Southern Weddings

We may be biased (okay… we are definitely biased), but we truly think Southern Weddings is one of the most beautiful magazines on newsstands.  We owe a ton of that beauty to the many, many talented photographers whose work has graced our pages, but a lion’s share of the credit goes to one very special lady: Kathryn Murray.

Lara frequently suggests that her LC Reps clients ditch their Trajan or Bickham font logos in favor of something more unique, something designed just for them, something that no one will have seen before.  After hearing this sound piece of advice over and over, we finally took it to heart and decided to do the same with our November issue.

And luckily — oh so luckily — we found the perfect partner in Kathryn Murray.  When I say that Kathryn went above and beyond for us, that is not even close to the half of it.  In fact, I’d say that’s not even close to one sixteenth of it.  She responded to our myriad (and, at times, absurd!) requests quickly and graciously, always returning with a scanned file more beautiful than the last.  I can only imagine what a dream she would be to work with as a bride.

In the end, her original work graced almost every single one of the pages in the November 2009 issue, from the cover to the destination weddings section at the back of the book.  Most impressive?  Kathryn wrote out all twelve of our real wedding couples’ names — and every. single. page number.  Just a sampling:

Needless to say, we are huge fans of Kathryn and hope to work with her for quite a few years to come.  And, judging by the response her work has gotten since the issue debuted, y’all are pretty pleased with her as well!  If you, too, are a fan of Kathryn’s work, we invite you to check out her site, her Etsy store, and her Facebook page.

And if you happen to be a new member of the SW community (welcome!) and are wondering what all the buzz about this print edition is, take a peek inside our latest issue right here!  And, if you’re so inclined, you can purchase a copy of your very own right here!

Aaaaand guess what?  We’re just about ready to start gearing up for our next issue!  In fact, we nailed down our first real wedding for it last week, and let me tell y’all, it is DYNAMITE!  Since I have no shame, I am not afraid to tell you that when I got the word the wedding was all ours, I was embarrassingly excited — we’re talking happy dance, high-pitched squealing, and shouts of glee.  Oh yeah!  Who else is excited?!

I was reading your latest post when I spotted a feature of the Tiffany keys from your November issue. I was so excited, because my husband gave me a Tiffany key as my wedding gift for our August wedding, and my brother gave me one of the smaller silver ones also! We incorporated antique keys as an element of our wedding, and both of them had the brilliant idea to get me one of the Tiffany keys as a gift, without telling the other. Who knew they were both such trend setters! I wear it everyday and remember my big day. I think they are great bridal or wedding party gifts (or an any occasion gift for that matter)…

How’s this for some Friday fun?!  For a while now we’ve wanted to have some rockin’ SW apparel to offer to y’all (because that’s just the kind of people we are), but we’ve been a bit too busy to do anything about it.  (Ahem: November 2009 print edition, we’re looking at you.  You, too, MTH.)  SO.  Here’s our plan.  You’re going to do it for us!  We kid, we kid.  But… not really.  Because we’re holding a t-shirt design contest!

Rules:

–All entries must be in .psd, .ai, or .pdf form

–All entries must be 300 DPI

–You may use a maximum of three colors

–You may submit a combo design (i.e. both a front of/back of shirt design)

–The background of your design must be the color you’d like the shirt printed on

–You must use the SW logo somewhere in the design (you can find a link to a selection of downloadable logos in the right margin of this here blog or a high-res pdf here)

And that’s that!  This contest is open to readers and professional designers alike.  All entries are due February 1, 2010.  Entries can be emailed to emily at iloveswmag dot com.

Oh wait, what’s that?  You want to WIN something for your hard work?  Okay!  How about a complimentary t-shirt, a $50 Visa gift card, and bragging rights for eternity?  Oh yeah!

Happy weekend!  Who’s coming to see us in Dallas next week?

I love getting emails from Genya and Wesleyann of Vue Photography because the weddings they photograph always seem to match their personalities: sunny and warm.  Katie + Andy’s fabulously bright reception is no exception!  From the ridiculously beautiful florals by Nouveau Fowers to the carefully mixed-and-matched tablecloths, this wedding has, shall we say, got it going on.  Add in a photobooth, a delightfully plush couch, a beautiful white wedding cake and an unnervingly life-like groom’s cake from Confections on the Coast, and you’ve got yourself a Southern Wedding of the Week.  For even more details, check out Vue’s blog here!

Tell us about finding your wedding dress:  This was the only part of the planning process that stressed me out. It probably comes as a surprise to most people that know me that I was not stressed out about everything because I am very “Type A.”   I thought I knew what kind of dress I wanted , so I found the one place in Atlanta that carried it . . .  and it did not look at all how I imagined it  would!  The only thing I knew for certain was that I did not want a strapless gown.  My mother saw a dress on another girl in the shop, but she was reluctant to tell me to try it on because we’d been so unsuccessful.  I finally did try it and it was perfect!  My mother was reluctant to tell me to try it because we had been so unsuccessful thus far.  As always . . . mother’s (especially mine) do know best.
Describe your wedding flowers:
The flowers were absolutely beautiful.  I had found a bouquet that was very avant-garde with lots of color.  I knew everyone was going to think I was crazy, but when I showed Christina from Nouveau Flowers, she loved it.  She did such a wonderful job of re-creating the bouquet but really making it original.  It was exactly what I wanted.  The flowers on the tables and in the chapel were absolutely gorgeous.  I could not have imagined it any better.
Describe your
wedding cake: It was very simple . . . yet very complicated in the way the sugar rose petals fell on the layers.  The petals looked real.  It was understated, but beautiful and elegant, and it tasted as good as it looked.
Were there any
wedding traditions or new ideas you included in the wedding?  We had a family friend read the same poem that was read at my parents’ wedding.  We also had our Great Dane, Hank, walk down the aisle,  One of our good friends, Jack, was in Iraq and could not be in the wedding, so his mother provided a life-size cut-out “Flat Jack” so that he could stand with the groomsmen.
What’s next for you as a couple?  What are you looking forward to in the future?
We have not taken our honeymoon yet, and plan to in the spring, so we are looking forward to a vacation.  We are also looking forward to growing together as a couple.  It will be fun to share the holidays married.  We are also looking forward to starting a family.  There are so many things to look forward to in the future and we are just excited to do it together as best friends.
