Southern Weddings

Author: Katharine

Since 2010 is all about “firsts” for Southern Weddings, we thought a fun and festive wedding from Australia (yes, really!) would be the perfect addition to our January line-up.  Can we all agree that Lee + Cameron’s wedding, photographed by the Image is Found, looks like one of the most fun weddings ever?  Bubbles?  Confetti?  Face painting?!  Lovely loose floral arrangements (designed by the couple’s dear friend, Kylie Short) were the perfect complement to the natural beauty of the Riverwood Downs where the Aussie natives swapped handwritten vows.  If you think the ceremony looks fun, I know you’ll go nuts over their reception.  (Hint: there’s a giant trampoline and, yes, the bride did jump on it in her handmade wedding gown!)

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.   We were lucky enough to be introduced to each other by a mutual friend, Angela. We met one night over a glass of red wine while having a carpet picnic at Cam’s house. It turned out we lived less then 800 meters from each other. Cam mentioned he went for a bike ride some afternoons, I kept my eye out for him but I never saw him.  A couple of months later, Angela invited me to a New Year’s Eve party at none other than Cam’s house. The fireworks started well before midnight, sometime between the champagne and bad karaoke. I really thought he didn’t like me, but it turned out he was just shy! From then on, we have been inseparable.
Describe the proposal. In a word, romantic!  Cam decided well before our six-week trip around Europe that he would propose to me while we were away and had a ring made prior to our departure. He had previously spoken to both of my parents and had told his parents what he was up to. Being a traditional kind of guy, he asked my father for permission, and then it was just a matter of time to put his secret plan into action! We were in Vienna visiting some friends at the start of our trip. He had originally planned to propose at a special spot in Prague, but later said he was having too much fun to wait. Apparently, he though I was onto him, as I was supposedly acting strangely, and the ring was burning a hole in his pocket! Thankfully, he had the help of our two friends to make it all happen. We were looking at jewelry in a shop window and I made a comment that I would never put a ring “like that” on my finger. Little did I know that Cam had a ring in his pocket and, that within three hours he would be down on one knee in a beautiful Viennese square surrounded by stunning old buildings and nervously asking me to marry him. We then celebrated late into the night with our friends.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: FUN, memorable and unique.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding? A wedding festival that reflected not only our personalities, but also the way we live and experience life everyday.
What was your favorite design element of your big day? The Paper lanterns hung with colorful party lights with fairy lights strung in between.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: My favorite details were my bridal flowers and the trampoline.  Cam’s favorites were the three legs of ham he had smoked the day before for everyone to enjoy. The music was also really fantastic! We had an acoustic guitar, a three-piece jazz band and then a local singer/musician to entertain us all, well into the night.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: It was really about trying to describe what was in my head to my wonderful mother-in-law, who was kind enough to make my dress for me. It was beautiful and exactly as I imagined it.

What brand are the shoes? I’ve been looking for flats (so hard to find ones that are fancy enough) and I LOVE these!

  2. avatar Nikki reply

I agree with Amy. I NEED NEED NEED these shoes. The whole wedding is beautiful – but those shoes – swoon. I have been looking for something exactly like that – any idea where she got them?

  3. avatar Steph reply

What a beautiful and fun wedding! I am in love with the shoes, especially! Where did the bride get them? Or did she make them?

How adorable to ask the parent’s permission before he proposed.

We’re all about weddings, but let’s pause just for a moment to indulge in five examples of superb Southern Christmas decorating…

Clockwise from top left:

1. A corncob wreath?  Yes, please.  It will last a whole heck of a lot longer than its evergreen cousin in the Southern heat.

2. Since we don’t really need the warmth of a fire down South, how about dressing up the grates with a wreath and some faux snow?  It’s almost enough to warm my little New England heart.

3. New Southern is all about relaxed, natural style, and we think the loose, just-gathered-from-the-forest look of these arrangements is a perfect example of that.

4. Likewise, keep the exterior of your house classic and classy with simple evergreen swags and small wreaths on each window sash.  The light glowing from within is the only other decoration, needed, no?

5. Classic, simple, natural, chic — I could go on.  But you already know how we feel about this sort of thing.

And now back to weddings!

Love Christmas Vacation!! My favorite lines/quote::Clark: Since this is Aunt Bethany’s 80th Christmas, I think she should lead us in the saying of Grace. Aunt Bethany: [turns to Lewis] What, dear? Nora Griswold: Grace! Aunt Bethany: Grace? She passed away thirty years ago. Uncle Lewis: They want you to say Grace. [Bethany shakes her head in confusion] Uncle Lewis: The BLESSING! Aunt Bethany: [they all pose for prayer] I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands/ One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. I love that you are giving this movie away! My fiance’s family is big on movie quotes, and all of their favorites are fresh in my mind after laughing at their antics quoting Christmas Vacation at the dinner table this past Thanksgiving! There are so many good ones, but this one is just so classic and has got to be my favorite line from Clark:"Where do you think you’re going? Nobody’s leaving. Nobody’s walking out on this fun, old-fashioned family Christmas. No, no. We’re all in this together. This is a full-blown, four-alarm holiday emergency here. We’re gonna press on, and we’re gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye. And when Santa squeezes his fat white ass down that chimney tonight, he’s gonna find the jolliest bunch of assholes this side of the nuthouse. "

  24. avatar Katherine C. reply

Clark: "Hey kids, I heard on the news that an airline pilot spotted Santa’s sleigh on its way in from New York City."Uncle Eddie: "You serious, Clark?"What a great Christmas movie!!

  25. avatar Stephanie reply

What about "The Family Stone"? :) I think that’s a great one, too!

  26. avatar Kimberly Spence reply

Clark: Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I’d like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is! Hallelujah! Holy shit! Where’s the Tylenol? Who has ever felt this way about their boss?? Can I get an "amen!"
