Full Name: Emily Sanders
Where you call home: Oxford, Mississippi
Things you’d write home to your Momma about: My mom is my right-hand woman on most wedding days, so she’s pretty up to speed on what we’re doing around here! Side note: she makes the best “employee” because she reminds me to drink water, to take a break to eat, and she can look at my face and know when something is wrong. I know that she would be proud of the number of rehearsal dinners I’ve been invited to as a guest because my clients truly become friends. She also had her proud “standing up clapping in the bleachers Momma moment” when I was selected as one of Mississippi’s 50 Leading Business Women last year!
Location/Coverage: Mississippi and Tennessee. We absolutely love destination affairs, too!
How I got into weddings: When you’re 20 years old and you’ve changed your major more times than you can count and your best friend tells you to switch to Hospitality Management so that y’all can take classes together, you think it’s a great idea! Turns out, it was. My first day of class, I knew event planning was for me. After college, during my time working as a venue coordinator, I made the best florist, photographer, and baker friends a girl can have! As the market in my hometown started to shift, several of them came to me and encouraged me to start my own business. I was content in my job and petrified of doing business taxes, so I didn’t exactly jump on the opportunity. I began to pray that if God thought this was the path I was meant to take, He would open certain doors. After I selfishly requested A LOT of doors to open and every one of my requests was granted, I knew it was time. On my last week of work at the venue, I cried in a parking lot because I had not yet booked a wedding. That afternoon, I booked two brides.
Favorite thing about weddings in the South? My favorite thing about Southern weddings is that they’re very much like Southern girls. They encompass a reverence for tradition and the classics, but they secretly have a little bit of rebellion in them. It’s fun to pull that out of each bride and to find the one thing she’s “supposed” to do that she will rebel against.
Favorite part of a wedding day? Hands down, my favorite part of a wedding day is the ten minutes I get to walk the couple through the reception venue prior to guests arriving. This moment usually happens right after the ceremony. We swoop the couple over to the venue immediately after so that they can take in the view of all their hard work. We then hide them in the back so that they enjoy each other’s company completely uninterrupted for a precious 15 minutes. After a day spent with checklists and timelines, it’s a rush of relief as you get to the point in the day when everything starts to slow down.
Best piece of advice you can give to brides and grooms? Brides: wear wedges!
