String lights, all white table settings with sweet succulent-flled details and… a piñata! Maconda + Sacha’s elegant Texas wedding (with a twist) looks like my kind of party. I love how M + S played off the natural beauty of the perfectly Southern The Argyle mansion with their classically understated decor.

I also love the sense of family they so effortlessly created. Reggie from Phenom Photographers, who was on hand to document Maconda + Sacha’s big day, told us that one thing that struck him from the beginning with this couple was the overwhelming feeling of family. From the beginning I just felt like I belonged there, almost like a cousin with a film camera.

Such dapper gents! I ‘m quite fond of the trend of mixed bridesmaid’s dresses, and I must say I love that Sacha and his groomsmen went the mix’n’match route with their tuxes.

I love Maconda’s smile in the photo on the right. Her joy jumps right out of the screen!

The Byrd Collective did a stunning job creating florals that flowed perfectly with the lush landscape of The Argyle lawn. Sometimes less is more – there is such beauty in the simplicity of these arrangements.

How much fun do you bet this was? I love the idea of a piñata at the reception!

Today’s Southern Spotting is simple and sweet — and oh so Southern. With the help of the planners at By Invitation Only, the bride and groom dreamt up this wall of mason jars to go behind their bar, to the delight of their guests, I’m sure!

As I’m nearing the end of my own wedding preparations and really thinking through how all of the details I’ve been planning are going to be integrated into the reception, I’ve realized more and more that a large part of surprising and delighting guests is in the styling of details. These mason jars would have been adorable on a plain shelf, as well, but pairing them with the ladders and old boards really takes them up a notch! And of course, I love the mix of striped straws and washi tape flags.

Huge thank you to Courtney Dox for sharing this gem with us! And tell me: Have you thought much about the “styling” of things at your wedding? Pies in china cabinets, signature drinks displayed on old scales, and a guest book set up at a writing desk sure make a big impact, but they’re a ton of work to plan and implement!

Southern Delicacy: Beignets

Ooh, y’all! This post is bound to make you hungry (just ask Emily!), so I’d like to give you fair warning before you scroll down.

Ready? Beignets are a pastry made of fried dough, traditionally served with powdered sugar on top. Though fried dough can be found internationally (and at most state fairs!), the origin of the term beignet is specifically French — it means “bump”! Perfect for these pillowy treats, no?

In the South, beignets are most closely associated with New Orleans, which makes sense, since these delicacies were introduced in America by the Acadians (French colonists) in the 18th century. They were quickly incorporated into home-style Creole cooking, and NOLA still reigns supreme as the U.S. home of the beignet.

The most famous beignet spot is Cafe Du Monde, a coffee stand on Decatur Street that opened in 1862 (and is now open 24 hours a day — good for satisfying cravings at all hours of the morning and night!).

Fun fact: Beignets were declared the official state doughnut of Louisiana in 1986. I’m a fan of any state that has a state doughnut!!

These light-as-air sweets would make a perfect late-night snack at a wedding – especially served with hot cocoa or coffee! For an extra fun twist, ask your caterer to cut the dough into heart shapes!

Of course, there are many ways to serve beignets, including my personal favorite: the “biscuit beignet”! Yes, you heard me right! Just last week I had my fair share of them at Another Broken Egg Cafe. To die for!

    New Orleans is a frequent weekend getaway spot for us and we ALWAYS go to Cafe Du Monde for beignets and coffee! My MoH is in the process of planning my NOLA bachelorette party and I know we’ll have to stop by the morning after!

    I LOVE beignets! Growing up, my mom had a good friend who was from NOLA, so I was introduced to them early on. They sell Cafe Du Monde beignet mix at World Market so I like to make them on the weekends as a special treat!

    Love it!! We served beignets as a late night snack at a wedding and guests LOVED it, even the ones who have had them a million times thought it was such a treat to have at a wedding.

    LOVE Beignets! Me and my boy started dating after a college trip to NOLA & it has been our favorite vacay spot ever since! Now every time we are in the City we take a stroll to Cafe Du Monde for an after dinner snack…..so much powedered sugar goodness! My favorite wedding detail is that we are having beignets and a hot chocolate bar at around 11:00pm as the “later night snack” for our NYE wedding!
