LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort

by in on

Around these offices fall has officially started, so even though I’m now a Floridian, I’ve packed away my white pants and pulled out my boots and cozy sweaters. In the Winchester household, this past weekend marks not only the start of college football and the end of summer, but the beginning of the busiest season for our family (Go Heels, and now, Knights!). A few weeks before our schedules ramped up, KPW and I snuck away to the Florida Gulf coast for a little R&R. We hadn’t had a chance to explore this part of the state since relocating, so I jumped at the chance to stay at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort.

The resort, decorated in the “Old Florida” style, is situated on the white sandy Gulf Coast beach. We happened to visit during turtle season, so during check-in, the resort staff asked us to make sure our curtains were pulled at night (the bright lights can confuse the baby sea turtles who use the moonlight to find the ocean!). We happily obliged, although I was disappointed that we didn’t witness a hatching during our visit.

Our room was cheerful, with bright and colorful décor, and we had a great view of the beach and the Gulf Lawn from our balcony. The Gulf Lawn is a great grass location situated right next to beach, perfect for bridal luncheons or cocktail hour after getting married in the sand at sunset! During our visit we lucked into being able to peek down and see a darling couple exchange vows on the sand and then move to the lawn to snap photos and swap hugs with their families.

On our first night, we dined al fresco at the Baleen Restaurant and managed to catch a jaw-dropping sunset while enjoying fresh seafood and mouth-watering goat cheese mashed potatoes. (My favorite!) Not wanting our night to end, we moseyed down to the beachfront fire pits to enjoy the amazing weather. Is there anything better than roasting marshmallows beachside? I was glad the hotel had kits available to make all my beachside s’mores dreams come true.

A visit to the spa for a massage, followed by an afternoon on the beach, was a perfect way to spend our Saturday. While I love soaking up the rays, having the chance to sit under an umbrella and order lunch beachside (the staff was so friendly and helpful) was heavenly.

Before leaving, we walked across the street to explore the other LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort event space. Can’t you imagine having a cocktail hour out on this veranda? What lucky brides!

Our little adventure to the west coast of Florida was just what we needed to prepare for our busy fall. We loved the great hospitality and service, and I think I could have moved into one of the poolside cabanas. Whether you’re looking for a great destination wedding location, a fun honeymoon spot, or an anniversary getaway, pack your bags and head south to the sunny LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort!
