Melissa + Eric’s reception at Front Porch Farms in Nashville was a good ole Southern party full of classic details. I’m head over heels for their long farm tables dressed with monogrammed burlap runners, white flowers and silver details. And you guys know, everything is better with string lights! The shabby chic dessert bar was made with the help of Melissa’s sister, who baked and decorated their three-tiered cake, which looks mighty delicious! Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Southern fete without peach cobbler pie, which stood among the cupcakes and frosted treats. The real treat, in my opinion, were the fireworks and sky lanterns that entertained the guests throughout the night. Plus, it made for one of Phindy Studios beautiful photos, don’t you think?

Describe your wedding cake or dessert: My sister made our cake! Our cake flowers went missing, but we found some roses to put on top, and went on with the party. Besides, no one was looking at the cake very long. As soon as we’d given each other a bite, our fireworks show started!
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Wedding planning was the fun part – it was the juggling that plus work, school, moving twice, and a practicum that nearly killed me!
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $25,000-50,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Fireworks and Sky lanterns. We loved them, and both were a wonderful way to surprise and entertain our guests throughout the long night!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? As Eric attempted to start our antique getaway car, he accidentally flooded the engine, rendering it completely immobile. As our guests cheered us on, a group of Eric’s friends stepped up, beers in hand, and pushed us, in the car, out of sight.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Someone told us to take a minute or two every hour of the day, to stop and look at what’s going on. It helped us remember and enjoy the day so much as it flew by. Great advice!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Eric’s career is going strong; I’m finishing my Master’s degree in April. Right now we’re just looking forward to having some semblance of a routine one day!

Melissa + Eric were college sweethearts who met as teenagers at camp. After reuniting with Melissa in Nashville and proposing on campus under a gazebo, translating the Southern romance into Southern wedding style looks practically effortless. Ribbon details looked marvelous swaying in the wind and even better dressed up with calligraphy! Melissa’s sister wrote “Love in the Life – That is Paradise” on the ribbon wrapped around Melissa’s white rose bouquet. We love how easy it was to personalize, but how sweet it looks! From the flower girl’s banner to the vine-draped altar, Melissa’s + Eric’s ceremony sings sweet Southern love. We can’t thank Phindy Studios enough for sending this one our way!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. We met way back when I was 15, and Eric was 16. I traveled with a group from my home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, to volunteer at a camp in Indiana for adults with mental disabilities. Eric had been volunteering there for several years. When my family decided to move to Nashville a few months later, I was thrilled- 5 hours to Indy was a lot better than 13! We dated long distance for years, driving back and forth once a month until Eric was able to transfer to my university in Nashville. As we continued to spend time together, everything we’d come to love about the other person was confirmed tenfold.
Describe the proposal. Back during our freshman year apart, Eric and I took a walk around Belmont University’s campus. We sat in one of their beautiful gazebos, and he looked me in the eye and promised he’d find a way to make it to Nashville. Sure enough, four years later, he led me to sit in that same gazebo as he went down on one knee to ask me to be his wife!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Sweet, romantic, and uniquely ours!
In what month did you get married? September
How many guests attended your wedding? 120 – Almost entirely family!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The calligraphy my sister did for the ribbon wrapping our bouquets. The lyrics, “Love in the Life – That is Paradise” have a lot of meaning for Eric and me.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We went traditional and used Lutheran marriage vows, but wrote our own words for our ring exchange. I loved Eric’s line that stated “I commit to center my life in Christ in order to love you.” He says his favorite words from me were, “I commit myself to you with wholehearted love and joy.”
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I got quite lucky with my dress! I had my heart set on a designer that was very expensive. As I tried those dresses on, the sales girl slipped in a similar looking design from a different designer – and at a third of the price! I fell in love with it instantly, and with a few changes I made, like the sash, it was perfect.

Really, who wouldn’t want to be a guest at Lisa + Blake’s farm wedding? With antique farm equipment, hay bales, and cows dotting the reception, this is Southern at its finest. Family and friends played corn hole on boards hand painted by Blake’s mom and were then treated to a Southern feast of barbecue, potato salad, and coleslaw. A claw foot tub full of Coca-Colas stood by to wash down the meal. I’m so impressed with Lisa + Blake’s just-decorated-enough strawberry shortcake — it’s the perfect dessert for their country wedding and I’m dying for a piece. Big thanks again to Jamie Clayton for sharing!

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The homemade corn hole boards made by Blake’s mother.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We decorated the tables with burlap, lanterns, and African violets. Our meal was barbecue, potato salad, coleslaw, and, of course, sweet tea. We draped rope along the walls of the barn and hung pictures of Blake and I by clothes pins. The wedding was on a farm in the middle of the country in Lebanon, TN with donkeys in the back of the farm, and a huge cow field to the right. The ceremony was on the porch of a log cabin, with the guests sitting on old church pews. The reception was in a barn, with wagon wheel chandeliers, lots of old farm equipment, hay bales, and an old claw foot tub that was used as a beverage holder complete with glass bottles of Coca-Cola.
Describe your wedding cake: It was a three-tiered strawberry shortcake with cream cheese icing.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Finding a location was difficult because we wanted it to reflect us and our personalities, but when we finally went to the farm we knew it was perfect. Other than that, Blake and I and our family and friends spent the entire week before the wedding decorating and preparing. It was very much a DIY wedding and we were pretty exhausted by the wedding day.
What range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one thing you are most happy you splurged on? Our fabulous photographer!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? The reveal was really great, when Blake and I saw each other for the first time. We were both so emotional and happy. My mom and bridesmaids were peeking through a window, watching during the reveal. We could hear them crying and cheering from inside.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? We just bought a house in Knoxville and have been enjoying fixing it up and decorating it. Blake is in nursing school currently, and we look forward to doing travel nursing and traveling around, and hopefully out of, the country after he graduates.
