Okay, if this isn’t a true-blue Southern wedding, I don’t know what is! Hannah + Chas were married in an intimate ceremony at their family property, Broadacres Farm. For her wedding day, Hannah donned a custom Myline replica of the iconic open-back Monique Lhullier “Scarlett” (we think she looks positively statuesque!), and even had her groom’s grandmother’s sixty-year old wedding buttons sewn onto her dress. The bride’s classic Aldo riding boots and her maids’ vintage-inspired frocks (all of their own choosing) lent a sweet, ladylike feel to this North Carolina wedding. To say Emily + I are in love with H + C’s wedding, photographed by the talented Alea Moore, would be an understatement.

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Chas and I met as students in Raleigh, NC. He was the classic boy from NCSU, and I was the girl from the all women’s college down the road, Meredith College. We locked eyes on the dance floor of shag night at Red’s. He didn’t know how to dance, but asked me to teach him. I wasn’t deterred by his novice moves. Instead I saw a tall, dark, and handsome man willing to give it a try! I was a hard catch though, and quickly pointed out that he was just a freshman and I was a first year graduate student. Our romance quickly developed over creative dates like quilt making, art gallery hopping, and collecting gifts for a child we sponsored for Christmas. Chas was not the average freshman and confidently pursued me.
Describe the proposal. I am a tricky girl to surprise, but Chas pulled off a sweet proposal at Dawson’s Creek in Pamlico County, NC. I grew up spending summers with my grandparents on the water and Chas honed in on this magical spot. He caught me off guard Easter weekend of 2010. I was told he would spend the holiday with friends in Greensboro. After a day at the beach with family, I drove to my Grandmother’s house where I unexpectedly found Chas with a nervous smile on his face. He dropped to one knee on the sandy bank of Dawson’s Creek in time for a sunset proposal, and I never saw it coming.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: unique, outside-the-box, comfortable
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The music. Folk Psalm played fantastic bluegrass music for us, and even called a square dance! We were also thrilled to have a cellist play during the ceremony, a long time favorite instrument of mine. We were also in love with the “Big Fish”-esqe lighting draped across the field.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? Potluck!! Not traditional for weddings these days, but standard fair for other celebrations. We decided to give it a try, and it was THE best wedding food we, and most of our guests, had ever enjoyed. The bluegrass band, hay bale seating, and use of our old barn and wraparound porch made for a particularly Southern wedding. We had no wedding planner and no big budget. We allowed our family and friends, many of which are talented artists, to provide personal touches.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: I had visited nearly every wedding shop between Winston and Raleigh without finding anything I liked. I considered ordering something online or having a custom designer fashion something, but time was running out. Six weeks before the wedding, my mother mentioned one last shop we had not yet visited. The tiny building housed hundreds of beautiful new dresses and Myeline, the owner and master seamstress, helped me find exactly what I wanted. For a very reasonable price, she altered the dress down 4 sizes and it was ready in plenty of time.

After their seaside ceremony, Liz + Klas took the celebration inside for an evening of dinner + dancing in the Kiawah Resort’s Atlantic Room. We like the warm, intimate feel of the reception hall almost as much as the couple’s elegant three-tier cake from Elaine’s Events. Fun fact: the bride’s silk organza gown was a custom masterpiece from Modern Trousseau. Talk about one-of-a-kind! The SW girls could relive E + K’s October celebration a bit longer, but suppose we’ll have to settle for thanking South Carolina photographer Heather Forsythe for helping us kick off the day!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress: It was custom-made by Modern Trousseau, with embroidered silk organza. My favorite detail was the single loop bow in the back; I carried that theme through a few details in the wedding: the cake, the ties on the booklets and the schnapps glasses, the flowers on the ceremony chairs were tied on with a single loop bow in tiffany blue, etc.
Describe your wedding flowers: The The Atlantic Room of the Ocean Course’s wrought iron chandeliers and brass sconces did not fit in with the overall look and feel of our wedding. OOH! did a fabulous job transforming those components of the room in to floral art, creating an ethereal ambience in the dining room for our sit-down dinner. The boutonnierres were made by the my mother and incorporated the beach theme. The groom wore a single starfish, and the groomsmen each wore a single sand dollar. The fathers each wore boutonnieres handcrafted using a combination of smaller seashells, and the “stem” of the boutonniere was covered in Tiffany blue ribbon.
Describe your wedding cake: Clean, elegant and simple. A single loop bow of icing adorned our simple ivory wedding cake along with our married monogram, EPK. The filling was designed to mimic our favorite dessert, Strawberry shortcake.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? We were faced with what could have been a significant hurdle the day of the wedding: a string of major thunderstorms were forecasted to make their way across Kiawah that afternoon. One major storm came and blew through quickly; however, the golf course radar told us that another major storm was on its way. We were informed that we had about a 30 minute window before the second storm arrived, so if we wanted to have the ceremony outdoors, we needed to do it ASAP! This meant moving the start time up approximately 15 minutes early, so we jumped on it. Cocktail hour was moved inside but lucky for us, the second thunderstorm never came. We were able to take our post-ceremony photos outside and, not only did we avoid another storm, we got a rainbow! It really felt like luck was shining down on us! The weather was still good after dinner, so we were able to proceed with the band and dancing on the side porch and lawn.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? What I remember most is seeing Klas for the first time when I walked down the aisle, and holding his arm so very tightly throughout the ceremony. After that, I remember truly cherishing every moment we had surrounded by so many people we love from so many different parts of our lives before and after we met. We’ll never have that experience again, and I’ll always treasure that!

Happy Thursday, y’all! It’s starting to get chilly here in North Carolina, but Elizabeth + Klas’ sunny beach wedding almost makes us forget that it’s no longer summer. We love South Carolina weddings, and can’t think of too many venues more perfect for an oceanfront ceremony that the famed Kiawah Resort. Heather Forsythe documented the happy couple’s big day, and OOH! Events planned + styled the nuptials to Southern perfection. I’m a total sucker for the bride’s traditional v-neck gown and cathedral-length veil (both from Modern Trousseau), and like that she opted for a clean, sophisticated chocolate brown for her maids. To complement the brown and aqua color palette, OOH! Events opted for all-white blooms and plenty of greenery. Boy, do I miss summer!

How did the two of you meet? Tell us your story. Klas and I met at a social function in uptown Charlotte sponsored by the Young Affiliates of the Mint (the Mint Museum in Charlotte). I will never forget driving home from work on that Friday evening in September of 2007. I was on the phone with my mom, lamenting the fact that I was supposed to meet some girlfriends at this Young Affiliates event that night but all I really wanted to do was go home, put on my PJs, and spend the evening on the couch! Her advice was invaluable, “Oh, just go!” So I went. Klas is actually very shy. I noticed him early on in the evening from a distance, but to be perfectly honest, since he was so handsome, I just assumed he was either taken or not very nice, so I dismissed it. However, later that evening, I was walking to say goodbye to a friend. As I was walking to chat with her before she left, I happened to be passing by Klas and one of his friends. As I passed, his friend Carlos grabbed my arm and said, “Hey, my friend would like to meet you!” Klas and I chatted briefly, got on the subject of tennis, joked that he should give me a lesson sometime (he is a phenomenal player), and then he asked me for my number. I did not think I would hear from him. Fast forward to the very next day and, lo and behold, I heard from him! It was a text, but I responded anyway. He then called, and we set up our first date…on the tennis courts!
Describe the proposal. Klas proposed at The Sanctuary on Kiawah Island. We realized that we were going to be late for our 8:30 dinner reservation so Klas made a call downstairs to let them know we might be late, and he suggested that we enjoy a drink on the balcony before we headed downstairs for dinner. We were out on the balcony with candlelight and a bottle of Dom Perignon. As we toasted, we got up to give each other a hug. Suddenly, Klas was on one knee, opening a little box, and asking if I wanted to marry him. I did, and I do! And here we are.
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Intimate, Swedish and American
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: It was really important to both of us that our wedding weekend reflect who we were as a couple and the things we value. Part of that was to honor our heritages – his Swedish and mine American – and bring the two together just as we were coming together as a couple. We wove this theme throughout the weekend, incorporating Swedish and American traditions in to all of our events. We ended up inviting more guests than our goal but we were surrounded by those closest to us, and that’s what mattered.
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration? What was Southern about your wedding? Our Oysters, BBQ and beach music rehearsal dinner started the weekend off in southern style! And I really tried to bring in the feel of the beautiful Southern island town of Kiawah, one of our favorite places! Kiawah was where 1) Klas first told me he loved me, 2) it’s where he proposed, and it just felt natural that Kiawah should also be the place we said, 3) “I do!” In fact, our tagline on the website was “I love you…Yes…I do!” symbolizing the three steps in our relationship. Our appetizers incorporated several of our Southern favorites: fried green tomatoes, grilled shrimp cocktail, lollipop lamb chops, and mushroom pastries.
