Hi ladies + gents! “Marrying” is a sub-column within Marissa’s usual Southern Style column where she translates the style of a beloved Southern movie, play, or book to weddings! Enjoy! — Emily

Beloved is quite right, Emily! And let me tell y’all, Sweet Home Alabama is right up there on my most beloved movie list. I could watch it over and over again and never get tired of Melanie saying” you’ve got a baby… in a bar!”

Speaking of the fab Ms. Melanie (Smooter) Carmichael, can we just start by talking about how stylish she is! From her one-shoulder LBD to her perfectly spunky bobbed haircut – this girl has some serious Southern style! Not to mention the giant sparkling rock she sports throughout the movie!

One of the best scenes (for us sparkle-lovers) is when Andrew proposes to Melanie inside of Tiffany’s. Oh, when those lights go on and all the salespeople put out their little black velvet square – ah, pure movie magic! And if you’re looking for more diamond inspiration, check out the newly engaged Emily’s post on engagement rings 101.

Since Melanie did not have a full court, I’m imagining what her girls would have worn. In my opinion, she would have outfitted her maids’ in sophisticated black frocks similar to her fab on-shoulder number she wore earlier in the movie. Bridesmaids in LBD’s are becoming more and more popular and I must admit I am a huge fan! This sleek and slimming b’maid option can be dressed up with formal accessories like pearls and updo’s or casualized with colorful heels and a short, flirty length. P.S. Can you spot the Miss Emily looking gorg in her black gown?

For her plantation wedding to Andrew, Melanie went right back to her Southern roots by opting for an all-white bouquet. This monochromatic look is pure flower goodness! It’s looks classic and sophisticated without being stuffy. Yes, please!

I’ll be the first to admit it – I love plantation weddings! There is just something so Southern and classic about tying the knot on the landing of so much tradition. Even though Melanie did not grow up on the Carmichael Plantation, she she couldn’t help but squirmed her way right onto their lawn. To be quite honest, I don’t blame her!

Weekly Round-Up

by in Main on

Hello friends! It’s the very first round-up that March has ever seen! To make the transition from February to March, we decided to take a look back on some of our favorite things. First, we celebrated another year of our talented and one-of-a-kind editor, Emily. Her birthday was on Monday! (You can join in on our love fest here.)

Then we wrapped up January and February with our new Monthly Round-Ups. See January’s here and February’s here and tell us what your favorite details of the month were, too.

Whitney
brought us another great giveaway this week with an eco-friendly twist. Andrea Bonelli Jewelry designs had Whitney swooning. Take a look at some of Andrea’s pieces and you might, too! Enter to win a $75 gift certificate by leaving a comment on the original post.

Don’t forget to take a look at the wedding we posted this week! Lauren + Russ’s Texas wedding from V3 had great Southern details. My favorite? The personalized handkerchief Lauren gave her dad. See the wedding here and here.

This week’s round-up is short and sweet, but y’all know I can’t leave without some kind of send-off! Here it is, an awesome photo by The Image is Found. I hope your weekend is full of adventure.

Now go pull on your boots and have a good time!

Ahhh! I love the boots. Everything is so simple and so Southern. Nice!

  3. avatar Peyton reply

I LOVE the invitations used in the Lauren + Russ’s Texas wedding but I’m having a hard time finding them. Is there anyway you could let me know the name of the printing company? Thanks!

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Peyton! Great question! Lauren and Russ actually made all of the paper goods themselves, so you probably won’t find them in stores! Lauren is a photographer (http://www.laurenmcclurephoto.com/), so you might try contacting her for more information!

Emily: Thank you so much Emily! I will get in touch with her!

February was another stunning month for real weddings at SW, and we’ve rounded up our favorite bits and pieces to share with you today!

This month’s guest editor is Sierra, one of our intrepid interns. She’s responsible for all of the amazing graphics you see on the blog, and for some great picks this month!

FAVORITE WEDDING DRESS: Score one for budget brides! Alison’s David’s Bridal dress was my pick for the month (here + here). Katharine fell for Christine’s Lace Blossom number (here + here), while Sierra adored Tara’s Romona Keveza (and the edits Tara made to it!).

FAVORITE BRIDESMAID DRESS: Navy ruled again this month, as Sierra and I chose Katie + Matt’s Monique Lhuillier bridesmaid dresses (here + here) and Katharine chose Alison and Manny’s, available from Dillard’s! (More here + here.)

FAVORITE FEMALE ACCESSORY: Katharine loved Amanda’s bridesmaid clutches so much she organized a giveaway featuring them! They were obviously her pick (here). Sierra loved Alison’s chunky pearl necklace just like our readers (here)! And I chose Tara’s gorgeous lace veil (here).

FAVORITE MENSWEAR: Just like Sierra couldn’t get enough of Katie + Matt’s bridesmaid fashion, she was crushing on the groom’s + groomsmen’s looks, too! (More here.) My pick was EASY: hands-down the dress blues from Tara + Chris’ wedding (here + here). Katharine says her choice was easy, too — the too-cute ring bearers from Shannon + Chris’ wedding (here + here)!

FAVORITE DETAIL: Too many good ones to choose from this month! Katharine settled on Katie’s short hair (here + here), while I chose Tara + Chris’s needlepoint ring pillow (here). Sierra went for Christine + Iaan’s bunting (an excellent pick, I might add!). (More here + here!)

FAVORITE BOUQUET: White peonies will get a girl every time, which is why Christine’s bouquet was my pick (here). Sierra chose Tara’s, my other favorite (here), while Katharine went for Michelle’s bridesmaid blooms (here).

FAVORITE SWEET: Surprise, surprise: all three of us chose a treat from Christine + Iaan’s sugarific wedding! Sierra loved the mini milkshakes, while I chose the polka dot cake, and Katharine, the ice cream cones. Sweet! More here.

FAVORITE PHOTO: January set the bar high for poignant portraits, but February did not disappoint. My favorite turned out to be Chase Kuhn’s shot from Amanda + Jared’s wedding (here). Katharine, who loves her father a LOT, chose the photo of Michelle and her father dancing (here). Sierra chose Julie Lim’s ice cream kiss photo from Christine + Iaan’s wedding (here).

FAVORITE WEDDING OVERALL: It was close, but Sierra + I eventually chose Christine + Iaan’s wedding as our favorite, while Katharine went for Michelle + King’s (it WAS in Virginia, after all!).

How about you? Which was your favorite wedding? What do you think of our picks?

I was wondering are those marshmallow ice cream cones. They are adorable, but look too clean to be the good stuff. I want to steal the idea for my candy buffet.

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Adrienne! Christine would have to chime in to give us the real scoop (har har), but my hunch is that the ice cream cones are actually plastic! If you’d like to do something similar for your candy buffet, I’d suggest making cupcake cones — I’m sure you can find a recipe online, but you basically bake the cake batter in an ice cream cone, and then use the frosting for the “ice cream” on top! Best of luck!

I love love love Alison’s David’s Bridal Dress too! Do you know what style it is?

    • avatar Emily reply

Hi Laura! I’m not exactly sure, but my hunch is it’s this one: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Strapless-Shantung-Taffeta-Sweetheart-Ball-Gown-T3039_Bridal-Gowns-Features-All-Gowns. Maybe she removed the bow? Best of luck with your search!
