Friends, I am tickled pink to be able to introduce our newest team member to you today – Catherine Marks!

If you recognize that smiling face, then major bonus points to you (and it probably means you’ve been reading for a long time!). We first met Catherine when we featured her sparkling winter wedding to Will in 2015. (And it is a stunner – go take a peek!) She wowed us then with her thoughtful interview and meaningful wedding day details, and has only continued to delight us since she joined our team in May.

That’s right, May! :) Catherine joined our team at the same time as Kaylee (whom some of you may have met if you’ve emailed us with a customer service question!), but since she went on to have a sweet baby in July, we decided to formally introduce her to y’all once she was back from leave.

Well, she’s here, and we couldn’t be more excited for you to meet her! Though we joked throughout this process that we weren’t just hiring a new team member, we were hiring a new friend, it’s true! One of the greatest joys of the work we do is doing it alongside each other. A company culture that fosters this kind of team unity has become one of the biggest blessings of my life, and it makes our hiring decisions really, really important!

Just as our team dynamic is so incredibly important to us, it’s equally important that we have someone caring for our readers who understands and lives our mission. Catherine has quickly become one of the most enthusiastic members of our team, pitching in any and everywhere across both Southern Weddings and Cultivate What Matters. You can expect to find her doing the same from here on out, both behind the scenes and here on the blog!

What a gem this lady is to our team! Now, without further ado, meet the lovely Catherine Marks!

Tell us how you joined the team in a few sentences: I’m a long-time Southern Weddings fan (I know I’m not the only one still loyally reading years after my wedding day!), PowerSheets user, and Making Things Happen Conference alum. I have always had so much love and respect for this team from afar; I even told my husband at one point that if I could just work with the SW and CWM gals I would have my dream job. As luck would have it, I was in a transitional period in my life, knowing I was to be a new mama soon, when they posted that they were searching for a new team member. I never dreamed I would actually get the job, but God had other plans, and here I am!

What have you been doing since May? I have been loving my job! Can you believe that my very first “assignment” was to get my hair and makeup done for our team photo shoot at Fearrington Village? Granted, not every day is that glamorous, but most days are that fun! Starting out with the Cultivate Team Summit was like getting three months of information and team bonding done in three days! Since then, I’ve been editing and drafting blog posts, managing the beautiful Blue Ribbon Vendor Directory, helping out with V10 and our weekly newsletter, and gearing up for the 2018 PowerSheets release on October 25th! On a personal note, I also gave birth to my baby girl, Victoria.

What else will you be doing in the coming months? I am so excited to be able to write and share more from a personal perspective now that you know who I am! I have such a passion for both sides of our business — for encouraging women to cultivate what matters, right where they are, whether they’re brides, business owners, or new moms. I’m also coming back from leave at a great time, as both Kristin and Marissa are due to give birth soon and I’ll be taking on some of their responsibilities for the next few months!

Hometown and where you live now: I’m from Southeast Missouri (Charleston and Cape Girardeau, MO) and live in Arlington, VA now.

Birthday: September 28

Something others might not know about me: I am a proud (fourth generation) farmer’s daughter!

Favorite part about being on team: Since “everything” is a boring answer, I’ll narrow it down to two very broad things: the work I do and the people I do it with. It is such a joy to do work that I believe so strongly in and love so much. It’s cliche, but it truly never feels like a job! And then, of course, to work with these eight incredible women who are so much more than coworkers is a daily blessing I hope I never take for granted!

Friends, please help us give Catherine a big SW welcome in the comments below! She’s been such a delight to our team, and we know you are going to love her just as much as we do! You can also say hi and get to know her on Instagram.

Welcome Catherine! As a fellow Southeast Missouri girl (I grew up in Perryville!) who went to college in St. Louis, I’ve been such a fan of your beautiful wedding for a long time. :)

One of the moments we dream about most as engaged gals is finding the dress! But like most wedding planning to dos, your shopping excursions are likely to go more smoothly with a little preparation. Last week, I shared a glossary of bridal designers to help you decide which shops may carry your dream dress. But once you’ve decided where you’re going, the next question is, who’s going with you?

Bridal appointments can be one of the sweetest highlights of the wedding planning process, which also makes them a great opportunity to invite loved ones to be part of the fun. As we shared on the pages of our Joyful Wedding Planner, though, the personalities of your companions is key. Choosing a dress can sometimes be a difficult decision, and you only want people there who are supportive and will put your vision first.

Other than that, there are about as many potential shopping crews as there are dresses! It’s ultimately a very personal decision, and the makeup can range from mom only to the entire bridal party, grandparents, cousins, future in-laws, and even dad and sometimes the groom! To help you decide who will make up your entourage, we asked a few of our friends to share their dress-shopping stories!

I brought my mom and my mother-in-law with me to my bridal salon appointment. I felt that having a large entourage would get overwhelming, and I would run the risk of not getting to express my own opinion. My mom was two years into her diagnosis with brain cancer at the time that I got engaged, so I was trying my best to create joyful experiences for us to share together during that exciting time. My mom was the person who picked my dress, and when she saw it on me she started crying, I started crying, and we both knew it was the one. It was so special to share that joyful moment with her during such a trying time.

I brought the two people who can’t help but be honest to a girl: her mama and her little sister! My sister had recently gotten married, and is the funnier, feistier version of me, so I knew she wouldn’t hold back in stating her opinion … ha! Also, I wholeheartedly recommend the ponytail holder trick: I tied my hair up for each gown to see what it’d REALLY look like, and in retrospect, I wished I’d fluffed it up with a little more aerosol hairspray and made a pretty messy bun for that Saturday. My gym-style quick top knot was helpful enough, but I learned it’s certainly tough to envision your wedding day look without your hair in a similar fashion to your wedding day. I also put on a bit more make-up so I didn’t look like I’d just woken up, which helped, too!

The first time I tried on wedding dresses, I brought both of my parents and my grandparents. It was more of a “fun” appointment, where I tried on a bunch of different styles so I could get a feel for what I liked. Very quickly, I realized that everyone seemed to have an opinion and I knew that I wanted the next appointment to be different, so I decided to bring only my mom with me. It’s really true when they say, “when you know, you’ll know.” I remember my mom saying through her tears, “Tell me all the reasons that you love it,” and I did. Standing there in the dress that I knew I would walk down the aisle in, I listed off all the reasons that I loved it out loud and that was all that I needed. Don’t let other people’s opinions take over your own!
— Callie Davis of Call Me Callie and Nancy Ray Photography, @calliepittsdavis (See Callie’s wedding!)

I took my mom and my best friend, Jill! My mom was a no-brainer because I value her opinion and wanted her to love my dress as well. She knows what looks best on me. My best friend was fabulous moral support, and she has great style! Definitely don’t feel pressured to take a lot of people along with you (including mother-in-law). You want to feel 100% comfortable walking out in different dresses (some will flatter you and some will not). Sometimes too many opinions can just confuse you when you should be focusing on what it is you want rather than Aunt Martha or whoever!
— Courtney Whitmore of Pizzazzerie, @pizzazzerie (See Courtney’s wedding inspiration!)

During my first round of bridal appointments, it was just me and my mom! Then, she and my little sister came back to visit one weekend and we had our second round – which is when I found my dress! I grew up watching “Say Yes to the Dress” and had watched brides have their appointments with just family or with a big group of loved ones. While it would have been fun to have friends and other family members around, I loved how intimate it was to just have that moment shared between the three of us. Plus, I can be fairly indecisive about personal decisions, so keeping these appointments intimate was a great way to avoid too much input and truly go with the dress I loved best! Oh, and I made sure to call my grandma from the salon right after finding the one – she had to be included too even though she wasn’t physically there with us!

Each team summit is totally different from the last. Not just because we may be welcoming new team members or talking about new topics, but because each year that passes brings us into a totally new season of business. Some years bring challenging conflict, high stakes, and multiple priorities. Some years are full of fun brainstorming, unpacking new ideas, and finding new inspiration. Either way, we consider our summit to be precious time together.

Even though half of us work remotely, we don’t take it lightly that we have the great privilege of calling each other team members. Most of us have been working (read: spending most of our waking hours) together and sharing everyday life with each other for the past seven years! On top of that, we each bring our personal passions into our work, making this summit not just a business formality, but a time to gather and bring our greatest goals to life.

We got cozy at Fearrington Village’s Garden House for three days of quality time.

Lifeguard Press was so kind, and gifted us each a Kate Spade journal to take notes in. They also threw in extra dahlia-patterned tumblers, pencil pouches, napkins, and straws. All of our new supplies got put to good use during our two days together.

One of our big priorities this year is focusing on workplace health — it actually increases productivity in addition to making you a healthier person! We chatted about how to improve our daily work lives with standing meetings, posture exercises, and color theory, and then had a blast with an outdoor yoga class! (Y’all, some ladies on our team are crazy flexible! I learned that I am just as unbalanced as ever.)

Later, we were incredibly grateful to have our friend Will Ray speak to us about what makes effective teams. He also walked us through our DiSC profile results. Our entire team was solidly representing the Influence and Steadiness quadrants, which are marked by collaboration and enthusiasm, and cooperation and sincerity.

While we did get a good laugh at how skewed our results were, we weren’t at all surprised. Our office culture is marked by enthusiasm for our jobs, and we place a high value on team unity. That’s why it seemed perfectly natural to us that after a full day’s work, we were still looking forward to spending time together at dinner and then getting into our pajamas for a full-on Disney sing-a-long in our hotel room. (Thank goodness our rooms were thoughtfully isolated from other guests!)

Day Two was a game-changer. We showed up ready to get down to business in our new Birdie’s Slippers. (Y’all — they are the best way to look professional while feeling like you’re wearing PJs!) Then, we dove into heartfelt (and yes, sometimes hard) conversation.

To break things up, we scattered in some fun activities (like a scavenger hunt, a nail polish trade from Kendra Scott’s new line, and chair massages). Our favorite activity? A surprise mini baby shower for our dearest editor in chief, Kristin!

After smothering Kristin with love, baby name guessing, and fun games, we narrowed our focus back to business and creating a strategy for the future. This meant studying graphs (it’s more fascinating than it sounds!), engaging in good and healthy conflict, and stripping away the layers of routine to answer important questions with new ideas.

Needless to say, we thought we really earned some of Fearrington’s famous ice cream sandwiches after all of it, and Chef Bedford happily obliged and delivered!

So what are we up to now that the summit is over? We’re making big and small changes—some behind the scenes, and some right in front of your eyes! We’ve simplified our website navigation so it’s easier to find exactly what you’re looking for, and we’re rolling out more content that will help you prioritize what’s meaningful in your wedding. On top of all of that, we’re having fun inside and outside the office soaking in the magic of the South and living our lives with you!

Love seeing the joy among all of you! Thanks for giving us a peek behind the scenes.
