Many of you may not know that I used to work for a country music station. A live feed of the station was played over a loudspeaker throughout our entire offices, so I may even be able to rival Miss Emily when it comes to country music trivia! One of my favorite songs became Lee Brice’s Love Like Crazy, because in the song, Lee encourages couples to “overuse ‘I love you.'” To me, those simple words are such an important aspect of marriage, sometimes being the only thing to say in a circumstance. So, when I read that Lauren + Adam’s reverend had them begin their traditional vows by just telling each other “I love you,” my heart leapt! Lauren also said that with these three simple words, all their nerves were gone. I imagine this was such a wonderful moment to witness.

Big hugs to Robyn Van Dyke, one of our darling Blue Ribbon Vendors, for sharing their big day with us!

One of my absolute favorite moments happened during the ceremony. Reverend Motley asked everyone to bow his or her head as he prayed for our marriage, and as he was ending the prayer, Adam pulled me in and kissed me on the forehead. I love that moment in particular because it felt like it was just the two of us up there together, even when there were 200 sets of eyes watching us. Another favorite moment was the time spent with my bridesmaids before the ceremony. We all wore oversized button-up shirts, which included monogrammed pockets (a DIY by my sister/MOH) and enjoyed sipping our champagne through straws and mason jars from Shop Sweet Lulu. That morning, I also received notes of encouragement and sweet wishes from all of the girls in my college sorority. These little moments brought me so much peace and joy and that I will always treasure.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. To my surprise, finding my dress was the very first check off of our wedding to-do list. My mother and now mother-in-law decided on a whim to take me to Victorian Rose Bridals in Raleigh to try on a few dresses. Knowing it was still very early in the wedding planning process, I had little expectation of finding “the one” already, but it just so happened that the second dress I tried on was everything I wanted. It had ivory alencon lace over champagne charmeuse, an exposed back, and a sweeping train–it was perfect!

While all the grooms we feature are quite dapper, I am dying over this polka dot tie! Too much fun!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? Genesis 2:7, 18, 21-24 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-13
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them.
The music for our ceremony was soft and elegant. We hired a violinist and kept to wedding ceremony classics. Adam and I knew from the very beginning that we wanted The Craig Woolard Band for the reception. The band is not only the perfect combination of beach music, Motown, and country, but they are also the band that entertained several of our first date nights. For our first dance, we danced to “Nothing Can Change This Love” by Sam Cook and for the daddy/daughter dance, we danced to “My Girl” by the Temptations.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? Adam and I decided not to do a first look, because we both liked the idea of keeping it traditional. I will never forget what an amazing feeling it was to see his reaction as I walked down the aisle!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Although we did not write our own vows, I loved that our Reverend had us begin our vows by just telling each other “I love you.” It took all my nerves away!

Our reception menu was Southern-inspired all the way! We served chicken and biscuits, BBQ sliders with coleslaw, green beans, sweet potato mash, sweet tea (of course!), and several other traditional Southern favorites. I also loved how our favors came out–we gave our guests navy koozies with bow ties on them–and I love that Adam wore the needlepoint belt I made for him.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Adam and I are just about as different as they come. He’s from the country; I grew up in the city. He’s the youngest of three boys; I’m the oldest of three girls. He loves being in the spotlight; I’m perfectly content standing in the back. But opposites attract, right? We first met while attending a summer camp called Camp Willow Run, where we were introduced by my counselor. We kept in touch here and there and eventually ended up going to the same college. We also both worked as summer staff at the same camp where we met as campers. Adam hardly talked to me all summer, so it completely took me by surprise when he asked me to be his date to his brother’s wedding on the last day of camp. Ironically enough, Adam’s brother was marrying the very same counselor who had originally introduced us. Small world!
Tell us all about the proposal! Adam once told me that no one expects to get engaged in the morning and he was most definitely correct. I woke up on a Thursday morning in January to a surprise breakfast delivery from Adam. Along with breakfast came a letter. As I began reading the letter, I realized that this was a little more than just the average morning date. Before I could even begin to question what was going on, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him. It was a pretty great way to start the day!
When did y’all get married? March 23, 2013
How many friends, family, and loved ones attended your wedding? 200
Describe your wedding flowers. The Sutherland’s natural beauty and rustic walled-garden inspired us to keep the ceremony simple, casual, and intimate. We selected baby’s breath, roses, and hydrangeas for floral arrangements, and kept to soft shades of ivory and blush for the décor.
Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We decided to choose a cupcake stand over a wedding cake for our dessert. The stand included a 6” spice cake on top and 18 dozen mini cupcakes in four different flavors: Simply Cinnamon, Wedding Cake, Lemon Zest, and Red Velvet. We liked the idea of giving our guests multiple flavor options while still being able to partake in the traditional couple cake cutting.
Did you have something borrowed, something blue, and something new? If so, do tell! While my mom was zipping up my gown, she showed me a piece of her wedding dress that she had sewn into mine as my something old. I love that she surprised me with that! My navy heels were my something blue. My grandmother’s wedding band was my something borrowed, and my sisters gave me a gorgeous engraved bracelet as my something new.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Figuring out how to seat 200 people in a ballroom that seats 175!
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-$50,000
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We still laugh so hard when we look back at the pictures from our photo booth! Also, Our venue gave us a complementary ice sculpture. Typically, couples choose to have their monogram carved into the ice, but instead, Adam and I decided to use it as an opportunity to proudly display our favorite college football team, the East Carolina Pirates!
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Our photographer was absolutely incredible! I love that it was a husband and wife duo that could tag team during the ceremony and reception in order to capture all of the day’s festivities. I also felt really blessed to walk away from my wedding experience with pictures that so clearly depicted the emotions felt that day. Robyn was so patient and willing to go the extra mile for us, and I am extremely grateful for that!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Have fun on your wedding day!! I can honestly say that my wedding day was the best day ever, and I think every bride should feel that way about her special day.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We want to travel! I’m most excited to continue “growing up” with Adam and to experience life with him–I’m lucky to have a husband who is also my best friend and spiritual leader.

Friends, it is with unbelievable delight that I introduce you to… the Southern Weddings V6 cover!!!

Oh my stars, indeed!! We are so, SO, so, SO, so, SO very proud of this beauty. Not only because she is quite obviously beautiful, but because of all of the stories between the pages that she represents. Ready for a little bit of her own backstory? Here we go!

Last spring we started working on an editorial shoot with our friends Ryan Ray and Stefanie Miles. (You may remember them from last year’s Yellow Rose editorial.) The shoot went off just as planned, and Ryan sent us the finished images a few months later. They were GORGEOUS, and we were so happy! I had mentioned to him before the shoot that we did not have a cover for V6 planned, and that we’d love for him to keep that in mind when cropping and posing portraits.

We didn’t immediately spot a cover, so we went busily about the business of finishing our shoot season. We selected a lovely image from one of our other editorials for the cover, and even sent it to the printer for proofing! From the beginning, though, we had been tweaking and adjusting to try and get the image to really shine, but when we saw the printer proofs, we just knew it wasn’t going to “sing.”

So, with just days (hours?) left before our final, final, FINAL version was due to be printed, we made the HUGE decision to scrap all of our cover plans (and launch party color scheme!) and choose an entirely new image — Ryan’s. Talk about a leap of faith — we never even saw a printed proof of the cover until the finished magazines arrived at our office!! I have to say, I was very resistant to the idea at first — as much as I love Ryan, I was looking forward to having a new talent grace our cover, and we were so far into the process at that point. But when we saw the new version mocked up, it was simply undeniable — this was our cover.

Perhaps the very BEST part? The couple on the cover is married in real life!! The bride is Christina Frederick, a wedding planner in Tulsa and Houston (one of our Blue Ribbon Vendors!) and one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. We actually had the chance to surprise her IN PERSON with the news that she was going to be our cover girl! She attended Lara’s Making Things Happen Conference in October, and was totally bowled over when we flashed the cover on the screen. Thankfully, we had a photographer there to capture the moment:

So many emotions in such a short span of time! THANK YOU to Robyn Van Dyke (also a Blue Ribbon Vendor!) for capturing them all!! Of course, Christina knew that we’d be publishing the shoot, but at that point she hadn’t seen ANY photos from the day, and she most certainly didn’t know that she was going to be on the cover! She and her husband Blair are such a perfect example of why we love weddings and marriage, and we are so proud and blessed to have them grace our pages.

Though our official release day is Tuesday, we’ve heard that copies have already popped up on newsstands around the South! Yeehaw!! Be sure to snap a pic of yourself with your copy and tag #SWV6 on instagram or Twitter! If you live outside the South, you can always find a copy in our store. (And speaking of our store — be sure to stop by on Monday, when we’ll be sharing a look at the famous SWPS!)

THANK YOU, RYAN AND STEFANIE!!!

In the meantime, we’re DYING to know: What do y’all think??? Did we make the right decision? Are you as much in love with V6’s cover as we are?

P.P.S. Check back on Tuesday to see more from this gorgeous editorial!

Friends! Welcome back to the Southern Weddings blog! We sincerely apologize for any downtime you might have experienced over the last few days, and thank you kindly for your support during these exciting changes. Speaking of exciting things, be sure to come back tomorrow, because we have an announcement you will NOT want to miss! Hint: It involves a certain magazine that is in the making :) Now, onto today’s wedding. I don’t know if Robyn Van Dyke just happens to work with super-emotive couples, or if she’s extra-talented at bringing out emotion in her couples (I think it’s probably a little of both!), but I love how her photographs so clearly translate the emotion of a wedding day. And of course, as someone who married her own high school sweetheart, I have a soft spot for Tori + Will’s story.

Will and I met our senior year of high school at our youth group senior beach trip. Ironically, we had grown up in the same church and had never really spoken to each other! We hit it off immediately and started dating a month later. We dated for over four years before we tied the knot. It is so neat to be able to say that I married my high school sweetheart! While visiting Will’s grandparents and touring graduate schools in Florida, Will convinced me to get up early and have a sunrise photo shoot on the beach. While we were being photographed by his grandmother, we read from the Bible and Will shared his heart with me in the form of a letter. The last line of the letter read, “I have one more question to ask you, but you have to stand up first.” He then got down on one knee and the rest is history! Fortunately, we have some really awesome photographs of the whole thing.

Did you decide to do a “first look”? Why or why not? We decided not to do a first look. In my opinion, there are only a few truly pure surprises in life and the moment when a groom first beholds his bride has always been one of those moments in my mind. I am so glad that we decided to be traditional and not do a first look. Seeing my groom at the end of the aisle was one of the most exciting and peaceful experiences of my life.

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had my brother read 1 John 4:7-19 out of my grandfather’s Bible. Since he is no longer with us, we felt like this was the most perfect and meaningful way to honor his memory. We chose the verse because we wanted our wedding to be centered around our love for the Lord and how His love for us has changed our lives and brought us into a covenant with Him and with one another. Our favorite detail of the wedding was: There were so many physical details that we loved about our wedding day, but our most favorite detail was the fact that our ceremony incorporated so many of our loved ones. Will’s brother, Chad, officiated the ceremony, and did such a wonderful job. My brother Josh read scripture and my sister-in-law Kelsey sang. All of our siblings were part of the wedding party and Will’s adorable nephews, Griffin and Caedmon, were our ring bearers. We were also so blessed to have our parents and members of the wedding party gather around us for a time of prayer during the ceremony. This was one of our favorite moments. Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Most of the ceremony was traditional. I chose to walk down the aisle to the Bridal March and the wedding party entered to the ever-so-elegant Canon in D. My sister-in-law sang “Be Thou My Vision” during the ceremony and it was absolutely beautiful. We chose this song because the lyrics mean so much to us and because we want them to be representative of our marriage and our lives.

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? Being from the South, all of these traditions were important to me because they honor the people from the past who have molded and shaped my family. There were too many options for me and in most cases, I doubled up! I borrowed something from both of my grandmothers. From my maternal grandmother, I borrowed her beautiful pearl cluster earrings and from my paternal grandmother, I borrowed her pearl bracelet. My something blue was my garter with blue ribbon. My something old was a cameo from my great grandmother that I carried on my bouquet and the penny that my mom wore in her shoe on her wedding day. For something new, my mom had a handkerchief embroidered with mine and Will’s names, in hopes that I could pass it down to our future children.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Well, first of all, we had an incredibly Southern venue! The beautiful, majestic Belmont Estate was a breathtaking backdrop to our ceremony and it captured the perfect Old South feel that we wanted. In my opinion, part of being Southern is honoring the past. We incorporated lots of antique milk glass in our centerpieces and old fashioned depression glass on our escort card table, some of which belonged to my great grandmother. And of course, you can’t forget the bow ties! Our Southern gentlemen wore their pink bow ties with such class.

We had a traditional wedding cake with sweet, Southern-style flavors. We had a layers of strawberry shortcake, pink lemonade, and tres leches. The cake had a ribbed texture and had a cascade of our wedding flowers. It was breathtaking and even more beautiful than I had ever imagined!

When did y’all get married? June 1, 2013
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? Around 150
Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I found my wedding dress at the very first bridal store my mom, my sister and I ever visited. The dress was on display and I stared at it for a little while before the consultant finally said “You want to try it on, don’t you?” The dress was not at all what I was picturing for myself at all, but once I had it on, I couldn’t imagine anything better or more beautiful for my big day.
Describe your wedding flowers. From the very beginning, I knew I had to have two flowers present at my wedding–peonies and ranunculus. Sure enough, these flowers made up my beautiful white bouquet and were woven into our centerpieces, bridesmaid bouquets, and boutonnieres. I could not have envisioned more beautiful flowers or floral details. Our florist, Just Priceless, completely captured the sweet, Southern elegance that we wanted.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? The most challenging part of the wedding planning process was being apart. Will was still in Boone finishing up college in the months leading up to the wedding and I was living at home student teaching. Though it was challenging, being apart only solidified our relationship and made the reunions all the more sweet.
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? We were blessed with some of the most phenomenal vendors! From the florist to the cake baker, each played a part in making our wedding day truly beautiful. We honestly do not have a single complaint about any of the vendors who shaped our day. However, we cannot express how much it means to have beautiful photographs from Robyn Van Dyke Photography. Having Robyn and Jordan with us on that day was wonderful, and now, we have the most stunning images to keep forever! They are phenomenal.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There are so many moments that stand out from that day: Will’s face as he looked up at me for the first time, our behind-the-door gift exchange, and the countless connections with loved ones. However, I will honestly say that my favorite and most memorable moment from my wedding day was driving away from the reception with Will. The joy that we shared as we were on our way to starting our lives together was intensely sweet and we both just basked in memories from the day.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Be sure to prepare for your marriage far more than you prepare for your wedding. Leading up to your big day, it is important that you spend time with one another in ways that don’t always revolve around wedding planning. Embrace the sacredness of this season of life and enjoy the excitement and anticipation
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Will and I look forward to pursuing our dream careers for awhile before we begin a family. I will be in my first year of teaching second grade and Will is beginning to explore graduate school options. Most of all, we just look forward to making a home together. We are already loving being able to come home to one another each day. It makes life so much sweeter to be able to do that!
