With a husband who travels frequently, I can definitely identify with the challenge Claire + Nathan faced when they took their relationship long distance. But with creativity and the help of Claire’s friends, I think Nathan came through with a sweet and surprised-filled proposal (be sure to read all about it below)! Then he poured on some more sugar during their ceremony, by vowing: “I give my all to you, my support for your achievement, my counsel for problems, my prosperity for yours, my shoulder for your tears and my ear for your voice.” Swoon!

Special thanks to Brett Heidebrecht for capturing their joy filled day!

Jumping up and down on the bed in hot rollers? I want to be friends with this bridal party!

Describe your wedding flowers: Gorgeous! We had wildflower bouquets with pale pinks and creams, light blue and burlap and lace tied around.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert: We each had a traditional cake (pink and creamy for mine and a red Razorback for his) and then had cheesecake squares!

Personally, I’m loving the mixed bridesmaid dresses. Each of Claire’s girl’s picked out her own short and sleeveless gray dress, and acccording to Claire, they came from Anthropologie, J Crew, and Nordstroms.

I walked down the aisle to “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” It was the same song that was also used in my parents wedding. During the wedding, our friend sang “Till Kingdom Come,” which is our song.

We decorated the property with a ton of white lights draped through trees and lining the buildings — it looked gorgeous as the sun went down.

We spent a good chunk on photography, knowing we would have those pictures forever! Food was another one — we wanted everyone traveling to our wedding to have a great time and enjoy the party!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met our junior year of college. I went with a group of girls over to a friend’s house to cook dinner and Nathan was there. Two years later, I graduated and Nathan went to India for a year. We didn’t speak until a year and a half later when he called to ask me on a date. I swooned and the rest is history!
Describe the proposal. Nathan and I dated long distance for a year while he lived in Arkansas and I worked in Lawrence, Kansas. I’d settled on not being surprised by a proposal because every weekend I saw him was so planned! But he arranged for my friends to plan my whole weekend – Friday, two friends took me to get a manicure and a spray tan and Saturday, two other friends took me to get coffee and out to a lookout that Nathan and I love. As I walked up the stairs of the lookout tower, I saw Nathan sitting there. I was shocked! He led me up the stairs and we looked through a photo album of the four years we’d known each other. It was four years to the day of when we’d met.
In what month did you get married? May
How many guests attended your wedding? About 230
Did you decide to do a “first look”? Yes, mostly for time’s sake.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? My dad passed away when I was a kid, so instead of a father-daughter dance, I danced with my mom and sister to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” It was a sweet moment of celebrating our family
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Ask for help when you need it! Being stressed can take all the fun out of planning a wedding.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We just moved to Springfield, Missouri to work with a college ministry at Missouri State University. We’re getting settled into our first home!

Y’all have been caught up on what’s been happening behind the scenes in the Southern Weddings office for June, but we can’t forget about rounding up some of our favorite highlights from our Real Weddings! Emily, Marissa and I are here with our lovely features.

FAVORITE WEDDING DRESS: Jillian’s lightly tiered dress looked lovely against the backdrop of her barn wedding and stole Marissa’s heart in the process! Emily was taken with the classic Southern lace that Christine wore, while I adored the sweet white dress that Samantha wore for her getaway.

FAVORITE BRIDESMAID DRESS: Ellie’s bridesmaids were a wonderful example of mixed bridesmaids dresses looking lovely. I love how they comfortable they look, too! Emily and Marissa loved the uniform look. Emily was a fan of Christine’s pale blue bridesmaids and Marissa couldn’t get enough of the ruffled turquoise dresses at Hillary’s wedding.

FAVORITE FEMALE ACCESSORY: The baby’s breath and pink rose hair wreath that Hillary’s flower girl donned was just about the cutest thing I ever saw! Marissa adored another flower girl from a June wedding — the Southern-as-can-be gingham and lace outfit in Jillian + Marcus’ ceremony. Emily’s eye was drawn to the glittery pumps that Austin wore.

FAVORITE MENSWEAR: Y’all know how sweet we are on the beaus and bows on the blog! Bart’s groomsmen’s black and white gingham number took Marissa’s vote, while the glittery wrap from Steven’s boutonniere was too good for Emily to pass up. I fell head over heels for the hip gentlemen in Samantha + John’s wedding.

FAVORITE DETAIL: Oh the details. Our couples are so creative! Sigrid + Bart won me over when they decided to lead their guests to the reception area with giant polka dotted balloons. Emily loved how Jillian + Marcus used painted pie tins as food signs! Of course, the colorful “Here Comes the Bride” banner at Mariangelix + Steven’s wedding won Marissa’s vote.

FAVORITE CEREMONY: Ceremonies are my favorite part of the wedding to read about (other than the proposal story!). The monogram details and classic setup at Hillary + Kyle’s ceremony won Emily over. Marissa loved the outdoor ceremony space at Jillian + Marcus’ wedding. I thought Erika + Jon’s “I do’s” in her mother’s backyard was so memorable.

FAVORITE BOUQUET: We’re always impressed by how unique bouquets can be! The colorful mix of lush flowers from Austin + Steven’s wedding became an instant favorite with Emily. I was smitten with the sweet colors and mixed textures of Jillian’s bouquet (plus that ribbon — I die!). Marissa adored the colorful bouquet that Mariangelix carried down the aisle, plus her pretty ribbon and brooch.

FAVORITE SWEET: Is anyone surprised that Marissa’s favorite sweet was Hillary + Kyle’s classic white and monogrammed cake? I thought Sigrid + Bart’s collection of pink ruffled cakes was adorable and Emily loved the late-night chocolate milk and donut hole desserts at Austin + Steven’s wedding.

FAVORITE PHOTO: This is always our favorite category to pick highlights from! How sweet is the photo of Samantha walking down the aisle? Emily thought so, too! Marissa (and the rest of us) thought Hillary’s sleepy flower girl was too cute to ignore. I loved the joy and community that emanated from the photo of Erika + Jon’s toasts.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m nursing a minor sun burn and fighting a craving for some Americone Dream ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s — all signs of a great holiday, I think. The Southern Weddings ladies had a wonderful Fourth of July. We took a break from the office on Wednesday and took in the fireworks. We hope you did the same!

With our office being a whirlwind of V5 prep, June flew right on by us. Check out our Instagram Recap for some behind the scenes.

Summer is in full swing, y’all! We brought our friend, A Southern Lady over to the blog to share her summer essentials with us in our latest installment of our Summer in the South series.

We’re just smitten with Plum Pretty Sugar’s newest Castelbel & Trumpet collection. We’re giving away one of their robes to a lucky lady who tells us what she’s up to on the morning on her big day. Enter here.

Marissa covered one of our favorite Southern Delicacies this week: Pimento Cheese. This Southern staple is a quick fix for summer days, but we love how it can be dressed up for special occasions.

Real Weddings make our hearts happy

Megan + Jeremy planned a nautical wedding that gave guests a “summer fun by the sea” feel. We love how the red, white and blue scheme fits in perfectly with the Fourth of July! See it here.

Kristal + Johnny’s “burlap and bling” wedding was a sweet nod to their favorite aspects of the South and to their dear families. See it here.

Good news!

Planning your engagement photos? The team at Wedding Lights Events is giving away an engagement photo session in Paris! (How romantic!) Check out their blog post here for more details and to enter.

Have a terrific weekend!
