Category: Southern Wedding of the Week

Our Southern Wedding of the Week is so simple and warm. Just lovely! Photography by {Tim Harman}, Location: {Early Hill Plantation}, Greensboro, GA. This ultra-simple historic plantation house (owned by the bride’s parents) was just opened for event use this past Fall; Coordination and Floral Design – {Dinah Hoch and Linda Hufstler}; dress {Casablanca}, cake {Fanciful Cake}, Greensboro, GA; String quartet: {Classic City String}, Athens, GA; carriage {White Plains Motorless Coach}.  Be sure to visit Tim Harman’s {BLOG} for more from Anna + Matt.  Enjoy!

The weather was: We were blessed with breezy warm sunny day
Did you have a theme for your wedding? “Kick up your heels and bring your RED SHOES for dancing and BBQ. Reception Attire: “Ladies, Lace Up Your Red Shoes, Gentlemen, LASSO YOUR RED TIES”
What inspired the theme? I have a quirky thing with wearing red shoes. My moto is wearing red shoes is like wearing blue jeans…they go with everything!
What colors did you choose for your wedding? lime green, burnt orange, and red
Describe your wedding flowers: fun and colorful…orange calla lilies, gerbera daisies
Describe your wedding cake: strawberry shortcake in a trifle cake display
How did the two of you meet? High school sweethearts
Describe your engagement: I came home from work to a black dress lying across my bed with a note that said ‘wear this tonight’! I slipped the dress on and it surprisingly fit perfectly. Then he picked me up and took me to the Westin to eat dinner at the Sundial, which is where we celebrated our first anniversary. After we ate dinner, we walked up to the mezzanine level of the restaurant and as I was looking at the city night lights through telescopes, he called my name. When I turned around, he was down on one knee…and the rest is history!
What attracted me to my husband was: not only is he handsome, but he’s warm hearted, compassionate, caring, supportive, and he makes me laugh.
What attracted me to my wife was: Her passion and drive in anything she tries to accomplish in life.

More details from Anna + Matt coming in Part II….

From Katie at {Jenna Walker Photographers}. For more, visit the Jenna Walker {BLOG}  From Katie… “I was in Naples, Florida for Cheryl & Phil’s wedding at the {Port Royal Club} – and how beautiful it was. With most guests hailing from Michigan and the UK, this was certainly a destination weekend of togetherness for the whole crew. That sort of intimacy is always amazing – watching and meeting these families that may see each other but a few times a year. And making each day count. From the Welcome Dinner to the rehearsal to their big day, Cheryl & Phil were the most gracious of hosts both to their guests and to us.  It was my first time meeting both of them, and wow – they have such energy and empathy for the people in their lives.”

Visual Designer and Florist {50 FIFTY FLORAL ART}, Cake {Mikkelsen’s Pastry Shop}, Paper Goods {Emerald City Designs}, DJ Steve Miller of the {Steve Miller Band},  Bridesmaid Dresses custom made by {Beth Groesbeck}, Catering {Port Royal Club}

More from Katie…”While I spent the morning at the spa with the girls, the uber-talented {Kevin Von Qualen} came along to help me shoot. He enjoyed an afternoon of sailing with Phil & his groomsmen. Rough gig huh?! It looked like an amazing time – this might be the first time I have a shot of a groom doing a back float in the Gulf of Mexico just hours before his wedding!”

{Cheryl’s answers in italics}

The weather: We were blessed with the last beautiful Saturday of May – before the onset of the hurricane season. Blue skies, mid 80s, a few distant white fluffy clouds and, for the boys out sailing, a nice sea breeze
What was the inspiration for your wedding design? We wanted a white wedding but with a natural tropical feel. Our inspiration was Mother Nature — the ocean, sand and palms. Following the waterside service, we wanted the reception to have a South Beach feel.
How did the two of you meet? We met at a Detroit Tigers baseball game – to which I’d been invited by Cheryl’s sister Melissa who works in the same office.
Describe your engagement: I proposed while on a boat, in the middle of our lake, at sunset, having just arrived back from a London and a trip to Tiffany’s.
What attracted me to my husband was: The first time I felt the attraction we were on the dance floor dancing to every song . I loved the way we danced together, the way he looked at me the way he touched me. After that night I couldn’t wait to see him again. Phil is a true Gentleman, when the music stopped he continues to be my Knight in shining armor.
What attracted me to my wife was: She is so beautiful inside and out, and she just makes me want to be a better person every day.

More to come in Part II…

Friday is our favorite day here on the SWS blog.  Sharing these sweet southern weddings and beautiful stories is such a joy!  Photography by Charleston, SC-based {Heather Forsythe Photography}, Catering: {Charleston Bay Gourmet}, Flowers: {Buy the Bunch Florist} , Pastry Chef: {The Cake Stand}, Reception Entertainment: {Band Triple Lindy}, Wedding Planning & Coordination: Stacey Fraunfelter of {Red Letter Events}

The weather was: Faithful, holding out until the cake cutting, and then only a short rainstorm to make sure we felt good about paying the extra amount for additional tent rentals.
What was your inspiration for your wedding design? The beautiful low country I now call home and Amy Butler’s primrose and belle henna cotton print fabrics. I had table runners made out of each print for the tables to add color. The flowers worked beautifully with them.
Describe your wedding flowers: I wanted simple, clean, elegant, dramatic and fresh. Because the wedding was outdoors in such a beautiful setting with spring in full bloom, we stuck with cream, blue, and light green under the tent. Hydrangeas, coffee berry, tulips, and other treats were used throughout.
Describe your wedding cake: Simple, elegant, and tailored. Each layer had a different flavor with curd filling.
How did you meet? By luck. We walked into a Coastal Granite and Tile showroom at the same time on the same date. Winfield had just bought a new home with an old kitchen and was considering installing granite counter tops. I was in town for a work project (the bride is an interior designer) and had stopped in the store. The sales person, Brenda Thompson, played a key part in the matchmaking that ensued. Winfield was lost in trying to pick out the right granite and Brenda quickly suggested he should hire me to help him. Not long after, she hit a home run by directly asking both of us if we were married. When we both answered “no”,  Winfield turned to me and jokingly proposed on the spot! I told him that we should get through his kitchen remodel to see how that goes…
Describe your engagement: Winfield proposed over Christmas hiding a diamond ring in a pair of wool socks to keep me warm forever.
What attracted me to my husband was: So handsome and full of southern charm.
A date we went on that we’ll always remember: Winfield invited me for a home cooked breakfast and a full day of fishing in McClellanville.
Our favorite detail of the wedding was: The fact that is was a low country, relaxed, fun occasion. Even the town dog showed up.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome while planning your wedding? Time. After getting engaged we were ready to start our life so we decided to marry April 5th, leaving only 3 months to plan. We hired a great wedding planner, Stacy with Red Letter Events, to make vendor suggestions and coordinate the event.
Where there any special family traditions you included in the wedding? I wore a family emerald and diamond ring that was mygrandmother’s. This was in honor of my late father. I also had framed wedding invitations that belonging to my grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother dating back to the late 1800’s.
Scariest moment? Praying for good weather. It was pouring down rain everywhere else in the state of SC.
Funniest moment?  Seeing the town dog walk down the aisle before the bridal party.
What were your something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue items? Old was the family emerald ring, new was my dress, borrowed was an angel pendant pinned to the bouquet, and blue was the color of the grooms sport coat.
Why do you love your husband? Because he is the answer to my prayers.
The most unexpected event on our wedding day was: Everything went very smoothly. What was unexpected was the sheer joy we both felt and the love that was present. I didn’t want it to end… I was not ready to leave because it was the happiest day of my life.
What advice would you give to someone planning their wedding? Hire a wedding planner! Hiring a professional will save you time and mistake money. When the big day arrives, you’ll be able to really enjoy it knowing that a seasoned professional is out there making it all come together. The other big piece of advice is to hire a good photographer. When it’s all said and done, the pictures and memories are all you have left. After reviewing Heather Forsythe’s work, we were very excited. It was her relaxed shot style and ability to capture the emotions and mood of the day that we wanted.
What’s next for you and Winfield? We would like to start a family in the near future and are having a great time just getting used to married life together.
