Hi y’all! After the wedding of my dreams and an amazing first two weeks of marriage, I’m excited to be back in the SW office–I’ve missed y’all! :) And I can’t imagine a lovelier way to get back into the swing of things than Lindsay and Walker’s Charleston wedding. As the setting for this new chapter of their love story, they chose two venues with incredible histories–the first Baptist church in the South, and Hibernian Hall, a historic venue that dates back to 1840. With the help of their talented vendors, they added simple and classic details that made their venues even more personal, but never distracted from what mattered most on that day–their love and joy of becoming husband and wife!

Thanks so much to Jennings King for sharing this special day with us!

Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! My something borrowed was earrings that I borrowed from my best friend, who had worn them in her wedding. My something blue was my grandmother’s sapphire and diamond ring that I have always loved. My something old was lace taken from my mother and mother-in-law’s wedding dresses, which was wrapped around my bouquet. My something new was my pearl bracelet my father surprised me with on my wedding day.

I was not expecting to find my dress when I did! I had just left an appointment at another dress shop and was headed to lunch. We were meeting a few people for lunch, but got there early. The restaurant was located next to another dress shop, so we peeked our heads in to look around while we waited. I looked through the dresses and didn’t find one that I wanted to try on, but as we were leaving, I saw a dress hanging by itself that just spoke to me! I tried it on for my mom and couldn’t stop smiling…I didn’t want to take it off! The one thing holding me back from getting it right then was the fact that my twin sister was not with me to give me the okay. I wanted her opinion and reassurance before making the big decision, so I took her back and tried it on for her the next week, and purchased it before I left the store.

We got married at First Baptist Church, which is one of our favorite churches. We love the history behind it (it was the earliest Baptist church in the South), as well as its simplicity.

Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Our vows were traditional, Christian vows that we decided on prior to the wedding. However, we did write handwritten letters that we exchanged before the wedding, that included with our personal vows to one another.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Even though we loved every second of our wedding day, we both agree that the most memorable moment, hands down, was the moment when the church doors opened and we saw each other for the first time that day. We were both overwhelmed with emotion and couldn’t stop smiling. We locked eyes and it was like we were the only two people in the entire church. It was truly the most amazing feeling.

What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? While we were extremely happy with all of our vendors, the two that we are extra happy we chose to be a part of our wedding were our photographer, Jennings King Photography, and our videographer, Artistic Eye Productions. They were both excellent to work with and did an amazing job. They were able to capture every single moment perfectly, as well as all of the details of our wedding.

We had three cakes! The middle cake had three tiers and the cakes on each side had two tiers. Each cake was a different flavor: dulce de leche, carrot cake, and coconut cream.

The reception was at Hibernian Hall, which was perfect for the reception we had always dreamed of. It had beautiful gold chandeliers, a stage for a live band, and a huge dance floor for all of our guest to dance the night away on. What else could you ask for?

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. I first noticed Walker when he came to the office where I was working at the time for an interview. I was the only single one in the office, so when he, a good lookin’ single guy, walked in, everyone immediately started scheming. Later that week, I was at Midtown Bar and Grill celebrating a friend’s birthday when I spotted Walker across the bar. My best friend, Morgan, talked me into going over and talking to him (even though Morgan did all the talking). This was our official meeting and as fate would have it, Walker began working at my place of employment two weeks later. We were hesitant to take things to the next level, and it wasn’t until December 18, 2010 at the company’s annual Christmas party that we hit it off. Thankfully, I was ending my time working there and starting dental hygiene school that January. The rest was history!
Tell us all about the proposal! Dewees Island, where my parents have a place, is where we have shared birthdays, holidays, weekend getaways, and lots of memorable family time. Over the years, Walker explored many areas of the island to find the best fishing spots. He came across a dock that extends into the waterway and has a view that could never get old, and it has become our favorite go-to spot. When Walker decided that I was the girl he wanted to call his wife, there wasn’t a doubt in his mind where he wanted to propose. It was an extremely windy Saturday in February, the day after Valentine’s Day, when he decided to pop the big question. I thought that some friends were coming to town, and we were going to take them to Dewees Island to go fishing (or rather, the boys were going to go fishing while the girls caught up). Matt and Allison ended up “not being able to come,” but Walker and I decided to go to the island anyway. My mother had arranged for a friend to take pictures and capture the moment, and family awaited us at the ferry dock to celebrate.

How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? The main way we planned for our marriage while planning our wedding was going to pre-marital counseling. This is something we both wanted to do before the wedding and we are glad we did it!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Stay calm and do not stress about the little things. This is such a special time in your life, so enjoy it! Also, have fun the day of your wedding. You will be a little anxious the day of, but don’t let that prevent you from being yourself, relaxing, and having fun with your bridesmaids. Figure out what means the most to you and make your budget around those things. For me, it was the photographer/videographer, entertainment, and food. We originally were not going to have a videographer, but changed our minds closer to the wedding and we are so glad we did! Having a video to watch allows you to relive the best day of your life over and over again. We have watched our video so many times!
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We are looking forward to so many things…we definitely hope to do some traveling during the next few years, and we plan to start a family down the road. We want to focus on growing our relationship together and enjoying the fruits of marriage.

What a wonderful love story! I think my favourite thing about this wedding is that everything seemed to be so easy, smooth and fun loving. I love that everything is white including the cake and flowers. It’s simple, it’s elegant, and it’s beautiful.

During our team retreat, we played a Southern Weddings version of The Newlywed Game. Kristin and I lost to Emily and Lisa by just one point! However, when the question of whether your partner would rather go to Mardi Gras or the Kentucky Derby came up, KNW knew me the best! I love Mardi Gras, but I’ve never been to the Derby, and we often daydream of a Derby double date with our beaus. Lindsey and Ryan’s Derby-inspired wedding only makes me want to go more! I love how they timed their cocktail hour with the race, included mint juleps as their signature drink, and aptly named their tables after past winners, inspired by the guests at the table (be sure to read about that below!). But, despite their love for every special detail, Lindsey and Ryan said “our favorite detail was becoming husband and wife.” That’s the best detail in my book as well!

Big SW hugs to our friend Elaine Palladino for sharing this fun day!

P.S. How fun is it that Lindsey and Ryan are celebrating their first anniversary at the actual Kentucky Derby this weekend? So special!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Mutual friends of ours, Dave and Rachel Gossett, hinted for eight years that we should meet. Living in different cities, we both presumed that it was never really meant to be. Fast forward to Derby Day 2012 when Dave and Rachel were at my annual Derby party and sent Ryan his first picture of me. A little later in the evening, one text was followed by a few clever other ones, that led to a conversation that never stopped. We texted through May into June, talked on the phone for the rest of the summer, and then Ryan came to visit over Labor Day weekend. We met on my front porch for our first date, and though I will admit to being profoundly nervous, we both knew instantly that there was something special between us. We spent the next year and a half dating and being engaged long-distance, while Ryan took care of his ailing father in Jacksonville before making the big move to Miami last spring, just in time for the wedding.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did. I am exceptionally traditional in most areas of my life, and was convinced I’d never do a first look, but when we decided to time the cocktail hour so that it was during the Kentucky Derby, we knew if we wanted to see it, we’d have to do pictures beforehand. It was a good thing we did, because as soon as I was dressed, all I could think about was getting to Ryan. If I had to wait until the ceremony, I might have gone crazy! It was just us for those few moments, and it was fantastic. Well, it was supposed to be just us, until I saw the pictures later of the entire wedding party watching from inside the hotel. :)

I saw my dress on Pinterest almost a year before getting engaged. I saved the picture thinking, “I would love to find a dress like this one day.” The night of my engagement, my sister, who was so excited to start planning wedding details, asked me if I knew the kind of dress I wanted. I shared the picture, just to give her an idea of what I was looking for, but realizing it would be hard to match something to that dress. Somehow, within a couple of days, she had found the dress, identified the designer, found the only store in Miami that sold that designer, and sent me there the following Saturday. I walked in, tried on the dress, and knew it was the one. I am forever grateful to her, more than I could ever express.

We chose orchestral hymns for the seating of the mothers and the processionals. Having both been raised in the Protestant faith, the hymns we chose felt like a natural way to invite the Lord into our day, while also honoring our moms at the same time. Our close friend beautifully sang The Lord’s Prayer at the end of the ceremony for the same reasons. Our first dance was to “Amen” by Dave Barnes. The words remind us that in all things, we are thankful to God and trust in His plans for our future. As a side note, the trumpeter at the wedding decided on his own accord that the bridal processional should start with a lively “Derby” fanfare. It was a surprise to all, and a great laugh.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? It was extremely important to us and our parents that we were married in a church. Our home church doesn’t offer ceremonies on Saturdays, so we chose a beautiful church near the Biltmore Hotel, where our reception was going to be. We wanted our day to be as enjoyable and easy as possible for all of our guests, so we kept everything as convenient as we could. The Biltmore was the perfect backdrop for the feel and style of our wedding.

We encouraged our guests to embrace the theme of the Derby by wearing big hats and bow ties–and boy, did they! We also included mint juleps, pennant mason jars, and a bluegrass band. To top the night off, we opened (and emptied) a long-saved bottle of 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle with all of our friends. To represent “South” Florida, we had a cigar roller at the reception.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We named our tables after horses who have won the Derby throughout history, and chose names that best represented the guests sitting at that table (for example, “Behave Yourself” was for the wedding party and “Spend A Buck” was for my parents’ table :)). We also set thank you notes on each table, which we hoped expressed to our family and friends just how much their love meant to us. Honestly though, despite our love for every special detail we included, our favorite detail was becoming husband and wife.

What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? Our first anniversary! We are going to the 2015 Kentucky Derby with our immediate family. None of us have ever been and we thought it would be a wonderful way to celebrate a year of marriage with our families!

Tell us all about the proposal! Each year, my family travels with the Gossetts and all of our extended family to Sanibel for the Fourth of July. Before the weekend, Ryan met with my dad to ask for my hand in marriage. On the night of the 4th, while on the beach, we joked about being married a year from that day. I gave Ryan a hard time, saying “First, we have to get engaged!” Just 20 minutes later, while watching fireworks, Ryan whispered into my ear, “Remind me again what step one is?” I turned around in disbelief and Ryan got down on one knee! It felt like we were the only two people on the beach in those few moments, and then, we turned around to find our families and friends there to greet us with hugs and champagne.

How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 275
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We exchanged traditional vows, but we tweaked one line. Instead of saying “to love, honor and cherish,” we added “care for” into the phrase. The way we take care of each other is often our greatest expression of love.
What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We had two readings at the ceremony: Romans 12:1-2, 9-13 and Colossians 3:12-17. Romans spoke to us about how to honor the Lord, each other, and others through our union and love. Colossians taught us how to love each other. Also, Romans 12:13 tells us to “practice hospitality.” This instruction highlights a gift we feel God has given us, as we both find joy in opening our home and hearts to others.
What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? My mom gets the glory for the DIY details. Among the countless, non-crafty details she managed, she still found time to spray paint horseshoes, assemble pennants, and sew napkin rings for nearly 300 people. As a team, we stuffed invitations, assembled programs, hand-wrote the name cards and pennant mason jars, and painted flower boxes and “happily ever after” signs.
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? Make it your own; tell your story. But most importantly, stay calm and remember that everything will turn out okay. It will be more perfect than you can possibly imagine, because at the end of it all, you will be married.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding? In lieu of wedding favors, we made a gift to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, in honor of Ryan’s father, Douglas Franklin Parker, who passed away in April 2013. Each guest received a note from the foundation and a chocolate horseshoe from Dr. Parker’s favorite chocolatier, Peterbrooke.

Anna and Nathan’s outdoor ceremony looks like a breath of fresh air to me. The beautiful open field and prodigious tree at Blue Ribbon Vendor venue, Vinewood Plantation, provided the perfect Southern backdrop that they were looking for! Anna and Nathan’s goal throughout their wedding planning was to create a comfortable celebration, full of natural beauty and good food. You can’t beat that, and I venture to say that, judging by their joy that is beaming right through each of these photos, they’d agree!

Thank you kindly to Blue Ribbon Vendor, Chris Isham for sharing this lovely day with us!

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did. Nathan and I cherished that moment and wanted it to be an intimate time. We both knew that it wouldn’t take away from the moment when I walked down the aisle, because I would be walking down the aisle to marry him, and it’s impossible to cheapen that. We loved having such a special moment between the two of us before all of the craziness began. It allowed us both to relax and take a deep breath when it was time for the ceremony.

Tell us about finding your wedding dress. I had absolutely no idea what style I wanted, so I had to try on everything! After two dress shops, I was nearing the end of my pile when I tried on “the one” and instantly knew this was how I was supposed to feel. I didn’t want to take it off because it was so perfect! It was a classic dress with such a fun twist.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? For starters, it happened under a big tree in a huge field–does it get more Southern than that? Ultimately, we wanted our wedding to be comfortable, and to us, nothing seems more Southern than comfort, beauty, and good food.

What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Nothing compares to the moment that I walked down the aisle. It was as if everything slowed down for me. I thought about my sweet father walking next to me, just as he had for all of the years leading to that moment. I saw our bridesmaids and groomsmen, who had helped us arrive at this day. I was able to appreciate the fact that never again would we have so many people we loved in one place. Finally, I saw my groom at the end of the aisle waiting for me. That moment was the moment I had longed for and envisioned for over two years. I will never forget it.

Describe your wedding cake or dessert. We loved the uniqueness of our “naked” cake. It tasted great, it looked beautiful, and it was a little untraditional. It was one of the most fun details of the wedding.

How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? Aside from premarital counseling and reading some recommended books, we sought advice from friends, family, and mentors who all have marriages that we admire. Needless to say, there was also a lot of prayer involved.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met through some mutual friends! By July, we were best friends, and November brought our first date. After that, we realized we were done searching for our future spouses. Two years later, he proposed.
Tell us all about the proposal! My sister invited us to cut down a Christmas tree at a farm just north of where we live. She said we would need to drive separately to the farm, due to lack of space. When we got there, she hadn’t arrived yet, so Nathan and I went exploring. He took us off the path and we started wandering through these huge trees. I faintly heard string music as we neared the destination he was leading us to, and as we rounded a corner, I noticed a sign that said “Page, Party of Two.” Honestly, I don’t remember half of what he said after that because I was in shock, but I definitely caught the most important part: “Will you marry me?” When I realized that we really weren’t cutting down a Christmas tree, he took me to my sister’s house, where all of our friends and family were waiting to celebrate with us.
When did y’all get married? October 24, 2014.
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 150
Did you have something borrowed, blue, old, and new? If so, do tell! Something borrowed was a cathedral veil, which was lent to me by a sweet friend. My something blue was the bottom of my shoes. My something old was a brooch pinned to the front of my bouquet, that had been passed down by my sister. My something new was my dress.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $10,000-$25,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Chris Isham. Not only was his work phenomenal, but he also become more of a friend than a vendor through the wedding process.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you most looking forward to about married life? We want to learn how to love each other well and make our marriage as strong as it can be. For now, we are taking it one day at a time. The details will continue to fall into place as we go.
