Paul and Mecheal Johnson always seem to photograph the sweetest couples and families, don’t they? Katie + Clark are no exception. Their custom invitations from The Happy Envelope (see more on those here!) set the scene for a long weekend of celebration at WaterSound Beach in Florida. Stephanie of Savoir Faire Weddings planned the party (with plenty of help from the bride herself!), and enlisted Florals by the Sea for the beautiful blooms. One of my favorite details? Katie picked out her Vera Wang dress when she was searching for something to wear to her high school prom. Eight years later, B. Hughes Bridal made her Vera dreams come true! I’m just guessing, here, but I’m thinking Katie’s bridesmaids, wearing custom LulaKate dresses designed by the bride and purchased at Bella Bridesmaid in Nashville, must have been almost as happy (sartorially speaking) as the bride herself. We’ll be back with more from Paul Johnson soon!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met on July 22, 2006. My friend Amy and I were going to a party on Saturday night. While walking down the street, a car was speeding right toward us. It pulled up, and the person inside rolled down the window and yelled “Rooney-Morris, what’s up!” I looked at the person, confused. He knew me but I didn’t know him. Amy introduced us and it turned out to be Clark. We said our hellos and then went our separate ways. Later that night, Clark turned up at the party we were at. After a very fun night of dancing to and getting to know each other, Clark called it a night. Amy and I went to another place, where to my surprise, Clark showed up again! At this point, he said he wasn’t leaving without my phone number. I was a little hesitant to give it out, but with Clark’s persuasive skills, I handed it over.
Describe the proposal. Clark’s family takes a vacation every year at the end of July to Hilton Head Island, SC. After 4 years of dating, I finally made it to the Coffey family vacation. We had dinner reservations the night after we arrived for The Sage Room. Before dinner, Clark and I took a walk on the beach. While walking, Clark said, “Hey, what’s that?” I looked to my right and saw a circle of candles with rose petals in the middle, a bottle of champagne and 2 champagne flutes. At this point, I had an idea of what was about to happen. I began to cry and kept saying “oh my gosh, oh my gosh!” Clark got down on one knee and I don’t remember a thing he said except, “Katie Morris, will you marry me?!” I, of course, said yes, grabbed Clark and would not stop hugging him.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Flawless, elated, unforgettable.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We had sweet tea (mixed with a little lemonade and Firefly vodka), sang the SEC football song, Rocky Top, we had burlap, fried green tomato BLT’s, and crawfish to top with at the mashed potato martini bar! We had a lot of Southern people doing what Southerners do best: throwing a party every night of the wedding weekend starting on Thursday, lots of “y’alls,” blessing our hearts and family love.

Hi Doris! I believe LulaKate dresses are sold at other retailers besides Bella Bridesmaid, but I’m not positive (and unfortunately, the retail locations link on their site seems to be down!). I would try giving them a call — they should be able to help you out!

Hello there. I was wondering where you purchased your bridesmaid dresses. I absolutely love them. I am from Canada and I can’t find them anywhere. I am traveling to Myrtle Beach May 24 through May 29 and I would love to find a store in the vicinity that carries these dresses. If you can help that would be great. I would even appreciate the name of the designer or the name of the style of dress.

Thank you so much in advance for your time. I really wish I had some “southerness” in my blood. lol

      Hi Alisha!

Katie customized her bridesmaid dresses through LulaKate. They appear to be a mix of LulaKate’s “Zoe,” “Maggie,” “Christy,” and “Chandler” styles. There’s a store locator for LulaKate here, and it looks like the closest ones to Myrtle Beach are in Charleston. I hope that helps! Best of luck :)

As with all outdoor weddings, it’s important to think about how the weather will affect your day. For example, if you’re getting married in the summer, plan to have lots of water and fans available. If it’ll be chilly (we love the idea of a winter beach wedding!), pass out pashminas and set up a hot drinks station. 4. Come up with a backup plan. A detailed backup plan is another outdoor wedding must-have. As well as planning for rain, think about what to do if you’re faced with a particularly windy day, which can affect beaches more dramatically than other outdoor areas. […]

Weekly Round-Up

by in Main on

Hi there, friends, and happy Friday! As usual, we’ve tried our hardest to round up the loveliest and most Southern bits of wedding inspiration for you. If you missed anything on the blog this week, now’s the time to catch up!

We celebrated Memorial Day with a bright and summery inspiration shoot and were filled with gratitude for all the men and women who have served and are serving our country.

Inspired by Megan + Steven’s wedding on the blog this week, we showed you how to create your own biscuit bar! Honeys, jams, jellies and more abounded in this post as we rounded up our favorite details.

Emily came across two Southern Spottings this week, and both from the same wedding! The first was a magnolia ceremony arch. We love how the big, bold leaves provide a wonderful frame for a ceremony. We’re also crazy for their rambunctious ring(ing) bearer.

We wrapped up the month of May with our Monthly Round-Up! Take a look at our picks for favorite dress, cake, photo and more here!

Sierra reintroduced us to Kristen + Kincaid’s bright Western-themed bash in this week’s featured Real Weddings Gallery.

A look at our beautiful weddings from this week:

Jenn + Barret tied the knot with vintage rustic style (and the prettiest wildflowers)! Check out their wedding here and here.

Megan + Steven had a pink and blue wedding with a biscuit bar we’ve been dying to recreate! See it here and here.

Some fun announcements:

“Don’t Tell the Bride,” a wedding show for the Oprah Winfrey Network, is casting couples! The show gives $25,000 to eight cash-strapped couples to create the wedding of their dreams. The only catch? The bride and groom can’t see each other for three weeks before the nuptials, and the groom has to plan the whole wedding in secret (with NO input from his bride). For more information or to recommend an engaged couple for the show, email Rebecca at [email protected] with your name, age, number, city/state, photo of the couple, and brief description of why you’d be ideal for the show.

Want to win a wedding in Miami? Yes, I would, too. The Knot is partnering up with The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau for a “Marry Me in Miami” contest! If you’re interested, go to www.marrymeinmiami.com to play an online game that tests your knowledge of Miami landmarks. Five lucky couples who play will randomly be chosen to compete in an Amazing Race-style challenge including a cake-eating contest and a flower arranging race. This is serious, y’all. Head to the contest website for more details!

Newlywish, the online wedding registry is teaming up with Marcy Blum and Send The Trend to create a collection of jewelry and accessories for brides and bridesmaids’ gifts. Take a look at the collection on Newlywish!

We’re so excited for this announcement: The Paloma’s Nest flagship store is opening in Austin, Texas on June 15! We’ve featured Paloma’s Nest in print and their ring bearer bowls even made an appearance in Katharine + Kyle’s wedding. Check out their website for more details.

One more fun opportunity: The Brooklyn Arts Center is having a wedding show on August 7 in Wilmington, NC. Tons of wedding vendors will be there, including designers, photographers, bakeries and boutiques. Head to the BAC wedding showcase site for more information and for a link to buy tickets. The first 50 brides to purchase a ticket will receive a swag bag with local goodies and a chance to win a Romantic Wilmington Weekend Getaway! Additionally, a portion of the sales will go to the Wish Upon A Wedding charity.

And don’t forget! Our iPad giveaway is still going on, and the SW Yard Sale is next week! Email Nicole to RSVP!

Have a great weekend, y’all! Let us know if you and your sweetie have exciting plans!

Remember yesterday’s Southern Spotting? Well, Chelsey + Jason provided us with a double feature!

I love their rambunctious ring bearer! Instead of bringing the rings, be brought the ring, if you know what I mean. While not for everyone, this could be perfect for those couples with, say, more energetic nephews. I’m pretty sure ring bearers in the 8-10 set would think this was the coolest job ever (much cooler than carrying a girly ring pillow, anyway).

Love this? Check out the rest of the details on photographer Katie Rivers’ blog here! And tell me: are you having a ring bearer? What will they be carrying down the aisle, if anything?

We are having my fiance’s nephew, as our ring bearer. His sister will be our flower girl. While she will be 3-1/2 by the time of our wedding, he will be a whopping year and two months old. At this point, we’re just hoping he can walk, so carrying anything seemed like too lofty of a goal.

  3. avatar Kristin reply

I’ve been wondering the same thing- do most ring bearers these days actually bring the rings down the aisle? I’m trying to decide what to do … and if I don’t give him our rings, what do you give the little guy? (he’s 5 years old) Any suggestions are appreciated!

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Kristin! I think a lot of ring bearers do still carry the rings down the aisle (some couples given them fake substitutes, but that seems a little strange to me). I think the trick is to hand off the pillow/bowl/rings at the very last moment before you send him off down the aisle. Best of luck!

My mom saw this idea a few years ago and since then I have planned to have my little cousin act as “the bell ringer” for my wedding one day! He is a spunky little thing and this role will fit his personality just perfectly. Shhh! I don’t want my secret to get out!
