I imagine many Southern belles can relate to Rachel and Brett’s story–they met at an SEC school, and years later, couldn’t imagine tying the knot anywhere but their beloved alma mater! Just like that, these two decided to host a destination wedding at their old stomping grounds of Mizzou, complete with football field portraits, a visit from Truman the Tiger, and a performance by the marching band. As well as showcasing their college pride, Rachel and Brett were also sure to tie in plenty of other nods to their sweet relationship, from playing their favorite song for their walk up the aisle as husband and wife, to the bacon bar Rachel surprised Brett with. Yum!

Thanks so much to Scott Patrick Myers for sharing this fun day with us!

I had so much fun trying on dresses that I was a little sad once I had found “the dress!” I knew that it was 100 percent the dress for me when months later, my mom and I were at the dress store for a fitting and I pulled a dress from a rack and said, “Oh Mom, if I hadn’t already found a dress, this would be the one.” I took a closer look, and turns out, it was my dress! I did make a few alterations to the dress to make it truly mine. I added pearl buttons all the way down the train and had Swarovski crystals sewed into some of the lace flowers on the back. I also wore a fuller slip to give the skirt more volume and added a bow to the front. The bow was by far my favorite part of the dress!

Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. Although we kept our ceremony very traditional, we walked back up the aisle after being introduced as husband and wife to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” This is one of our favorite songs, and we couldn’t think of a better song to celebrate becoming husband and wife.

We chose to get married at our alma mater, the University of Missouri, because not only was it the place where we met, it also holds so many special memories for both of us. Because this was a destination wedding for most of our family and friends, we loved planning a weekend of events that showed off the spirit of Mizzou. Although we were planning a destination wedding, it was important to us to still have someone with a personal connection marry us. Brett’s fraternity chaplain is now a priest in a city close to Columbia, and he agreed to officiate the wedding.

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Although we live in Chicago, Missouri is technically a Southern state and we did want to incorporate a few Southern touches. We both love BBQ and Brett does a great job of finding BBQ restaurants for us to try whenever we are traveling. As favors for our guests, we gave out jars of BBQ rub from the restaurant Brett worked at growing up. As an SEC school, football is a big part of Mizzou, so once we decided to get married on campus, Brett knew he wanted to take photos on the football field. I also had the robes I gave my wedding party monogrammed.

Our favorite detail of the wedding was: We wanted to plan a few surprises for our guests throughout the day, one of which was having the mascot, Truman the Tiger, and Marching Mizzou show up and play at our cocktail hour. When they played the fight song and alma mater, it was so much fun to see our Mizzou friends alongside our other guests, all singing along together.

We had a small cutting cake and a dessert bar with all our favorites desserts, including doughnuts, chocolate-covered strawberries, rice krispie treats, and gooey butter cake, a St. Louis specialty. We also had chocolate chip cookies delivered to our guests’ hotel rooms the night of the wedding with cards that said “Sweet dreams from the bride and groom.” I wanted to plan something special for Brett on our wedding day, and anyone who knows him knows how much he loves bacon. I worked with our caterers to surprise him with a bacon bar that opened up after dinner. We had three different kinds of bacon along with dipping sauces, plus bacon-flavored popcorn. Our guests loved it!

Did you pull any wedding inspiration from memories you have together? Tell us about it! Absolutely! This was very important to us because we wanted our wedding to represent who we are as a couple. Our welcome bags included treats from Chicago and St. Louis, as well as homemade coconut macaroons, one of our favorite desserts, which we made together the week before the wedding. The doughnuts on the dessert bar were inspired by the doughnuts from our favorite bakery, Firecakes, in Chicago–we often end up there after date nights. The marching band represented all of the fun at football games we’ve had over the years. In our welcome bags, in addition to including treats from our hometowns, we also included a handwritten note to each guest. We were so excited to have our guests be a part of the day, and we wanted them to know how much we appreciated them making the trip.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. Brett and I met in college at the University of Missouri in fall 2006. We were introduced through mutual friends and our paths continue to cross over the next few years. When Brett accepted a job in Chicago in 2012, he got in touch. We spent that fall getting to know each other again, and by the end of the year, we knew we were meant to be together.
Tell us all about the proposal! Brett and I had planned a trip to Jamaica for his 30th birthday in February 2014. Our trip started off a little rocky when we found out the night before we were to leave that the hotel had overbooked and moved us to a different resort in a different city. I was so upset that our trip wasn’t going according to plan, but Brett was as calm as could be. I couldn’t understand why he wasn’t more upset! When we got to our hotel and settled in, Brett told me he had planned to have a photographer take some photos for me to use on my blog. Once we got down to the beach, he gave the photographer a nod, got down on one knee, and proposed. He told me he’d been so calm despite our travel mishaps because he knew that at the end of the day, he would be asking me to spend the rest of our lives together. It was so special to have a few days together to celebrate our engagement before we went home to share the news with our family and friends.
When did y’all get married? May 2, 2015
How many friends, family members, and loved ones attended your wedding? 125
Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did not do a first look. It was important to both of us that we saw each other for the first time when the church doors opened before my walk down the aisle. Our hotel rooms were on the same floor the morning of the wedding, and I was so worried we would accidentally bump into each other! Thankfully, our photographers and wedding party did a great job of keeping track of both of us.
Describe your wedding flowers. We kept our flowers very simple. I knew I didn’t want anything too elaborate, so we ordered hundreds of white roses in bulk and then had a friend who does floral design arrange them. This saved us a ton of money without sacrificing on quality. Since we were married on Derby Day, we used mint julep cups as vases on the food and drink tables.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Planning a wedding in a city you don’t live in is always a challenge, but we did our best to make the most of our limited time each time we visited Columbia. I can’t imagine having our wedding any place other than Mizzou though, so it was all worth it!
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? From Brett: Watching my niece walk down the aisle carrying a sign that said “Uncle Brett Here Comes Your Bride,” and then seeing the doors open to Rachel. From Rachel: A piece of advice my mom gave us before the wedding was to make sure we took some time to ourselves after the ceremony. We went up to the choir loft for a few private moments and we were able to look down at all our closest friends and family who had just witnessed us becoming husband and wife. I’ll always remember how happy I felt in that moment.
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We are hoping to buy a home within the next year so that we can start making memories in a place we can call our own. We also plan to keep traveling and exploring new cities and countries together.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your wedding? When we decided on a campus wedding, the stage where we held the cocktail hour had not been built. We got to be the first wedding to be held on Traditions Plaza, and we have a brick on the plaza with our names and wedding date engraved on it. Brett’s parents also met at Mizzou, so they have a brick right next to ours with their wedding date. I can’t wait to one day bring our children to campus and show the bricks to them!

I feel a special connection to today’s beautiful couple, Nina and Nick–their story started in Singapore, where I spent part of my childhood too! If there’s one thing I learned growing up abroad, it’s that the world is so small–you never know when you might cross paths with someone again. That was exactly the case for Nina and Nick, who reconnected in college at SMU, and started falling in love before the school year even started. Four years later, they began planning their Texas vineyard wedding with the help of Elixir Events, being careful to only include details that really meant something to them. As a result, the whole day was focused on their love and the joining of their families. What a perfect way to begin married life!

Thanks so much to Tracy Enoch for sharing Nina and Nick’s wedding with us!

The weekend after Nick proposed, my mom was in town, so we decided to take advantage of this trip and go wedding dress shopping. With no intention of finding my perfect dress yet, we set off to just have some fun. Browsing the racks of the Blushing Bride Boutique, we picked up a handful of dresses for me to try. After many vetoes, my eyes turned to what the boutique called the “vine dress.” Although it was beautiful, it was not the silhouette I had imagined myself in. I slipped into the dress, not overly enthused, and turned to stare at myself in the mirror…and this was the one, I knew it! Instead of breaking down and bawling, I was surprisingly calm, thoughtful, and logical. My mom couldn’t believe it! I knew it was the right dress because I made my decision in the calm, logical way that Nick would have. That is when the tears started rolling, because it wasn’t until then that I realized how much this man had impacted me for the better.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We decided not to do a first look. It was very important to both of us that we saw each other for the first time when I was walking down the aisle. We wanted to feel that magic!

What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? We think that having our wedding outdoors added a Southern element. We also had both a bride’s and groom’s cake. All of the bridesmaids wore a simple gold necklace with a pearl that I gave each of them, and Nick’s aunt hosted a bridal luncheon for me and the ladies closest to me.

Everyone says it’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day–well, we got extra lucky! The morning of our wedding day, the rain came down hard and we ended up having to move our ceremony to a different area of the vineyard. At the time, it was hard for me to gain perspective after we had been planning for so long, but in the end, it could not have worked out more perfectly. It ended up being more than we could have hoped for–we say it was meant to be!

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Mitas Hill made such a good first impression on us that we both immediately felt it was meant to be. It is such a rarity to find a vineyard in North Texas, and it was perfect for our outdoor wedding.

What was one way you saved money or cut costs at your wedding? We saved money by keeping things simple. We thought about what was really important to us, and then let everything else fall away. We wanted our wedding to be all about the joining of our two families and celebrating our love, and that is exactly what it was!

We really struggled to find a song that would be appropriate for our first dance. Finally, a week before the wedding, my angel of a sister shared the song “Forever Like That” by Ben Rector. It couldn’t have been more perfect–the words spoke to us, and it has become so special to us.

We went with a simple and elegant design for the bride’s cake, and incorporated beautiful vines to accent the vineyard around us. The groom’s cake, on the other hand, was inspired by one of our favorite TV shows, Game of Thrones. It was amazing!

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. From Nick: Our paths first crossed in Singapore. We had been living internationally for most of our lives due to our parents’ careers, and it just so happened that we both ended up at the Singapore American School at the same time. Most people would assume our relationship started there, but we were both too afraid to make a move. Circumstances brought us together again, however, with each of us deciding to attend Southern Methodist University one year apart. We officially met at SMU, and I, in an act of uncharacteristic social prowess, managed to score a date with Nina before the school year had even begun. This headstart proved unnecessary, as our relationship quickly blossomed into a whirlwind romance. From Greek formals and SMU Boulevards, to music festivals and road trips, we quickly grew to be more than just great friends, and realized we shared a lot more than a common history of growing up overseas. Four years later would be the real test of our relationship upon my moving after graduation. However, distance, as they say, makes the heart grow fonder, and in this case, showed us what was truly important: each other.
Tell us all about the proposal! For almost a year after his graduation, Nick and I maintained a long distance relationship, with him living in Houston for his job while I finished my degree at SMU. Nick was visiting for one of his long weekend trips, and that Saturday morning, while I thought he was hanging out with his best friend and nursing a hangover, he was actually putting in motion the plan to ask me to spend the rest of our lives together. Towards the end of the day, he told me to make my way back to the Tri Delta sorority house for a belated surprise, as my birthday had been earlier that week. Waiting for me was one of my dear friends, who helped me get ready before I was whisked away to the first of many destinations. I first stopped in front of the Sig Ep house (Nick’s fraternity), where we had first made eyes at each other four years before. There, I was handed a letter written by Nick, which, among the heartfelt and romantic thoughts, gave me my first clue as to where to start the scavenger hunt down memory lane. After following the clues to places that hold special memories for us, I finally found Nick waiting for me at White Rock Lake, where he had planned a sunset picnic for Valentine’s Day just months before. I couldn’t breathe as I drove up in my little red Jeep. There he was, the man of my dreams, standing in the middle of the small bridge overlooking the lake. I finally caught my breath and made my way to his side. Taking my hands, Nick reminded me of memories from our four years together. After a deep breath, he got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of our lives together! It was the best day of my life!

What readings, if any, did you have at your ceremony? We chose 1 Corinthians 13:4 because both of our parents had used this reading at their weddings.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? There were so many amazing moments from our wedding. For us, the most memorable were the quiet moments we were able to share together amongst the craziness. When we were able to take even just a few seconds to look into each other’s eyes and acknowledge exactly what was happening around us and how much we loved each other, that was the best!
What advice do you have for folks currently planning a wedding? We didn’t have the luxury of being together during our engagement–we were over 3,000 miles apart. Don’t take one second together for granted. Enjoy every little detail and moment you have, because you only get to do this once. Don’t let the little things stress you out. Remember what the day is really about and the person you will get to spend the rest of your life with!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? Next for us is saying goodbye to the USA and hello to St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Nick has already been living there for about a year, and now, it’s my turn to pick up and move to be with my guy. Having both lived overseas, we know our adventures are just beginning, and we can’t wait!

As you may know, Kristin and I are virtual BFFs. While we don’t live in the same city, we maintain quite a close bond (we even have our own hashtag!), and I’m pretty sure Kristi would fit right in with us. While we love being modern ladies, all three of us are undeniably traditional Southern brides! After choosing her gorgeous gown, Kristi knew she wanted to throw what she had originally pictured for her wedding out the window, and instead, plan a sweet Southern soirée that reflected her Georgia roots and showed Peter’s family the classic and elegant side of the deep South. Of course, The Georgian Terrace fit the bill perfectly–the final manuscript of Gone with the Wind was finished in the hotel, after all!

Gracious, we’re glad Amy Arrington was hand to capture this lovely day!

I originally pictured myself in something very modern and form-fitting. Although my dress was not the style that I originally thought I would choose, the instant I put the dress on, it took me back to being a little girl. All of a sudden, I realized I couldn’t fight being that traditional Southern bride–it’s who I am! Every detail I originally pictured for my wedding went out the window, all because of the dress. My dress was elegant and made a statement, but was not over the top. I fell in love with the beaded details, the scalloped lace at the bottom, and the sweetheart neckline. It was the third dress I tried on and I knew it was the one.

What made you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they have any special significance to you? Peter’s family is from Philadelphia, and many hadn’t been to Georgia before, so I wanted a wedding that would be the definition of a Southern belle’s wedding. Most people think barns and mason jars when they hear “Southern,” but I wanted to show the classic, historical, elegant side of the South, and The Georgian Terrace was just that. It’s a stunning building with amazing history–all of the stars and the director of Gone With the Wind stayed at the Georgian Terrace, and the final manuscript was finished in the hotel. I also have family history at the Georgia Terrace Ballroom. When my grandmother was in her twenties, she competed in twist dancing competitions in the ballroom where our reception was held. Once I decided that the Georgian Terrace was our venue, my mom was over the moon. For months, all she had been talking about was how I had to see Peachtree Christian Church. She went there as a little girl and it is only one mile from the Georgian. The church took my breath away–it is on the National Registry of Historic Places and houses the United States’ largest collection of British stained glass.

Did you decide to do a first look? Why or why not? We did not do a first look. Out of all the wedding festivities, we were most looking forward to the first time we would see each other. I wanted him to see me for the first time walking down the aisle as his bride. It’s a magical moment and we wanted to experience all of those emotions in front of our loved ones.
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? Peter and I wrote our own vows, but did not read them at the ceremony. We exchanged them in private.
Tell us about some of the songs you used throughout your wedding and why you chose them. For the ceremony, we chose traditional and classic music. “The Lord’s Prayer” was played while our family was being seated. Peter’s family is Catholic, so we had “Ave Maria” sung while they were seated. “Canon in D” played as the bridesmaids entered. “Bridal Chorus” was played during the bridal processional and “Wedding March” was played as Pete and I left.

I think everything about our wedding was Southern! Some of the Southern details and traditions of our wedding weekend were our historical venues and the trolley transportation for our guests and wedding party. My grandfather said the blessing before dinner, which was so special to Peter and I. I gave my bridesmaids pearl jewelry and monogrammed pjs! Our cuisine was also quite Southern, as we incorporated fried green tomatoes and other Southern hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour.

Describe your wedding flowers. I really wanted peonies, but they were out of season. My florist did a wonderful job of finding similar flowers with the same feel. My all-white bouquet consisted of a variety of roses, ranunculus, lisianthus, astilbe, astrantia, and more. The table arrangements and bridesmaids’ bouquets were elegant and romantic, filled with soft pinks and whites with touches of flowering greenery and magnolia leaves. I loved using greenery in the arrangements to add an almost garden-like feel. We used a combination of the mercury glass vases and tall silver candlesticks for decoration.

Our first dance was to John Legend’s “All of Me.” Peter picked this song out, and we felt it described our relationship perfectly. My father and I danced to Celine Dion’s “Because you Loved Me.” The man who raised me, my dad, is technically my stepdad. He has loved me, guided me, and raised me since the age of four and has done a better job than any dad I could have ever asked for. I chose this song because he has impacted my life in countless ways by loving me and my mom unconditionally.

How did y’all meet? Tell us your love story. We met at a college football game in September 2010 when my alma mater, the University of Alabama, hosted a game against Pete’s alma mater, Pennsylvania State University. We were both visiting Tuscaloosa for annual trips with friends. The two schools only play each other every twenty years, so it was fate that we met! We crossed paths on the Friday night before the game when Pete’s brave friend (and future best man) dared him to strike up a conversation with the six Southern blondes at Gallettes, the hangout where I spent many of my college days. Pete and I were inseparable for the rest of the weekend, before we said our goodbyes and traveled to opposite sides of the East Coast. A month later, we took a secret getaway to New York City and realized that we were meant to be! After a year of long-distance dating, we moved to Santa Monica, California together and lived there for four years. After our September 2013 engagement, Pete was offered a new job in Philadelphia. We moved to the Society Hill neighborhood of Philly in summer 2014, and frequently flew back to the Peach State to plan our Atlanta wedding.
Tell us all about the proposal! Pete surprised me with a weekend trip to the quaint Catalina Island off of the California coast. The island is tiny–only 22 miles long and eight miles across! We spent the day exploring the island, and while we were getting ready for dinner, I noticed a small box in Pete’s suitcase. “What’s this?” I asked. The proposal was supposed to be on the rooftop overlooking the ocean at sunset, but my finding the ring box sent Pete into a panicked frenzy. After attempting to “hide” the box under the bed, Pete realized there was no turning back. He grabbed my hand and nearly dragged me up to the roof deck. Pete was so shaken up that he forgot to get on one knee. We both cried, hugged, and I asked, “You did ask my dad for permission, right?” Once I heard that the answer was yes, I said “Of course!” The proposal happened about an hour earlier than planned, but it was a perfect and very “us” proposal! We had to push back our dinner reservation three times because we spent the next two hours calling loved ones, drinking champagne, and celebrating. It was an evening I will never forget!

How did you plan for your marriage while planning your wedding? Peter and I did pre-martial counseling through Peachtree Christian Church. Part of this process was to take a very detailed and extensive questionnaires about ourselves and our relationship. It was very interesting, and we learned a lot about each other and ourselves together. The church counselor helped us point out the strongest qualities in our relationship and noted areas where Peter and I are opposite. He gave us tips and encouragement on how to strengthen those areas.
If you are comfortable responding, what range did your wedding budget fall into? $50,000-$75,000
What is the one detail or vendor that you were so happy to have as a part of your wedding? Everything was wonderful, but I will say that I was most happy with our videographer. Hiring a videographer was a last-minute decision, but the best decision we made. You are so filled with emotion on your wedding day that you miss so many of the details. I still cry when I watch it, and it is something I will cherish forever!
What’s next for you as a couple? What memories are you looking forward to making together? We are just enjoying married life. We just added a mini golden doodle, Bella, to our family. We are looking forward to traveling together to Costa Rica in a couple weeks and to Africa next summer. We look forward to many more happy years together as Mr. and Mrs. Roman!
