Wedding dress shopping is hard work.  Wedding dress shopping in Hong Kong is really hard work.  But that’s exactly what this South African bride had to do.  Seeing as how her Lusan Mandongus lace gown fits like a dream, though, it’s hard to believe Sofia had any trouble at all finding her dress.  (L.O.V.E. the feminine bow + button details in the back!)  Sofia + Graeme were married at the Rockhaven Farm in sunny South Africa and photographed by SW favorite Christine Meintijes.  The bride wore a sophisticated birdcage veil from The Wedding Box, and her attendants were summer-ready in violet frocks from the London-based Wallis and Truworth’s.  Check back soon for the couple’s reception pictures!

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story.  Graeme and I met at university in the small, remote town of Grahamstown in South Africa. We both studied journalism, and I had a small crush on Graeme. He was definitely one of the cool kids, and I was a bit shy.Our encounters at university were brief, and somewhat awkward – like that time he walked me home, spent a few minutes talking to me on the porch (I was hoping he’d kiss me!), knocked on the front door, and kindly asked my flat mate to put me to bed.  (I was still discovering the strength of alcohol.)  After Graeme graduated we didn’t see each other again for years, when we randomly bumped into each other at a house party in London. Initially, I was very nervous to talk to him but managed to pluck up the courage. My first words were, “Do you remember me?” When he said he did, I was relieved.  We spent that evening catching up and laughing so much that we missed the last train. The next day, a friend of mine invited me to a picnic on Wimbledon Common. Out of courtesy, I thought I’d ask Graeme to join but never thought he’d say yes, since he was still wearing the same clothes from the night before, but he said yes… and the rest is history.
Describe the proposal.
Graeme and I had planned a quick trip to Hong Kong to check it out before moving here. On one of our free days, we took a ferry to Lantau Island.  We had a lovely day exploring the island and by chance ended up at a lovely South African restaurant on the beach for lunch. I popped into the change room to put on my bathing suit, and when I got back to the table Graeme was acting a bit strange. He asked me to sit down and then said, “Do you love me?” to which I replied, “Duh, yes, of course!” He then put a box on the table. I remember my heart racing… and then I was crying… and then I was saying, “Graeme, you have to get on one knee, don’t you!?” And he did.
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
Relaxed, warm and fun.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was:
We created a photo-booth with a dress up box and a camera on a tripod. We both love dress up, and this gave the guests something fun and different to do throughout the night.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress: Finding my wedding dress was a nightmare!
I was new to Hong Kong and had no idea where to look. I was lucky to have two friends who were also engaged. The three of us hit one of Hong Kong’s Wedding Malls where we perused four floors of wedding dresses and shoes, but I couldn’t find anything I liked. I then found out about a local designer, Lusan Mandongus. I found my dress at the LM store, and knew it was the one instantly!

Skip Hopkins, your portraits are totally 100% wow-worthy.  The end.  Sure, Erin + Adam are a gorgeous couple (no, seriously, a lovely, gorgeous couple), but these post-ceremony shots of the newlyweds are just stunning.  I’m going to channel Emily for a minute and point out the understated centerpieces (arranged by the bride herself, no less), the too-cute “bride” and “groom” chair signs and pretty grey and white cake from Signature Cakes by Vicki.  For more to die for images from Erin + Adam’s Tennessee celebration, visit Skip’s original blog post here

Describe your wedding cake: Our wedding cake was a three-tiered grey cake with white lace floral appliqué.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day? Definitely walking down the aisle. It was a big moment. Having my dad give me away, seeing my husband-to-be waiting at the end for me and, of course, the musician Adam hired as a surprise to sing my favorite Rufus Wainwright song! It was something I’ll never forget for as long as I live!
Did you write your own vows? If so, what was your favorite phrase, verse or line? We did! My romantic husband planned a picnic on Valentines Day in the garden where we would be married six months later. We had our picnic and wrote our vows. The thing I loved most about our vows was that they were so real. Most traditional vows promise to love, honor and cherish, which is very sweet and a lovely promise, but what about the times when you are not loving? What about the times were you are struggling or have heartache? We vowed to love each other even when the other is cranky or not able to love back.
What’s next for you as a couple? What are you looking forward to in the future? Since the wedding I quit my full-time job and am enjoying working part-time designing wedding invitations, stationery and, most recently, interior design, and am just loving it. Adam is still working in medical sales. Outside of work, we’ve been traveling and spending time with our amazing friends and family and our puppy. We are incredibly blessed and really enjoy living life together!

Congratulations, Erin + Adam!  Love and hugs from your friends at Southern Weddings!

Hey y’all!  Katharine and I had a fabulous time meeting readers and bees at Foster’s Market last month!  We lucked out with a sunny day, and filled three picnic tables with wedding chatter and delicious food for more than two hours.  Mrs. Pineapple, Mrs. Bunny, and Mrs. Lamb were in attendance, as well as ten or so other lovely ladies.  My boyfriend John and Katharine’s fiance Kyle also tagged along, and I think had fun in spite of themselves (though their presence did throw off the first few readers to arrive!).  Big thanks to Bunny and Lamb for the photos!

One of the guests, Emily, was getting married two weeks from our Saturday meetup!  Coincidentally, her photographer, Nancy Ray, had just submitted her bridals for a blog feature the week before.  I thought it would be fun to share a few as part of our recap.

And, just for kicks, a few from her engagement shoot, because it was super cute:

Fun fact: there were THREE Emilys at the meetup, and we were sitting in a triangle for most of the morning.   Other (REALLY) fun fact: somehow during the conversation, Mrs. Bunny and I realized that our fathers had graduated in the same class from the United States Coast Guard Academy!  I called up my Dad, who immediately knew exactly who Mrs. Bunny’s father is, and, in fact, told me that they stood just one person apart in alphabetical order throughout their four years.  Crazy, huh?

Everyone in attendance agreed that it would be fun to do something similar for the next SW issue release, so plan for a low key Chapel Hill soiree in August, ladies and gents!  Gelato and cupcakes at Sugarland, anyone?

  5. avatar Southern Weddings reply

Hi Molly! I believe Emily actually made her own headband, and I’m pretty sure she has a site where she sells her jewelry. Hopefully she’ll hop on here and chime in!Emily @ SW
