Southern Weddings

Category: Wedding Films

One of the most magical things about weddings is the way they bring people together who would have never been in the same room otherwise. Your high school friends sit next to your coworkers at your ceremony. Your cousins cut a rug with your sorority sisters. Most importantly, your family and your beau’s family celebrate together under one roof. Sarah and Giancarlo’s wedding brought together her sweet, undeniably Southern community and his family and friends all the way from Peru, and despite the language barriers and cultural differences, the love and joy over this darling couple’s union is palpable! We’re so glad our Blue Ribbon Vendor Twenty-One Films shared their highlights film with us–don’t miss it below!

From the bride:

Giancarlo and I met through one of my neighbors. Since Giancarlo and I work in similar fields and he had just finished up his MBA, my neighbor put us in touch for networking purposes. A few weeks later, he and I met up at a local coffee shop and sat there for three hours, hardly discussing business :) The following summer, Giancarlo had to move back to Peru. I traveled down to see him a few months after he moved, and he proposed on the beach in Paracas. The next year was spent with him in Peru and me in the States. After fifteen months of living in different counties, he finally came back to the US and we were married on October 4, 2014.

By far, the most memorable moment of our wedding day was when Giancarlo and I said our vows in both English and Spanish. My parents don’t speak Spanish and Giancarlo’s parents don’t speak English. It was important to us to incorporate both languages and customs equally throughout the ceremony. Saying my vows to this amazing man in both my native language and his native language was something that I will never forget, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

When Dave and I were searching for our wedding venue, one of the first places we looked was The Sutherland. At the time, they pointed out the space where their new pavilion was going to be built, and it is so fun to now see this complete (and totally beautiful) space at Elizabeth and Matt’s wedding! It was the perfect place for these high school sweethearts to celebrate their marriage, surrounded by their loving family and friends. Our Blue Ribbon Vendor, Twenty-One Films, did a wonderful job capturing this sweet, Southern, summer day!

From Elizabeth:

Matt and I met in high school physics class when he was a junior and I was a senior. We were assigned to be lab partners on the first day of class, and although he was much quieter than me at the time, he caught my attention when on the second day of class, he asked me, “How was ballet?” I had mentioned going to class only once the day before, but it was that little statement that showed me how well he listened and cared. We started dating soon after. The next year, I went to Appalachian while he finished up senior year, and I was so thrilled when he joined me at school for the next three years. Right before I graduated, he took me on an adventure date to the Biltmore. It was the perfect place to get engaged after 4 1/2 years together. We were married a year and a half later on July 12, 2014.

When I think of Southern traditions, I first think of hospitality. I wanted our guests to not only be able to celebrate with us, but also to experience meaningful fellowship with everyone else. Sutherland was the perfect backdrop and atmosphere for this, with their beautiful grounds, timeless charm, and impeccable staff. Since we both went to Appalachian, including some rustic elements was important to us. And of course, no Southern wedding is without lace, bow ties, monograms, and sweet tea, which we had plenty of.

We’ve been admiring Anne Sydney and Jesse’s gorgeous wedding for months, ever since we first accepted it for V7, and watching this special day come to life on film is so much fun! Our friends and Blue Ribbon Vendors, Blueberry Creative, were on hand to capture the whole experience–from Anne Sydney getting ready with her gals, to their joyful first look, to the sweet toasts shared on top of the mountain. Enjoy!
