After looking at their fair share of wedding venues (eight!), Dani and Andrew knew that Legare Waring House was the one for them. They were drawn to the pristine beauty of the plantation, and especially loved the Avenue of Oaks (how could you not?)! With this beautiful backdrop chosen, they worked with their planner and florist, Fox Events, to create wild and natural florals that were not only sweetly feminine, but also the perfect complement to the glamorous mix of metallic elements in their design. And how fun is it that their officiant was the same friend who introduced them on a blind date five and a half years prior?

I probably tried on close to 50 dresses from at least five bridal boutiques before I found THE ONE at Sarah Seven. I went with my sister-in-law and a close friend, and the minute I walked out of the dressing room, they both screamed, “THAT’S IT!”

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? Yes, there was no question whether or not we were going to do one! First look photos are my favorite pictures from weddings–they’re always so sweet.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend, who ended up officiating our wedding. I knew Andrew’s sister prior to meeting Andrew, but it wasn’t until a Christmas party when this mutual friend suggested to Andrew that he had to meet “this girl, Dani” that we were set up.

We each wrote our own vows, which was fun, but challenging! It’s hard to express those feelings in just a few sentences. We think our videographer’s favorite line from the vows was Andrew’s line: “The joy you have given me over the past five and a half years has saturated my soul, and I promise for the rest of my life to try with every fiber of my being to repay you.” He included it in both our trailer and full video!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? After Lauren Fox took us to eight wedding venues, we knew that Legare Waring House was the one for us. We couldn’t get over the pristine beauty of the venue–so stunning and green, and we ESPECIALLY loved the Avenue of Oaks!

Our wedding flowers were wild and natural, yet utterly feminine, and fit the outdoor plantation perfectly! The color scheme played nicely with the grays and natural wood elements of our wedding, while the mix of metallic elements added the perfect amount of glamour.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The florals were stunning and the food, superb. The band, Super Deluxe, nailed every song; we’ve received so many compliments about them! Cru Catering provided the best wedding food we’ve ever tried, period. Overall, we could not have asked for a more perfect day!

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Take care of all the big things first (find a wedding planner, book photographers, videographers, a band), and then take your time choosing all of the smaller details. But don’t procrastinate too much–the last thing you want is to be stressed about things close to your big day!

Tell us all about the proposal! Andrew’s sister was going to be in Chicago for a visit to see friends. Recognizing the opportunity, Andrew set the wheels in motion. He flew to St. Louis to ask my father for my hand in marriage, put the finishing touches on the ring, and invited family to Chicago for the weekend to (hopefully) celebrate. After planning an elaborate ruse revolving around a fake Cubs game, brunch, and a photographer, Andrew’s plan was thrown into chaos when I realized I needed to work most of the day on Friday, April 17. Panicked (even more than he already was), Andrew proposed in our apartment, just the two of us. He had arranged for a celebratory brunch at a restaurant, where the entire family was there to surprise me! Later that night, Andrew invited all of our closest friends/family over for the perfect engagement party.
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 130
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We repurposed the “blessing over the wine,” which was read by my great uncle and his wife. It was a beautiful tribute to both of our heritages.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. Wild Flour did the most beautiful-two layer cake. The larger bottom tier was vanilla cake with dulce de leche buttercream and salted caramel; the smaller top tier was vanilla cake with lemon curd, coconut buttercream, and toasted coconut.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? It can be challenging to stay within a budget. It’s great to have wedding planners (like ours) who are there to help guide you to stay within your budget, and to advise you on areas where you can make cuts that won’t jeopardize the look you’re trying to accomplish!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We just got back from a delayed honeymoon in Antigua, which was incredible! We look forward to enjoying time together before we add to our family in a few years :) We also look forward to celebrating with all of our friends with weddings around the corner!

With school starting in the coming weeks, it’s inevitable that fall is right around the corner. I am all for pumpkin-everything, but Kristen and Rick’s wedding has me hanging onto sweet summer days for just a bit longer. With the help of A Fox Event, Kristen and Rick planned an intimate summer soirée at the Legare Waring House that allowed them to spend a bit of extra time with each guest (and stretch their budget a bit further!). With personal details weaved throughout, like Japanese Aralia leaves from her mother’s garden, and fun pineapple decor sprinkled into their classic design, I can see why Kristin’s joyful smile went from ear-to-ear!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I knew I wanted a full skirt and I sure did not compromise! I expected to choose a very simple, classic style, but instead, I fell in love with the rich lace bodice on my dress as soon as I tried it on. It was a very special moment that I was lucky enough to share with my mom, sisters, mother-in-law, and cousins.

I wanted a wild-looking, white, summery bouquet full of variety and greenery. Fox Events made me a gorgeous bouquet of peonies, astilbe, tulips, and a variety of garden roses, plus peach Juliet garden roses for a small pop of color. The greens included seeded eucalyptus, Italian ruscus, and smilax, and we added a Japanese Aralia leaf from my mom’s garden!

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? I felt very strongly about Rick seeing me for the first time as I made my way down the aisle, and he felt the same way, so we opted to keep it traditional. Because we had plenty of evening sunlight to work with in June, we did not have to worry about having our photos done before the ceremony. I absolutely loved seeing him tear up!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? I strove to contract all local businesses and tried to find vendors who used local products. For example, Salthouse Catering’s menu was farm-to-table and seasonal, and ICEBOX offered local beer and liquor companies such as Palmetto Brewery and Striped Pig. The groom and groomsmen’s bowties were handmade in Mount Pleasant, and the maids gifts came from Spartina 449 of Daufuskie Island. Also Southern was our married monogram featured in different places, such as above the porch door, on the cocktail napkins, and on our champagne flutes (I also wore my maiden monogram as I got ready for the day). We had a classic coconut cake which is “very Charleston” and so delicious. The night before the wedding, we cut Japanese Aralia leaves from my mom’s garden. We used one in my bouquet and put one on each place setting. It was a really simple way to make my bouquet and the tablescapes more dramatic and personally significant (I carried a bit of my mom down the aisle with me!). And of course, the symbol of hospitality–the pineapple–was placed throughout the venue decor.

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We married on a Friday evening and saved an enormous amount! I also had my envelopes hand-lettered by Whitlock Design (on Etsy) instead of calligraphed, and I ordered my veil through Etsy. I also replaced some florals with lanterns (and pineapples, of course!). Lastly, instead of renting a dance floor, we arranged the tables so that there was enough space to dance on the venue’s existing patio.

By far, our favorite detail of the wedding was the beautiful cafe lighting over our reception. The weather worked in our favor and we were lucky enough to forgo a tent, which allowed for the historic home at our venue to serve as a gorgeous backdrop. The openness of the patio space complete with the cafe lighting gave the reception a very romantic, summery feel. My favorite personal detail of the wedding was incorporating my beloved grandmothers, who have both passed away, into the ceremony. I wore pink wedding shoes in honor of my mom’s mom, and my paternal grandmother’s chaplain married us. I also tied both late grandmothers’ wedding rings to my bouquet, and my sisters wore them the rest of the night following the ceremony.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We first met at Stratton Mountain in Vermont as teenagers. Rick was competing in a snowboarding event and I was there with a close friend of mine. Rick and I realized that we hit the slopes at the same home mountain, and over the next few years, we unexpectedly ran into each other time after time. In the spring of my senior year of high school, we reconnected when Rick suggested we meet for coffee. We began dating shortly after I began my freshman year of college, and despite several intervals of living a great distance from each other, we’ve been together ever since!
Tell us all about the proposal! Rick had my ring hidden under our bed for almost six months prior to proposing. There were many nights when it almost came out early, but he had made arrangements to fly us home to celebrate with friends and family just a few days after the proposal, so he held off. Rick had made a reservation at a historic brunch spot nestled in a canyon of the Santa Monica Mountains (we currently live in California). After a beautiful drive up oceanside cliffs, we entered the tranquility of the inner canyon, golden with the season of fall. Under a giant California oak, Rick went down on one knee. We reveled in our brunch, knowing the exciting secret we were keeping from those around us. A few days later, we flew to Charleston to celebrate with family and friends.
When did y’all get married? June 10, 2016
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 95
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My cousin recited Romans 12:9-16. It will always remind us to grow our love sincerely by putting each other first, and ourselves second.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Rick and I had a classical guitarist play traditional music for the ceremony; I walked down the aisle with my dad to “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.” Our first dance was to “Forever and Ever, Amen” by Randy Travis. We are big classic country fans and just love this song! Rick and I traveled to Austin last year and learned to two-step, which was super fun. I love to slow dance, so I chose “Tennessee Whiskey” by Chris Stapleton for our last dance. It was so romantic and one of my very favorite memories of the night.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? We discussed in detail how and when to merge our finances and invest in our future together. We spent a lot of time setting financial and personal goals as a couple.

What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? You may feel rushed in the beginning of planning to secure your vendors, but I think it is really important to consider your desired guest count first. Holding a more intimate wedding allowed us to have more time with each guest, which was priceless. It also allowed our budget to go further and include extra personal details and a few splurges.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? Rick and I are finally enjoying post-wedding and post-graduate school tranquility! We are working hard to save for a home and relocate back to the South. We look forward to spending time with each other and our families, and perhaps starting a family of our own down the road.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding? It was important to us that guests treated our ceremony as a worship, despite it being outside of a church. We also wanted to see guests’ faces instead of cameras and phones as we walked up the aisle for the first time as newlyweds. We were inspired by Southern Weddings’ “Unplugged Wedding” post and wrote our own notecards, which we affixed to the back of every seat. It was a huge success!

Growing up in Charleston, Lindsay knew she wanted to get married at a plantation home, and had her fair share of beautiful places to choose from. I’m sure we can all agree that most anywhere in the Lowcountry would have been simply lovely! In the end, Lindsay’s love for the Old South was the deciding factor, and she and Ty chose the Legare Waring House for their wedding. It not only made Lindsay feel completely at home, but its beautiful Spanish moss and plantation house porch also made the perfect backdrop for their classic Southern celebration. While their venue was just the right place for them to exchange their vows, their hearts were focused on tying together past family traditions with new traditions for their future family. Lindsay said that “focusing on the future that we were building kept the stress of the wedding low.”

My something old was lace cut from mother’s wedding dress, which I wrapped around my bouquet. Something new was a bracelet and earrings from my mom. My something borrowed was my grandmother’s sapphire ring, originally given to her by her grandfather. My something blue was a necklace my papa had made for me from one of his baby rings. He had necklaces made for all four of his grandchildren when he got sick.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Definitely walking down the aisle. That was a one of a kind moment–just knowing that we were about to cross a huge milestone was so overwhelming and exciting!

About a year before the big day, I took my mom, grandmother, and sister dress shopping with me. It was the classic story of trying on those first few dresses, then trying on about 20 more before your gut tells you that first dress was the one. I fell in love with the simplicity of it and the light, flowy, breathable fabric that hugged all the right spots!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? I’ve always been in love with the Old South, so I knew I wanted a Charleston plantation wedding. I grew up here, and Legare-Waring House made me feel at home.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? The entire venue screamed “Southern,” thanks to the Spanish moss draped from the old oak trees, the plantation house porch, and the hanging vines.

Describe your wedding flowers. We had white peonies, cream and sahara patience garden roses, sweet pea, jasmine vine, seeded eucalyptus, peach Juliet garden roses, dusty miller leaves, cream ranunculus, peach stock, and spirea.

For my walk down the aisle, a string quartet played “A Thousand Years.” Our first dance was to the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody,” which is the song that my grandparents danced to on their wedding day.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. According to Ty, he and I met long before I remember, back in 2008. I didn’t believe it until I found a random picture I took with my cousin, Callie, where Ty was in the background! Callie used to date Ty’s best friend, Chris, so they were always invited to the same events, and their paths always crossed. Ty constantly reminds me that the night we met, I did not speak to him, and ignored him on the way out. I still refuse to believe that was the case! A year passed, and Ty and I would see each other every now and then, but never truly got to know one another until 2009 when I came home for Christmas break. Callie invited me over to her new place, and when I arrived, I saw Ty sitting on the couch. I introduced myself, only for Ty to reply, “Yeah…we’ve met before…” Assuming any possibility for a friendship was lost, I just laughed it off and changed the subject. Later that night, Callie, Chris, Ty, and I decided to go to the infamous IBG (Island Bar and Grille). This is where the magic really happened. Callie came over to me what I thought of Ty, and before I could reply, Ty walked over and put his arm around me. Instead of asking me out, he said, “I need you to pretend to be my girlfriend for a minute, that biker lady over there is trying to ask me out.” Romantic right?! Needless to say, we kept in touch ever since that night. I returned to Columbia, but Ty began visiting Gamecock country all the time. We decided to become an official couple on March 16, 2010. We have been through a lot together since, and know, through our experiences, we will be able to get through anything. On December 15, 2013, Ty got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife, forever.
Tell us all about the proposal! I knew it was coming; I just wasn’t sure when. Every time a big event was coming up–birthday, graduation, surprise camping trip, etc.–I just knew Ty was going to pop the question, and I was wrong every time. Ty caught on quickly that I knew it was coming, so he knew he had to ask when I least expected it! Every year, Ty and I love going to the James Island County Christmas lights. We both enjoy the Christmas season so much, so we make a point to go every year, and this year was no different! Once we arrived, we decided to head to Santa’s Workshop and walk around, as we do every year, but first, we had to stop at the mistletoe light for a quick picture! When it came time for Ty and I to take our picture, we posed for a few shots, and then Ty looked at me and said, “Do you know how much I love you?” I responded, “Yes, I love you too, Ty!” Tyler said, “No, do you know how much I love you?” Confused, I remarked, “Umm, yes, I think so?” This is where is became a blur to me, as I saw him reach into his jacket pocket and pull something out. He then got down on one knee and asked me, “Will you do me the honor of being my wife, forever?” I was SHOCKED, and of course, said YES!” Although it was simple, it was perfect! I couldn’t imagine being asked any other way!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? My uncle read “The Art of Marriage” and Ty’s father read Ecclesiastes 4:9-12.
How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? We bought a home together while engaged and started planning for the future, dreaming up holiday parties we could throw and traditions we would want to start for our future family. Focusing on the future that we were building kept the stress of the wedding low.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? Prioritizing what I had always dreamed of including vs. things I had never given much thought to. Things on the bottom of that list needed the smallest budget–for us, the cake was low on the list because we aren’t cake people, so we opted out of extravagant cake and dessert options.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? It’ll be special regardless of how much you spend, so keep it simple! If you’re creative enough, you can have a dream wedding without spending a fortune!
