that we would love to get married there. Fall is our favorite time in Charlottesville, so a September wedding was a no-brainer for us. As everyone was traveling from out of town, we decided to invite all guests to a welcome dinner the night before our wedding, and to watch polo the day after the wedding. Our guests all decided to make a long weekend out of our wedding, and we had almost 100 percent attendance at our welcome dinner!

Tell us a bit about the wedding ceremony. What part was most special to you? Did you include any special readings? Our wedding ceremony was better than I could have ever dreamed. My father walked me down the aisle to a string version of “All I Want Is You” by U2, his favorite band. Our dear friend from college officiated wonderfully, and he chose some very special poems and quotes to incorporate that resonated deeply with us. We had a ring warming ceremony, where we passed around our wedding bands through the guests for them to send their love and well wishes into before passing them on to the person next to them. We also had one of the bridesmaids sing the song “Halo” with the string trio. It was so special to have her sing during our ceremony. While she was singing, we invited our immediate families up to join us in lighting a unity candle to symbolize the blending of our two families. Another one of my favorite parts of the ceremony was that two of my little nieces walked down the aisle as flower girls. They got a little diverted during their walk, which made everyone laugh, but they eventually made it down the aisle, cuter than ever.

Did you write your own vows? We wrote our own vows and didn’t share them with each other beforehand, making it truly special hearing them for the first time at the ceremony. We followed the same pattern so our vows would have a similar feel to them. We each said “I am here because…,” “I love you because…,” and “I promise to…” with three reasons for each of them. We ended up having surprisingly similar reasons for each of them! Ryan was pretty emotional during his vows, which ensured there was not a dry eye in the group. I was almost jumping with excitement when Ryan put my wedding bands on my finger. So many guests came up afterwards to tell me how obvious my pure happiness and joy about being Ryan’s wife was!

We had our cocktail hour outside, overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains just as the sun was setting. To say the views were spectacular is an understatement. We had a bluegrass band playing to start off the night’s merriment, and our signature cocktails were served in fun coupe glasses and blue vintage goblets. One of my favorite details from the wedding was from the cocktail hour: my mom made bow ties in a variety of different patterns for all of the guys in attendance, which we had hanging at a “Trade your necktie for a bow tie” station. All of the guys ended up wearing bow ties for the entire reception, which was really fun to see. My mom also made a beautiful-smelling lavender sachet for each woman in attendance. She worked tirelessly on the sachets and bow ties, and everyone talked about how beautiful they were all night long! It meant the world to me to have such a personal touch.

What was the design inspiration for your wedding? Why was this design special to you as a couple? Ryan and I had traveled to the French countryside after we took the bar exam following law school graduation, and we absolutely fell in love with the rustic and lush feel in all of the little towns we visited. We wanted to replicate this feeling in our wedding, and our planner, Jacin, absolutely nailed it. It could not have been more perfect.

Our seating chart was one of Jacin’s most creative touches. We had Chelsea Petaja, who did all of our calligraphy and paper design, hand-letter each guest’s name, and Southern Fried Paper collaborated with I Do Linens to print the names on a beautiful linen cloth, which was then hung from a mantel. It was so different from anything we had ever seen, and completely fit our French countryside rustic theme. The reception decor was better than I had ever dreamed. Lush and overflowing flowers formed the centerpieces, along with small potted herbs and single flower stems in small glass vases, lots of blue candles, and votives. Each place setting had a vintage plate in a different blue pattern, and a hand-torn menu in the same blue marbled paper we used in our invite suite, programs, and welcome letters. They also had vintage silverware and individual salt and pepper cellars. One of our favorite touches was also at every seat: individual macarons in mini cake holders with each person’s name on them. They were so cute, and super delicious!

From Jacin: We wanted to evoke the feeling of walking through a lush garden in France, with beautiful antique style roses and hydrangea, accented with flowering herbs (the flowering oregano was a favorite) and simple statement bud vases. We incorporated different garden roses, from distant drums to iceberg, along with limelight hydrangea, clematis, freshly foraged porcelain vine with the most pristine pale blueberries, ranunculus, celosia, hops, smilax, veronica, pieris, gardenia, lavender, rosemary, café au lait, and sweet Nathalie dahlias and lisianthus.

From Katie: There were so many memorable parts of our reception! I absolutely loved my dance with my dad. Ryan’s dance with his mom was also a huge hit, since they called up all other mothers and sons at the reception to join them. It was such a sweet sight! I also purchased a cowbell for my brother (who always finds himself on the stage with the band at every wedding he attends), which was hilarious to watch him play all night. The speeches at the reception were all so touching. My dad brought out a letter I wrote him when I was 12 years old, which I never expected him to still have. His speech was equal parts sentimental and funny–it was perfect. We also just really loved how no one stopped dancing the entire night. Our band was absolutely incredible! It was awesome how our photographer, Ryan Ray, was right in the middle of the dance floor the whole night, encouraging people to dance more. He was a blast, and we had the best night of our lives. From Ryan: It’s so hard to narrow down the highlights of the reception to just a few moments. It was so much fun dancing with all of our family and friends all night. The dancing never stopped! The end of the night was also awesome, when the band played “Hey Jude” and everyone circled around the dance floor, singing it loudly to us.

Tell us about your grand exit. We did a sparkler exit with a second line from the band while they played “When the Saints Go Marching In.” It was such a perfect way to end an incredible wedding weekend.

Don’t miss Katie and Ryan’s highlights film by Shaking Hands Productions below!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met in the spring of our freshman year of college through mutual friends. We immediately hit it off and became close friends. I even went out to California to visit Ryan for a week that summer, and from that point on, we were best friends and inseparable! I knew right away that Ryan and I would make a perfect couple, but it took Ryan a little longer to realize it. After a couple of years of being best friends, we finally decided to make it official and date during our senior year of college. Five years later, Ryan made me the happiest girl alive when he proposed!
Describe the proposal: We graduated from law school in May 2015 and immediately went on a vacation with my family to Kiawah Island, South Carolina. I had initially thought Ryan was going to propose at some point over our graduation weekend, and when he didn’t, I thought he was holding off for a little while longer. Little did I know, he had planned all along to propose while we were on vacation with my family, because he knew how important it was to me to be able to celebrate with my family afterwards. One evening, my family decided to go eat at our favorite restaurant of all time, Husk in Charleston. We went into Charleston early to walk along the water. Ryan and I had been to Charleston one time before, and on that trip, we had sat on a bench at Waterfront Park, talking about our future. When my family was still walking around and my little nieces were distracted looking at the horse-drawn carriages, Ryan suggested we slip away for a minute to check out that bench again. At this point, my heart started beating like crazy as it dawned on me why Ryan would want to sneak me away from my family. We sat on the same bench we had sat on three years earlier, and once again, we talked about our future. Ryan pulled out a book he made that had pictures of us from the past nine years and a list of twenty reasons why he loves me. At the end of the book–which I could barely read at that point through all the tears–it said he just had one question to ask me, and when I looked up, he was kneeling in front of me, crying as well, and asked me the greatest question I had ever heard. It was so special to then be able to walk to our favorite restaurant, where my family was anxiously waiting outside, and celebrate with them for the rest of the night. It was the proposal of my dreams!
How many guests attended your wedding? 151
Tell us a bit about your first dance. From Ryan: Our first dance was to the Zac Brown Band’s “You Easy.” It’s a fun, upbeat song that suits our personalities. It was so fun swinging my new wife all around the dance floor with our friends and family cheering on.
Tell us about your wedding cake or sweets. Neither of us are big dessert people, so in lieu of a cake, we decided to serve one of Ryan’s favorite childhood treats from growing up in the San Francisco area: Its-It Ice Cream treats. They had a variety of ice cream flavors in between two oatmeal cookies, and the entire thing is dipped in chocolate–our guests raved about them! We also served late night grilled cheeses and peach milkshakes, which were incredible.
What was the funniest moment? Even though my sisters-in-law were my matrons of honor, my two older brothers actually gave the “maid of honor” speech, which was really special to me. They brought up every embarrassing moment from my childhood, and had me in tears from laughing so much.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are starting our new jobs at law firms in Washington D.C., decorating the home we just purchased together, and are just enjoying living in the same city again!

Katie and Ryan were truly THE sweetest couple and it’s so fun to relive their day on SW today. Fun fact – my parents helped with this wedding and my mom practiced tying bow ties all summer before manning the bow tie station to help the gents :)

In our editorial meeting this week, we were chatting about how for many couples, rain on their wedding day often ends up playing a big role in some of their favorite memories. This just so happens to be true for Meagan and Chris! Despite being terrified of the possibility of rain on their wedding weekend at Oldfield Club, when it actually rained just as their outdoor ceremony started, Meagan experienced one of her favorite moments. With her best girlfriends, lots of laughter, and a bit of champagne, not even the rain could dampen their spirits. After a few minutes, the sky cleared and their ceremony restarted. To honor her late father, Meagan and Chris were married by her cousin in a ceremony that was not only special, but full of joy–exactly what her father would have wanted. Don’t miss the funny way her cousin closed the ceremony!

Big hugs to Ashley Sewell for sharing this Lowcountry wedding!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. My sister and one of my bridesmaids went shopping with me in New York. We went to one salon at a larger department store and I had one of the first appointments of the day. When we got to the door, there were a few other brides there also waiting for their appointments. When they unlocked the door, it was like a Black Friday sale at Target–people were speed-walking and throwing elbows. I don’t think I ever really recovered from that initial experience and didn’t love any of the dresses. We then headed over to Mark Ingram and the experience was completely different. The consultant was wonderful and gave her opinion in a way that I truly appreciated. My sister and friend got to sit in the dressing area and everything just felt so much more relaxed. They were having a Peter Langner trunk show that day and when I put on one of his dresses, it just felt right. My friend told me that she knew she had found her dress because after she tried it on, she didn’t want to take it off. When I tried on this dress, I got that same feeling and knew that I had found exactly what I wanted. Peter Langner was actually in the salon that day, and after getting his approval and a photo with him and Mark Ingram, I knew that I was done with the dress decision.

Chris and I both wanted to get married outside and it just so happened that the time had changed the Sunday before our wedding, so it was going to get dark early. In order to have a ceremony and a reception at a time that we both agreed on, we knew that photos would have to happen before the ceremony. We also wanted to spend as much time as possible with our guests and didn’t want to be off taking photos during cocktail hour! Ashley Seawell was so helpful talking through all the details with us, and I really trusted her judgment when it came to timing and logistics for the first look. The actual first look was such an amazing moment and gave Chris and me the rare opportunity to spend a couple minutes alone just enjoying the day.

We used traditional vows for our ceremony but took a more untraditional approach for our officiant, as my cousin married us. He works in advertising and is, quite frankly, hysterical. My dad had passed away about ten years ago, and when he and my uncle would get together, it was like being at a comedy show. I knew that I wanted to have a ceremony that he would have enjoyed, because he appreciated a good laugh better than most people. My uncle walked me down the aisle and my cousin performed a ceremony that literally every single person enjoyed–we knew that we wanted our ceremony to be special, but we also wanted to laugh and enjoy this incredibly joyful moment! He even ended it with “and now, I have officially married my cousin!”

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? I grew up in Texas and went to the University of Georgia, so I have a soft spot in my heart for the South. Chris grew up in Virginia Beach and spends most of his life fishing or thinking about fishing. We knew that we wanted to do a quasi-destination wedding that was in the US, but also knew that we needed to be on the water, as Chris had always wanted to go fishing with his groomsmen the weekend of the wedding. I started doing a lot of research and actually spent a ton of time on the Southern Weddings website researching venues. When I saw Oldfield, I immediately knew that was the spot. It is beautiful, on the water, has the most amazing people that work there, and had the ability to house our entire wedding party onsite, something that was very important to us given the amount of time and money people from across the globe were spending to get to our wedding. We really wanted to take all the thinking out of it once people got there. We used all of the venues at Oldfield for our events and it worked out perfectly. They all have a unique charm to them and it made each event seem different!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My amazing mother-in-law spent hours and hours creating the most amazing oyster garland. After we got engaged, I remember showing her a photo of an oyster garland and telling her about how cool I thought that was. She was able to bring the image to life! She collected oyster shells from oyster roasts, restaurants, etc. and then cleaned them, drilled holes in them, and strung them together to create this amazing garland. In addition to the garland, she made oyster candle holders and wreaths that were so beautiful and were perfect for our Lowcountry vibe. I’m currently trying to convince her to open a shop on Etsy. I also might have bought an oyster chandelier in the craziness of wedding planning. I’ll hang that in our house one day, right?

We used Minette Rushing for our wedding cake and the groom’s cake. For the groom’s cake, I surprised Chris at our rehearsal dinner with a cake in the shape of a marlin. It was such a fun little detail, and the actual cake was to die for. Toward the end of the welcome dinner party on Friday night, they were running low on the cake, but they didn’t want to cut the marlin cake. Well, my mom, who is a true sweet lover, was just not okay with only getting a couple slices of cake that night. She stuck her finger in the marlin and looked up and said, “now you can cut it.” We were all dying laughing, and of course, were excited that we all had more cake to eat! The wedding cake was perfect as well. Minette created a cake that was exactly what I wanted. All of this goes back to my theme of trust the experts. I think that Chris and I are most looking forward to our one-year anniversary so we can eat the cake top tier, because we didn’t get any at the wedding!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Chris and I both attended business school at the University of Virginia. Chris graduated two years before I did, but I never met him through recruiting or other alumni events while I was in school. He moved to New York after graduation and I then also landed a job there. I was on a walk with one of my friends from school right before I moved to the city when she told me that I should meet Chris when I moved. I didn’t really think much about it, as I was mentally preparing for a career in investment banking and a move to a completely new city. The night I moved to New York, I went out to dinner with some friends and we decided to stop by a bar called Village Tavern for a couple of drinks. I guess you could say the stars were aligned because Chris and his friends had the same idea. The people we were with knew each other and we all started talking. Chris and I were introduced, really hit it off, and a couple of weeks later, went out on our first date. I didn’t think it was possible, but I literally met my husband the day I moved to New York!
Tell us all about the proposal! My family is from Texas and we used to celebrate Thanksgiving in Mexico. Chris and I decided that it would be fun to honor that tradition and celebrate Christmas in Mexico with both of our families. On the Friday before we were scheduled to leave, I had just gotten home from a canned food drive for work and was busy packing. The apartment was rather clean and Chris looked nice, but I didn’t think too much about it, as we had dinner plans with our friends–plans that I thought I could get out of because I was super tired and couldn’t imagine having a big night before we got on our 6 A.M. flight for Mexico. I was in our bedroom packing when Chris asked for me to come help him with something. I stood there for a second thinking that maybe if I didn’t immediately respond, he’d figure it out. Well, he called for me again and I walked into the living room to find him in front of our little Christmas tree on one knee with maybe the most terrified look on his face! He asked me to marry him in our 600 square foot apartment with Frank Sinatra singing “Christmas Waltz” in the background, and it was perfect. We went to eat at Little Owl, one of our favorite restaurants, and spent the night celebrating with friends–and still made our 6 am flight to Mexico!
When did y’all get married? November 7, 2015
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 175
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had two readings during our ceremony. One was n excerpt from “Gift From the Sea” by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and the other was a quote from John Lennon: “When I was five years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy.’ They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” The John Lennon quote is written in chalk on the wall of one of our favorite coffee shops in Hatteras, North Carolina. Chris spent most of his life going on fishing trips in Hatteras and we were glad that we were able to work in a special ode to that in our ceremony.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? In his speech on Friday night, Chris said that I challenge him in ways that he would have never expected. One of those ways was enrolling us in dancing lessons before the wedding. I think I had this vision of us executing a perfect ballroom dance routine and Chris loving every minute of dancing practice. Neither of those things happened, but dancing lessons started to be a special activity for us. We were obviously not great at actually dancing, but through those lessons and the dinners that we treated ourselves to after the lessons, we spent a lot of time learning about how we work together and talking about expectations that we both had regarding our marriage. It started out as something we dreaded, and after it was all over, we both agreed that we should always try and make it a priority to find time for these special activities that we could do together to continue to learn about each other and grow as a couple. We are currently taking golf lessons and we might be better dancers!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? I had obviously been stalking the weather and when I saw that it was going to be 80 degrees the weekend of our wedding, I thought to myself, I’m so glad I bought pashminas for all the female guests for the ceremony and have an espresso/coffee truck coming to serve guests warm drinks during our reception! I also noticed a little chance of rain around the time of our ceremony. Fast forward to our ceremony and I remember standing by the side of the house, looking up at the sky right before I was supposed to walk down the aisle, and telling my uncle that it was going to rain. The bridesmaids had all walked down the aisle and everyone was in their seats and I could feel the rain drops (my uncle continued to just say, “it’s not raining”). Ten seconds later, the sky completely opened up, so I ran into the house and sat in the bathroom as the entire wedding party and all the guests also ran into the house to take cover. My bridesmaids came into the bathroom with me, along with a couple of glasses of champagne. The champagne was opened and all the guests had a little pre-ceremony cocktail hour as we waited for the rain to stop. I sat in the bathroom with my bridesmaids and we just laughed and had an amazing time. Thirty minutes later, the storm passed and the sky looked beautiful, so we just picked up right where we left off, and Chris still cried when I walked down the aisle! During the planning stages, I was terrified of the possibility that it might rain that weekend, but when it actually happened, it turned out to be one of my most favorite memories of the day!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? You are most likely not a wedding planner and do not host parties for 100+ people on a regular basis. Trust the experts and listen to your vendors. Also, my biggest regret is not having a video of the speeches at our rehearsal dinner and of our ceremony. Even if you don’t have a videographer, make sure you capture these moments on video!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? Chris and I just rescued an epileptic Pomeranian that we named Kirby Smart, after the new Georgia coach. We are still loving living in New York and are just excited about continuing this crazy journey together!

It’s wild how much can happen in a year, isn’t it? The first time we laid eyes on Ali and Nicholas’ wedding was just about a year ago, and the dreamy Florida sunshine, tropical-colored blooms, and delightful citrus details are just as welcome of a sight this January as they were then! This was actually the very first wedding we accepted for our most recent edition, Volume 9, and it certainly got our collection of gorgeous real Southern weddings for the magazine off on the right foot. Ali and Nicholas chose the Florida Keys (Nicholas’ hometown and a beloved vacation spot for the St. Louis couple) as the destination for their wedding, and with the help of Kristin Ashley Events, planned an old world Florida-inspired celebration that included an emotional walk down the aisle, family heirlooms on display, and a boho-meets-modern look that perfectly blended Ali and Nicholas’ unique styles.

We’re so glad Clary Pfeiffer shared this beautiful day with us for V9!

Tell us all the basics of your wedding! Why did you choose these things? Did any of these details hold special meaning for you as a couple? We decided to get married in the Florida Keys. It is home to Nick, and has become one of our favorite places to visit. We loved the idea of sharing that magic with our closest friends and family, so we found a beautiful spot in Islamorada called The Caribbean Resort. It really had that old world Florida feel, plus many of our guests were able to stay on the resort!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? I had a dress emergency three weeks before the wedding. The dress I had originally chosen was not fitting properly, and alterations were not working, so I took a chance and bought a backup dress online. It came three days before I left for Florida. It ended up being absolutely perfect, and felt like it was made for me.
Describe your bridesmaids’ dresses. How did you choose them? I knew I wanted simple, elegant, ivory bridesmaid dresses, and that I wanted everyone to choose their own dress and style so they were comfortable. We went to Bella Bridesmaid in St. Louis and had a wonderful experience. Everyone chose from two different dress lines and we incorporated three colors to mix it up. I loved the way it turned out. Everyone looked stunning!

What songs did you use for your ceremony? I walked down the aisle to Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.” He is my favorite artist, and that song it just so beautiful!
What was the most memorable or touching moment of your wedding day? For both of us, I think it was when I walked down the aisle and we saw each other for the first time. We were both crying. It was very emotional and special.

Did you do a first look? Why or why not? If so, tell us about it! Nick was very insistent that he wanted to see me for the first time that day when I was walking down the aisle. It was such a touching, special moment, so I was glad we waited.
Tell us a bit about the wedding ceremony. What part was most special to you? Did you include any special readings? We wanted our ceremony to be simple and sentimental. Many of our loved ones have passed or were not able to be there, so we started off with a moment of silence, thinking of them. We were fortunate to have our brother-in-law, Hank, marry us. Both he and Nick’s sister, Jane, are very rooted in their faith, and made it very special.

Did you have a cocktail hour? If so, what was it like? Our sunset cocktail hour was inspired by the Cuban culture in the Florida Keys. We had freshly muddled mojitos and cigars from a local cigar shop. He rolls his own cigars and they are wonderful!

What was the design inspiration for your wedding? Why was this design special to you as a couple? I love most things bohemian, but I didn’t want our wedding to be overly vintage. Nick really likes modern, clean lines, so we mixed the two and it ended up being perfect!

Tell us about your wedding flowers. How did you choose them? What did you love about them? I wanted very organic florals with pinks and oranges to complement the Florida locale. I absolutely love flowers, and wanted the wedding to feel like a garden. My favorite part was probably the bed of flowers above our head table.

What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Have faith that it will all come together in the end! Also, make sure you take a moment that day to look around and soak it all in with your new spouse!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met through work. After meeting my parents for the first time while we were still acquaintances, Nick remembers thinking “they will be my in-laws someday.” He was right!
Tell us about the proposal! We had close friends visiting us that weekend, so we had made plans to show them around. On Saturday, we had brunch and headed to the Arch grounds. I had never actually spent any time at the Arch, but it is something you shouldn’t miss when visiting St. Louis, so it wasn’t suspicious when Nick decided we should also do the helicopter tour. When we got to the banks of the Mississippi (where the helipad is), it was closed. Little did I know, our family and friends were watching from a large bus, only steps away. After walking around for a bit and trying to find an alternative plan, Nick grabbed my hand and pointed down the steps of the arch where our family and friends were holding a sign that said ‘ALI, WILL YOU MARRY ME?” What an amazing feeling! He had an agenda for the day that included a party bus, lunch, a stop at one of our favorite bars in Soulard, and a suite at the Cardinals game! I couldn’t believe all of the work and time he put into organizing this unforgettable day! The best part is that we were able to share it with our amazing friends, family, and even our dog, Arlo!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Blissful, unforgettable, and FUN!
How many guests attended your wedding? 140
Bride’s favorite detail of the wedding: Probably my floral crown. My mom wore one when she married my dad, and I had always wanted to wear one on my wedding day. It was so romantic and beautiful; I didn’t want to take it off. I even went swimming with it on after the reception! I also loved having Ski Soda in our welcome bags. It is made in my hometown, and it was a fun way to incorporate a little piece of home. It is also DELICIOUS!
Were there any family traditions you included in the ceremony? My godmother, Sharon, passed away when I was very young. She had written an article about my grandmother’s wedding band, and it is a tradition in our family to display it at weddings. They are both very close to my heart, so it was special to honor them in that way.
What kind of food did you serve at your reception? Our wedding was planned around the sunset. After it set, everyone sat down for surf and turf. One of our favorite things to do when we are in the Keys is grill Florida lobster tail, so we were so excited to share it with our guests. We paired it with steak and mashed potatoes to give our Midwest friends and family a taste of home as well.
Tell us about your wedding cake or sweets. Key lime pie. Enough said!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are extremely blessed to have each other, and wonderful family and friends. We are renovating our first home together, and look forward to what the future holds! Hopefully lots of children and dogs!
