What’s that? Another contest? One where you can win an iPod Shuffle?! That’s right!
The SW ladies have a fairly epic, relatively secret project up our sleeves. All we can tell you at this point is that we’re compiling Southern uh… “gift baskets”. Two sets of Southern gift baskets, in fact: one preppy and traditional, and one, shall we say, more along the lines of “dirty South” (ahem).
So what do you need to do to win this contest? Find the BEST possible item for one of our baskets. And then tell us about it!
Who: You
When: Sometime before Tuesday, October 27 at 6:00pm
Why: Because you could win a Shuffle. And they’re great for going to the gym and traveling. Obvs.
How: Find a great item for one of our gift baskets. Leave a comment on this post. VERY IMPORTANT: You must copy and paste the link to the item you think we should include! Make sure to specify whether your item is for the traditional + preppy or the dirty South category.
Good luck!
A big bottle of Firefly Vodka. So cute and so definitely Southern. http://www.fireflyvodka.com/Given different accoutrements, this could easily fit in either basket. Add a bag of porkrinds and flask and it’s Dirty South, fit for Foxworthy. But I’d vote for a recipe tag for a Ginger Glow (1 part Firefly, 1 part gingerale, a lemon twist) tied with satin ribbon to the stem of a monogrammed glass. Tres preppy, in the very best sense.
Yee Haw Industries is by far the best Southern find I’ve ever made. In the heart of Knoxville, definitely dirty South: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vl_other_2&listing_id=32767039
A bowtie and belle band from Southern Proper. With choices of prints like "Butterbean Beau", "Cotton Pickin’ Beau" and my personal favorite "Just Peachy Beau" … I mean, it most certainly doesn’t get any better than that. A "Sweet Magnolia" or "Cotton Pickin’" Belle band is the choice for the ladies.
Definitely southern — the food & the men. http://store.pauladeen.com/product/587/26
two words: Lilly Pulitzer! You can get tons of Lilly Pulitzer goodies for a reasonable price, one is this make-up bag, which you could fill with make-up brushes and a lip gloss,http://www.lillypulitzer.com/Bags/Brush-Worthy-Make-up-Bag/invt/70180&bklist=icat,5,colone,,accessoriesandfootwear,womensgiftsandaccessorieAlso, you could get these circle noteshttp://www.lillypulitzer.com/New-Arrivals-for-Fall/Circle-Notes/invt/e1237&bklist=icat,5,colone,,stationery,statcorrespondthese coastershttp://www.lillypulitzer.com/Gifts/Coasters/invt/e1096&bklist=icat,5,colone,,stationery,statgiftsthis mughttp://www.lillypulitzer.com/Gifts/Latte-Da-Mug/invt/e1249&bklist=icat,5,colone,,stationery,statgiftsand last but not least, this guest book, for the wedding!http://www.lillypulitzer.com/Gifts/Guest-Book/invt/e1097&bklist=icat,5,colone,,stationery,statgiftsLilly Pulitzer is preppy at its finest!
I would get this magnet made with the bride and groom’s likenesses. What a wonderful save the date! :) http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=9166396&ref=sr_gallery_5&&ga_search_query=feud&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=date_desc&includes%5B%5D=tags&includes%5B%5D=title
You need something pecan for sure! Divinity or pralines, Priester’s Pecans here in Alabama (http://www.priesters.com/) make a lot of different varieties of pecan goods. And I keep thinking cotton, maybe a "cotton" scented soap? http://www.countryscents.net/index.php (this site has a goat’s milk soap called "cotton pickin" which sounds cute.) A Nehi Peach soda? Some Burt’s Bees chapstick (from Durham, NC!) Just some thoughts!
Mini bloody mary mix bottles would be perfect for the "dirty South" basket. Include Goody powder, saltines, a mini bottle of vodka and a bottle of water to help your guests recover from a night of too much fun!https://www.tanksbloodymary.com/products/product_info.php?cPath=1_4&products_id=32&osCsid=e1f0716330de148729b0512a984e9452
Apple Butter would be delicious, very Southern, and you could make it yourself for pretty cheap and customize the containers for the occasion of the gift basket. Or you could do it the easy way and just have Harry and David’s do it for you. Yum! http://www.harryanddavid.com/gifts/store/product____shop-our-stores-harry-and-david_shop-our-stores-butter-preserves_5002738This would work for either the Dirty South basket if you included biscuit mix or the traditional/preppy basket if you included scones or coffee.
I went to college in North Georgia and I used to love going to Helen during Octoberfest and visiting Nora Mills while there. Pretty much anything they have could be put in the Dirty South basket from their speckled grits, Grandma’s pancake/biscuit mix, Georgia Moonshine jelly, funnel cake mix, Vidalia Onion dressing, blackberry jam, and the list could go on and on. http://www.noramill.com/NoraMillCatalog2008.pdfYum, I’m ready for a visit to Helen now!
I thought of two items- one for each of the baskets. For the Dirty South- I was thinking some fun items for a cocktail partyA Lilly Pullitzer Cocktail Shakerhttp://www.preppyprincess.com/lillypulitzercocktailshakers.aspx Some Cocktail Napkins with fun sayings- http://www.preppyprincess.com/lillypulitzerbeveragenapkinswithfunsayings.aspxAnd for the Preppy and Traditional-A monogrammed coffee mug- what bride while planning can’t use a little coffee on the go!http://www.thepreppypolkadot.com/item_29/Preppy-Personalized-Travel-Mug.htmAnd a cute tote to carry all your notes and such for planning the big dayhttp://www.thepreppypolkadot.com/item_108/Personalized-Reusable-Tote-Bags.htmLove the giveaways!
There is nothing more southern than apple pie! For the dirty south basket try apple pie liquor: http://www.drinkpie.com/You can add the mixers for a drink or have it solo as a shot- delicious either way! And it is PERFECT for this time of year! For the Traditional +Preppy baskets I like southern crochet lace handkerciefs, with the optional monogram of course! Check these out at http://www.thelaceshop.com/wicrlaha.html
My fiance bought all his groomsmen a DIRTY SOUTH present for their gift basket. A pair of cuff links that are shot gun shells. It might be southern to some or redneck to others :) But either way they will love them the morning of our wedding when they are duck hunting. http://www.cuff-daddy.com/novelty-shotgun-shell-cufflinks-yellow.html
Definitely more a traditional & preppy girl myself, so I have two ideas for that basket:1) Vessel Ideation’s ONE TeaKettle [http://www.vesselideation.com/one.html]It’s gorgeous and is the perfect sidekick for a modern woman with traditional habits… like, throwing teaparties? 2) Pink Loves Brown’s Pink Polka Dots Suitcase Set [http://www.pinklovesbrown.com/item.php?item_id=424&category_id=57]I love all of Nicole Balch’s artsy-craftsy stationary, but with a little paper suitcase to boot, this is the sweetest and simplest way for a bride to be to get organized, and in style.
One for the dirty basket, my husbands favorite BBQ seasoning, Byron’s Butt Rub!!! http://www.buttrub.com/ "A little Butt Rub Makes Everything Better!"
Being from the South, these are definitely under the dirty south category. Anything with cotton on it would be perfect to put in a southern welcome basket.http://www.themississippigiftcompany.com/cotton-items.aspx
Kentucky Bourbon Jelly! Delicious, and undeniably Southern!http://www.kyagr.com/Main.aspx?procedure=show_page(9242)Also, I love homemade things in gift baskets. A Buttermilk biscuit recipe with all the ingredients (except for the perishables of course) could be packed in a mason jar with cute grosgrain ribbon tied around the top.
Sweet + Salty = Dirty South! Givnig a nod to a Tennessee-born bride and a groom from Maryland, we put Moon Pies and Crab Chips in our guests’ welcome bags….a brown-paper handled bag, with a very preppy monogram label on the front.http://www.moonpie.com/http://www.utzsnacks.com/store/p-16-pick-60-single-serve-bags.aspx
I am from NC and live in Minnesota now. One thing I miss most are my Croakies! http://www.croakies.com/Products.aspx?cat=CRS I totally got made fun of when I wore them here my first summer, but I still rock them. I think these would be a wonderful addition to the preppy basket. Additionally, a mint julep mix would be awesome, too.http://www.islandweddingshop.com/page/IWS/PROD/gourmet-beach-gifts/PB-3307This has been really fun!
How perfect is this beautiful Wren House. This would definitely fit best in the ‘preppy and traditional’ gift basket. Not only is it darling, but a portion of the proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Can’t go wrong with that!http://louisvillestoneware.com/shop/item/PINKD541/
What does every preppy southerner need???? CROAKIES of course! What makes Croakies even better???? WHEN THEY ARE MONOGRAMMED (with the bride and grooms wedding date or initials, etc). A perfect traditional and preppy gift that keeps on giving. Mix and match colors, fonts and thread colors to make the perfect Croakie for men and Women of the South :) I have pairs and someone always comments on them. http://www.thepinkmonogram.com/php/first.php?ACT=5041
Maptotes! These adorable tote bags are available in a variety of city "maps" complete with local icons and places. I contacted the designer, Rachel, to see if she is able to customize a tote for a certain city. At $10 per bag, they can customize a tote bag with the city of your wedding and even add personal touches (ex. landmarks for your wedding, rehearsal, etc). With my wedding coming up in May, I am thinking these map totes would be great gifts to leave in the hotel rooms for out of town guests! I ordered the Paris tote for myself and it’s absolutely adorable and affordable! Tres chic!Visit the website http://www.maptote.com/
Chocolate Covered Pop-corn from Peterbrooke Chocolate! http://www.peterbrooke.com/chocolate-covered-popcorn.htmIt’s some of the best chocolate ever and covering popcorn… mmmmmm! It’s sooooo good! And if the story behind it was included with the bag, that would make it a really cool gift! And it’s not really dirty, so I would suggest this for the preppy and traditional. Even though it’s not the traditional way to eat popcorn.
~Since I’m a southern belle myself I will have to go with an item for the "dirty South" basket. The south is all about barbeque and some of the best sauce that I have tasted comes from The Treser Family Foods, Inc. which is local to me in Blacksburg, VA. Camp Sauce is ROCKIN’ it’s All Natural, Gluten Free and tastes DELISH::http://treserfamilyfoods.com/~I know that in the south we are all about the food and eating but we also love jewelry :) Pandora "Charm" Bracelets are huge around here in VA so a beautiful Pandora Bracelet with a "Southern Bell Charm" would be a great starter bracelet::http://www.pandora-jewelry.com/US/Jewelry/Charms/Sterlingsilver/79517P.aspx
For the dirty south gift basket, it doesn’t GET more southern than Crook’s Grits. Growing up in Chapel Hill, Crook’s is an icon and the epitome of southern feel-good food. At another local staple, you can buy branded Crook’s grits and Good Old Grits Cookbook. Classic! https://www.southernseason.com/ppf/cid/15/m/0/n/15/p/2/s/0/id/5313/prod.asp
Anything from Gullah Gourmet they have CUTE names for all of their foods such as "Hush dem Puppies"(hush puppies) and "Nana’s been a nut Bread" (banana nut bread) "Geechie Peachie Cobbla" (peach Cobbler) but are nost famous for their shrimp n grits and she crab soup! I think these wouls make a SUPER cute addition to any gist basket "preppy" or "dirty south"!!http://www.gullahgourmet.com/shop/sides.php
For the Atlanta girls..glass bottled coke. Also, love these items from Miss Pickles Press…either the "smores y’all" or the "spread the love" jam jars. http://www.misspicklespress.com/misspicklespress/paper_goods.html
What’s more southern than college football? Every preppy girl would love one of these:http://www.vineyardvines.com/category__14613_14607_____13055Especially the Florida Gator one!!
A Hootie and the Blowfish cd! The band met as freshman at the University of South Carolina. I’m getting married in Charleston in April and our first dance song is a "Will You Be My Man" cover that the band did awhile back.
For the Dirty South Gift Basket here’s a little something to stimulate the imagination in a playful, unique way – "A HOT AFFAIR" board game challenges couples to stretch the limits of passion and fun! This is good for newleyweds and Golden Anniversary couples! Le Purrrr….
Oops…sorry, I left out the link! This is for the Dirty South Gift Basket – a naughty board game for two! I think this is probably the only game that could compete with Sunday football!! http://www.theromanticspark.com/A_Hot_Affair_Game_p/eld-6280-6a1.htm
ZINKE DESIGN!!! They have the best preppy+traditional gift items. What bridesmaid doesn’t want a fabulous eyemask (they even come in 6 different colors) or girlie slippers for a nap after her duties are complete. These items are so fabulous the bride should throw a couple in for herself, I did :o)http://www.zinkedesign.com/index.php/past_collections/
As a Southern girl, lemonade is my drink of choice if I’m not trying to watch my figure and fit into that wedding dress! These lemonade mixes are adorable with the title "NOthing is Sweeter Than Love" and would work for either basket. http://www.momentsofelegance.com/catalog/nothing-sweeter-than-love-personalized-lemonade-p-2174.htmlInclude the Firefly one of the other posters mentioned and you have a killer Southern drink for the Dirty South basket!
Being new to the South, the one traditional thing that I recently found to be so sweet and "everlasting" is the Sweet Pea Garden Kit at: http://www.olivebarn.com/eco-pot-sweet-pea.html. It mixes Southern tradition/preppy with modern day hip-eco friendliness. Great symbol of growing love…awww =)"Sweet Pea Seeds + 100% Biodegradable Bowl with our classic pink ribbon. Our exclusive Eco-Friendly Garden Kit makes it easy to grow a pretty bowl of fragrant dwarf sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus). Everything inside this kit is designed to be earth friendly. From the 100% biodegradable pot (made of rice hulls – that’s right… it is not plastic!) and Heirloom Seeds to the packaging. Note: This is a Seed Kit and does not contain live plants. The kit is based on the 3R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle
For the dirty south I say a bottle of "Southern Comfort. And maybe for one of the others you could put Benefit’s Georgia "just peachy" face powder. ;) It’s fantastic!!!
When I think "Southern" I think ladies porch sippin’ Sweet Tea and Mint Juleps! So for "dirty south" I’d say a Cocktail Shaker Set! I found a nice orange one here: Summer Martini Set (they also have mini shakers in fun animal prints!)As for the Preppy basket, I always think of down home cooking, so why not a handstamped "Barnhouse" kitchen towel set and a small "Southern Belly" recipe book! You can’t go wrong with Southern Cooking & Drinks!
Every traditional and preppy Southern gal needs a pair of pearl earrings! She will wear them everywhere from the gym to a cocktail party. They have some great options at http://www.pearlsonly.com. I just bought my bridesmaids some in pink and they were a big hit!
Well, the first commenter sure beat me to it – but http://www.fireflyvodka.com/ is a must. A MUST!How about some BBQ, too? (Eastern NC style, please.) Our local chain restaurant is now making it possible to buy BBQ online. Yes, you read that right! Taste of Carolina Pack might be just right! https://scnbnc.com/store/index.phpAaaaand while we’re dreaming big here, how about some cuuuute boots? Every Southern girl’s gotta have her a good pair… because as you know, these boots were made for walkin’! http://www.crowsnesttrading.com/product/7017/79
For the traditional, great cookbooks filled with Southern style recipes…Paula Deen & Friends: Living It Up, Southern Style http://www.amazon.com/Paula-Deen-Friends-Living-Southern/dp/0743267222/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1256349308&sr=8-8Beyond Grits and Gravy – The South’s All Time Favorite Recipeshttp://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Grits-Gravy-All-Time-Favorite/dp/1893062473/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1256349308&sr=8-16
For preppy and traditional….you must have linen coasters/cocktail napkins. Monogrammed of couse! So very essential for any southern belle that entertains on the regular! http://www.revivalbristolri.com/molico.html
For the traditional and preppy, I would add some of Apple Barn’s apple butter http://www.applebarncidermill.com/product_detail.cfm?pid=121&cid=23
How about a beautifully designed card with a classic mint julep recipe, a few of the specialty Kentucky Derby Glasses that are designed each year, and a personalized sash/ribbon and maybe some feathers to doll up that perfect Derby Day hat or just spring for one of the delightful concoctions to add some flair to the basket. The "Steel Magnolias" of the south love their hats! Just look at the Red Hat society! This would definitely be for the traditional/preppy basket.http://southernfood.about.com/od/kentuckyrecipes/r/bl80419e.htmhttp://www.thoroughbredtraditions.com/sigser.htmlhttp://www.deescrafts.com/hats/2009/hatGallery2.htmlhttp://www.maggiemaedesigns.com/SaraDer80-001.htmhttp://www.delmarhat.com/claf.htmlhttp://www.delmarhat.com/evgilosoti.html
MINI PECAN PIESI am definitely including these in my own wedding because:1. They’re representative of "Traditional" Southern Fare2. They’re BEYOND delicious. (Not to mention cute in their mini-form!)http://www.joecwilliams.com/productimages/pies.jpg
There are very few Southern women who can’t help but belt out the lyrics of Deana Carter’s "Strawberry Wine.""Like strawberry wine and seventeenThe hot july moon saw everythingMy first taste of love oh bittersweetGreen on the vineLike strawberry wine!"I’d love to do a sweet and preppy southern basket with:Strawberry Wine:http://www.keelandcurleywinery.com/wines/strawberry-riesling.htmSouthern Strawberry Growing Kit:http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/179-9489559-3155157?ASIN=B000GT726U&AFID=Froogle&LNM=B000GT726U|Buzzy_Porcelain_Strawberry_Grow_Kit&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B000GT726U&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001Maybe some home-made Spoonbread and old-fashioned strawberry candies!Oh, and how sweet is Becky Rutledge’s book, Miss Becky’s Charm School:http://www.amazon.com/Miss-Beckys-Charm-School-Southern/dp/B001EO6YTC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1256441053&sr=8-2
As for "Dirty South" how cool is this die-cut gift bag from Plum Party!http://www.plumparty.com/19135/%27boot+scootin%27+gift+bag-large.htmlAs for Boot-scootin’ accoutrements:The Dixie Dictionary"http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Dixie-Dictionary/Thomas-W-Howard/e/9781581732047Mini Bottles of So-Co and Jack DanielsOld Fashioned Coke BottlesCrackerJacks and/or mini-moonpiesYou can buy tin Harmonica’s in bulk at:http://www.joissu.com/prodinfo.asp?number=18-629
For the dirty south gift bag I would include Anson Mills grits. http://www.ansonmills.com/They are awesome and will leave you guest something to eat southern after the wedding is over.
Wow! What a lot of great ideas you all shared! My choice would be Proper Pearls. This is a must have ! http://www.southernproper.com/store/ladies/proper-accessories/proper-pearls.html
For the Dirty South basket, I would include some Fat Mama’s Knock-You-Naked Margarita Mix! Yum! http://www.fatmamastamales.com/index.php?mod=shop
Almost everything in the South comes in a mason jar. Now I have seen it all with Bangerang Bakeshop. They sell cupcakes in mason jars!!! They even sell a cupcake for the cure and proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen. In the South, we love to support a cause. You don’t get more Southern preppy than a Cupcake in a Mason Jar!! Can’t wait to get mine in the mail.http://www.bangerangbakeshop.com/
I grew up in New Orleans and could never get enough of this jam with cream cheese and buttermilk biscuits: http://www.tabasco.com/tabasco_tent/condiments/pepper_jelly.cfm. I’ll add it to the dirty south category since it would probably stain seersucker.
For the preppy basket… a gift card to a, brand new to the market, customize your own handbang company called ‘Lucy Grey’http://www.lucygrey.com/The bags are super cute and stylish and the mission of the company as explained on their website aligns so well with the traditional southern value of community and loving life as you do it together!
So much talk about good food and drinks is making me hungry! For the classic southern gal I allways think of parasols to cover from the sothern sunlight.http://www.pamelasparasols.com/newsite/wnc2.htmlI would love to suggest the recipe for Geogias Browns grits but its top secret =(
So….I know I’m a couple hours late but I wanted to say porkrhinds are a great southern dirty treat! We used them in our southern inspired welcome bags and they were a big hit! Moonpies are a great sweet treat from the south….and if you’re including Moonpies you know you have to have an RC Cola to wash it down! Moonpies and RC Cola are definitely a southern staple. Also, for another idea I love the look of mint julep cups with a mini bottle of kentucky’s finest bourbon, woodford reserve. DELICIOUS! Or Bourbon balls will work too!
