LulaKate is a longtime favorite of the Southern Weddings gals–we’ve featured their “classic with a twist” bridesmaid dresses more times than we can count (find them in our editorials here, here, and here), as well as had the privilege of rocking a few LulaKate styles ourselves at the V6 launch party. Their booth is also a favorite stop any time we head to Bridal Market–there’s nothing better than a little dose of Charleston hospitality in the middle of NYC! Since LulaKate just launched a gorgeous new website and plenty of new styles and fabrics, we thought it would be the perfect time for a little re-introduction. Designer Katherine McDonald kindly answered a few of our questions about this beloved brand, and Kat Harris provided plenty of fun photos that totally capture the vibe of the LulaKate girl. Enjoy!

Tell us about the beginnings of LulaKate—why did you want to start a bridesmaid line, and how did you get started? My bridesmaid line evolved from my original ready-to-wear line. Some of my ready-to-wear customers were asking me to design their bridesmaid and wedding dresses, and after saying no a number of times, I finally said yes. After the first wedding, I was hooked. I love the process of getting to know a bride, her family, and her friends. Being part of such a special day in someone’s life is truly an honor.

What sets LulaKate apart from other bridesmaid brands? We are proudly sewn in the USA and have some of the best customer service in the industry.

What is your single best tip for a bride about to start shopping for her wedding gown? Remember to purchase the dress you love. Consider loved ones’ opinions, but make the final decision yourself.

What is your current favorite wedding dress in your collection? If you were to get married tomorrow, which dress would you wear? The Brooklyn is my favorite dress from the 2016 Collection. I would wear either her or the LaMour from the 2014 collection.

What is your favorite memory from your own wedding day? My dad playing the drums with the band!

Do you have a favorite LulaKate memory? Seeing Carolina Herrera on the street of NYC earlier this year and the first time I went to India in the early years of my career.

What is the single greatest lesson you’ve learned in business? Never take anything for granted.

Name three items every gal should have in her closet. Something from your mom, something from your grandmother, and something you can pass down to your daughter/daughter-in-law.

Thank you so much, Katherine! Be sure to check out the beautiful, newly designed LulaKate website here–especially between December 10-13, when they’ll be hosting their sample sale! You can also follow along with LulaKate on social media here:

Bride Sarah shares her classic Cypress Trees Plantation wedding.

Please meet today’s bride, Sarah! Her South Carolina wedding to Dustin was filled with intentional details and lots of Southern charm – the perfect combination in my book! And as a matter of fact, Sara was voted “most likely to have a dream wedding” in high school. Something I’m sure her past classmates would confirm she absolutely accomplished! You’re going to want to keep scrolling to see more of Sarah and Dustin’s classic, blue and white celebration.

SW hugs to Jennings King Photography!

What were some of the most meaningful or special parts of your wedding? That’s a hard question, as I literally tried to make everything meaningful to us since we are a very sentimental couple! I was also voted “most likely to have a dream wedding” in high school, so I had a lot to live up to :) To start things off, I had some of my grandmother’s lace from her wedding dress and some of my mother’s lace from her wedding dress sewn on the inside of my dress with a patch. I had my seamstress make a handkerchief with my grandmother’s lace, my mother’s lace, and a little fabric from my dress, embroidered with “love always,” and gave that to my mom on the day of the wedding. My bouquet had part of my grandmother’s jewelry attached to it. I also had on a pearl bracelet my dad had given to my when I was twelve for confirmation at church. The white Bible used in the ceremony was my father’s that was given to him at birth. The cross that stood next to us during the ceremony traveled from my home church along with the preacher that officiated. The sweet grass basket the flower girl carried has been my Easter basket ever since I was little. The bagpipe songs were played at our college graduation. Our wedding cake was prepared by a family member. Lastly, our dog, Walker, and my parents’ dog, Jack, were able to visit us right before we took pictures with our wedding party.

Tell us the highlights of finding your wedding dress. I visited three places to find my wedding dress and found my dress on the third try. While I loved just about every dress I put on, my main goal was to find a dress that “looked like me.” On our third trip, my mom and I picked several dresses to try on at Fabulous Frocks in Charleston. I chose my wedding dress particularly because I liked the fabric – crazy, I know! After trying on many dresses in the store, I narrowed it down to two. My dress had a skirt that was detachable, and attached with a removable bow. The sales consultant said, “That dress does have a bow that you can put with it, but most people don’t.” Little did she know that bows are my thing — I love them! The other dress I was considering had a blush undertone. I loved them both and couldn’t decide, so my mom and the sales consultant each wrote down her favorite, knowing that if my mom told me I would probably pick the one she said because that is just how I am. After thinking it through, I chose the bow gown — and it was the one my mom had picked, too! (Which made me so, so happy!) The dress was everything I wanted: simple, elegant, and classic.

Did you decide to do a first look? We did decide to do a first look, primarily to ease our nerves a bit. We were skeptical at first, but would highly recommend it now. Getting a chance to share that special moment in private is something we will always cherish!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? The venue was on Edisto Island, which is our favorite place! My parents have a beach house on Edisto, and Dustin and I go there religiously to relax and spend time with family and friends. I knew immediately when we stepped foot on Cypress Trees Plantation it was the one. Being so close to the water really made us feel the true beauty of God’s creation.

What was Southern about your wedding? We both grew up in the South and have held true to our roots, so most things were Southern about our wedding! There were Southern touches everywhere, from the shrimp and grits cake to the men’s Charleston sweet grass roses as boutonnieres. The tables at the reception had beautiful blue flowers and oyster shells as centerpieces, and we danced the night away to Motown and beach music songs. The shag, which is the South Carolina state dance, was danced by friends and family on the dance floor.

What did you serve for your wedding cake? We served a delicious cake that was made by a family member. It was a four-tiered vanilla cake with chocolate-covered candies on each tier, placed on a wicker stand. We also served mini key lime pie tarts and gave everyone a sugar cookie with the outline of a Labrador retriever in honor of our dog, Walker.

Tell us your love story in one sentence. Meeting my best friend and falling in love made my life complete.
Tell us all about the proposal! Dustin asked me to be his wife on March 17, 2017 on Edisto Beach! We had been planning to go to the beach for the weekend with my parents for awhile, but I had no idea what else was in store. Dustin bought the ring from Windsor Jewelers in Augusta, GA, which is just outside of my hometown of Aiken, SC — this is special, because Dustin asked my Mom to help him pick the ring out! The ring wasn’t scheduled to be ready until Friday the 17th, so Dustin arranged for my parents to pick it up before heading down to Edisto for our weekend together. Luckily (and with a lot of stalling by Dustin), my parents beat us down there and were able to hide the ring in a towel closet in the bathroom. When we got to the house, Dustin went to the restroom and then asked if I wanted to go out on the beach and see if my parents were out there. After taking just a few steps outside, Dustin proposed! It was all coordinated perfectly, as my hidden parents and brother were able to see and photograph the whole thing!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. We had a harpist and a bagpiper play music during the ceremony. The bagpiper played “Highland Cathedral” and “Scotland the Brave,” which were both played at our college graduation. Our first dance song was “With this Ring” by The Platters, because it’s fun and upbeat and we love oldies!
What was your favorite thing about wedding planning? My favorite thing about planning our wedding would be deciding on flowers, decorations, and our invitation suite — some of my easiest decisions! Those were places where we were able to add our special touches and display our personalities.

Oh my gosh, I LOVE the elegant white color palette of the bride & groom portraits. So classy! And the portrait with their dogs is adorable.

Bride Shelby shares her classic, formal affair at The William Aiken House!

I’m always excited to introduce y’all to our brides, but when one is named after the movie character I’ve probably quoted the most over my lifetime (can I get a ‘pink is my signature color!’?), I’m bound to use too many exclamation points! Please meet today’s bride, Shelby! Yes, y’all, she is named after one of our favorite Southern belles from the movie “Steel Magnolias” and her Charleston wedding to Alex is sure to have you reaching for your pearls.

With her Savannah roots and current residence in Texas, she and Alex created a wedding that was an amalgamation of Southern styles and traditions. “The Southern hostess in me had to greet our guests with a true Southern cocktail,” she says. “We chose a mint julep — in a monogrammed cup, of course!” But that, friends, was just the beginning: keep reading to hear how our Shelby made her namesake proud with so many sweet Southern details. Spoiler alert: there was no armadillo cake, but there was a classic, all-white one, so we’ll call that a fair trade!

Thanks for sharing, Sara Bee!

Tell us your love story in one sentence. We had assigned seats next to one another in Art History class, and the rest was history.
Tell us all about the proposal! Alex proposed on Christmas morning at my grandmother’s lake house. It is a special place for my family and it means a lot that the lake now has special significance for Alex too.

I kept telling the bridal consultants I wanted “more.” I was determined to find a dress with a big impact that was classic and interesting.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? The William Aiken House is so stunning! We really liked that the space felt very private even though it is located in the heart of Charleston. I fell in love with the striking white pergola against the green boxwood, I had already picked dark green and white as my wedding colors so it just fit so perfectly! I also appreciated the versatility the venue had to offer.

What were some of the most meaningful or special parts of your ceremony? Did you write your own vows? We did not write our own vows. I think the most memorable part of the ceremony was when my veil flew off as I walked down the aisle. Everyone laughed and it lightened the mood in the best way possible!

I walked down the aisle to “Meditation” from the opera, Thais. A family friend recommended it and I loved it because it was beautiful and unique. Our first dance song was “Tupelo Honey” by Van Morrison. It fit really well since I am from the region where Tupelo honey is produced. We tied it all together with our party favor which was a small jar of Savannah Bee Company Tupelo honey. We incorporated the mini jars into the tablescape. Each jar had a note tied to it that said “Love is sweet, Thank you for making our day complete.” This was one of my favorite details!

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We kept the cake design pretty simple. Also we cut back on the flowers on the tables and the place settings. No one remembers what the fork they used looked like, just if what they ate off of it was good. We also didn’t have a videographer.

After the ceremony, our guests nibbled on a seafood display of oysters and shrimp cocktail, and passed canapés included tomato pie bites, fried green tomatoes with BBQ on top, and bacon-wrapped scallops. After a traditional plated dinner, Alex and I had our first dance to “Tupelo Honey” by Van Morrison, and then invited our guests to join us as soul band Liquid Pleasure got everyone up and dancing on the rocking chair-lined dance floor.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? Yes, we did do a first look. I wanted to share as much of the day with Alex as possible. It also worked better with our timeline so we could spend more time with our guests as well.
What did you serve for your wedding cake or dessert? Why did you choose it? We served wedding cake. We had lemon cake with lemon mascarpone buttercream frosting and the other flavor was white cake with raspberries and chocolate buttercream frosting. We had it passed and displayed so that we could start the dancing earlier instead of waiting for it to be served.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding? I loved carrying themes throughout the wedding, like the Tupelo honey as our first dance song and takeaway gift. And including the monogram from the invitation throughout the evening in the program, koozies, drink stirrers, and cocktail napkins. I also provided lounge-type seating around the dance floor with rocking chairs and a sofa so that those who did not want to dance could still be a part of the fun! They were all full all night.
What was Southern about your wedding? Since I am from Savannah, Alex is from Maryland, and we live in Texas, our wedding was an amalgamation of Southern styles and traditions. The Southern hostess in me had to greet our guests with a true Southern cocktail – a mint julep, in a monogrammed cup of course! Our monogram from the invitation was carried throughout the event. For my something old and borrowed, I wore my mother’s pearl earrings. Alex wore a monogrammed tux shirt and Lucchese cowboy boots with his white dinner jacket. All the groomsmen had matching green Vineyard Vines bow ties and showed plenty of high school pride. The bridesmaids donned crisp white button-downs and forest green shantung ball skirts. The ceremony took place under the shade of a beautiful magnolia tree, which was extra special to me since I am named after Shelby from the movie “Steel Magnolia.”
What was your favorite thing about wedding planning? I loved bringing all of my own ideas to fruition.
What was the hardest part about planning your wedding? Making so many decisions.
What was your most memorable moment from your wedding day? I honestly don’t think I can pick just one! The best advice we got was to pause right after the ceremony, before walking back down the aisle and just look at all your guests. That was a very special moment for Alex and me.
What advice would you give to someone currently planning a wedding? Don’t sweat the small stuff. No one will know the details that are missing! I also found it really helpful to go back and look at my original ideas; it helped me keep it all tied together.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding? None of it would have been possible without all the hard work of amazing vendors. Especially with a destination wedding, having wonderful vendors that you can trust and rely on was such a blessing!

What an incredible wedding dress. I’ve yet to see a groom wear a white jacket though and it contrasts so well with his groomsmen.
