I know we’re not supposed to play favorites, but I have to say, I most definitely have a photographer crush on Leigh Miller.  And when I saw Katie + Preston’s engagement shoot on her blog, I knew we had to feature them on our blog.  There’s just something so Southern about the combination of a vintage truck (restored by Preston and his Dad!), a worn, well-loved quilt, and a pair of Mia cowboy boots from Shop Ruche.  And an oversized headband from SW favorite sweetpea&fawn doesn’t hurt, either!

Blue dress: Free People
Orange Dress: Anthropologie

Some brides are the two-dress or two-veil type on their big day, but Shannon was all about the double look when it came to her engagement session with Kristin Vining at the Dairy Barn.  Hair, makeup and styling for both looks was organized and executed by the talented Lindsey Regan Thorne of Be Pretty, and Weddings and the City, the couple’s wedding planner, was on hand to help coordinate.

Take One:  Bright, oversized flower accents, big hair and a pink pedal bike (on loan from Bella Bridesmaid!) were a throw-back to the 1960’s, but we love how in-the-moment these two lovebirds are. Shannon + Matt’s South Carolina photo op was, in many ways, a dress rehearsal for the main event this August: the bride wore the same frilly fuchsia pumps (courtesy of Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse) her bridesmaids will don in a few months and the groom gave the slim-cut Express necktie a test drive before he passes the look onto his attendants.  Something that won’t be making an appearance at the couple’s North Carolina nuptials?  The vintage tiered frock on loan from New York Bride and Groom.

Take Two:  You can’t go wrong with cowboy boots, and we like that Shannon + Matt turned to their favorite pair for their engagement pics.  The bride was a modern-day June Carter in a red Anthropologie dress, especially next to her guitar-playing groom, and the galvanized “XO” letters – also from Anthropologie – leant some sweet Southern charm to this look.

Our favorite part from this engagement shoot?  The nearly-weds look equally in love in both takes, and we really love that!  Which look is your favorite?

Hi Mary! Did you mean the red dress or the white dress? Hopefully Lindsey or Shannon will hop onto the comments in a bit to help answer your question!Emily @ SW

Thanks Emily! The red dress! I love it! Our rehearsal dinner is in a barn and it would be perfect!

Does anyone else think Shannon has a sort of Carrie Underwood vibe going on? Katharine and I are currently debating… P.S. I think my favorite look is the red dress, as well. Too cute!

  7. avatar Ashley reply

BOTH of these sessions are so cute! :)

I vote for the white dress. The entire shoot is sweet and sassy. Are the flowers in it real? Regardless, it’s a beautiful backdrop. Can’t wait to see this couple’s wedding pictures.

  9. avatar Audrey reply

Oh my gosh. These pictures are insanely cute! I like both looks but the first is my fave. Very girly :-) Great job!

Mary, I’m fairly certain that the red dress is by Tracy Reese. It sold in Anthropologie stores under the name of the "Ablaze Dress." I don’t think it is available on their website, but call customer service 800.543.1039. Maybe they can help you locate one in a store. The style number (they’ll ask you for it) is style #030001

  15. avatar Ashley HH reply

I am in love with the red dress!!!! I have seen it twice! in one week on separate blogs and its not on the anthro website anymore! Anyone know where I can find it?

  16. avatar Brenda reply

Do y’all know the brand of the pink shoes?

  17. avatar Kim King Smith Events reply

    Great photos! Absolutely fabulous!

  18. avatar Sarah reply

Which one is my favorite? Wow, what a hard choice!I’m going to go with BOTH! I like the traditional feel in the first set, which makes it great for those relatives who would frown on "untraditional" engagement photos (we all have one or two!) The second one, however, has a definite "this is us" feel. These are the show-to-our-grandkids pictures. They both have their place, and they’re both amazing!

Okay, I can’t TELL you how hard it was to keep this little shoot all to ourselves for so long!  Simply Bloom sent it wayyy back in November of last year, and as soon as I saw it, I knew it would be perfect for a love day feature.  Sweet, simple, rustic chic, and filled with emotion.  And — bonus! — the shoot took a surprising turn halfway through.  Read on to see what we mean…!

From the ladies of Simply Bloom…

“This was another experience altogether. As women, we could not help but tear up and even get a few butterflies in our stomachs as we watched this unfold.  William had thoroughly explained to us his plan to propose to Katie during the shoot, and when he mentioned it would be with a kite, there was some squealing going on on our end… Somehow, because it was meant to be, the entire afternoon progressed naturally and perfectly. Katie had no idea what her fate held, and yet everyone around her knew that this would be THE happiest day of her life. We had planned with William cues for us to know the thereabouts of when he was going to go down on one knee. He explained he was going to tie the ring on the kite, which they would then fly, and then Katie would see the ring. As amazing as that plan sounded, there seemed to be too many little factors that could have not gone according to plan. Despite my doubts and crossed fingers, William pulled it ALL off PERFECTLY. The kite flew easily and swiftly in the perfect blue sky as they held the spool together; Katie ran the kite back and forth without noticing the ring until the very wonderful moment where William kneeled  down to ask her to be with him forever. Witnessing and CAPTURING such an amazing and meaningful moment in a person’s life, left both Christine and I feeling so FORTUNATE about what we do. What we noticed as outsiders, is that the combination of the wide open lush field, timing, reactions, and the perfect shades of the sunset– could not have been more magical.

William, you are the bravest man! Katie, you are so fortunate to have such a romantic man on your side forever– you two are beautiful. We have no words to thank you for letting us witness this moment.”

Congratulations, Katie and William!  We wish you an absolutely beautiful wedding day!
