Southern Weddings

Monthly Archives: January 2017

It’s wild how much can happen in a year, isn’t it? The first time we laid eyes on Ali and Nicholas’ wedding was just about a year ago, and the dreamy Florida sunshine, tropical-colored blooms, and delightful citrus details are just as welcome of a sight this January as they were then! This was actually the very first wedding we accepted for our most recent edition, Volume 9, and it certainly got our collection of gorgeous real Southern weddings for the magazine off on the right foot. Ali and Nicholas chose the Florida Keys (Nicholas’ hometown and a beloved vacation spot for the St. Louis couple) as the destination for their wedding, and with the help of Kristin Ashley Events, planned an old world Florida-inspired celebration that included an emotional walk down the aisle, family heirlooms on display, and a boho-meets-modern look that perfectly blended Ali and Nicholas’ unique styles.

We’re so glad Clary Pfeiffer shared this beautiful day with us for V9!

Tell us all the basics of your wedding! Why did you choose these things? Did any of these details hold special meaning for you as a couple? We decided to get married in the Florida Keys. It is home to Nick, and has become one of our favorite places to visit. We loved the idea of sharing that magic with our closest friends and family, so we found a beautiful spot in Islamorada called The Caribbean Resort. It really had that old world Florida feel, plus many of our guests were able to stay on the resort!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. What was your favorite thing about it? I had a dress emergency three weeks before the wedding. The dress I had originally chosen was not fitting properly, and alterations were not working, so I took a chance and bought a backup dress online. It came three days before I left for Florida. It ended up being absolutely perfect, and felt like it was made for me.
Describe your bridesmaids’ dresses. How did you choose them? I knew I wanted simple, elegant, ivory bridesmaid dresses, and that I wanted everyone to choose their own dress and style so they were comfortable. We went to Bella Bridesmaid in St. Louis and had a wonderful experience. Everyone chose from two different dress lines and we incorporated three colors to mix it up. I loved the way it turned out. Everyone looked stunning!

What songs did you use for your ceremony? I walked down the aisle to Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.” He is my favorite artist, and that song it just so beautiful!
What was the most memorable or touching moment of your wedding day? For both of us, I think it was when I walked down the aisle and we saw each other for the first time. We were both crying. It was very emotional and special.

Did you do a first look? Why or why not? If so, tell us about it! Nick was very insistent that he wanted to see me for the first time that day when I was walking down the aisle. It was such a touching, special moment, so I was glad we waited.
Tell us a bit about the wedding ceremony. What part was most special to you? Did you include any special readings? We wanted our ceremony to be simple and sentimental. Many of our loved ones have passed or were not able to be there, so we started off with a moment of silence, thinking of them. We were fortunate to have our brother-in-law, Hank, marry us. Both he and Nick’s sister, Jane, are very rooted in their faith, and made it very special.

Did you have a cocktail hour? If so, what was it like? Our sunset cocktail hour was inspired by the Cuban culture in the Florida Keys. We had freshly muddled mojitos and cigars from a local cigar shop. He rolls his own cigars and they are wonderful!

What was the design inspiration for your wedding? Why was this design special to you as a couple? I love most things bohemian, but I didn’t want our wedding to be overly vintage. Nick really likes modern, clean lines, so we mixed the two and it ended up being perfect!

Tell us about your wedding flowers. How did you choose them? What did you love about them? I wanted very organic florals with pinks and oranges to complement the Florida locale. I absolutely love flowers, and wanted the wedding to feel like a garden. My favorite part was probably the bed of flowers above our head table.

What advice would you give to someone currently planning his or her wedding? Have faith that it will all come together in the end! Also, make sure you take a moment that day to look around and soak it all in with your new spouse!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met through work. After meeting my parents for the first time while we were still acquaintances, Nick remembers thinking “they will be my in-laws someday.” He was right!
Tell us about the proposal! We had close friends visiting us that weekend, so we had made plans to show them around. On Saturday, we had brunch and headed to the Arch grounds. I had never actually spent any time at the Arch, but it is something you shouldn’t miss when visiting St. Louis, so it wasn’t suspicious when Nick decided we should also do the helicopter tour. When we got to the banks of the Mississippi (where the helipad is), it was closed. Little did I know, our family and friends were watching from a large bus, only steps away. After walking around for a bit and trying to find an alternative plan, Nick grabbed my hand and pointed down the steps of the arch where our family and friends were holding a sign that said ‘ALI, WILL YOU MARRY ME?” What an amazing feeling! He had an agenda for the day that included a party bus, lunch, a stop at one of our favorite bars in Soulard, and a suite at the Cardinals game! I couldn’t believe all of the work and time he put into organizing this unforgettable day! The best part is that we were able to share it with our amazing friends, family, and even our dog, Arlo!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Blissful, unforgettable, and FUN!
How many guests attended your wedding? 140
Bride’s favorite detail of the wedding: Probably my floral crown. My mom wore one when she married my dad, and I had always wanted to wear one on my wedding day. It was so romantic and beautiful; I didn’t want to take it off. I even went swimming with it on after the reception! I also loved having Ski Soda in our welcome bags. It is made in my hometown, and it was a fun way to incorporate a little piece of home. It is also DELICIOUS!
Were there any family traditions you included in the ceremony? My godmother, Sharon, passed away when I was very young. She had written an article about my grandmother’s wedding band, and it is a tradition in our family to display it at weddings. They are both very close to my heart, so it was special to honor them in that way.
What kind of food did you serve at your reception? Our wedding was planned around the sunset. After it set, everyone sat down for surf and turf. One of our favorite things to do when we are in the Keys is grill Florida lobster tail, so we were so excited to share it with our guests. We paired it with steak and mashed potatoes to give our Midwest friends and family a taste of home as well.
Tell us about your wedding cake or sweets. Key lime pie. Enough said!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We are extremely blessed to have each other, and wonderful family and friends. We are renovating our first home together, and look forward to what the future holds! Hopefully lots of children and dogs!

While attending the most recent Engage wedding industry conference, I had the pleasure of hearing the fabulous Lynn Easton speak. She and her team create magnificent events all around the country (and world!), but we’re proud that’s she’s based in the Southeast and that her work has graced our pages many times. (Most recently, in our new issue!)

During Lynn’s talk, she referred to herself as “the queen of Sperry Tents,” and it’s true, they pop up over and again in her design plans. Of course, my ears immediately perked up, because I’m a Sperry connoisseur, as well! :) I asked her to share her best tips from years of working with these beauties, and she graciously obliged. Here they are, along with photos from a few of Easton’s Sperry events!

What do you love most about using Sperry tents in your design plans?
Our favorite thing about Sperry Tents is that they assimilate into the great outdoors so beautifully. Their artisan construction, delicate profile, and organic elements allow them to blend beautifully and seamlessly into the great outdoors. The combination of the translucent sailcloth with hand-hewn wood poles, the lyrical lines of the tent, and the flags tossing in the wind creates a welcoming and whimsical backdrop for our design aesthetic.

Why do you choose a Sperry over other types of tents for your clients?
We love the way a Sperry looks at night when you light the top of the tent. The ceiling of a Sperry tent will glow making them as beautiful from the outside as the inside. We also love how they look from a distance. Their natural beauty stirs anticipation as guests make their way to enter the tent!

Do you have any money-saving or design-maximizing tips to share when working with a Sperry tent?
Unlike a frame or structure tent, Sperry tents are beautiful without a stitch of “clothing” – a.k.a. draping! We do tend to drape the side poles to add a bit of luxury, but it is not necessary. The natural amber wood poles of a Sperry are beautiful on their own, and we use them as a design element of the wedding décor.

What are a few little-known tips or tricks from your experience working with dozens of tented events?
— It is very important to consider your historical temps when selecting your tent! When the temperatures rise, the coolest tents will be a white vinyl pole or a white vinyl frame tent as the solid vinyl does the best job of blocking the heat from the sun.
— Sperry tents, while beautiful, are light porous, so you will need to be mindful of how your florals will handle the heat during set up if it’s a very warm day.
— It is also important to remember that a clear top tent acts like a greenhouse, so we never use them during the warm months without AC.
— Ask your tent vendor if they have 10′ poles available for your selected tent. Lifting the side pole height tends to cost a bit more but the extra lift on the sidewalls is worth it!
— If you are working with Sperry tents, remember they come in all shapes and sizes! If you need back of house tents for catering, the band, or restroom facilities, utilizing matching Sperry tents may be more visually appealing. They also make fantastic rain back-up plan tents for ceremonies or cocktail, because they require little to no décor to be aesthetically pleasing.

What is the number one thing readers should know about throwing a tented event?
Tented events are expensive! You have to remember you are essentially building a room that needs to have lighting, power, and some temperature control, and that gets expensive. If you need to floor the tent, do not be surprised when the cost of the flooring is typically more expensive than the entire tent itself.

We never tire of seeing a Charleston wedding around these parts–few places better embody the charm and history the South is beloved for. Considering Isabelle and Brent both work for the iconic Southern menswear brand, Billy Reid, I have no doubt that the magic of the South is something they hold dear, making Charleston the perfect place for their classic fall destination wedding! They met soon after Isabelle joined the Billy Reid team, and a few years plus a New York City proposal later, they teamed up with our Blue Ribbon Vendor A Charleston Bride to plan their celebration. Unsurprisingly, their wedding was full of gorgeous fashion (a love-at-first-sight Monique Lhuillier and perfect red lip for Isabelle and a Billy Reid tux for Brent), but it was also packed to the brim with memories these two and their loved ones will cherish for a lifetime. The dances at their reception were especially meaningful–don’t miss the songs they chose and why they were so very special!

Thank you so much to Ashley Seawell for sharing this stunning day with us!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. It was the first dress that I tried on! I wish that I had a juicier tale about the hunt for my dress, but in all honesty, it happened very easily for me. I knew from the second that we zipped up my dress that it was the one. Of course, I convinced myself that I needed to try a variety of other dresses before committing, but in the end, I selected the very first one.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The most memorable moment for me on our wedding day was when I was walking down the aisle at the church towards Brent. I was completely overwhelmed by everything around me. I was so grateful to have my father walking me down the aisle, and I can’t put into words how overjoyed I was to see all of the familiar faces of friends and family as I made my procession in. Most notably, I will never forget the look on Brent’s face as I walked down the aisle and the feeling that I felt. It was so incredibly special. I am pretty sure that I did not stop shaking for the entire ceremony. The moment was so overwhelmingly wonderful!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? I am Episcopalian, so Brent and I decided that we wanted to get married in the church. Charleston has so many gorgeous churches to offer, but ultimately, we chose Grace Episcopal Church. We fell in love with the clergy and staff at Grace, and the church itself is absolutely breathtaking! For the reception, we chose the William Aiken House. We wanted a space that allowed guests to be both inside and outside. Everyone needs a little A/C break every now and then, especially during a wedding in the South in September! Once we toured the space, it just felt right. The William Aiken House has these amazing piazzas overlooking the elegant pergola in the courtyard. It was the perfect setting.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: One of my favorite details was the lanterns hanging in the trees at the William Aiken House. The William Aiken House has these beautiful old magnolia trees in the courtyard, so I knew that I wanted to incorporate lanterns in some way. It was breathtaking to look out and see the flicker of the lanterns floating in the trees throughout the evening.

Describe your wedding flowers. My wedding bouquet was a gorgeous, loose, hand-tied mix of ivory garden roses, bells of Ireland, veronica, and Italian ruscus (among others). I wanted all of my florals to feel very organic, natural, and earthy. All of our floral arrangements incorporated a lot of greenery. For the arrangements at the reception, we incorporated nude and blush tones and a pop of aubergine, which tied back to my bridesmaids’ dresses. We also incorporated gorgeous fruit accents and chocolate artichokes into our reception arrangements, which I absolutely loved! The arrangements were lush and flowing with greenery, fruit, and flowers.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Three cakes are better than one, in my opinion, so we decided to have a trio of cakes! Two of the cakes were hummingbird cake with cream cheese icing, while the center cake was almond cake with almond icing. All three cakes were adorned with olive leaves for a simple and elegant look that tied back to the greenery in our florals.

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Brent and I chose “Can’t Help Myself” by the Four Tops for our first dance. We wanted a more upbeat song to set the tempo for the evening. Our band was special for many reasons. The K-JAMS hail from Dothan, Alabama, which is my hometown. Not only are they incredible musicians, but they are also dear friends. They don’t typically perform at weddings, so we were incredibly appreciative to have them play and help us celebrate! For Brent’s dance with his mother, they chose “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton. It was such a special moment, and you could feel their love for one another. Both were grinning from ear to ear, and I can’t even count the number of times they twirled. It had to be close to 30 times! For my dance with my father, we chose “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys were a longtime favorite for us both, and it was the perfect song. My dance with my dad was unforgettable. My father passed away shortly after our wedding, and words cannot express how special that moment was for us. I will never forget it. I feel so lucky to have experienced that moment with him, and it’s a memory that I will treasure forever.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Our meeting was serendipitous. I had recently accepted a new job with menswear designer Billy Reid in Alabama, and I was in the process of moving from Manhattan, where I had lived for two years. Brent, who also worked for Billy Reid, had just been relocated with the company to New York City a few weeks prior. Before my move down South, my boss suggested that I help out in Billy Reid’s New York store to familiarize myself with the brand. I vividly remember seeing Brent walk into the store on the morning that we first met. Unbeknownst to me, on the same day of our meeting, Brent passed a note to another Billy Reid colleague that read, “I’m going to marry her.” Our coworker had a good laugh, said “yeah right,” and crumpled up the note. It took two days for Brent to ask me out, and the rest was history.
Tell us all about the proposal! After being together for two years, Brent made plans to propose. I was on a work trip in Manhattan for men’s market, which always fell over Brent’s birthday, so we had to plan his birthday celebrations accordingly. For this particular trip, I planned to fly out of NYC on Thursday afternoon so I could arrive home just in time to take the birthday boy out on his actual birthday. Little did I know, I was about to fall into the most carefully crafted plan. On Wednesday afternoon, I received an email from my boss, asking if I could extend my trip to attend a client dinner on Thursday evening. After a few hours of apologies to Brent and several guilt trips later, Brent and I finally determined that it was best if I extended my trip and attended the dinner. I felt rotten! My boss then asked if I could select a restaurant and set up reservations. I immediately picked one of my favorites, Maialino in the Gramercy Park Hotel, which Brent anticipated that I would do. Thursday arrived, and I was on my way to the dinner. While in a cab, I received a text from my boss that our table wasn’t ready, so he was taking our clients to grab a drink nearby. I was instructed to find the bellhop, who would take me to meet my party. Once I arrived, I found the bellhop and followed his lead as we crossed the street toward Gramercy Park. As he was unlocking the gate to the park, I became very confused, and I was almost ready to turn around. That’s when he swung open the gate, and I was greeted by Brent, who had been waiting for me in the park. He proposed at sunset in my favorite park in New York. We celebrated with a dinner at Maialino and then spent the weekend in the city.
When did y’all get married? September 6, 2015
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 175 guests
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! For my borrowed item, I wore a “traveling garter” that has been passed from bride to bride among my girlfriends. Our traveling garter conveniently also has blue incorporated! For my old item, I wore my mother’s diamond earrings, and I considered my wedding dress my something new.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our photographer, Ashley Seawell, and videography team, Cinema 843, were so amazing at documenting our day, and we are so appreciative of their work. We are so thankful for all of the beautiful photographs and video footage that allow us to not only relive our wedding day all over again, but also allow us to remember our loved ones and the moments that matter. At one point during the planning process, I questioned whether it would be worth having a videographer. Looking back, I can honestly say that this is one detail that I am so happy that I did not pass up. My biggest piece of advice for future brides and grooms would be to make sure that you incorporate both photography and videography into your wedding day. You won’t regret it!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We recently moved to Atlanta, so we are looking forward to enjoying married life in our new home with our kitty, Jack! We are excited to settle into our loft on the Westside, which has some of the best restaurants in Atlanta within walking distance. We are both big foodies, so we are excited to try out all of the new places (without worrying about the pesky wedding diet)!
