I swoon for glitzy affairs, but Nicki + Mike’s sweet wedding at the Eden Gardens reminds me what Southern weddings are all about – starting with the gents’ robin’s egg blue seersucker suits.  Add a real life Spanish moss-draped oak and hand-selected navy bridesmaid frocks, and you’ve got a good old-fashioned Dixie celebration.  (I’ll also be happy to borrow that pint-sized ring bearer for my own wedding if no one minds…)  Pure 7 Studios photographed the Florida wedding, and Shelby Peaden Events handled planning and design.  Come back soon for the reception pics, ya hear?

How did the two of you meet? Mike and I met at a party thrown by mutual friends.  Immediately, he grabbed my interest.  I have never met anyone quite like Mike.  He has an insatiable appetite for life…I was intrigued.  It was a slow start because he was clocking some pretty mean hours at his firm while working towards his MBA at night and I had to relocate to Oxford for my job.  We agreed to see where it went and saw each other on the weekends.  Long distance relationships are the pits, but weekends were better than no Mike at all…  So glad we gave it a whirl!
Describe the proposal.
It was Mike’s turn to make the haul to Oxford.  I was in the kitchen cooking red beans and rice with my six-year-old, Joe.  I’m pretty sure the ring was burning a hole in Mike’s pocket.  As I was stirring the beans, I saw him moving behind me, when I turned around he was on one knee asking me to be his wife.
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
Beautiful, Relaxed, and HOT!
Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
Definitely Pure 7 Studio’s Fun Booth…  The guests had a blast playing with the different props and taking wacky photos.  It was a great way to include everyone in the fun!
What Southern details or traditions did you include in your celebration?  What was Southern about your wedding?
Everything!  I wanted a truly Southern garden wedding.  For starters, the ceremony site was under a 600 year old live oak with Spanish moss draping down.  The groom and his groomsmen wore seersucker suits which is traditional attire for the Southern lawyer. (i.e. Matlock) The décor consisted of lace, burlap, vintage mason jars and Wolfe studio birds -a must collection for any southern girl. The guests were greeted at the reception with our signature Southern cocktails of lemonade and firefly sweet tea served, of course, in mason jars.   Townsend Catering served Southern food with flair.  There was a wishing tree where guests could write wishes for the future or share advice for a happy marriage.  My something old was my great grandmother’s wedding band.  It was attached to my bouquet so she could escort me down the aisle…4 generations of steel magnolias and 122 years old…now that’s old! My something new is the Sorrelli bracelet that Mike bought me.  Sorelli’s are designed to become heirlooms, handed down through generations. My something borrowed was the cake knife.  Mike’s parents used it at their wedding, 37 years ago! And my something blue were my bridesmaid’s dresses and a very cheesy garter belt!

by in Contests on

I’ve always pushed for a week long celebration of my birth, but it always gets paired down to a single day. Thank goodness that we celebrate Southern Weddings Magazine’s birth week. We celebrated our Second Blogaversary in style with a week of fantastic giveaways. All birth weeks must come to an end (until next year) but I wanted to squeeze one more day of Blogaversary excitement in to announce the winners of all of our many contests:

We asked readers to send us their favorite memories of their significant other for a chance to win a 12 month subscription to Wedding Window to make their very own wedding website.

Congratulations to Amanda H and Sydney D!

One of my favorite memories of my dear and I was right after he proposed–we were so excited! Most people would break open a bottle of champagne, or spend a night on the town, but the first thing that we wanted to do was to go get celebratory ice cream cones. We go back there all the time, not only because the ice cream is delicious, but because we always like to reminisce about our wonderful, and very “us,” engagement celebration.

April 5, 2010 | Amanda H

I am a girl who truly enjoys anything special. I am easily amused, lucky for my sweetie. My sophomore year of college (we had just started dating), the flu attacked me. When I get sick, I really get sick. I did not look like hot stuff- skin was broken out, my hair was a mess, my nose was dry and red and I was totally rockin’ the sweats. Lucas (previously noted as ‘sweetie’), asked if we could spend some time together but I let him know that I was a walking viral plague and that he probably did not want to see me. He played it cool and said we would hang out soon. Well, not a hour later I hear the doorbell ring. I hesitantly went to the door, and who do I see? You guessed it; ‘sweetie’. Insecure as I was, I found strength to open the door and let him see my zombie(ish) features. He answered, “Hello beautiful.” That was all it took and I was ready to say “I do!” He had my favorite smoothie in one hand and a single rose and ‘The Little Mermaid” (my FAVE movie of all time) in the other. I will NEVER forget how special and beautiful he made me feel when I had previously felt like death. From that moment on, I knew that he was a keeper!

Chaviano Bridal Couture has some of the best veils around! Traci has been selected as the winner of a custom veil from Annette at Chaviano Bridal Couture:

________________________________________________________________________________________

What a wonderful giveaway! My gown is ivory satin with a wonderful vintage-y art-deco lace inset, and I’d love just the right veil to complement it. In my mind’s eye I see a float of ivory net, wafting to my fingertips, with gorgeous lace accents that evoke that 1930’s Hollywood glamour feel. It should complement the dress and the vintage jewelry, yet have an elegant and unique personality of its own… think Rita Hayworth glamour coupled with Katherine Hepburn sass. :-)

It looks like the Southern Weddings editors aren’t the only ones obsessed with Mika78! Hannah S. will get 50 custom thank you cards. She chose the Botanicals design from Mika 78 as her very favorite.

________________________________________________________________________________________

First on the website and first in my heart, my favorite design is Botanicals. I love the simple yet elegant feel of the plain white with just a peek of color peeking over the corners. I also love the way they are held together with the Victorian style monogram print in the center. It is the perfect blend of antique and modern.

Did you register for china? We posed this question for the chance to win a gorgeous classic crystal vase from Wedgwood China. Congratulations to Randi E., who was selected as the winner (and has, coincidentally, registered for china):

We registered for china so that we could have nice dishes to use for sunday dinners, holidays and special occasions. We registered at Macy’s for the Wedgewood “Golden Bird” collection. I can’t wait to start getting some of the pieces in!!

I am a humongous chocolate fan, so I am super excited to announce that June W. will get 25 favor boxes from Delysia Chocolatier (that’s 50 pieces of chocolate) for her special day. Lucky, lucky. Plus, she provided tips on the correct way savor chocolates:

________________________________________________________________________________________

Having worked in a gourmet chocolate shop, I think it would be a great addition to my wedding! Our date is November 21, 2010, and I think I would be a great recipient bc I truly know HOW to appreciate chocolate. Did you know you’re never supposed to chew it!? Press it between the back of your tongue and the roof of your mouth and let it melt. Enjoy!

April 9, 2010 | June W

________________________________________________________________________________________

In addition, Delysia Chocolatier has a special offer for Southern Weddings readers! Readers will get a complimentary 9-piece signature collection if they place an order over $400 by April 19th. This is perfect for the newly weds to enjoy in their room with a glass of champagne. If you would like to take part in this special offer, please email Nicole at [email protected].

Cufflinks 2 Wear offers amazing cufflinks to add that little something to the groom’s attire. We asked readers to tell us why their man is the best. Congratulations to Rachel L. and her yo-yo pro groom. They will get 5 pairs of cufflinks for all the groomsmen (who hopefully can also yo-yo like pros).

________________________________________________________________________________________

My groom is the best because:
1) he buys me a bottle of wine and draws me a bath when I have a bad day
2) he moved all the way to Georgia to support me in school
3) he can yo-yo like a pro
4) he has the most hilarious sense of humor I’ve ever seen!

Yes, we’re back with more from Amy + Carl’s Texas wedding at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.  Special thanks to Cesar + Tanya Perez for sharing their work with us!  I’m almost as much a fan of the soft white and pale blue accents of the couple’s floral arrangements from Apples to Zinnia as the adorable figurines (made by the bride herself) decorating the multi-layered confection from Panini Bakery.  Too cute!  Kudos to Roxie Bentaur of Society Affairs for designing and planning this sweetly Southern wedding.

Describe your wedding cake:  Our cake was so delicious!  Carl designed most of it with the help of our baker.  It had our wedding colors of blue, brown and white, with three layers white cake and three different fillings: raspberry white chocolate ganache, cappuccino and amaretto.  I made the cake topper out of clay to resemble Carl and I in our wedding attire! Our cake was so good that we didn’t have any slices left over.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
Our first dance. We danced to Beck’s cover of Daniel Johnston’s song “True Love Will Find You in the End,” and it was just such a romantic, private moment.  We thought that we would feel very self-conscious with 95 pairs of eyes on us, but we forgot about everyone else and just focused on each other.
Scariest moment?
Part of our ceremony included drinking out of a special goblet called a German Wedding Cup.  This cup allows two people to drink out of it at once, but it requires some artful maneuvering to successfully pull it off.  I was so afraid that we would spill wine all over ourselves, but it ended up going very smoothly and was a fun and personal way to conclude our ceremony.
Funniest moment? The arboretum had a display of fairy tale houses set up on the grounds.  One of the houses was shaped like a pirate ship, so the groomsmen had fun posing like pirates.  We only wish we had thought to bring eye patches for everyone!
Three adjectives that describe the day are: Joyous, festive and fast!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase/verse/line? Yes, we wrote our own vows.  My favorite line from Carl’s vows was that he wanted me to be his “partner in crime.”  I love thinking about us as being in cahoots, secretly building this wonderful life together.
Best advice or most memorable comment someone made to you during the wedding celebration: My great-aunt and great-uncle pulled me aside during the reception to let me know they were about to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, and hoped Carl and I would have an equally long and happy marriage.

Congratulations, Amy + Carl!  We wish you both all the best in your new life together!
